Relaxing outside by the fire pit.

I stayed here on September 2nd-3rd 2025. This hotel is modern unlike traditional hotel chains I'm accustomed to. It was relaxing to sit outside by the fire pit watching the sunset. As I return to my room, it was nice to see people playing board games in the dining room. Also, in the morning the staff was very attentive and asked if they can make me a cup of espresso or cappuccino. I am an early riser but was able to sleep-in because the bed was extremely comfortable. I understand the remodel does not have the same characteristics as the original hotel but I have to admit, it is much cleaner. Howard

If you love books and unique experiences this charming and quirky hotel is the place for you! Sylvia Beach Hotel is a lovely renovated historical building from the early 1900s and the owners did a phenomenal job keeping it's historic feel even after renovations. The hotel is designed in a way that allows guest relax and unplug from modern society. If you desire big rooms, up to date luxurious bathrooms, televisions and wifi you will want to look elsewhere. The aim of the hotel is to unplug and relax from our fast paced modern society. With author themed rooms , no wifi, a cell phone free library and sitting area this hotel transports its guest to another place and time. There are books, puzzles and fascinating book themed decor throughout the hotel. Every room is different. Some have views, multiple beds or only one bed. If you have particular requests you should do your research on your room's amenities before booking. The three course meal at Table of Contents was phenomenal! The vegetables are all grown in the owner's home garden. The restaurant requires reservations since it is a small dining experience. There are two large tables where guests are seated (cruise style). My husband and I met lovely people from Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Sylvia Beach Hotel is located directly on the beach and there are fun shops all around. My husband and I stayed in the JK Rowling room. The vacant rooms are left open so we took a tour of several other rooms including Ken Casey, Shakespeare and Dr. Seuss. Each room had its own unique appeal. If you are looking to relax and you're able to let go of our modern expectations this beautifully restored hotel is top notch!

What an amazing stay! I could have stayed for days. My husband found this in a guide book from years ago and he called as soon as our itinerary was set from our trip from San Francisco to Portland, OR. Although they have a website- reservations are old fashioned through the phone. You won't see people with IPads watching movies or going through Tik Tok. It is quiet and beautiful. This is a book lovers paradise. Each room is themed after a different author and the rooms are well done. And the hotel sits on a bluff with amazing views of the ocean. We stayed in the Mark Twain room (both literary majors) and as soon as we got to our room- I didn't want to leave. It had a large bed and desk and two windows that looked out over the ocean. You could see the ocean anywhere in the room. There was a window seat that I stretched out on and a fireplace. Our room had this beautiful balcony with ocean view and the day we checked in- it was windy. Very windy. Enough that I couldn't close the car door and when I almost had it- the wind flew the door back on its springs. We thought what a waste- this balcony but no way we could use it. But the location of the room blocked the wind and we enjoyed a bottle of wine outside with a premade cheese plate from the gift shop. The gift shop also has wine for purchase. We sat outside and watched the few people trying to walk on the beach in the small hurricane. Then we dug out our books and got cozy and read. And drank more wine. We did start a fire and it was wonderful. The employees were nice and there were books everywhere along with common library rooms with people quietly reading. I was so sad to have to leave in the morning. This is a book lovers paradise and you should make a trip to Oregon just to stay here.

However, - There was zero recycling. We're surrounded by natural magnificence and it killed me to throw out glass, plant and paper in one bin. - Staircases to the beach were treacherous and wooden. Salt air destroys wood, making the descent to the beach scary and splinter-y. The wooden stairs to the beach near the restaurant were particularly dangerous. Areas of the stairs did not have the greenery trimmed back, and at the bottom you have to step through dirty silty water. Those stairs are a lawsuit waiting to happen. - The cement staircases inside the hotel actually had danger signs posted. I fear for older people... Yes, there's an elevator, but.... - No ventilation in bathroom. - The built-in heater screen was filthy and hairy-- possible fire hazard? - the bath/shower had a filthy very used rubber bath mat. No thanks. The 1950s are long gone. The very considerate and well-meaning Doggie gift bag was nice, but someone needs to let the hotel know that hard plastic frisbees break dogs' teeth, the plastic water bottles were not safe BPA plastic, so we just left it behind. Great idea in hospitality, but need an upgrade. So, I had to take away a star.

(I've eaten there in the last few years)- It does have a beautiful view! -Beds were very comfy for all! -The room has the tiniest fan I've ever seen! -I love that in the Wall of Windows there is a tiny window in which you can open it to hear the ocean! -It was post holiday and the room service wasn't available that night. -Be ready of using the stairs, wether it's maneuvering the building to going down to the beach. They do have an elevator by the lobby. -Poo on not having an available flashlight. As it was mentioned in the binder in room. Also speaking of said binder-keep in mind it's just not up to date- It is what it is when it comes to not having to use more paper/ink. This place is well loved (maintained). LOVE the lit mirror (reminded me I didn't bring my tweezers haha). Room had a large amount of extra space ; if you need to set up a playpen or doggie bed there is still lots of space to walk. Absolutely would love to come here again! Every bit of the staff was very friendly!

Pros: We had a nice spacious 3rd floor room with a great view of the beach. The hotel has nice amenities like great toiletries that smell lovely, nice robe and a balcony plus a fireplace. Shower had 3 separate water nozzles which was fun! (Although took a minute to figure out how to use) Heated infinity Jacuzzi pool was wonderful! Fire pits near the pool also great! The front desk people were all very nice. The place was clean and they had cookies in the lobby that we tried one day (yum!) Cons: I was disappointed that they apparently did away with the made to order breakfast that they have pictured in their website. Instead of the items pictured was a Continental breakfast delivered in little plastic containers in a box. It was not bad taste wise, and I definitely appreciated the hard boiled egg as a bit of protein along with all the carbs. But it would have been nice to know of this change before booking. Price is fairly high for the cold month of March. We asked about the sofa bed getting set up for our 3rd person in the room and were told we needed to make it ourselves. For the price we paid it would have been nice that they could have sent someone to set up the sofabed, that was weird, and unexpected. Kind of felt like something a much lower end hotel would ask you to do. I debated between 3 and 4 stars since there were both good and bad points. If there was a 3.5 stars option this is what i'd choose honestly. I'd come back again but only if I got a much better rate.

I started this experience with the Whiskey Fog. This is an absolutely fantastic start for the evening, see the photos for the description of this cocktail and watch the video to see the presentation. I had tried this cocktail on the last visit and I have been dreaming about it ever since. This cocktail was every bit as perfectly executed as the first one I tried. From the presentation I the last swallow was absolutely perfect. Next was the appetizer. I selected the Deviled Eggs. I chose the Southwest, Dill Pickle, and Sweet Bourbon Bacon. They were flavorful and well prepared and the presentation was excellent. A very impressive start of the meal. I highly recommend this item. Please see the photos for the description and presentation. For the main dish I selected the Prosciutto Scallops. I do not order Scallops very frequently because I am seldom satisfied with the outcome. Scallops are very easily over cooked. However I felt adventurous and intrigued by the menu's description of the dish. I was not disappointed in the least. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the layers of flavor are very well balanced, perfectly executed, and well thought out. There again, the presentation was excellent. Please see the photos for the description of the dish and the presentation. My wife ordered the Orange Cauliflower and the Stir Fried Quinoa. She in the past has worked at a number of very high end restaurants that serve very sophisticated palates. It is not uncommon for her to spot unfavorable qualities in the cuisine the she is served. She also understands the difficulties involved with restaurants that endeavor to create higher quality food. That being said she was impressed and completely satisfied with her experience. I would like to thank Alli C. our server for the evening. Her hospitality and attentiveness were outstanding. She was definitely a major factor in our very enjoyable evening. I highly recommend this location if you are in Newport Oregon and are looking for a very relaxing and enjoyable dining experience.

There…read morewere seven of us, and we stayed in House 134, the four-bedroom, 1.5-bath rental across the street from the hotel. The biggest positive was the location. The ocean views from the living room and the primary bedroom are absolutely beautiful and were one of the highlights of our stay. There were, however, a few things I wish had been disclosed on the website before booking. First, housekeeping is not provided for the rental homes, regardless of the length of your stay. This also means toiletries are not restocked. By the middle of the week, we ended up purchasing our own supplies. This may be standard for some vacation rentals, but it would have been helpful to know ahead of time since it's different from what many guests expect at a hotel. The biggest issue for our family was the layout of the home. There are three to four steps leading down into the primary bedroom, and there is no handrail. My elderly in-laws stayed in that room and had difficulty navigating the stairs. I think this is important information for anyone with mobility concerns. The primary bedroom also does not have an attached bathroom. The half bath is located off the laundry room near the kitchen, on the opposite side of the house, while the full bathroom is in the hallway. For older guests, a few simple safety features like grab bars and a non-slip surface in the bathroom would make a significant difference. I'm not expecting a fully ADA-compliant rental, but some basic accessibility considerations would go a long way. One thing the photos don't really capture is the scale of the furnishings. The home photographs beautifully, and the décor is very stylish, but it felt more like a staged model home than a place designed for a week-long stay. The living room had a very small, low three-person sofa and decorative accent chairs that looked nice but weren't particularly comfortable for relaxing as a larger family. The three smaller bedrooms would also benefit from having dressers or additional storage for guests staying more than a night or two. The kitchen was clean and attractive, but if you plan on cooking most of your meals--as many families do when renting a home--it could use a better selection of cookware. We found the knives, pots, and pans to be fairly limited for preparing meals. Overall, we enjoyed the beautiful views and convenient location, but I think providing more detailed information about the home's layout, amenities, and accessibility would help future guests decide whether it's the right fit for their needs.
