In a town rich in coffee and breakfast sandwiches, I'm so glad I came to Hound & Mare on a whim. Unmatched breakfast sandwich (to-go, of course) -- The Melrose, with caramelized onion, bacon, aioli, and perfect runny egg. The coffee was hot and freshly brewed, and got a thumbs up from my coworkers. Everything was prepared quickly, and it was extremely pleasant to wait in the large and airy space. Looking forward to post-pandemic times when I can visit indoors more regularly and spend an afternoon in the cute window booth. Bonus points that Jackie and Ben (staff) are super lovely. Two of us got the breakfast burrito, and it was excellent. The chai latte was also excellent. This place is a good time, and very modern.

We are visiting from Oklahoma and noticed this place was always quite busy with people consistently going in and out. We went on a Sunday morning. We were quick to get our food and drink. Prices were very affordable in comparison to some other nearby coffee shops. It is definitely a more social coffee shop for casual conversation versus studying. It may be hard to snag a table during their busy hours. Food was good but nothing very special. Seems like a solid place to go for an early morning start. read more

Yas. I attended SUNY Cortland so I was wary about Ithaca. But the advice for the festive weekend away was "don't sleep in Ithaca". And after arriving late on a Friday night and sleeping IN a Ithaca, we wandered down from the Marriott for a bagel brunch. Do not sleep on Ithaca indeed. Aside from a formative D3 football rivalry, I'm not mad about hanging out here if I can start my day with a bagel sandwich and an iced latte from Hound and Mare. Iced Matcha Latte, with almond milk and I asked the v nice and not pretentious yet knowledgeable barista for "a touch of agave if it's not already sweet". He informed me there was exactly a touch of sweetness already. 5 stars. And not too much ice. You know how that can be annoying. Then my traveling companion and I each ordered a sandwich so we could split them and not have to choose only one. The Pacific was glorious. That honey whipped feta and kale would make my bubbe roll over in her grave from such a departure from the schmear that historically belongs on bagels but she's dead and I'm here and it was delicious. Eat it with a fork to fully appreciate the runny egg. The Cofax had some sesame marinated ribeye steak, fried shallots, cheddar and siracha aioli on a sesame bagel and the meat and cheese on a bagel game should consider itself elevated with a mild Asian flare. We were staying at the Hilton Garden Inn and this place is just down the block so really convenient, and very good so will be back here on our next trip. I ordered the Melrose sandwich, crumb cake and maple latte. The Melrose was really good although I took it back to the hotel so the egg was not runny. If you like runny eggs I would suggest eating it there. The bacon was super crunchy, which I like and the cheese is more of a cheddar wafer so it is not melted, but it goes very well in this sandwich. The crumb cake was a bit of a miss because it was a little too bready; I like ny crumb cake moist and fluffy. I saw someone recommended the NY maple latte and I really liked it. Warning, the maple makes it sweet so unless you are a sugar fiend, you do not need to add sugar. There is seating inside and a couple of tables outside but it was a nice morning and the people outside looked like they were camped out for a long stay. So if you want outside seating, go very early; I was there at 9am. read more

Our hotel was located down the street from this cute little shop and we stopped in one day for breakfast and I'm so glad we did! The menu sounded delicious and we had a hard time deciding what to pick. In the end we settled with avacado toast and a chocolate cinnamon roll. Also a maple latte, which my husband really liked a lot and says it was the best coffee of the trip. The avacado toast was messy but flavorful. I really loved the radish and peppers on it and the toast was nice and thick and stood up well to the toppings. The cinnamon bun was our least favorite as it was dense and slightly dry but I will say they didn't skimp on the chocolate. Wow - currently sitting outside after enjoying my "Pacific" on a gluten free bagel and it honestly might be one of the best sandwich bagels I've ever had. Granted it's a gluten free bagel and I'm not a huge bagel person to begin with, but the flavors and textures in the sandwich were delicious and so fresh! Oh I'm so excited to have this place on Restaurant Row! First of all, props for starting a restaurant in NY during these crazy COVID times. I stopped in there around 11:15am on a weekend morning and could tell it was getting busy quickly. It's the first weekend of the New Year and most spots closed for the week except for here so I think I came right after they got a big pop. This place is definitely learning to get their grove going, but the friendly barista was crushing the drink orders and my mocha was SO GOOD. Probably the best I've had in ithaca and I've tried most of the shops in town at this point. I still haven't tried most of the bakery items I ordered yet but the Peanut Butter Krispies cookie that I did bite into is probably my favorite type of cookie now. It's crunchy and still soft at the same time I don't get it but yum. I like the menu display, it's huge and that's great because I squint at every thing. I definitely will be stopping by for a coffee here the next time I want to shop around the commons or a fall creek walk. read more

Hound and Mare is such a cute breakfast/brunch spot in Ithaca Commons! I got the La Brea which was so good! I usually am not a fan of runny yolks but this tasted so amazing (was VERY messy though haha). The flavors of the sausage and the tomato spread really complement each other well. The Pacific was also very good but personally I don't love the combination of sweet and savory so the savory flavors with the honey feta wasn't my favorite, but the sandwich was still yummy. The Iced Matcha was also DELICIOUS! I really liked their balance of earthy matcha and sweetness. I will also say the store sells out of certain sandwiches early on in the morning, so go earlier if you want to order one of the more popular sandwich options. It is hard to go wrong with any of the choices! read more

Visited Ithaca for college tours during Covid. This little shop near the Commons has excellent baked goods, donuts, breakfast sandwiches and coffee drinks. Staff personable and good Covid protocols. Lots of people had ordered online and were picking up their clearly marked orders. We are in, at widely spaced tables. Currently there is not that much available seating, but we didn't stay long. A shout-out for the bacon in the Melrose sandwich: quite thin, but redolent in crispy bacon flavor. read more

Waited 45 mins for a latte and americano with no explanation, not even exaggerating. There was hardly anyone in the entire place. A man infront of me ordered the avocado toast listed on the menu and was waiting for it, then he asked the counter where it is an they said "oh we don't have that." After he paid and was patiently waiting. Already this place is losing credibility. My friends could have driven down the block to a crowded starbucks and back and we would have had our items in 1/4 of the time. The barista gave us a half assed apology and literally everyone on line was empty handed for an unreasonable amount of time. Love locally owned places that support our community! This new establishment does just that and I'm happy to support them with my business. From the NY maple latte to the avocado citrus mash on sourdough toast with sliced radishes and pickled red peppers I couldn't have been happier. A cute and trendy downtown Ithaca restaurant that delivers on a quality product with friendly service. The server knew the menu and made recommendations to help me decide what to get. Next time I will take photos of my food before devouring it. Hey I was hungry and it looked and smelled delicious. I went with my two daughters. One said her food was really good and the other two meals were just ok. I had avocado toast and the avocado tasted old and runny. They don't offer pain tap water, only a small Dixie cup by a water dispenser. The staff was friendly and food came out quickly. The main issue is seating is very limited and people were lingering. This is a breakfast sandwich/coffee shop that's pretty amazing. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. I had a kale and egg sandwich called the Pacific that was great. It had a roasted tomato and sunny side up egg on an everything bagel. I highly recommend it. Im only knocking one star off because it was a unnecessarily salty. Really cute place- I love the interior. They were out of avocado toast so we shared another toast - that had a beet purée. The bread was fresh and perfectly toasted. Stopped by Hound and Mare for a quick breakfast before work. The space is minimalist but beautiful and has a great atmosphere for breakfast/brunch/lunch. I ended up getting a cup of the Brisket Chili (part of their 2020 Chili Cookoff offering) and which hit the spot for a light-but-hearty morning meal. The chili was perfectly spiced bringing just the right amount of heat without detracting from any of the other flavors. As a "naturalized" Texan I appreciated that the chili wasn't too bean-heavy and contained a generous amount of brisket. I also got the Goldyn Milk beverage which was super tasty - I would have added a touch more sugar but I am notorious for being *that person* who douses her tea with sugar and cream so for a more neutral palate the sweetness level would be perfect. Overall I will 100% be back here when I get the urge for a morning constitutional and some solitary time before a hectic day at work. I can't wait to try their breakfast sandwiches! read more
