Big attitude from manager, no compensation for time, delivery or taking a day off since they aren't open on weekends. Replacement showed up strapped down to keep another customer order safe from the rain on open truck bed. Mine is warped. It's hard to warp hard maple. I ask for refund. Big drama from manager because I wouldn't let him try a 3rd time. Sorry, I have a job. It's not to wait for Houston Hardwoods to do theirs. The 2nd table was beautiful. A real shame it was wrecked in delivery. For over $600 I can just get a walnut table online and without the drama. read more

My husband gets all of our wood to build things from this place. They have a great selection. Lots of young guys walking around with advice and helping you get items off of shelves. You take your dolly to the front with the wood you get and someone will write you up a ticket. You then go into the (air conditioned) office to pay. You pay less if you write a check or pay with cash versus a card. Parking is easy and someone will help you load it up so bring some cash for these young guys who are working hard. read more

The only place I go for hardwood. They have just about any kind of hardwood and dimension that is commonly available as well as a selection of coatings and other supplies. They have a wide variety of veneers as well, and I've never had any problems getting good customer service. The only time I ran into an issue is I needed some acacia wood, which was not available, but that's quite right. They have an amazing variety of exotic woods around the world so it's usually pretty easy to find a suitable alternate. I've also called over the phone before and found they are happy to give information regarding availability pricing. They won my business. read more

My father actually tried to get an employees attention whom was standing at a desk near the front of the business. This employee seemed to willfully ignore this attempt. This may be my new favorite place. It's got a large selection of 3/4 surfaced wood at the front and then a sea of rough sawn in a variety of thicknesses in the back. The rough sawn is the real treasure trove and it's arranged half on the floor and then half on a second story walkway. It's just a pleasure to search out your wood at a place like this. read more

I"m new to woodworking and this was my first trip to a hardwood store and people spoke highly of the place and it's the nearest one to me and over a 3 hour round trip. I got there with a rough estimate of what i needed but ended up having a ton of trouble finding usable hard maple boards. Most of what they had in widths i needed either had splits or enormous lateral cupping that would have made much of the board unusable after a straight line rip. It took us a long time just to find wood I could even use for my first project. It was about 20 minutes till close when we were ready to check and and I needed the boards planed to 3/4 inch and straight line ripped but the gentlemen informed me the machines were turned off and I couldn't do that. Seems like something you might want to alert customers of as a last call sort of thing. I told them i drove over 3 hours to get there and I can't use rough sawn lumber for my project of course. They agreed to do it but clearly just wanted to get out. By the time they were done they kinda got me out of there as fast as possible. Given the reputation i assumed they had done a decent job. I get home to find that the lumber is planed to about .8 to .82 inches all over and since i don't have a planer or a jointer i literally can't use any of it for my project. I'm not stuck with 70 bucks worth of lumber i can't use and will probably have to call them and make a 3 hour round trip back to get them to do the job i paid them to do correctly. Gave two stars because the prices were good and other than this the staff were generally friendly. I might try out the other place in houston and see if i have better luck there. read more

Houston Hardwoods has a fantastic selection. They carry all sorts of wood. I've recently embarked on some project work, and I needed to purchase some specialty wood. They are "the place" to buy marine-grade plywood. Suffice it to say, I was not impressed with the service my friend and I received while buying our wood. The guys in the office were, simply put, jerks. We were ignored, even after making some eye contact and politely requesting some help. I got the impression that helping customers was completely above them. We eventually got some assistance while browsing the floor: the guys working there were very sweet, helpful, and knowledgeable. If they didn't know the answer to our questions, they found out for us. I was appalled by the office guy who rang up our bill; he barely spoke to us or looked at us while totaling up our wood purchases. When we informed him that we would be paying separately, he acted as if we were greatly inconveniencing him since he had to write out another bill. If he would have tried talking to us, we wouldn't have had to "inconvenience" him. Once our wood was picked out and planed, my friend and I packed it up for the road. The floor guys helped us with moving the wood into the truck, and one of the guys came out with plastic wrap to ensure that our wood would be secure. We were pleasantly surprised and very appreciative of his attentiveness. I hope the owners realize what wonderful floor employees they have working at their store. :) Houston Hardwoods would get a 5 for selection; however, the abysmal CS is enough for me to not come back ever again, but if you need good wood, they have good wood and are one of the very few places in Houston to sell it. Thankfully, a handful of employees were very kind and helpful redeemed the attitude and actions of those in gilded office chairs. read more

Went there for the first time today looking for some exotic wood for small projects. They have a nice selection of individually priced short boards. Also a good selection of domestic and imported hardwood in full lengths (you need to ask for prices). Their prices are good and fair. The staff that I encountered were all very friendly. My experience with Houston Hardwoods was great. I was looking to build a walnut tabletop and I couldn't have asked for better results. I am still kicking myself for not going to Houston Hardwoods first. I ended up going to a competitor in the Heights first, and I was shocked when they gave me the price for dimensioned walnut. I ran out of there and first thing Monday morning, I called Houston Hardwoods and spoke to John. I explained what I needed for the project and then told him what the competitor was charging. He said that seemed high and then gave me Houston Hardwoods' price. I about jumped out of my chair because the competitor was about 50% more. John told me that he would pick out some nice boards for me and have everything dimensioned. I was a little wary in not being able to pick out the boards myself, but shouldn't have been. They were ready the next day and I went to pick them up. True to his word, the boards looked great. I ended up finishing the table top and it turned out great. The wood was beautiful, the service was excellent. If you want beautiful wood at a great price, I would recommend Houston Hardwoods. read more

I found a big peice of black Walnut. Price was great. The young man in the office who helped me was great. Helped me with the selection and even put it through the planer for me. I'm a woodworker who has been buying wood and plywood for furniture I've built for a while now. So, I feel the need to bring a dose of reality to the rating for this place. I've been there 4 times, and every time I've come away feeling the same way: the service is non-existent, the "huge" selection is average at best, and the prices beat Clark's (their only real competitor) but you get what you pay for. Three of the four times I've visited, it was a ghost town. No one was around to ask questions of, and I just had to sort of wander around until I found what I was looking for. There weren't any signs indicating where, for example, rough domestics were, and the layout is unintuitive. I could have walked out with their entire stock of ebony and no one would have been the wiser. The fourth time was a saturday, and it was an ant colony, as you'd expect. Also, on one occasion, I bought a sheet of baltic birch (more on this later) and needed it quartered. I paid for it, and the salesman called for someone over the PA to cut it. I waited outside the office for five minutes. Literally five minutes, which if you've ever waited that long in a store devoid of customers, you know exactly how LONG that feels. I was standing right outside the office, so the salesmen had to have seen me. Yet, I continued to wait. No further calls over the PA, no jumping up to do it themselves, nothing. All of this while I was the only customer in the store. I can understand if it was busy, and I can understand if I was standing where no one could have seen me. I don't mind waiting if people are obviously busting their hump, but this was absolutely not the case. I'm used to lumber yards leaving you alone (which I appreciate), but there's a difference between leaving you alone and being unavailable. One other thing, which I understand is going to sound stupid to some, but I really expect to be greeted when I enter a small business. If the lumberyards can do it in Chicago, they can do it here. Ok, so this "huge" selection. The variety of woods is what I would expect from your basic lumber yard. There was nothing special in the number of species. If you've never done much woodworking, then you probably think it's huge because you only know 3 or 4 species. However, there are more woods than there are stars in the sky (well... almost), and they certainly didn't have anything that wasn't run of the mill in the exotics. What's worse, though, is that there were in some cases, only 4 or 5 boards in a particular bin. 3 of them are canoes and the fourth has terrible grain? You're SOL. That's not what I would call a huge selection, and certainly not what I'm used to in a lumberyard. What sealed the deal for me though, was the poor quality. That baltic birch I mentioned earlier? It warped something fierce and made laser cutting difficult. The cocobolo appears to be the boring kind that doesn't have good color, and the curly maple looks to be curly in name only. It looked like they just pulled the boards with the most curl from their non-figured maple! Like I said the prices are cheaper than Clark's, but there's a reason for it. Bottom line is, this place isn't for you if, like me, service and quality trump price. This place isn't an abomination to lumberyards across the universe, but it also isn't anywhere near a 5 star establishment. read more

I have ordered exotic hardwood from Houston Hardwoods on several occasions and had it shipped down to Corpus Christi. Purchasing hardwood over the phone is something I am always wary of doing. However, I have always been very happy with the pieces that I have recieved and the one time there was a problem John immediately rectified the problem. I buy from the shorts and cutoffs section 99% of the time, and the prices are clearly marked and it's easy to find what I need. They have a very good selection of exotic hard woods, and everything is priced fairly. They also have a pricing sheet in the office that you can grab so you will know exactly what the charge will be long before you get to the office. Their policy on cutting lumber is clearly displayed, and they have a lot of staff on the floor at all times so it's easy to get help if you need it. read more

They have a Mill that can make just about anything...trust me, I've given them some challenges. They have a great sales staff that are always busy but they are still friendly and professional. I like that they get me in and out quickly, so I can get on with business. The warehouse crew is always attentive and helpful. They have great prices, always the cheapest (trust me, I always check).
