I've asked Selena to take care of my puppy twice while I was out of town, and it was great. The environment was great. She lets all the dogs run around the house, and there's a backyard as well. She would keep me posted on the dog's well-being throughout the day and send me pictures via text messaging. There's really nothing I need to worry about when I leave my puppy in her care, and I would definitely ask her to take care of my puppy in the future. Her going rate is $55 a night, which is pretty standard around San Mateo. I've never went to any other dog boarding places before so I don't know how she compares with others, but she's been great. read more

We have been taking our special little pup Kenya to Selena for almost 6 months now, and I must say after shopping around and trying a few different places we could not be happier (and Kenya more importantly!) with our decision! Kenya is a rescue who is pretty anxious about new environments and did not and does not do well in large doggy daycare and boarding based facilities (think Wag Hotels), so we wanted to try something for her to help her and her experiences when boarded! A smaller environment that is not so overwhelming, but instead warm, inviting and loving is exactly what she got when we dropped her off each time with Selena! I have been taking my dog to Hound Away From Home 5 days a week for over a year. Rumple loves it! There are always plenty of other friendly dogs for him to play with, it is never overcrowded. Rumple always feels right at home, lazing around on the couch or spending time in the back yard. They post cute pictures to Facebook pretty regularly, which helps me get a sense for that Rumple's days are like. Selena and the rest are very professional and easy to get along with. I had a very bad experience with these bog boarders, specifically that they lost my dog while she was under their care! I had only been gone for three hours when I received a phone call from a lady two miles away from where the dog boarders was. She had seen my dog running across a major road and so stopped and picked her up. When I called the boarders to ask them what was going on they said they had tried to call me but I did not pick up. Not true, I had no missed calls from them. I believe they had intended to simply find her and not inform me she had escaped through their OPEN GATE! My dog was terrified, had torn open the pads of her feet, and could have easily been hit by a car. You would think a dog boarder would have double fencing or at least leave the gates closed and locked! read more

We absolutely love Hound Away From Home. Selena and her family are just WONDERFUL and their house is perfect for the dogs, with a big backyard and open layout. Our dog has extreme separation anxiety so we needed a place where we could take him every day while we were at work. We tried multiple other daycares and most were impersonal and our dog would cower when going in. Hound Away From Home is completely the opposite; warm, homey, and there are always people and dogs around. Half the time I swear our dog doesn't want to leave Selena's house! Selena is awesome. Clearly a true lover of animals, and a real-lifesaver for us. We have a high-energy dog with special needs that's sweet but has lots of meds to take and needs lots of exercise and love. In even the best of his previous dog-resort style boarding situations (before Selena and DogVacay), our pup has been kind of a nervous mess and come sprinting out of the facility, and then was anxious when he went back. Not with Selena - he literally sprints TOWARD her front door each and every time, and can't wait to see her and get in there for some play and love. He loves it and her! I'm so impressed by the quality of service that I experienced with Selena's dog boarding service. It was my pup's first time away from home, so naturally I was a bit wary. I had spent hours searching for a reputable boarding service but they were either fully booked for the weekend or not responsive. Selena was not only warm, friendly and responsive, but also informed me that the dogs would be under supervision at most times since she works from home. That sealed the deal. I brought my pup over thinking he would have extreme separation anxiety, but low and behold he leapt out of my arms the moment Selena opened the door. He was so happy to have a bunch of new friends to play with over the weekend. I'm not sure if he even looked back at me once! It was originally supposed to be a 3 night stay, but there was an unexpected closure at the San Francisco airport. All flights were cancelled and I was stranded without my pup. Before I was even able to confirm my alternate travel plans back to the bay area, Selena reached out to me saying that if needed, she would waive the cost of the additional night's stay because of the unexpected circumstance. Meanwhile, she had also been texting me pictures of my pup having a great time with his new friends (a lot of them frame worthy). I have been taking my dog, Dexter, to HAFH for over 7 years now. He is very excited to go in their house everyday, and sometime hesitates to leave! Selena is the best. She is extremely flexible, loves the dogs like her own, and spoils them silly while they are with her. Our dog, Brody, is so excited to go to Selena's-- he pulls to get to the front door and once Selena opens it, he bursts inside and that's the lat we see of him :) He spends the day playing with the other pups in Selena's yard and getting tons of love inside (from Selena and Kevin and the other dogs). The dogs are free to go in and out as they like and Selena sends great pics during the day as well and Brody always looks so happy and content. We are so comfortable leaving Brody there and know he is getting the same love and attention he would be getting from us at home. I love the Trotters and the amazing service they provide. If your dog means nearly as much to you as my baby boy, Zeusy, does to me then you will understand how important it is to have some where for your furry family member to be able to stay (so you can have peace of mind) while you are out of town or even to go play for the day. They might seem a little pricier than some places, but I feel that their service provided is well worth it. There are bigger box facilities out there but they don't give you or your pet any personal attention, which I personally prefer for my dog. Zeus used to go to another facility, but he would dread going there as they didn't monitor their play time or how the other dogs interacted with each other and he would come home ragged and most times in pain from too much play (he has had two knee surgeries and has hip dysplasia). I have been boarding my dog with Selena for several months, and have been very happy with the service she provides. She is always very accommodating and provides a true "home away from home" for my dog. He has separation anxiety, so I have trouble leaving him with traditional doggy daycare, but he is always excited to arrive at Selena's home where he feels comfortable and has made many friends -- both human and canine :) It's clear that Selena loves dogs and cares for all of her clients' pups as if they are her own. My husband and I needed someone to watch our 14 month old puggle for multiple days when we were out of town on business trips recently. We were so fortunate to find Selena. She pre-selects the dogs for compatibility so that you don't have to worry about an aggressive dog. We barely are in the door and our little dog is off playing with both big and small dogs. I send my pup to doggy daycare 2-5 times/week and have been working with Selena for 6+ months now. I was always very skeptical of sending him to a kennel and couldn't be happier with how things have played at at Hound Away From Home. Selena is extremely accommodating to my schedule and cares for my pup is if he was her own. She sends me regular pictures of their playtime at the park, wrestling at home, running laps in the spacious back yard, and even the occasional nap on the bed/couch. The most important thing to me is that every single time I drop off my dog, his tail is uncontrollably wagging and he's endlessly nudging at the door to get in. Although he obviously can't speak, this says volumes about his level of comfort and happiness while in Selena's care.
