Okay, I waited a couple of days before actually posting my experience at Hot Rod's. I was hopeful because there were actual flat top photos in their Yelp identity. Good flat tops. I had an unanticipated day off in town and decided to try ANOTHER new barber. Meghan was waiting for her first cut of the day when I walked in, and I apprehensively asked if she could cut a flat top. As much as I tout not judging a book... We all have had experience that lead us down the judgy path. She confidently let me know she could do the cut, then put me.in her chair and asked a LOT of questions. I knew immediately that a) I was a jerk for silently questioning her ability, and b) this could be one of the best cuts I have gotten in years. She proved me right on both counts. We had a nice chat about the attitudes and actions (both covert and overt) she faces by chosing to work her art in a traditional barber shop. Furthermore, my haircut is fantastic. I just got my first cut from Hot Rod. I have to say, it looks damn good! I'm not a greasy, a hipster, or any part of rockabilly culture. I'm just a dude in a t-shirt and jeans that wanted a haircut. Service is always great, so you will definitely get what you paid for. One problem for me is that they only close at 6pm. Well, I had to search for a barber again. Mike is a rare find with a barber. He has taken his profession to heart, really knows his stuff, and gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had. He had just got back in after lunch hours and wasted no time in getting me into the chair to go to work. The pictures do not do the shop enough justice because being there in person was even better than I had anticipated. Set right next to Hilltop, this place is a hidden gem! I am sorry to say, but I was actually suprised to see how much business Hot Rod's does! Based off the fact that it had to be pointed out to me there was a barbershop there... I found out about this place not from drinking at Hilltop (which is a favorite pasttime of mine), but from a friend who was getting his hair cut there one day. Turns out, my friend and Hot Rod are in the same car club, The Poor Boys! They are the ones who put on Midnight Mass carshow every year. I came in last Thursday to say hello. It was like 6:30 at night, and there was one guy in the chair getting the good ol shave and a hair cut. (Pretty sure costs more than 2 bits. But not too much more) There were also 3 more people sitting in the waiting chairs, waiting to get their hairs did. I left and came back the following Thursday. Now, Hot Rod stays open later hours on Thursdays, he stays open til like 8. Good stuff for those M-F men who work regular hours. They can come in later and get a great do! But the advantage to Thursdays, is that Hot Rod's wife Rosy (who is also amazing) comes in and works too. Wanna know why they come in/ stay layter on Thursdays? Its because Rosy and Hot Rod give free hair cuts to the at risk/ underpriveladged youth of our community every Thursday morning. You can ask them for details about the program they hellp with... I got lucky enought last night that Hot Rod decided to practice cutting womens hair, and Rosy was showing him just a basic trim for girls. I have lots of hair and was not worried about the outcome, theres still a way to fix it! But guess what?! No fix needed!!! My hair was cut to EXACTLY the legth requested! EXACTLY the length! So first I will admit, that I previously got all my haircuts at the Great Clips in Natomas. Simply because I usually got a very good cut, and the girls are always friendly. However I was recently talked into trying something new; stepping out of my comfort zone and going some where that maybe caters to men, with traditional and edgy haircuts alike. I had heard from someone else that this place was run by a really cool guy, then I saw the reviews and it was a done deal. So I came here wanting something different from what I usually get. Something a little more edgy than my usual side part. I received a very warm welcoming, and was quickly showing owner himself, Rod, pictures on my phone of what I was looking for. He assessed my hair and gave me some tips and we made a plan, then he went to work. He offered me a beer too! Now THATS service. I could tell he was taking his time and really focusing on getting it right, rather than rushing for the next customer, so that was greatly appreciated. But on that note, it's not a super busy place from what I could tell. Probably being as it's a small shop, kind of hidden away, and only a couple years old. But thats a good thing! It felt very personal, and inviting. The shop is made up like an old fashioned garage, with toolboxes for the hair supplies and checkered floor. Anyhow, he made good conversation during his work, and made me feel comfortable and welcome, while never missing a beat with what he was working on. In the end I was more than pleased with my cut, and left very satisfied. And honestly, I don't think I can ever go back to Great Clips.
