Over the past 5+ my group has eaten at this restaurant for 2-3 meals over a couple days when we stay at the holiday inn during a canoe trip weekend. Typically the service and food are excellent. This past weekend was terrible. Friday night there were 3 of us, sitting in the bar area and we ordered 2 steaks and 2 appetizers to be served as mains. Somehow, in a restaurant that was not even busy, it took almost an hour for our food. When it arrived the steaks, including a filet mignon was tough and tasted as if they had been cooked while still froze along with them tasting as if they had been cooked on top of a burnt grill. The flatbread pizza came out black burnt. When it was brought up about how burnt it was I was told it would be another 15 to 20 minutes for a new one. But considering I was starving at that point we just let it go. Saturday night there was a large group of us although it took a long time to get our checks. When a couple of our group came back down later in the night they had a ROACH crawling on their table during the meal. Also the buffalo sauce they serve tastes almost as if it is bad, but buffalo sauce doesn't go bad so this sauce is made tasting terrible. They also seem to have taken some of the better meals off their menu which is sad. Hopefully they get their stuff together as its super sad the quality has gone so badly. Also in a hotel resturat why do they close at 11pm? They end up losing a good amount of business to TGIF and Applebees which both stay open late. read more

One of the best restaurants in front royal. Food is always AMAZING and the service is just as good. We are huge fans of the chipotle chicken nachos and the Kansas City burger. We usually order for pick up and the food is always ready on time and we've never had an issue with our orders. read more

This restaurant is the worst. It's attached to the Holiday Inn and seems to attract both hotel guests and people not staying at the hotel. Being a guest at the hotel, I went with my family to both dinner and breakfast the next day. Both were an awful experience: the food was both disgusting and overpriced, and the service generally awful. Breakfast was especially terrible, with a 50 minute wait for pancakes in a mostly empty restaurant ("They need to mix the batter," I was told.) One family loudly walked out as we we were being seated, which should have been a sign. In the table next to me, a woman who knew one of the waitstaff--and seemed to be a regular--actually brought her own box of cereal to the restaurant because the service was so slow. 100% avoid! read more

I hesitated to leave this review; I kinda want to keep this place a secret from the locals. Who knew a Holiday Inn in a town as relatively unsophisticated as Front Royal would house such a great restaurant. Hubs and I tried it as a change of pace for our Thursday date nite. I'd read some pretty good Reviews on Yelp and Google but I was still skeptical. Color me thrilled. Our darling server Isabella recommended the scallops and the filet mignon. We trusted her. Oh. Wow. Husband and I had an absolutely wonderful breakfast! We typically order two entrees and split them. Told our wonderful waitress if our plan to split the 3 egg omelette w/ bacon, sausage, ham, cheddar cheese and mushrooms as well as the malted mini waffles and low and behold our breakfast was served in great time and already split up for us! Was a great presentation and just as delicious. Have been here many times but, this was our first breakfast meal and am glad we tried it as there were a couple of bad breakfast reviews that almost scared us off. Leaving happy and full! read more

Breakfast for the second day I a row has been sub par. Eggs over cooked second day in a row both time were two different styles. Pancakes served raw and messy and tasted like they were made on a dirty grill, egg white wrap tasted like freezer burn veggies were used. This restaurant may be attracted to a hotel, a Holiday Inn no less - gasp. But the place is really cool, and food very good. I would categorize Houghlihan's as a notch or two above other casual dinning type chain offerings in the greater Winchester area. The overall vibe is what I will call upscale edgy. Not too over the top for grandma, nor as stuffy as Buffy. Nice bar area with wide selection of "regular" and micro-brew beers. As with other fern establishments of this type, they also have the fancy drink offerings. Mini drink flights are very unique and include wine, martinis and even tequila tastings - gotta luv it! On to the main event, the food. Not being familiar with this brand at all I had no expectations, but walked away with a resolution to return. Our server [Nina] was just chatty enough to provide some background entertainment during the meal as she insured we were well taken care of. The food was presented in an upscale manner with taste to match. They put all the emphasis on quality versus quantity, and it shows. The menu is very robust with a full offering from appetizers to deserts. A little off the beaten path, but well worth the extra couple of minutes of drive time. Great service, nice atmosphere and really good food. This local will return again for sure. read more

I'm used to sardine-tight conditions sitting at bars inside the Beltway, so when I saw a nearly empty large bar on a Saturday night, the restaurant already earned big points. Salmon was very good. Dry chicken. Dirty eying hostess. 15 minute wait for a refill. The hostess seemed to dislike either me or my apparel for some reason. No idea who she was can't even remember her name, not that she introduced herself as we walked in. Not only did my chicken feta taste like it was bought at foodlion in a box. My chicken was so dry and charred it was hard to eat. Really I didn't eat it. My sister got a chicken blt burger or sorts and it was actually really good as were the fries. That's why two start instead of one. Also on top of trying to choke down the dry chicken I went almost a full 15 min with an empty glass that I sat on the edge of the table before I was even asked if I needed a refill. Actually she didn't ask because she could tell,I'm sure, I needed another. It's just most places I go when you have alcohol they tend to want to keep your whistle wet. Not here. We have dined here several times after a round of golf and we think the food is awesome. Very creative dishes with an Asian twist, fresh ingredients, tasty. Compliments to the Chef. While staying at the co-located Holiday Inn had both dinner as well as breakfast here. Decor inside was pleasant with good service. Started with a chopped salad that had plenty of blue cheese & a tortilla soup that was OK (would pass as needed a bit more flavor). The flatbread pizza was good as were the fish taco's. Typical breakfast fare with large portions & everything cooked to order. Worth the visit especially if staying at the hotel. read more

I can't remember ever being to a Houlihan's before and I doubt I'll ever darken their door again. This one, in a nice Holiday Inn, is quite atmospheric but the service is sub-standard and the food not-so-good. The greeting by the hostess lacked personality and one waitress wearing a very unflattering outfit (frayed jeans and a too-tight T-shirt) talked to a group of guys at the bar, coming back repeatedly, for way too long. My server, the bartender, was pleasant enough but she waited until I was nearly finished to check on the meal and then I had to ask twice for the check. I had meatloaf which I figured must be pretty fool-proof and it arrived barely warm and tasting like it had been made in a factory, microwaved and topped with canned gravy. Best part was the crispy onions, also manufactured. However, $20 including tip is not a lot for dinner so I reckon they can't afford to pay for good managers or cooks. Or train their servers. I picked up a to go order today and the food was excellent. I had the Brentwood Chicken sandwich and my wife had the chicken salad. I arrived at the time they said when I placed to order and the food ready. The temperatures were prefect when ate them cold and hot as needed. The staff were all wearing face masks. Today was the worst experience I have ever had at Houlihan's in Front Royal, VA! When I first walked in they handed me a very limited menu. I went there for the house salad. I love the blue cheese dressing, crumbles and the croutons in the salad. The waitress told me they had no blue cheese dressing, croutons or corn for the salad, very disappointing. I ordered the salad anyway, ate maybe half of it. I ordered the mash potatoes & gravy, the gravy was nasty, it had a sweet taste to it. "YUK"! Then the ice tea tasted like they emptied a used ash tray into the sugar bowl and then mixed it into the tea. Again "YUK"! My husband ordered the fish & chips. Again the worst dinner ever. Lot's of over cooked fries & fish portion was very small compared to prior orders of the same. Between the limited menu, the poor food and lack of staff you should probably just shut the restaurant doors. I feel sorry for the few staff personnel trying to keep the place open! I came here to eat dinner with my daughters one night on a Saturday around 6pm. I was not impressed at all, he place was not busy, but we were standing at the hostess stand for about 10 minutes until someone noticed us and we were seated. Once seated our menus were given to us and the waitress walked away, without a word said to us. We ordered our drinks and food and again not impressed. We have had several excellent lunches here, sharing the two mini cheeseburger lunch and adding an extra house salad, which is huge and very differently delicious -- a chopped salad, really, with croutons, corn, bacon, tomatoes, and more. Food was great...service was truly excellent. Our server Carey was magnificent. Just the right amount of attentiveness with a super personality...made us feel she was happy for us to be her guest. Wish all servers were like her. Food was terrific! The Alfred Chicken, Fish and Chips, and Kansas City Berger were ALL done perfectly. I had the burger (and I have had many of the KC Burgers) and this one was the best. Also stole bites of the chicken and fish...some of the best I've had. We haven't ate here in awhile and we will not be coming back. The kids meal we ordered the chicken was burnt. When we told the waitress she offered to take it off the bill not replace it for our son? My potato soup had no potatoes, the salad had so much dressing it was swimming. The size of scallops that you receive for what you pay is disappointing. We live near the restaurant and have been a couple times as eat in guests and also have done take out a few times. We've given the place a lot of chances. The fish tacos are ok, but the fish does taste fishy. I used to like the buffalo chicken salad but the last couple of times I've gotten really tough meat. Our last take out order was the worst. We got chicken lettuce wraps that included lettuce with visible clumps of dirt between the leaves. While eating the chicken mixture I chomped into a bone. The BBQ chicken flatbread was super dry and we had to add a lot of extra BBQ sauce. We ordered chicken avocado egg rolls but ended up with avocado toast. The toast was ok, just bread topped with guacamole and a hunk of mozzarella. No good. read more

I really enjoy the food at Houlihans - granted I get pretty much the same thing every time, and every time it is pretty much perfect: the steak. It looks pricey on menu but it also comes with a soup or salad (get the Tuscan bean salad) and two sides (I like asparagus, green beans, baked potato). Service is usually solid and I've never had a reason to not come back here. One disappointing point unrelated to the food: I sign up for Houlihan's emails (you get a free entree on your birthday, so do it), and this is the only Houlihans I've been to that doesn't send coupons during the year on occasion. read more

I'm staying in the Holiday Inn attached to Houlihans. I ate dinner there last night and breakast this am. Never again. The food was fine although I expected better based on reviews here. My big problem was the poor service. Once seated for dinner I told my server I was parched and requested iced tea and also a water. She took forever to get this to me. I was in late so it was not very busy. I had the ribs and they were tasty. Once I was done I asked for my bill. I received it and I placed my credit card in the holder. I then waited and waited and waited. I finally got the attention of the bartender who came over telling me my server was making a room service run. Really. This am for breakfast I asked for Iced tea. This was an hour after they opened. No tea. I would have to wait for it to be brewed. I have never had a restaurant not have iced tea available for breakfast. I told my server I needed a minute to decide what I wanted. After about 10 minutes of waiting the manager saw me looking at her. She made some excuse on what happened to my server. She took my order. Once I received it I never saw her or my server again, I nursed the water when it was apparent I was on my own. I was done for a while and had to wait for the manager to bring me my bill. I always tip well for decent or good service. Both bills here saw small tips. I will need to stay at this hotel in the future but I don't see me eating here ever again. read more

Worn out from our trip we opted for the adjoining restaurant to our hotel. The decor was certainly dated and hasn't been touched since Seinfeld was on the air. Very few patrons. The beer selection was fair but had a local craft beer available. Service was spotty with little interest shown in their current position. Bracing for the worst I was pleasantly surprised by my fish 'n chips which was lightly coated and quick fried as were the fries. The white fish was a true filet, flaky and tasty. Encouraged by this we returned for breakfast which was well made however the smoked bacon was crispy and the best I've had since wandering through the Tennessee mountains. While shortcomings were evident you certainly can't fault the kitchen. read more

A little out of the way unless you happen to be staying at the Holiday Inn or finishing up a round of golf next door.
