Hotel Wailea is a privately owned botique hotel that is part of Relais & Châteaux. There is a more significant meaning behind the word and they have several books inside the hotel that gives a deeper dive into the history and other Relais & Châteaux in the world. Apparently it used to be a Japanese club called the Diamond, but was converted to a hotel after seeing the club die out. I booked this hotel for a variety of reasons. The biggest reason being that this is an adults only hotel. Upon doing my research of Maui, I figured that the south west side was probably going to be better for calmer waters and a more tranquil place for a relaxing vacation with my wife who is expecting. I am glad I chose Hotel Wailea rather than other hotels around the area including Grand Wailea or Four Seasons. Another reason is that I was able to book directly on their website and save some money on their insider rate (nonrefundable). I always try to book directly so that it benefits the hotel. It also benefits me because I was able to save 30% on the rate and got a few bonus perks. It was a little bit of a gamble due to the extreme weather that they had prior to coming, but luckily everything worked out and the weather was beautiful during my stay. Being a smaller hotel, I noticed more attention to detail and much better service than any other hotels that I have stayed at in the past. Upon coming to the hotel with my rental car, the valet service greeted us and took care of all our bags and showed us to the check in area. We were greeted with a flower lei for my wife and a kukui nut lei for me. The check in process took a few minutes to explain the layout of the hotel and details. We got a free valet parking since we stayed 5 days at the hotel and also got a $100 dining credit. I am glad we got the valet parking since I read that the parking spots can be tight and distant from everything. The valet took us to our stay with a golf cart loaded with our luggage. Upon entering our suite, there was a welcome gift including some chocolates and alcohol free champagne. The suite is filled with everything you need. They have a fridge stocked with soft drinks and sparkling water that is all complimentary. They also have bottles of water and you can request more. You are able to take beach chairs, umbrellas, parasol and towels to the beach. They have shuttle rides that can take you to nearby area up to a certain distance. They will also pick you up if you call them. The shower and bath had the best water pressure I've seen anywhere. The bathtub was huge and it actually filled relatively quickly. They have a TV in the bedroom and in the lounge area. The outdoor patio provided a really nice view towards the ocean, garden and sky. I stayed very close to the gym which was a huge plus. I was able to use it every morning and was the only one there every morning prior to sunrise. Working out pre-sunrise to sunrise in a open door setting was a great experience. They have some unique free weights that mimics a natural wood look. There is a row machine, a coupe of treadmills, elliptical and peloton for cardio. Other basic machines that uses a pulley and weight system are available. They have several yoga mats as well for any floor exercises. The pool area seemed busy during the day so I went after sunset mostly. The water is heated so it is very comfortable. There is a beautiful sunset view from the restaurant or from the birdcage. Depending on who you ask and what circumstances they have, it could vary what expensive is, but it is certainly not cheap or affordable here. You are paying for more than just a view here. The entire experience is curated for you. The staff here does a phenomenal job at keeping this property well-maintained and running. The restaurant and hotel has a premium price, but for a premium experience. There are other experiences here that you can book on their website or contacting the front desk. The front desk, housekeeping and valet were all so easy to contact with the phone in the room. We tried the in room dining once and although it took some time, it was a nice experience. The service makes this place shine, not that there is a dull spot on premise. It's not a full board Resort, no gift shop and no sundries boutique. There is no social hotel bar. It's not for young families as no kids permitted, and not for sedentary seniors, steps walks and trails abound. What Hotel Wailea has is sublime serenity, impeccable hospitality and a way to exceed expectations at every turn. THIS is the vacation for the vacation. Peace, Tranquility, Seclusion, Kindness... words I use to describe our amazing stay at Hotel Wailea. We started off at the Grand Wailea... it's crowded, loud, service is hit or miss, the food is hit or miss... and for the price you pay... it's not worth it IMO. So when we checked into Hotel Wailea (which ... Yes, is more expensive), I knew THIS was where my vacation would truly start. Drive up the hill to the property (about a mile or 2 from the Grand Wailea)... There are very few "neighbors" nearby Hotel Wailea. It feels like you are nestled up away from the hub-bub. When we pulled up, there was just us and the valet at the entrance... not a huge line of cars and bunches of people milling about waiting for their taxi, uber, car. The unload process was easy and quick. (They also have a "shuttle" service that will drive you to/from the beach, restaurants, shops within the Wailea area. I think it's like a 4 mile radius. Super easy to arrange. We only waited like 10 minutes or so.) Check in was quiet and organized.... Just us and the front desk. No kids running around or adults trying to deal with some issue or get an upgrade. (Oh! And not only is this property small and intimate.... it's also adults only. Huge plus in my book for when I want a quiet vacation.) After check-in, you walk back to the valet stand and are whisked away in a golf cart with your luggage where they drive you to your room and get you situated. Moments later, there is a knock on the door. Truffles and Macaroons! My faves! I savored these.... so much so... that I wrapped up some and took them home and had them several days later and they were still amazing. Our room was spacious and comfortable. While you can tell the room itself is a bit older (the single sink in the bathroom and the shower fixtures bely the age but they were in good condition so no problems)... the furnishings and amenities are new and luxurious. The bed was very comfortable. The patio was quiet and felt like your own private world. The WiFi worked great. The pool was not huge but was perfectly sized for the several couples that were lounging about along with us. No one was waiting for a lounge chair or wondering where to put their things. The 1 group of men that were in a cabana were having a great time (but were not obnoxious) .... I envied their comradery. I wish I had a group of friends that would be willing to spend $$$$ on a fantastic place like this to hang out together. There were 2 pool attendants to help with towels, drinks, food or whatever you might need. The bartender was engaging and fun to talk story with. The Drinks were Fantastic! The Birdcage is a fun lounge with lots of cute lovebirds twittering. The Restaurant is VERY good. Breakfast has lots of tasty options. Dinner is a 3 course dining experience where you pick 1 starter, 1 main and 1 dessert. You can add-on other dishes as you wish. Their wine list... or rather wine book.... is super extensive! Overall.... THIS is the place to stay if 1) you are not brining kids and 2) want a quiet, serene, 1st Class, 5 diamond experience. read more

Our friends invited us to their room here. We decided to look at the pool, and within THIRTY SECONDS of entering the pool area, a pool attendee immediately walked over to ask us if we were guests. Mind you, we are native Hawaiians. Visibly native Hawaiian. This pool attendant didn't ask ANY one else at the busy pool if they were guests. This attendant b-lined from the bar to us as soon as she saw us. When we told her we were in fact guests staying with a friend, she then asked us our room number. I didn't feel the need to prove our legitimacy to her, when NO ONE ELSE had to do the same. All the white guests at the pool were never asked to prove their place at this hotel. This attendant was slightly blonde with curly hair. If you're a native Hawaiian, beware of staying here, you may be required to prove yourself everywhere you go. I have no issue with paying a premium at a restaurant for premium food and service. The food was just ok, but not what one expects from a Chateaux & Relais. I have had the pleasure and experience of staying and dining in many Chateaux's & Relais, The Hotel Wailea restaurant falls far short of the standards. We stayed one week at the Hotel Wailea. The property is beautiful and well maintained. The suite was nicely appointed. We did not utilize any services because we want to explore the community and surrounding areas. The only downside, the guest parking lot has extremely tight spaces. I know this is done to maximize the amount of parking spaces. Not everyone can park within the lines and made it difficult to get out of the car once parked. I did notice a lot of the parking spaces in other businesses were also not very wide. Otherwise, a good stay! read more

We just finished our 5 night stay at Hotel Wailea and are coming back home renewed and refreshed. Service: friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the hotel and surrounding area. Front desk available by text and responded quickly. Food: Amazing! We had breakfast several times at the restaurant, everything was delicious, but the ricotta pancakes are a must. Dinner at the birdcage was magical, with a wonderful atmosphere and surrounded by lovebirds. Both the food and the drinks were top notch. And last but not least the poolside food and drinks were stellar as well, the club sandwich.....yum. The room: all rooms are suites and there are only 72 on property. It was absolutely beautiful, including a limited kitchen and a soaking tube. The living area opened completely up to the magical Hawaiian landscape. Turn down service every night! Property: one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Lush greenery, water features everywhere, birds chirping..truly a tropical paradise. No kids! We have two at home, 3 and 5 year old girls. I love children, but there is something extra relaxing about not being around them . Amenities: there are many and we only indulged in a few. The gym is open walled, with a stunning view, high end workout equipment included. House car that will drive you anywhere in the area. They provide beach towels, chairs and umbrellas on demand for your day trips. We had an in-room massage that was reasonably priced, and so relaxing. Free drinks in the rooms and unlimited replenishment of filtered water. Location: it's not right on the beach, BUT you can see the ocean and it's away from the chaos down the hill. 4-5 minutes from the closest beach, near shops, grocery stores, and the golf course. My husband and I have stayed in a lot of different hotels, in very nice places. The Hotel Wailea was the most relaxing, pleasurable trip we've ever been on. My husband and I loved this resort. The grounds are gorgeous. I love all the waterfalls and koi fish. The service is impeccable. They give you a bunch of free snacks and water in your room and you can ask for refills anytime. They have personalized shuttles to take you on demand to any local locations like the beach. If you go to the beach they will give you chairs and umbrella, towels and water. I loved the fact that this is an adults only resort. It was all couples. The pool area never felt crowded and was so relaxing. It has a great little bar there with attentive service staff. The food is really great too. This place was the perfect place to relax and get away from it all, especially during a pandemic. Though I love my kids, when I'm in Hawaii without the kids, this would be the ultimate place to be, every time. I was relaxed the second we checked in and they took our bags away to our room. We couldn't check in early, because our room wasn't ready yet, but we were able to sit at the pool and enjoy the cabanas and have some drinks, while waiting for our room to be ready. The room and the entire place is pristine, we even made reservations to eat at the fancy restaurant on site. I didn't want to leave the hotel, but I had to since it wasn't beachfront and I needed to go to the beach. This will be my place to stay in Maui every time I come back without the kids. After staying at a Relaise and Chateau property in Le Tahaa in French Polynesia, there wasn't a doubt we wanted to stay at the property in Maui. This resort is an adult property (age 16 and up), so there are no kiddos or babies which was even a more incentive for us to stay here. We stayed for 5 days/4 nights and even though this place was on the expensive side it was so worth it! These are condo converted rooms and we had a very spacious one bedroom suite with an ocean view. The property was immaculate. We were welcomed with bubbly and flower leis. We were escorted to our room and the room was decorated nicely with a bottle of bubbly and sparkling/regular drinking waters available. There is a small kitchenette and a fridge which is appreciated. The little amenities are definitely worth it esp with Maui being expensive. The bed was very comfortable, the shower is amazing, and the patio is great to relax. We visited the pool a few times and it was just us the entire time. We opted not to eat on property since we wanted to explore the Island. There is a free shuttle service that can take you within a couple miles from the resort which was awesome. We took it a few times to the shopping center, beach, and to a couple restaurants. The property is closed off and exclusive to guests. Valet is friendly and fast and the staff was always so welcoming. We watched the sunset out on the patio and the grounds on all 4 nights and it was perfect. Def recommend staying here for a really nice and relaxing vacation. We barely saw other people on the grounds and it was never noisy or loud. Very peaceful and calm. read more

*ADULT ONLY HOTEL* How do I describe the most amazing vacation in one review?? Upon arrival we were greeted by the valet service that guided us to the check-in in the lobby. The lobby is called the "bird cage" with free flying love birds all around where they offer food and drinks. The check-in lady gave us a book with all of the activities and services the hotel offered and gave us all information about the hotel she could offer. We then were guided back to the valet which drove us in their golf cart to get to our room. Through out the whole stay you can use the valet service to drive you to your room at anytime in these golf carts and they can drive you around to different beaches and places they have near the hotel on the island. If you do get taken to the beach they offer you towels and a bag to go with you! We spent a lot of time near the pool which had AMAZING service. The pool had their own lunch menu which was open from 11-4 and they consistently ask how you're doing and if they can get you anything without being over bearing. The pool offers towels for use on the chair and extras to use for after you get out of the pool or hot tub. They also offer sunscreen, different types of floats, and seating with and without reservation. The whole hotel is beautifully built around a man made creek outside a bunch of birds flying around making the whole experience relaxing and serene. When we walked into our room after getting back from the pool we were surprised with champagne to welcome us to the hotel. The room was so clean and beautiful. The outside patio was very comfortable with a beautiful view overlooking plants and the ocean. They also have black out shaded to make the room as bright or dark as you want. They also had different types of sodas and snacks that were refilled throughout our entire stay. They also were very fast when we asked for more towels or needed anything sent to the room. My husband set up a surprise private dinner at the tree house that is around the mango trees they have in their garden for my birthday, which was just magical. Before arriving to the dinner my husband and Chef Conner had a very nice descriptive conversation on our food preferences and dietary restrictions. The dinner was exquisite. It was a seven course meal overlooking the sunset which set into the ocean. For anyone looking for a romantic dinner, this is the place. It is the best dinner you can get on the island with full service and the server and chef are so kind and create wonderful conversation that makes it very comfortable and enjoyable. The server took multiple pictures and even went so far as to ask us to take pictures because the sun was hitting us at the right angle or it was just picturesque that he just had to take pictures. When we were done they gave us a bag with honey, fresh menus that were customized just for us, and a ride back to our room. This is a must do with your significant other. We highly recommend this hotel if you do not want any kids running around or a regular hotel experience. All of the hotels we looked into staying at on the island were just like any other hotel you would stay at anywhere. Greatest hotel experience of my life, hands down. My husband and I spent four nights here on our honeymoon, and every single aspect of our stay was exceptional. My favorite part about Hotel Wailea is how lush and expansive the property is - you can walk around and pick fresh avocados and mangoes from the trees (the gardeners encourage it!), and there are so many gorgeous flowers and calming streams that make it feel almost too picturesque to be real. And because the property is so large and spread out, you don't feel like you're on top of other guests (we never really saw large crowds, and we loved how all of the suites were in small groups of four - two on the bottom, two on top). The rooms are fantastic, with large balconies, comfy furniture, fancy bathrooms, Nespresso machines... definitely matches the luxury vibe of the place (just like the Tesla shuttles and Peloton bikes in the gym!). The pool was definitely where we spent the majority of our stay - they serve the most delicious frozen cocktails (some with fruits picked right there on the property!), and the cabanas are a particularly luxurious touch. Last but certainly not least, the staff here were absolutely phenomenal. Kind, attentive, helpful, warm - they made us feel so at-home that it was truly near impossible to leave. Hotel Wailea was unlike anything we had ever experienced. The best hotel we have ever stayed at, hands down bar none. From the service to the setting, it was perfection. I remember worrying when we booked that we might regret not being up against the ocean; I didn't regret it a single time. The views from our room were breathtaking. If anything, you feel more connected to the ocean because you're looking out on it and taking it all in. We watched the sunset every night from the pool/birdcage area with beautiful rainbow parakeets circling our heads. It's just unreal!! The hotel feels like it's built into the land, so you're immersed in the beauty of Maui instead of feeling like a tiny room in a massive hotel on a golf coarse (like you do at some of the ther resorts). The flora and fauna surround you and you completely unplug. The food is also significantly better than any of the other resort food we encountered (though if you're going to Maui, do make time to go to Tin Roof - the chicken sando is insane!). The Hotel Wailea pool setting is gorgeous and tucked away from the wind, which means you can spend afternoons there when it's too windy on the beaches. Do not miss the Pina Colada! The pool staff made our memories by the pool so special. We spent hours there. That said, we also loved the Defender service where they pick you up in awesome new Defenders and drive you down to any beach you want at any time. We woke up every morning and snorkeled a new beach from about 8am-10am. We also took advantage of all the beach gear and used their coolers, chairs, umbrellas and more to improve our beach experience. So great not to have to haul or buy that stuff ourselves. The staff could not have been kinder and more accommodating. They went so above and beyond! We were recovering from a sad loss on our trip and the staff actually signed a book for us wishing us well that we keep on our coffee table and look at weekly. I mean!!! Even the room cleaning service was above and beyond, with a wonderful turn down service every night that made me look forward to curling up in those big, comfy beds. Sadly, we had an awful experience during New Year's Eve dinner. We arrived at the restaurant around 8:30 p.m. We were seated around 8:50 p.m. for our reservation at 9 p.m. The meal consisted of seven courses. It took us an hour to get our first course. Then everything moved extremely slowly. We told the restaurant staff that we needed to leave by 11:30 p.m. to see the fireworks at Wailea Beach because we had children and had come to Maui specifically for that purpose. When I booked this and spoke with the host, I made it clear that we needed to finish our dinner by 11:30pm.m. We were only able to complete our fifth course, which was rushed through the corses. We barely managed to finish our main course. If a meal will last longer than 2:30 hours, the restaurant staff should notify guests in advance, especially if there are children involved. This was not an enjoyable experience, and it was certainly not worth the $3000 we paid for four adults and three children. The food was also not very good. read more

We stayed here for five nights to celebrate our 20th anniversary, and the place was incredible--it def lives up to the review hype. When we arrived, we were presented with leis, porters took our bags and parked our rental car (valet service is free) and then we were quickly checked-in. Our room was one of the celebration ocean suites, with magnificent views of the ocean. Yes, as other reviewers noted, it was located close to a side road and the occasional noise of a passing car could be heard while sitting on the balcony, but we feel it didn't detract from the setting. There was also a general smell of mildew coming from the AC, but we assumed that was normal for a tropical climate so no big deal. The rooms are indeed well appointed. Beds are very comfortable, furniture is well maintained. Fridge is stocked with sodas, sparking waters and such. And a snack basket is replenished daily. All included in the cost. We used the free shuttle service a few times, which was super convenient. The pool is small, but nice, and the bartender there--James--mixes up some great drinks. A daily breakfast credit of $60 was included in the price of the room; however, service for two was regularly double that amount. (It's not an inexpensive island. Ha.) The food was always hot and delicious, though. While we were very impressed with the hotel, the absolute highlight of our stay was on our last night when we ate in the Treehouse restaurant. I wish this spot had its own review page, because it's a definite standout. Yes, it's a bit pricey, and the menu items were things I'd never have chosen on my own. But in the words of the beloved Cubs' commentator Harry Caray...HOLY COW! In short, the food and experience were both amazing; they definitely exceeded all expectations. We were met promptly at the advertised time by our server, Chris, driving a golf cart to shuttle us from our room to the treehouse. Upon our arrival, we met the chef, Krista, and we were seated. As we learned, they are a team (the A+ team) that is now dedicated solely to supporting the Treehouse. The menu items were sourced locally, sometimes hyper locally with items that grew on the premises or at locations accessible to the chef. As I mentioned, I'd never order these items on my own so I thought I'd be following up this dinner with a pizza elsewhere. But! The food was absolutely delicious. Chris was billed as the server but that title seems to diminish the role. He was server, co-host, and sommelier..all wrapped into one. We chose the wine pairings for this meal and he selected excellent wines. Each wine served with its history and flavors; clearly he did his homework. But while the views, setting, and food were amazing...it was the friendly and engaging conversation we had with the A+ team that really made the evening special. Hotel Wailea is absolute paradise! This is a small, intimate hotel, with not as many amenities as some of the bigger resorts, but I much prefer the tranquility and privacy. The grounds are gorgeous, very lush and tropical and our suite was comfortable and tastefully decorated, with a stunning panoramic view. You really feel like you're in another world! Food at the Birdcage Bar was surprisingly good. The pool area is a little small, but it suits the size of the property. There were ample chairs and cabanas available. It's important to note that the property is not located directly on the beach like some of the other major hotels, so if you want to walk directly onto the beach from your room, this is not the place for you. They do provide a car service to and from their beach area, which is right next to the Four Seasons though. We are already planning our next trip back! read more

Three words: TAKE ME BACK. Truly lovely, relaxing, calm vibes at Hotel Wailea. We had a semi-ocean view room. Our outdoor patio was the perfect place to wake up and enjoy the view. Our room was awesome - temperature controls, soft pillows and linens, huge shower, TOTO toilet, fully stocked mini kitchen area (microwave, fridge, nonalcoholic drinks, local snacks, and macaroons upon arrival), huge TV and lounge area. This room was awesome! So comfortable. The hotel has free parking and shuttle service throughout the Wailea area. We used this to get down to the beach area - where they have complimentary beach chairs and towels. The beach area was around a bunch of other resorts, but it was not crowded on the day we went. After the beach, we walked to some shops where the shuttle picked us up again. The hotel also has a lovely pool area where you can order lunch and drinks. The pool and hot tub never had more than a few people nearby, making for a relaxing swim. The Birdcage Bar was a nice place to get drinks on our first night. We really loved the cocktails and the tiramisu. We also had dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. Both were lovely. All in all, this resort had very chill, laidback, and romantic vibes. Now this place!!! It is truly one-of-a-kind! From the moment you drive in... think of Fantasy Island! No resort feel. The grounds are spectacular not on the ocean but on a hill where the views are better. No riffraff, quiet and very nicely set up! All of the grounds are amazing... the pool/hot tub is open 24 hours... the gym is absolutely incredible because of the view, same for the yoga studio. The restraint and birdcage are also one-of-a-kind! Now what makes this place special is the staff. They are amazingly super attentive to all details. From the valet and the rides to the beach, the cleaning staff, to the staff upon arrival. These people are truly focused on customer service. I have example after example of this. It had been a few years since I had booked a proper vacation (meaning completely disconnected from work), and Hotel Wailea was the perfect place to disconnect and relax. Rooms are gorgeous and a home away from home. Kitchenette, living room, patio with views of the ocean, spacious bedroom, separate tub and shower and toilet and vanity area. Grounds are quiet and away from all the crowds by the water. Very peaceful. Service is attentive and friendly; be it room service, poolside service, concierge setting up activities, restaurant service, etc. The in room spa treatment was heavenly. Gym had good equipment and although a great view of the ocean, especially when using the treadmill, it can get a bit warm since it's an open air gym. Car service is fantastic, so you don't have to worry if you had a few too many at dinner. Food and cocktails are delicious, but it is pricey. I only have 1 recommendation: the concierge should provide a print out for guests if they arrange the activities. We had 1 activity and 1 lunch reservation that were different than what we were told. Can I give 10 stars?? I am ruined for hotels forever. We have never had such a glamorous, incredible hotel experience. From the second we were greeted by valet, we were on Cloud 9. We showed up a little early but valet parked our car and whisked our bags away while concierge poured us champagne and oriented us to the property. Our room wasn't quite ready so they escorted us to the pool bar where the bartender poured us amazing cocktails and kept 'em coming. The room was incredible and well maintained by housekeeping. We were happy to have a little kitchen even though all we did was open a bottle of wine. The kitchen was stocked with snacks and Pellegrinos, all included. The rainfall shower was lovely and we enjoyed the balcony overlooking a lagoon. The views from the Bird Cage lounge and the restaurant were unparalleled. The pool was never overcrowded and there was always a lounge chair with a fresh, fluffy towel available. Drinks and snacks are served poolside with no one snapping at you to keep your beverage out of the pool. We ended up canceling multiple events on our Maui itinerary to simply enjoy the pool and restaurant because it was the most enjoyable experience. We enjoyed coffee and a pastry with the New York Times in the restaurant almost every morning, not wanting to leave. The local shuttle service was great- we were shuttled to the beach and to nearby restaurants in style. We rarely had to wait more than a moment. We booked two excursions through HW- a sunset sail on the Aui Nui and an outrigger canoeing experience. Both could be booked directly through the excursion companies and might be recommended as to put more money in the vendors' pockets, but those two experiences were top-notch and appreciated the shuttle to and from each. I also did aerial yoga for the first time at one of the classes offered by the hotel. We will never stay anywhere else on Maui and have been ruined for hotels forever. The fact that it was adults-only and had only 72 rooms made us feel like royalty. Every staff person we encountered, from the valet to the restaurant servers, was top-notch. My only complaint is that the coffee maker in the lobby never worked while we were there, but all you had to do was waltz into the restaurant for better coffee anyway which they tripped over themselves to give you, free. read more

WORST "MAI TAI" EVER (Great Staff and Ambiance) - I was in Maui for a Health Retreat at the Maui Temple of Peace, near Paia and wanted to explore Wailea and sample a variety of the islands famous Mai Tais. My friend (non drinker) and I toured the beautiful hotel and decided to have a drink at the the amazing "Bird Cage" lobby bar/lounge. The whole situation was off brand for this property. Just looking around, we were greeted by super friendly Sous Chef "Conner" who gave us a tour of the kitchen who told us that the Bird Cage was THE best place to have a drink and watch the sunset. He was right. Watching all the love birds and the sunset was something out of a movie. Our server (Kai) was very friendly and professional. 15 minutes went by and no drinks, 15 more minutes and still no drinks. I mentioned this to Kai who said they had a new bartender in training and they were backed up. He apologized. The sunset was spectacular and what a view! Now 45 Minutes and still no drinks. Finally after an hour the "drinks" arrived. My friend had a non-alcoholic drink which he enjoyed. My "Mai Tai" was just yellow and was literally just pineapple juice. It did not even taste fresh squeezed. It was like canned Dole pineapple juice. There was no light and dark rum which would change the color of the cocktail. It was simple pineapple juice in a pretty glass with a fresh flower. They said the delay was also because the training bartender had to go get rum. (guest should not be told any of this as an excuse). The weird thing was there was no rum. I had my friend taste it and he confirmed no alcohol. The staff told us at the 45 minute mark that our drinks would be complimentary. The fact that we had to wait an hour for "just juice" was a big miss. I have worked in hospitality as a Sales and Marketing Director for over 25 years in many different hotels, resorts and conference centers. This simple service error blew my mind with such an amazing setting and brand like the Hotel Wailea and Relais & Chateaux. After the "drinks" we went to check out the restaurant to see the prix-fixe menu to see about dinner another night, The hostess at "The Restaurant" was friendly and told us all about the menu. We told her about the drink experience and she said we should have come to the restaurant service bar which was slow and staffed appropriately. Some training on team work needs to be done as the restaurant bar could have easily supported making drinks for the Bird Cage - even with a small delay and a cocktail runner. It was clear that the new bartender was not ready to fly solo. The resort has lots of staff. The setting was a 10 but the Mai Tai only gets a 2. So far the best Maui Mai Tai's are Monkey Pod ( drink delivered in 4 minutes and quite tasty and Mama's Fish House (drink made in front of me at he bar immediately when ordered). The answer to your question is YES! The question, "Should we stay here?" Hotel Wailea was the last place we stayed on our two week vacation and it was the only place where we were truly able to decompress. The view from the "Birds Nest" and our room was amazing. We saw whales every day from the hotel. How awesome is that?! Our room was clean, spacious and stocked with delicious goodies. The balcony that looks out over the ocean is the perfect place to hang out and sip on a beverage of choice as you watch the beautiful sunsets. *chefs kiss* The pool was relaxing and we never had any problem getting a place to lounge. The cabanas are first come first serve and on our last day we lucked out and snagged one. It was lovely. The pool staff were personable and were in constantly roaming around the pool area. The flavor and quality of the on-site restaurant and room service was fine. Yes, just fine. For the price you would expect better. I would say it's the overall flavors that are lacking. You would be better off finding places to eat off property. That being said, if you're having a lazy day then eat on property. The exception is the food at the pool. It was always delicious! The shrimp tacos - a must have! We also splurged and booked a dinner at The Treehouse. The chef and server were very personable and the food was again - fine. The bottom line here for us was that it wasn't worth the cost. The view amazing. The fact that it's private is cool, but too expensive for the overall experience. If you've made it this far I'll end where I started. The answer is YES! If you're thinking of staying here and you're on the fence allow my review be the thing that moves you to book.
