I have used House Calls Etc. a few times and was happy with their service. Until now. They previously performed a few jobs over the years: things like grout and plumbing. The work was fine and I had no complaints. I recently had them fix a leak in my dishwasher. The worker tried to fix it. He left without verifying that the leak was fixed. He said to run the dishwasher later and let them know if there were problems. Well, the problem was not fixed. That wasn't the end of the world. I emailed them back to ask if they could give it another look. I got no reply. I sent a separate email in case they missed the first one. Still no reply. After several emails and a voicemail over ten days, I never heard anything. This is unacceptable. I would like them to stand behind the work. More importantly, though, I would like them to at least respond to my followup communications. Update: After seeing this review, they repaired the dishwasher at no cost with no additional problems. Jeffrey patched and painted in our home following some electrical work and we're really pleased with the results. Jeffrey arrived on time, explained the what would need to be done, and got right to work. He was quick and thorough in equal measure, doing a great job and rapidly. We didn't have the right paint for one of the ceilings that needed patching, so Jeffrey headed out and got a can that was perfectly matched. They're easy to contact via email or text messaging, which is perfect for someone like me who works way too much. Tony and another gentleman came out to my Fremont condo for some basic repairs, and went above and beyond. I didn't feel the need to micromanage (which I am admittedly prone to.) They even pulled our washer/dryer unit out to grab a bunch of beauty supplies that had been lost back there for ages! They may not be the cheapest company out there, but their prices are very fair and the value is absolutely worth it. I communicated mainly with Brian via email, and he patiently answered all my questions and scheduled my appt very promptly. The guy he dispatched at my place was Tony. I've had these guys out to do a number of jobs at my house and they've been nothing but awesome. I have an old house, but I'm not handy -- it is so nice knowing I can call House Calls, Etc. and they will take care of things. Most recently we had an undermount kitchen sink that fell in, and after getting a bit of a runaround for a week from a plumber we had here for another job, I finally just called House Calls on a Friday. They sent Istvan the next day (Saturday!) -- he did a great job and made it much more sturdy than it had been originally. read more

I hope you won't need their services, but if you own a townhome in Seattle, chances are: You will, and you will be in good hands if you do. We were so lucky to have Brian, Istvan and Milo work for many weeks in very unfavorable conditions (first snow and ice, and then incessant rain) to repair some very extensive water damage resulting from some undetected construction flaws that existed when we bought the home 15 years ago. One of the main support beams of our home had extensive dry rot. The beam had to be replaced and required a structural engineer plus permitting. Istvan navigated the permit process beautifully which cut our wait time down from months to days. A huge relief when it's pouring rain and every day seems like the rot is getting worse. Beyond the beam, much of the back side of our house also had dry rot and needed new sheathing, siding and flashing. It was a painful expense that I wouldn't wish on anyone, but if it happens, you will want people who work hard, are professional, KNOW THEIR STUFF, and have great personalities. They are all of the above and I do recommend them. As far as communication goes, Brian was always quick to respond and I found that Sara in the front office returned my calls and emails within 24 hours. read more

The woman working the office had me send in pictures and take measurements to see if they could do the job and said they would get back to me. When I hadn't heard back I followed up a few days later and she replied that they were still trying to figure out if they could do the job. It's been a week since that conversation. They almost always answered the phone and if they were busy they returned my call within hours. Scheduling our job was a snap and Istavan arrived right on time. Unfortunately when I tried to use House Calls Etc a second time they messed up sending a tech out to my condo twice. My experience with House Calls has been great. We had a pipe leaking in one of our walls and they did a great job of finding the leak, recommending a plumber, fixing the rot damage, and repairing the drywall. On top of that they were always on time (or a little before) with plenty of notice, and did the job quickly. I'll be happy to use them again when / if the need arises. read more

We needed to have an exterior vent cover replaced for our kitchen exhaust fan. We live in a townhome and the vent is approximately 14 feet off the ground, so it wasn't something this acrophobic was going to attempt himself. The whole process was very smooth: I contacted them through their website, talked through the details via email, sent a few photos, and got on their calendar. On the day of service Garrett showed up and was courteous and professional. The work was performed in the time estimated and was done well. Billing was handled the next day and was 100% electronic. Neither I nor my husband are handy people. We purchased a home that was built in 1940. Those two statements do not belong together. I have used House Calls Etc extensively, from flood damage, to patching holes in the side of house, to replacing damaged molding, painting the deck and replacing my gutters. Today they did a dump run for me since we are in the process of moving. They are honest, reliable, and offer options, because let's face it home repairs are pricey even if you are trying to go the economy route. Also they take credit cards! it amazes me how many business don't. I can handle a 3% additional charge a lot better then coming up with thousands of dollars on a random Tuesday. I am really glad that I found this place! Both my husband and I have full time jobs so at the end of the day, assembling furniture in my storefront is really the last thing we want to do. Luis was friendly and professional, and worked quickly! There was a small problem with the pieces that I had ordered (the furniture company's fault, not the contractor's) but Luis was able to explain exactly what we needed to get it done next time. I paid $200 to be told I needed an electrician. This was my second handyman I hired from the Seattle area to help me fix my fan. I had my bathroom fan broken and had hoped these guys could fix the problem. The guy who came out was nice enough and after about 30 minutes of looking at my outlet, he told me that I needed an electrician. However, because he still came out, I had to pay for the visit, regardless of them being able to fix the problem. So I paid almost $200 with tax for the visit. SO if you have any worries that you might have electrical problem, save yourself the money of paying for a visit, and hire an electrician. read more

So I don't Know where to start with this company! I contacted them because of there rating on yelp. Niki was the person I arranged our visit through. She was very nice and professional through out the whole process. But unfortunately the rest of the company that I corresponded with were NOT! We had two appointments the first being a three and a half hour meet greet and get as much done as possible. He showed up without Drywall mud or a drill bit which both where relayed to the company he would need at the first visit. We got a TV hung and part of a drywall project started. ($302.50) Than the following handyman Garrett showed up. In his two hour appointment he glued a piece of wood to the floor and broke a $15 dishwasher bracket! ($170+15) When I asked him to leave after two hours he decided it would be a good idea to be rude to my wife and tell her the next time she wants an appliance installed to call an appliance installer! Also if you want someone to look at your hot water heater call a plumber. Well Garrett thanks for the advice! We will never call House Calls Etc for anything again! I will say when I confronted Niki about my concerns with the amount of work we were getting she once again stayed very professional. After a bit of negotiations we settled on a service call and one hour of service. ($284.96) down from $500 and some change. So If you would like to pay $284.96 for a tv to be hung, a piece of wood glued to the floor and a drywall project started but not finished ohh and have someone smart off to your wife! Than you found your company! Niki earned the one star by the way! read more

Hired Housecalls to regrout 4 windows in my office building. Very clearly told him that I did not want silicone - I wanted new grout. He sends a guy wearing no shirt and covered in tatoos which upset my tenants. He says the job is done and charges me $257.00. I pay him without inspecting - big mistake. His guy applied silicone - no grout. I could have done that myself in about 10 minutes. Then my bill pay service accidently issues a double payment. He doesn't return the double payment - he cashes both checks! Run, run away as fast as you can. Have nothing to do with this company!!!!!!!! read more

Unlike most of the reviewers here, my experience with House Calls Etc. was anything but pleasant. Last month, while I was out of town and needed some work done on my rental property, I had my mother call this company to arrange someone to come out. The work list included: changing three door locks and two deadbolts; re-installing a pre-cut and painted header casing above a door; and filling three small holes in my fir floor with tinted putty. I made sure to have my mother purchase all the necessary materials beforehand, so time wouldn't be wasted running to the hardware store. Knowing this company's policy that the initial cost of having someone come out ($175) included two hours of labor, I felt sure the final bill would not exceed this amount. Having been a contractor myself for many years, I thought two hours would be plenty to do the work involved. Not so. Initially, they billed me for four hours of labor, an amount of time no good contractor in his right mind would charge for the work I needed done. When my mother protested, Brian, the company owner, reduced the bill by $85, or one hour of labor, saying, "There was some kind of miscommunication." Miscommunication is hardly the word I would use; more like overcharging. In the end, I paid over $300 to have work done that any good contractor could have completed in an hour. It wasn't just the final bill, though. The customer service provided by House Calls Etc. was really disappointing. The service man they sent out, Aaron, was less than professional with my mother. While he changed the locks and re-installed the door casing without issue, he got putty all over the floor when he filled the holes. My mother called Brian to have Aaron return a fix his mess. Visibly disgruntled at having to come back, Aaron stood there and didn't offer to help when my mother as she bent over trying to move a couch to reveal one of his botched holes. Now, my mother is in her 70s, and while she's still in great shape, it pains me to think this young man just stood there forcing my mother to ask him for help. I mean, who does that? I will never hire House Calls Etc. again, nor will I recommend them to anyone. read more

I have an old 1946 home that was in a bit of disrepair, and during some DIY remodeling I discovered a leak in one wall, and then later discovered extensive damage to my entire kitchen wall from a second leak. I hired House Calls for each of these. Istvan and Brian came and correctly diagnosed the first leak and showed me how to repair the damage myself (I prefer to DIY when I can to save $$). For the kitchen wall, we had already demo'd the rot from the inside and rebuilt about 8' of frame, but we needed the outside sheathing and vinyl siding replaced and did not want to DIY it on tall ladders. Again Istvan and Brian came and did a wonderful job, including replacing the old siding to look like nothing ever happened. They diagnosed and corrected the problem that caused the damage (old gutters installed wrong). The wall is strong and tight and I'm very happy with it. They really do have a lot of experience and skill and their work shows it. Unfortunately, they discovered more rot than I knew I had, so I was a little surprised at the final cost, as they work by the hour and can't offer a firm estimate up front. But I do feel like this job was done well. I feel like I got what I paid for, and I do highly recommend their work. read more

I moved into a new condo in downtown Seattle and had a list of items that I needed to get done including replacing a handle on a dishwasher, changing out wired smoke detectors, tightening loose plumbing fixtures, replacing a section of baseboard and installing a towel rack. Holy crap! We've used these guys for years and then had the worst experience with them. Apparently that fact that I'm a repeat customer, have spent a few thousand dollars with them and recommended them to others, doesn't amount to anything. After 3 years of calling House Calls for various odd jobs, I inquired about a larger project, one that would take at least 2 days to complete and I was prepared for it to cost me over $2000. We've a few weird interactions with them in the past, but nothing like this. After several weeks of back and forth, with me responding to their numerous requests for photos and job descriptions, and a promise to get back to me with an estimate, they went silent. I heard nothing from them for a week and a half. I finally inquired again and was told that they wanted to charge me $185 just to come out and estimate the work! In the meantime I had gotten 3 other estimates at no cost. These guys might seriously want to reconsider their business practices. Look at how many one star reviews they've had lately! read more

We are thrilled with the result. The process of booking our appointment, allocating time needed and tools that they should bring was very professional and impressive. He arrived as scheduled, was very easy to work with, very knowledgeable and cheerfully willing to do any job we asked. Sara has been awesome with her communication by email and helped schedule our repairs the day after Christmas- which was totally unexpected. Technician Claymore was asked to look after three different bathroom repairs; leaking shower, replace a sink faucet fixture and replace a swinging shower door. He saved me a bunch of money, simply repairing the shoddy work done by original installers with shower door and was in and out of here in a couple of hours.
