I'm sad to say that I didn't love my stay at the Hotel Providence as much as I would've liked. The Good: -Comfortable bed -Decent shower -Good location -Pretty good rate -Well-appointed room, if small The Bad: -The sullen check-in clerk -The persistent mildew smell in the bathroom -The lack of a view The Ugly: -The gym. When I asked the person who checked me in about it, they hesitated, and then gave me shockingly inadequate directions on how to find it. I can only assume that was because they didn't want me to go. I don't that anyone should go. It's a weird basement with inadequate free weights, and a few cardio machines. The lack of free weights wouldn't be a problem, but the weight machines were just...broken. When we called down in the morning to confirm the concierge who was working today said a $30 fee had already been charged to the room. The room itself is fine, though the bathrooms could be cleaner and the hotel itself could use some updating. The area itself has a significant amount of unhoused people loitering as well. 2.5 out of 5: The overall experience was fine, but I would not stay here again. Though historic, the hotel is definitely showing its age. It felt old and unpolished and lacked the "luxury" experience that they advertise. Luckily we did not have any issues with our room; our AC worked well during the heat wave and the bed and pillows were comfortable. As many has stated, there is a number of homeless just a few steps away from the hotel entrance. Some are across the street near the church, others are taking up the sidewalk on the same side of the hotel that you would need to take to get to Washington Street. We did not encounter any aggression, but it definitely makes the walk to and from the hotel uncomfortable. read more

Really odd stay: Stayed in suite, w beautiful old furniture. Carpeted and upholstery everywhere; very dark rooms with very dim lamps. Not great for a person allergic, as this place is also pet friendly and there is dander everywhere. Luckily the bathroom was well lit. There is coffee service (but the coffee is cold, oddly, despite their being in vacuum dispensers); there is also snack service (appreciated!); the lobby is beautiful but not peaceful to sit in because the desk people are extremely loud and screaming at the top of their lungs to each other at all times. Upon check in I thought it hilarious that I couldn't understand a word she was saying. (I'm a native English speaker.) There is a vending machine which does not vend, which then eats your money then returns it in quarters. The expensive valet doesn't help with bags. The desk people disappear at night for large amounts of time, so no one is there if you need your key re programmed (they gave us one bent key which only sometimes worked, then blamed us for bending it; the next day neither worked; the replacements didn't work; the desk girl 'blamed' it on the person registering us (which was herself, the same incomprehensible person aforementioned.) The walls are very thin and we were kept up by loud people all night; additionally there is some kind of strobe light shining in through the curtain in the middle of the night, which woke us up. The hair dryer only blows cold air. On the way back home we discovered itchy welts. Now in reading all these, I wonder if we stayed in a bedbug infested room. I wouldn't doubt it, based on all my itching and it being so dark in there. The curtains only opened halfway by design. A note about the area - as someone mentioned, there are homeless people wandering about/loitering the entire time. We chose this place due to it being 'downtown', but on a Sunday, most things are not open. There are few open restaurants/shops, but in the area most spaces are vacant. Check internet listings, as many places are permanently closed. Basically I sat around waiting for most of the day due to this. Additionally most places which ARE open close early for dinner. Other: the wifi worked consistently, but unsecured. The 'Backstage' restaurant staff is friendly; but it closes early as well, despite the signage. Therefore you cannot access the outside courtyard during non -restaurant hours. They have really nice (albeit very very fragrant) soap in a community dispenser. The furniture is beautiful. read more

Unacceptable Treatment & Lack of Accountability I had a deeply disappointing and upsetting experience at Hotel Providence. I booked my reservation around midnight and traveled from Boston to Providence, RI. Upon arrival, the second front door was locked, and I waited approximately five minutes before the concierge came to open it. When I approached the front desk and politely asked if my reservation was visible, the concierge, Jordan, responded in a rude and hostile tone, saying, "Can you wait!!" He then stated that although he could see my reservation, I could not check in until 4:00 PM. I explained that I had nowhere else to go and kindly asked if he could check whether any accommodations could be made. He abruptly said no, claiming the hotel was fully booked. He then stated that I could pay $339.35 for the night and would be able to get a room immediately, which directly contradicted his earlier statement that no rooms were available. When I asked what the nightly rate included (amenities, etc.), he responded defensively and dismissively. Shortly after, he told me that if I didn't stop asking what he referred to as "condescending questions," he would call the police and have me removed. This threat was completely unwarranted and unprofessional. At no point was I rude, aggressive, or disruptive--I was simply asking reasonable questions about my reservation. Because of this interaction, I was left with no choice but to sleep in my car. I was not willing to pay nearly $400 on top of an existing reservation, nor was it safe for me to drive back to Boston at that hour. The following day around 3:30 PM, the concierge was kind and helpful, though my room was still not ready and I waited an additional 45 minutes. Later, a third concierge listened carefully to my experience and confirmed that the hotel was not fully booked and that accommodations should have been made the night before, directly contradicting what I had been told by Jordan. Despite management being aware of the situation, the manager, Brad Craig, never approached me, never acknowledged what happened, and never attempted to address or resolve the issue. I understand hotel policies, but nothing justifies threatening a guest with police for asking questions or leaving someone effectively stranded. This experience reflects a serious lack of professionalism, empathy, and leadership. I hope this feedback leads to proper staff training and accountability so no other guest is treated this way. read more

Accommodations were nice and clean however the valet service sucks. Just make sure you know when their valet gets off of work. When I arrived at 10pm valet was off of work and I needed to uber to their valet parking lot as it's not the best part of providence and quite far. Although quaint, this visit left us underwhelmed. The room had layers of dust in the edges and corners of the room, mold in the shower, but the lack of shampoo, body wash and conditioner was unexpected. While checking out we heard other guests making the same comment which made us realize that this must be the standard, and not just an oversight. Due to the lack of house cleaning I was concerned to use one of the glasses for water. I was rightfully concerned as it was cracked. We checked out at 8 am looking forward to a cup of coffee, only to find out there was none to be had. When mentioning this to the front desk, we were told that the restaurant should have some. We. Attending the ppac musical "some like it hot" and wanted a hotel close by. We checked in mid afternoon and gave our Tesla card key to valet. Then going over to the desk two Young women were chatting behind the desk. They ignored us till after waiting nearly 5 minutes I interrupted them and was checked in. One took our information gave us a key but said no more as she began chatting with her colleague again. I interrupted and she said we were done. But off to my favorite restaurant in providence the capital grill. What a meal and service. We then had to rush back to get to ppac but on the way spotted my Tesla still out in front of the hotel. With a group of homeless people gathered across the street I wanted it safely out of there. So I went in to find the same clerk and asked why my car wasn't parked. She said some nonsense about the lot being full on a Sunday in April! When asked her to call the manager because my car would not be safe there all night she said she would take care of it. When we came back from the show at ten she it was still.there. They finally parked at 6:30 in the morning shortly before we came down to leave. The same clerk whose name she said was Kate was still there. She said the manager did not get back to her but couldn't take off the 40.00 valet charge even though they didn't valet till it wasn't necessary. It is a historic hotel but needs some updating. There is a homeless shelter right across the street so a lot of homeless people in the area. The ladies at the front desk were friendly and helpful but the valets never even looked up from their phones and didn't offer to help with luggage. TOOK ADVANTAGE OF SON - Autistic. We booked/prepaid for a weekend for son (in his name) for ComiCon. Upon him checking out they charged him $799. Son claims he had told them at check out he had prepaid.... but he did not stand his ground on it. I contacted hotel (12/5 @ 6PM) and after waiting 10 minutes to get someone, "Bob" at front desk could not find reservation with the confirmation number or our name. He was also very rude. Bed bugs!! Manager Brad was zero help! I stayed at hotel providence on March 3 2025. This experience was my much different than the positive experiences I've become used to in the past with Wyndham properties . I pull up , the valet didn't move from his lean on the valet desk fine. When he say I was staying at the hotel offered zero help carrying bags from car to lobby ( also fine but weird) still tipped him $20. Being a weekend out we went out downtown and then I ended up falling asleep on the couch and not the bed . In the morning when I went to move from the couch to the bed, I was disturbed to find bedbugs all over the mattress and sheets. I immediately gathered all my belongings and went downstairs. I went to go show Manager Brad, the videos of what I just found. He had no interest in going and looking at the issue with me and told me he'll look into it. I literally just found bugs in the bed and he said he was gonna look into it or bring me no help or even an apology I had a $3000 Louis Vuitton duffel on the bed along with all my jackets. I said what is the procedure on making sure these are clean he said he wasn't sure of the procedure on that. So as a general manager, he had no idea how to even rectify a situation. I call back the next day and he said there was nothing in the room, even though he saw the videos that I took seconds before talking to him. He is extremely unprofessional. I will never go back to this property. This is something I've never had to deal with a Wyndham before and I've stayed at this property before I know it very downhill since the last time I stayed there . Beware . They'll openly let their customers stay in rooms with bedbugs and do nothing to help out . On top of that the bathtub was absolutely disgusted, filled with long black hairs when I filled it up with water. AVOID. I was ready to give this hotel a 4 star review until I looked at my car the next day. We paid $40 for the overnight valet parking and I even tipped the valet an extra $20 upon my arrival. When we left the next morning it was raining so we rushed into the car without giving it a good look over. The next day we noticed these scratches all over our hood (more not pictured). On their website, the Hotel Providence claims they offer European flair and New England charm, and that their hotel is steeped in historic character dating back to the 19th century. This is 100% accurate from my perspective, an old, beautiful and nicely maintained property, with a lovely lobby and wonderful architectural details. They also say that you can "Savor a delicious meal or handcrafted cocktail at Backstage Kitchen & Bar, serving creative New England classics with innovative twists". But according to recent Yelp reviews and my prior experience, this is sadly not the case. They currently have a 2.5-star Yelp rating, as was evident by their nearly empty restaurant and bar the other evening, as we walked past on our way to Red Fin Credo (which was packed). It's unfortunate, as the hotel restaurant is very attractive and offers a wonderful outside patio. The rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, large windows and large bathrooms. The staff is courteous and attentive. They provide complimentary (and quite good) coffee first thing in the morning, in the lobby. And they offer valet parking, which was $30 a day. Note that there is a parking lot directly across the street if you don't want to hassle with a valet, which is $25 a day. The fitness room is in the basement. It is large and well equipped, but of course it is windowless. There is a stairway down from the lobby. They provide treadmills, elliptical, dumbbells, a small Hoist universal and a weight bench. It's fine, certainly adequate. The Hotel Providence is in an excellent location. This is my second visit and I'd be happy to return. Rates are not inexpensive, but you do get an attractive room, comfortable bed, bathrobes, and a beautiful property. One nitpick on this visit was the lack of pillows. This is supposed to be an upscale hotel, but our bed had only three pillows. Two per person should be the minimum for any hotel, especially for the "only AAA Four Diamond luxury boutique hotel in Providence," which is "passionate about providing stellar hospitality." read more

I stayed at the Hotel Providence during the Rhode Island film festival. It was a great experience! The location is super central. The staff was lovely -- special shout-out to Eli and Rocky for making it fun and memorable-- and the hotel is quite pretty. All the normal vintage hotel quirks apply: some windows face into brick light tunnels, and there is occasional hallway noise from other guests, but those elements are something that I personally love when traveling. The bed was incredibly comfortable, which to me, is the most important part of any out-of-town stay. read more

The gentleman that checked me in at night was super nice. The room was pretty, but the walls are thin. Didn't get any sleep first night, since the person above me kept walking around. They did give me a white noise machine for the following night and offered ear plugs. I can or will sleep with ear plugs. The machine help somewhat, but never got a full good night sleep. Last night getting my car, I found it strange that 2 valet people had been riding in my car together? Why? Both mornings trying to get my car before 6 am was a challenge. Recently, I've found myself staying at boutique hotels. Hotel Providence is a beautiful establishment. It's right in the heart of downtown Providence. This area boasts culture, color, and liveliness, which you can see and feel as soon as you hit the streets of Prov. The parking lot across the street from the hotel has beautiful murals - you should definitely check out if you're into that sort of thing. I stayed in a standard room with two queen beds for a business trip. The room was nice, clean, spacious, with a decent view of the city from the 5th floor. The room came with a mini-fridge, safe, desk, ice bucket, coffee/tea maker ironing board, premium channels, pretty decent free WiFi, two white robes, and a matching pair of large slippers. The room did not come equipped with a microwave but you can simply call the front desk and have one delivered to you if you need one. Okay so can we talk about the bathroom? The lighting was excellent. Also, this was one of the first hotels I stayed at that had a digital scale. It also had a magnifying ring light. I fell in love right there. My only gripe about the bathroom is that they don't have shower caps. I feel like that's a very basic bathroom essential. The hotel itself is interesting. I stayed on the 5th floor and the architecture seemed almost maze-like. It would be interesting to know what the building served as prior to becoming a boutique hotel. FYI: There is no free parking in/around the downtown area (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). I think this is a major flaw for the city. Even Washington D.C. has free parking after a certain time, even with all their zoned parking. Valet is $30/night. Everything else is metered. The front desk staff were interesting. Staying here was so nice. Staff awesome- room awesome- location awesome- price good. Covid restricts so much but everything was clean and tidy and the staff will even bring happy hour to your room since bar was closed. The weather was frightful but with so many food and drink options in this Arts district I was happy to face the cold winds! Pet friendly so this is a huge plus for us!!! You have to walk up to the college to find some grass for your pet (and bring your tissue for pick up) but the walk is so nice. I wish I could give this place 5 star but it's not THAT fancy;) still pretty nice! We love the history behind the building too!!! We stayed in 304. 2 queens and a pull out sofa. read more

I will begin with the positives of The Providence Hotel which I contribute to the 1) the Staff, and 2) the location. I will state that the Staff (Sam & Elijah, and others whom I did not interact with) were great as evidenced by their attentiveness to the check in/check out process, room change support, and attention to the lobby snack area. Yes, the lobby has complimentary snacks and beverages throughout the day; fresh grounded and brewed coffee, tea, soda, and water, and chips, cookies, and nutrigain bars! The hotel location is central to the downtown area located within walking distance to many schools, coffee shops, restaurants, and other sites to see. The hotel is about 9.4 miles from the airport, which as of Nov. 2023, was a $20 Uber ride; Uber and other ride sharing services are easy to get to and from the hotel. For the two reasons mentioned above, I give Hotel Providence two stars. Minus three starts for the value and cleanliness. I paid $260 per night for a W, Thur., & F. With this cost, I could have expected updated and clean facilities. Rather, within one hour of being assigned to my room on the third floor, I observed a mouse run across my room from the closest to the other side of the room. In looking at the closet, I noticed droppings and noticed that there was not only a gap between the closet door and floor, but also between the bedroom door and floor. In addition, the first bedroom had peeling wallpaper, leftover hair in the shower, and some light bulbs that did not work. I called the front to report the pest concern to which they agreed to switch my room with a "sorry". I quickly packed up and went to the lobby with my belongings to obtain my new keycard to a bedroom on the fifth floor. Happily, there were no mice observed in my new room; however, again, the room had leftover hair in the shower and sink, dust/debris under the beds, other furniture, surrounding the front door frame. I was far too tired to change rooms again, and under a tight schedule to change hotels; thus, I kept everything in my suitcase until it was needed and put towels in front of the bedroom and closet doors to ensure no visitors were able to get in. Lastly, the noise level was concerning on both floors- the walls are thin- coughing, grunting, talking, and alarms can be heard in the rooms. I had to put a white noise application on my phone all three nights to ensure I was able to sleep. While I understand there are budgetary issues with the state of the economy impacting staffing and the ability to address general maintenance, and that this hotel is located in a downtown area where pest may be more prevalent, this issue needs to be address as there was at least one more in my group who had a similar experience on a different floor. In summary, this hotel is located in a central area; however, it is outdated and not what you would expect paying $260 per night for a basic room. I think Hotel Providence has potential and this experience must be reflective of the difficult economic times many businesses are going through. read more

I stayed there for only one night and moved to a Marriott after an astonishing exchange with a poorly dressed without a name tag man behind the concierge desk. I went down to the lobby soon after arrival in the evening because my shower was cold and the heat was not coming up and told him the problems. He just kept repeating " Do you want to change your room." I kept asking about whether the other room would have the same problems since it was an old hotel that Wyndam had marketed as renovated. He would not respond to the questions and indeed just ignored me. Suddenly he pulled out a device from behind the desk and claimed he had recorded the whole conversation . Even in the event that he was bluffing , which I am not at all convinced of, his words were designed to intimidate a 74 year old woman traveling alone stuck in this place it being too late in the evening to move. The original plan was to stay 3 nights but I contacted hotels.com immediately and they contacted the hotel while I waited on the phone. I spent the weekend there recently to review some eating restaurants nearby. I chose the area because it was walking distances to places I needed to be. The area felt somewhat seedy on a side street, people congregating on street to sleep for the night and the alleyway below my room had gatherings. It was ok walking before dark but I did Uber or taxi back. Hotel staff friendly but asked specific questions about room were clueless. New versus their newer rooms I was in older section. Room outdated for what I was charged, dirty old drapery, door was hard to close had cracks on both sides could see hallway, sheet on bed was wrinkled( I slept on top sheet) the only nice thing bathroom totally remodeled. There was no instruction book or information in room about hotel property. When asked about exit stairs from top floors I was told look at end of hallway. I saw some wood walls in the exit areas of the staircases and windows in the exit areas not closed properly adjacent to attached roofs. It looked like a scary exit have no idea where it went outside? Very uncomfortable with exits. The lobby outdated w old stuffed furniture, restaurant does not belong to hotel. Dark dreary bar area was not appealing to sit for cocktails. I didn't feel, I wanted to deal w staff because I had asked previous questions without any professionalism from them. There is expensive valet takes forever to get your car out, narrow street for unloading, limited staff for assisting. Watch your billing when you leave mistakes made. If you want cheaper &gloomy go there. Next time I'll go back to Hotel Beatrice new, trendy, safe. I'll give only 2 stars for walking to my venues, updated bathroom. read more

The hotel was easy to find. The staff were friendly. The street was closed off because of the annual PVD festival so we were forced to use valet parking ($40) because all the self park lots were closed for the festival. At first, we were excited to see that one of the festival stages, Snow Street lot, was literally outside our second floor room, and we noted on a google search that the festival would be over at 8pm. But the pounding, pulsating music, DJ screaming and crowd noise actually did not end until about 11:30pm, making sleep absolutely impossible. The windows of our room had an extra layer of plexiglass, which I imagine helped dampen the sound, but it was like being under water at a techno concert. Not fun. The beds were not particularly comfortable (creaky if you turned over), and my companion and I both woke with sore backs. The next morning, I was looking for what the hotel website seemed to indicate was a complimentary breakfast, but there was only coffee and an empty (by 10am) plate of what I saw earlier were danishes cut into thirds. The real breakfast, if you wanted it, was in the restaurant and seemed to have decent pricing, but we opted to drive to a diner. I think the experience would have been much better if we had paid better attention and seen the PVD Festival had been happening, but also, the festival info said it would be shut down by 8pm, so we would have probably booked the room anyway and been robbed of sleep nonetheless. I think it would have been nice for the hotel to give a break on the $40 valet price since the self pay option had been wiped out by the festival. Maybe even a discount at checkout due to the loud music playing well past 8pm would have been nice, but that's probably asking too much. But altogether, the hotel was clean, the staff was pleasant, and the valet service people were also very nice. It was just unfortunately a very, VERY expensive poor night's sleep. read more

This is my preferred hotel when I come to Providence for a weekend. It's charming, clean, and the staff is helpful and kind. I've stayed here twice during covid times and I've felt safe and that protocols were handled well. And my room was spotlessly clean both times. It's also in a fantastic location. If you're like me and love to walk this is perfect. Everything downtown is close and you can even stroll to the west side or east side , though you may have to navigate some construction if you're headed west. Have stayed here before in one of the nicer rooms and it was wonderful, but my last stay here wasn't great. They put me in a room that you had to enter an outer door to get into and it was directly across from another room that was occupied - I really doubt that all their other equivalent rooms were full during covid times. The walls were very thin and the people in that room were very loud and kept me up all night which wasn't the hotel's fault, but the design of that room setup really was horrible. There were a lot of rooms not set up like this that really would have been preferable. Then I saw that there was no shampoo or conditioner, only a soap bar. Hotel Providence is centrally located to many restaurants, bars, boutiques, the Providence Place mall, and the Rhode Island State House. The boutique hotel even has free cookies in the lobby area! Parking is $29 for valet, with free ins and outs. We reserved a double full bed suite, which had a living space in a separate room, central air condition, two tvs, views of the downtown area, fridge, bath robes, disposable slippers and an umbrella for the unpredictable rainy days (which came in hand during my short visit. My only gripe was that the bathroom smelled like wet rag and there was not vent, fan or window to air out the bathroom. But overall, I would recommend Hotel Providence and would stay here again if visiting the area. read more

The hotel is gorgeous. However the pillows are so hard that my neck hurt throughout my entire stay and we slept horribly. The only thing worse than that was the parking attendant at the partnered lot was insane. I cannot believe I paid $75 for this parking. I had the pass provided to me by the hotel. The first morning she ran me down and insisted I needed to replace it with one she provided. Then the day after that she CHASED my car down to see it again. There were only 4 cars. Why would you not just walk around and look when you got there? The chasing me on top of being just rude, IF I stay here again, I'll never park there. read more

We have stayed here many times in the past and have enjoyed it. But on our most recent visit, booked through Hotwire, we were surprised to discover two days after we checked out that they now charge an Amenities Fee, in our case $22 for one night. Since the WiFi is listed as complimentary on their website and the parking cost $30, I'm struggling to figure out just what amenities this new fee covers. The crappy little "gym" in the basement? The lukewarm coffee in the lobby? Looks like it's time to check out some of the other hotels in downtown. read more

My husband and I stayed in Hotel Providence on our wedding night in the Dr. Seuss suite. Check in was super quick and simple and Covid precautions were strictly followed. The lobby was really pretty, but when we entered the suite, we were stunned. It was gorgeous, and it was so much larger than we thought! The cost was also affordable, especially for the size of the room. We live in Providence, but regardless, we will definitely be back! :) read more

I absolutely love coming here for events! The hotel is in the center of Providence, within walking distance to everything and offers balconies, a treed courtyard, valet, and several event spaces suitable for weddings, parties, large dinners, business conferences, etc. Kate, who handles the events, was so helpful in explaining to my group the history of the hotel, it's architecture, literary themes, and amenities. I certainly recommend anyone doing business or celebrating in the city check them out! read more

Very impressed with the quality of this hotel. It was much cheaper than the others we looked at. But regardless of price this was a really nice place and it was pet friendly. Our room was clean and inviting with newer updates. The bathroom was clean and spacious. Valet parking was available and helpful due to the location in the heart of town. The lobby was very nice and the staff were top notch. The pet fee of $75 a night was a little more than I am used to paying but our puppy was comfortable as well. read more

While the hotel is beautiful, the restaurant was closed during our stay. There was also no breakfast buffet in the morning and since the kitchen was closed there was also no way to order food from our room. In August, Providence is just deserted and most places are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Overall, it's OK for a one night stay. read more
