I really wanted to like this hotel because there were some things they did very well. The housekeeping staff deserves recognition--they kept the rooms spotless, and we saw them working incredibly hard in the extreme heat. They were friendly, diligent, and the cleanliness of the room was excellent. They were actually helpful in many other ways as they had to show us where the manager's room was located - as there were no signs. It was the room with McDonald's trash waiting to be carried out. Unfortunately, the rest of our experience was disappointing. When we arrived, the manager told us we had to wait for him to "clock back in from lunch" before he could help us. After the wait, he walked us to our room, and we were surprised by how incredibly small it was. There was barely enough space for two people to move around the bed, and one person had to step aside just so the other could get into the bathroom. There wasn't even a small table or desk, so I had nowhere to work or even sit comfortably to enjoy a cup of coffee. Booking was also frustrating. I called the hotel directly to ask about my employer discount, but the person who answered wasn't very helpful and told me I had to book through a specific website. We did, but nowhere on that site did it accurately convey just how tiny the room would be. Had we known, we would have stayed elsewhere, since I was there for work. The excellent housekeeping staff is the reason I'm giving more than one star. Management, communication, and transparency about the room size (including the pictures on their website) all need significant improvement. read more

Really a great little situation here on the Avenue of the Flags. I had a moment of uncertainty when I pulled up at 3:00 to check in and the parking lot was empty except for a few cars and there was no office sign. I wondered for a minute if the place had closed. It turned out I just hadn't received the check-in text for the contactless checkin. I called the local number, got a human, and she got me set up with my door code and emailed instructions in about 15 minutes. Everything after that was smooth sailing. Clean, soft but comfortable bed, lovely Danish decor, a modern bathroom with rainfall shower head, Malin & Goetz toiletries, bottled water, local coffee from Santa Barbara in the Keurig-like in-room maker, two glass glasses and two coffee cups, a modern fridge, new A/C. I had a moment with the A/C at 4am when it kept turning on and off, but once I figured out it was on Eco-mode, I turned that to regular and all was well. There's a white noise machine and the windows open. They've thought of everything. The desk space is a little small but it works (I had the Queen room). As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe. The famous Hitching Post II is only a four minute drive or 20 minute walk away. I would return to Hotel Hygge for sure with my lessons learned for an expected five-star stay! read more

Cute and affordable spot! My boyfriend and I found this spot through airbnb and thought it was a great find as it's close to Solvang, yet affordable. They contacted me through airbnb and sent an email 15 minutes before check in (3pm) to provide me with the information and code. It's self check-in which was nice since we didn't arrive till 10pm. Check in is from 3pm to 12am. The room was a bit small, but it had a cozy feel to it. It felt clean and organized. There's a table, mini coffee maker, and fridge. The fridge kept making a loud and annoying sound so we actually unplugged it. The AC was on auto, but every time it turned on, it released a smell throughout the whole room. It smelt of old florals. The scent was so strong, it caused a headache. We had to turn the AC off which left the room stuffy. The WiFi worked great and there's a basket with corn hole pouches you can play outside. There's also a fire pit outside. It was a nice spot given that it's a 5-10 minute drive from Solvang. It's definitely worth the price. read more

I first learned about the Danish concept of hygge - a feeling of contentment from simple pleasures and experiences - from a Frozen storybook. Hotel Hygge is what you get when you cross Airbnb with a motel. Everything is contactless and there's no front desk, so someone emails you at the start of your stay with information including your room number and keypad code. Check-in starts at 3pm. The wife and I were anxiously waiting for the email, but it didn't come until 3:10. They also didn't pick up when we tried to call, but they eventually returned our text message, so allow for a bit of delay in reaching them. The room was fine but small. There was a TV, mini fridge with no freezer section, small coffee maker that didn't work well, and a small table over the fridge that had barely enough room for me to sit at to use my laptop. Lighting was a bit too dim. The free WiFi was reliable and fast enough for streaming. The wall heater worked amazingly well. In the bathroom, the sink was very low and the shower pressure was only strong when the water was on the cold setting. Noise isolation was average - we heard some plumbing and muffled conversation from the adjacent unit, but people were generally respectful. There's a common room with an ice machine, microwave, and extras like toilet paper and cutlery for guests to use. Outside there are three fire pits, a bike station with tools and a pump, a bocce ball court, and cornhole boards. The cornhole bean bags are easy to miss - they're actually in a little bucket in each room. Guests here are also able to use the fitness center at Sideways Inn, the nearby sister hotel. Their fitness center is pretty legit, especially if you're into weight training. 3.5 stars overall. Hotel Hygge was the cheapest place in town by far (at least on the Capital One travel portal that we booked through), so I was willing to overlook a lot of the shortcomings. We even found a bit of hygge for ourselves by the fire pit at night. For the price, this was a reasonable stay! read more

Rating this a 2 for it being remodeled, cleanliness, and convenience. It's located just outside of Solvang (which hotels quickly fill up on weekends) and close to the freeway entrance. There is NO front desk but there is a host - and guests here have free run of the sideways inn amenities. This place also has a fire pit and corn hole! After booking a room and agreeing to the terms I was sent and e-mail with my room number and keypad code and let myself in. The room was cute (see pic) there was a basket of corn hole bean bags, fridge, ice bucket, coffee maker, white noise machine, tv and toiletries. The bed was comfy BUT we slept with our feet at the head of the bed because that side of the mattress was lower. Another review I saw mentioned (mind you I booked this place without checking yelp) the AC/heating unit was loud and that it was going off ever so often it woke my light sleeper of a husband up numerous times. The host was nice and kept in contact with me the whole time. Even brought over yogurt, juice and pastries for breakfast. read more

Wanted to make a quick review about this place because it was truly a hidden gem. It's located in an area that seems to be a truck stop and the property looks like a remodeled motel. Just a couple of minutes drive are other hotel chains and Tesla superchargers so it is not completely remote and more importantly, it's an 8 minute drive to Solvang. There is no front desk, it's all self check in. They will send you the code to your email though we had to call and ask since we didn't get it beforehand. The room itself is spacious, clean, and very cutely-designed with a Scandinavian theme. The bathroom amenities were Malin + Goetz which is actually a nice brand. The bed is one of the coziest and softest I've ever been on! The room also has a fridge and stocked with bottles of water and you can also get more from the ice machine room. For the price point, this is actually such a good find. Just a little bit off putting considering the location but we had a lovely time. It is 45 minutes away from SB but really close to Solvang. read more

This Place looks cute and cozy, but let me tell you this place was probably by far the worst hotel I've stayed at. Everything is digital, for starters I called and asked about my reservation because I wasn't sure if we'd make it to the latest check in, which is 12a. The person on the phone immediately was like nope didn't go through and I said okay I have a confirmation email though she said what's the last name, I gave it to her and she followed by just straight "no didn't go through." Didn't try at all to help me with anything. I then followed by saying okay, what can be done she said contact the service you got the reservation from and hung up. When we arrived the hotel seemed clean, however it was dirty in alll the places! The walls were full of hair, and the restroom had another persons shit on it! On the side of the restroom! How gross is that! We called to let them know how the conditions of the room was and they followed by saying they'd clean it, and it wasn't! The shit smears were still there there was still hair all over the place and the bed wasn't even made ! We called again to tell them about it, they sent the operations manager to check it out, and he legit had a towel and cleaning spray to wipe the shit off! We complained about it and the other person not the operations manager gave us a different room. Still had hair all over the bathroom walls. . At this point I want a refund for the entire stay! This place was not good at all, and my experience wasn't the best either. No good customer service and the operations manager had no good bed side manner. If I could give no stars I would however help wont allow me to do that! read more

We stayed at the Hotel Hygge last July 2023. The check-in process was a little bit frustrating. We knocked on the front door of the office and no one was there. We were not aware that the check-in was fully online. there was no sign outside stating that the office was closed or that we needed to check in online so some signage would be appreciated. But once we got a hold of someone, we were able to get our room information and check-in. we later encountered other travelers from another country, who were also quite confused, so we helped them out as well. This should be a no-brainer. Other than that the room was very clean, well decorated and nice, it also had nice quality shampoo and conditioner. We only stayed there for one night and it was just what we needed. One disappointment was they said you could go to their sister hotel which is about five minutes or less down the road and use their pool. The pool was closed. You would think that they could communicate with each other and just give us a heads-up that the pool is not available since it's advertised. the other location had a nice bar where you could get a drink and some food. It was a really cute location. I would see if that location is available to stay if we ever go back. the hotel Hygge was in a great location. Just a short drive to the main solving downtown area. That's really what was most important to us. They had a nice outdoor area with fire pits and corn hole. We enjoyed having some desserts by the fire in the evening, you have to turn it on manually when you're ready to use it. Another complaint is that it's not super apparent how to get ice or how to turn on the fire pits. If you want to be a hands-off management property, then you need to have appropriate signage to help people know exactly where to go. read more

The AC was loud, but what was worse was having a room right next to the ice machine room. It ruined my sleep multiple times. This place is a hidden gem! It is a completely self service motor lodge. No front desk. You get an email with your room access. Rooms are clean an very bare bones.... But, serves it's purpose. There are fire pits, botchi ball and corn hole on property.... We were put in room 13! And, I don't know if anyone else that has stood there has had the experience of things happening in their room without explanation. Things falling off the table when they were put in the middle of the table... Front door locking on its own (knob turned right in front of us) the constant sound of things hitting the floor... The property is completely remodeled. But, it is clearly an older roadside motel! read more

Being honest, when we pulled up we were the only ones there and since there is no lobby or registration area it was kind of spooky. We almost went somewhere else because of this fact but we went and got a bite to eat and when we came back a couple other vehicles were there. Nice clean rooms, probably one of the nicer hotels I have stayed at recently. It reminded me of staying in an IKEA. First of all: don't let the low star rating fool you, this is a very nice hotel. Yes, it's not a huge, multi-story hotel & yes it is a renovated "motel" but this place gives you what you need: cleanliness, affordable & comfortable. The reviews on hotel.com are more pertinent. No staff on hand is new & may throw traditionalists off but if it's where hotels are headed then we are in. My wife & I are staying here because Chumash rates are ridiculous & every else is booked. Found this place on hotels.com & would definitely return. The convenience of having our car close & not having to walk a mile from my car to my room is a plus. The 1 star reviews are unfair & don't represent this place at all. 1 review is the reviewers fault not the hotel's; if you go through a 3rd party you have do deal with them not the hotel (experienced hotels.com people know what I'm talking about) and the other 1 star reviewer just hasn't accepted the "no staff" direction hotel's are headed towards. This place is lovely; it's not the Ritz, not even close but it is adequate. read more

My husband & I just checked ourselves in & we are very impressed already! It is tastefully remodeled and new. If you find yourself in the Solvang area, you should give this place a chance. The other (few) reviews I found on Yelp are not relevant. It is true that you check yourself in, but it is very simple. They are allowing us to contact them via txt for anything we may need. Additionally, we can use the amenities at a nearby partner hotel, which is where our requests will be addressed from. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this place. I found this hotel on booking.com. I immediately was attracted to the games and the clean and simple but comfortable aesthetic. The selection of shampoo, conditioner and body wash is refined and appreciated. The fridge is nice and spacious. Ice maker on premise. Love that it was hard floors and ruggables. We specifically were looking for a quaint dog friendly place and this definitely checked that box and more. Will definitely return! read more

Unfortunately we would not recommend this motel for a number of reasons. This is a pretty bare bones motel. There is no front office on premises so any calls for service of any kind are made to Sideways Hotel. The parking lot is dark, which resulted in a trip and fall. The shower barely trickled out water and the water was lukewarm at best. The heat/air conditioner is so loud you can't hear yourself think. read more

Booked this hotel and immediately noticed the date was wrong for our stay. I called within minutes of booking and spoke to a representative with a bad attitude, who said there was nothing that he could do and I needed to go to the third party I booked the reservation through. The third party sent a request for refund as the hotel would not allow us to adjust the reservation by one day. The hotel denied the refund. I will be sure to tell people never to stay at this establishment based on how they treat potential guests. Sad, especially since its looks like a nice place to stay and refer people to. read more
