I went to this company and asked for them to cut a piece of oak wood for me to hang an antique phone on. They said it would be 600 dollars for cut and stain. I thought this was a little pricey but I agreed to it. When I went to pick it up, they handed me a jar of stain and told me I needed to stain it myself. I argued with them and they said it would be another 250 Anyway it was a bad experience. My advise is to avoid this place and shop around for better prices read more

Just go to Lowe's or Home Depot....We purchased hundreds of dollars worth of material here and they didn't have all the materials we needed at that time. We were told this wouldn't be an issue to get the rest. Then, AFTER the purchase, it was an issue and they charged us a 20% restocking fee. I totally understand a restocking fee in the situation that someone changes their mind on something. However, when the root of the issue is the stores fault; that is ridiculous way to treat customers. Especially when the "restocking fee" is not actually costing them anything to walk and put something on the shelf...It's just a BS way for them to not have to refund you a full amount. We try to support local; but this type of BS is a reason why the big box stores win....no fuss and don't have to worry about this type of thing. read more

I had no clue how close Clark's was to my house! It was such a pleasant surprise. Like others mentioned, the selection of wood is GREAT. I'm a newbie when it comes to this stuff, and I didn't understand the difference between board foot vs linear foot or the dimensional lumber. One of the workers walked the first warehouse with me to explain the lay of the land and the various things they offer. I navigated along the rows only to determine that I needed to do a little more research. When I went, there were price sheets along each row of wood in the warehouse so that you could calculate the cost (whether it's board food or linear foot). I left, Googled a bunch of things and came back the next day. Now I was ready for business. People are friendly and helpful, but you have to ask for help. They can help you pick your boards if you want, but the expert guys that come in inspect each and every board to evaluate what they want-- they can't really do that for you b/c you're making the stuff. They can give you an opinion but there's something special about just doing it for yourself. After I picked my wood, I settled (cashed out), then they helped me cut my wood down so I could fit it in my car. They did that for me immediately and helped me load. My experience was great-- and I'd go back in a heartbeat. read more

Who knew this was in the neighborhood?! Well, my husband did... My husband and I are fixing up a 1945 teardrop trailer. Unfortunately it needs a lot of work. Luckily my hubby is quite handy and is up to the task. But we need very specific wood for this trailer. Marine grade, a certain thickness, and also we need that in fir. Thinking I am going to have to go to a lumber mill outside the Houston city limits, this is not a way I was planning to spend my Saturday. In the car, I have the tank full and my tea ready; we head off down Studewood. Then we make a detour and lo and behold, I am standing in front of a cute building. We walk in and my husband rattles off his dream piece of lumber. The nice guys behind the desk say, yep we have that in stock. We then head back to building two and this is a wood workers paradise. We pick out the lumber and 3 minutes later we are back at our house using the lumber. Win, Win! read more

We are rebuilding a canoe and needed a very long piece of White Ash. I called Clark's and spoke to them on the phone. I told him specifically what I was looking for and he was able to tell me what they had before I made the trip up from League City. After telling him exactly what I was doing and how I was ripping the wood, he recommended that I purchase their S2S1E White Ash that is available various lengths and widths that are 1 inch thick. In laymen terms, S2S1E means that the two sides (top and bottom) are both milled smooth. That's the S2 (sides x 2). The S1 means that only one edge (thickness) is milled (meaning it is smooth and at a 90º angle). The fourth side (E) is not smooth and milled meaning it is still a rough cut. Buying wood like this can save you money because the one side is not milled and it is sold by the square foot and not the linear foot. In my specific situation, I'm ripping it into eight separate pieces that are 3/4" x 3/4" x 8' so the rough edge makes no difference to me. I only needed one edge to be square. He recommended exactly what I needed. You should be aware that any width of wood that goes past the 1/2" mark is sold at the next inch. For example, a piece of wood that is 9 1/4" wide is sold as 9". If the wood is 9 5/8" wide, it is sold as 10". My one and only complaint is that I took my wife with me. She was browsing and found some re-claimed wood so my honey-do list just got longer. Clark's has a wide range of specialty woods. I can easily recommend them for your woodworking needs. Like the other reviews say, don't be shy. Step up and tell them what you are doing and they will help you find what you need. They will give you as much or as little help as you request but it is up to you to begin that conversation. I have been wanting to write about this place since I found they had the Victorian style floor moulding I wanted at a price that didn't make my teeth itch. Thank heaven for the ROTD for today and prompting me to write. You would NOT expect a lumber yard in this location, but here it is. What a lucky find. You can get any and everything you want here. I am agog at the selection. Incredibly huge old growth barn beams from a ancient barn teardown, check. Rough cut cedar planks just perfect for a rustic mantle? Check Delicate and intricate mouldings for floor or crown? OH yeah, baby! And the people here are very nice, accommodating and never snitty or condescending EVER. I loved working with them over the phone and in person. We picked out our moulding and when we asked how much they would charge to haul it out here to the Lake Houston area, we were shocked by the low fee. I recommend Clarks to everyone I talk to who needs some great quality products at great prices accompanied by wonderful service. Get yourself down her just to browse, even if you don't have a project. You will find something you love and spawn a project right there on the spot! read more

The selection of wood is fantastic, and the layout of the warehouse is easy to navigate. The customer service is terrible, and the prices are much higher than their local competitors. About the prices - nothing is marked, and they don't have pricing sheets in the office. If you ask them "Hey, what's your bf price on 4/4 (four quarter) bird's eye maple?" they will tell you, but what often happens is you peruse the warehouse and find a board you like, but of course there is no price marked anywhere, so you take it into the office, and wait, and wait, and wait, and then a guy types on a 10 key for about five minutes and comes back with an outrageous price. There is just no transparency in the pricing, and it's impossible to know if you are being treated fairly. I bought a piece of rough milled black limba - a beautiful piece of wood - and asked if they could plane it for me, which is a service they provide. It was a relatively small piece, but I was told that the planer was going to be used for another customer in 30 minutes or, so no, they wouldn't plane it. It's a shame - I live in the area and do a lot of woodworking projects, but unless I need something really exotic and am willing to pay an ultra-premium for it, I tend to go elsewhere. read more

Clark's was recommended to me by another local store as I was looking for a particular type of wood to match some scrap for a project. It was my first time shopping there, and I wasn't sure how they sold their pieces. The man who walked me through their warehouse asked if I had called earlier and then looked at me and said he thought it was a man calling. Awkward and rude. Why does it matter? I selected the piece of wood I wanted, and asked the man to cut it in half. When I went to load it into my car I noticed it was off by a couple of inches.. can't really fix that. He also misquoted the price saying it would be between $15-$20 and it ended up being $28. Not a huge detail.. but maybe don't guess if you're going to be off? I am new to woodworking and this experience made me uncomfortable. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted besides the type of wood, so the man seemed irritated by my lack of experience. I mentioned all of this to my dad who is very well versed in building things and working with wood (engineer). He said he bought some things from Clark's a few years back and also had a negative experience. It's a shame because it seems like they have a nice interesting selection of lumber. And it's convenient to be able to purchase small quantities if you're using it to learn with or for small projects. But the customer service is not great. My (male) friends have been talking about how cool this place is. I have several woodworking projects in mind for Christmas gifts and I want to use some interesting, exotic wood so I went to check it out. First, I was completely ignored when I walked in, there were several guys working but I didn't even get a "hello, how can I help you?" Finally, someone realized that I existed and I explained what I was looking for and he showed me to the general area I needed to be. I said I just wanted to look around a bit and he left. There are no prices on anything so I asked an employee how much a certain piece was and the guy didn't even stop walking or look at me, he just muttered something about not knowing under his breath. Ok...I wandered a little bit more and found another piece I liked, it was at the end of an isle and quite heavy, so I found another employee and asked if he could tell me the price on this piece and pointed in the direction where it was (he could have seen it if he'd have walked about 2 steps). He actually looked at me, but snapped impatiently, "well, what is it?" I was pretty shocked at his rudeness so I just kind of stared at him for a second before he harrumphed at me and walked away. I was pretty furious at that point but I though, since I'm invisible, I might as well observe for a bit to see if they treat all their customers so poorly. I stood in the middle isle of the warehouse for about 5 minutes and just in that time I watched 3 men come in, with questions about prices just like me, and every one of them received a big smile and was given the royal tour. I honestly hate screaming about sexism, I work along side men everyday and try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. This however, was blatant sexism to me. I walked in ready to drop a good chunk of change in this place and I walked out furious and terribly disappointed. My advice, if you're female or you have any respect for females, go someplace else! read more

Went to Clark's on a Saturday, which seemed to be a heck of a busy day. I was amazed that such a place existed, tucked away in the Heights. They had a beautiful selection of all kinds of wood. I was looking for a hardwood to build a dining room table and was not disappointed. However, it is priced per foot. I made a mistake and didn't go in with my required footage in hand. I fudged up on some numbers and didn't get everything I needed. The sales associate, Mike, helped correct my mess up. I also wanted lots of cuts and Jonathan was very helpful and did all the cuts I asked. I saw reviews that talked about horrible customer service, but that is not the experience I had. It was quite the opposite. Friendly, dedicated employees. Prices were also decent and the price lists are on the ends of the aisles. It is a little overwhelming for folks used to going to Lowe's or Home Depot. Clark's is different...in every good way. read more

I needed a specific kind of 2x2 that the big box stores don't carry, so decided to give Clark's a try - this will be my new go-to lumber store from now on! I was overwhelmed with the selection and the helpfulness of the employees - they were happy to let me browse around, but always on hand if I had a question or needed anything, and helped make sure that the boards I was getting were as straight as they had. Prices were surprisingly reasonable, too (surprising to me because I've rarely shopped in a "real" lumber store, I suppose). Nice selection of shorter boards on sale, too, which were perfect for my current project. So many gorgeous hardwoods, I'll definitely be finding more projects to go back for. read more

Great place with great selection. Helpful and reasonable prices. I do wish they kept a price list either printed or posted. My first time there I was impressed with the selection but having just started in woodworking I found it ineffective to be told that there was no price list because of the one hundred and some on species and that I would have to come back to them for the price. When I came back the guy looked at a printout in a binder to tell me the price. Post that printout and it will have avoided people waiting 10 mins for pricing. All you have to do if the price fluctuates is put a disclaimer on it saying prices subject to change without notice. read more

Clark's is the first place I bought hardwood. I must say I was blown away by how expensive their lumber is. But, as I've now got more experience, it's actually pretty reasonable. Although you're paying a premium, their wood is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I have bought from them several times now, and I haven't been disappointed yet. Their customer service is great, too. The last time I went I even got some pointers on hardwood plywood. They do their own milling here, and they claim they have long standing relationships with their suppliers and know exactly where every tree is coming from. I'm going to try Houston Hardwoods for my next project to save a little money, but I have a feeling I may be a little disappointed in the quality. Bottom line- if you don't mind paying top dollar for your wood, you need to be buying it from Clark's. read more

They sell exotic and basic hardwood lumber, trim, veneer and plywood products. It's a great place if you have a fine wood working project.
