Watch out! My brother had our mothers diamonds (2K worth) of stones set at this place. We went back in to get the ring cleaned about a year later the sales person told him that a stone was loose and it needed to be tightened bashing the jeweler that set the stones! Our response was "IT WAS YOUR JEWELER! Sales person then said well we can't clean it until that stone is tightened, so we leave it. Went to pick it up and in the store with all the lights etc. it looked ok but when we get home we see that it looks as though they exchanged our quality stones with cheaper stones! Well let's say hypothetically that you were looking for the best jewelry around. If that were the case than you should come to Houston Jewelers on Stockdale Hwy next to Cafe Med! WOOOO! This is my go to place for ridiculously marked up jewelry. They do however have a great selection of well known designer stuff such as David Yurman and Cartier. I have purchased several watches, a necklace, engagement ring and now a wedding band from this fine establishment to a tune of about a well equipped Toyota Corolla. Now you may all be thinking why I would give a place five stars if it was so expensive. Well the reason is the service. Every time I come in I am the center of their attention and they have helped me with some very tough decisions on purchases in the past. I always can count on them to have what I'm looking for and never rush or pressure me to buy. You can also bring any jewelry you buy from them basically however often you want to be cleaned and maintained at no cost to you whatsoever and it's all done in minutes, not hours or days. I also had them custom make my fiance's wedding band due to unusual shape of her engagement ring setting and that I must say was a considerably lower cost than I imagined it would be. I will continue to come here for just about everything that sparkles. If you are good to me than I am loyal. I won a pricey watch from a radio station and was sent with my gift certificate to pick it up at Houston's. Upon walking in, I was greeted with a smile. I whipped out the certificate and made it clear that I wouldn't be spending any of my pretty pennies. THAT DIDN'T MATTER. They were still extremely nice, friendly, and genuinely pleasant. They showed me my winnings, I oo'd and awed, and as if the whole experience wasn't already great, the nice lady offered to gift wrap my watch while I chatted with the owner himself. Don't go here if you are wearing shorts or jeans, you will be treated like a second class citizen. It is apparent that your financial status is based on what you wear and the level of service you receive. I made the mistake of asking how their business was doing and was told that they could not comment on that since they didn't know me. I would not shop anywhere that treats customers with disrespect which is why I won't be doing business with Houston Jewelers. I bought a watch for my husbands 40th birthday, Steve the owner of Houstons Jewlers was very helpful. I live in San Jose and wasn't able to go to there store.....Steve and Don took pictures of the watch and emailed them to me so that I would have an idea as to what watch looked like. Very wonderful customer service. Helped by a lady named Melinda who was very nice and knowledgable. I took my wedding ring in for repair after a prong became damaged and my diamond popped out. I had my prong repaired, white gold redipped, and ring soldered together for under 100. They also cleaned my ring for free. My ring looked gorgeous and it only took them 3 days to do it. I didn't buy any jewelry so I can't comment on that. The display cases looked nice and I did notice nuts and coffee to munch on if you're waiting. read more

The firm carries the very finest makes of watches and jewellery. The staff are somewhat reserved but very helpful. They took a great deal of time helping me get a watch strap that was the precise size I needed, giving me a very high level of service for a modest purchase. More recently they were very helpful when I needed to send a watch in for repair. The staff was patient and gave me options on the repair . They made sure I was informed about where the watch was being sent and how long it would take. They also called me when they got the estimates of the repair costs and got my approval before proceeding. The store is some distance from where I live but it is well worth the trip. I had a wedding ring setting that I'd wanted to redesign for years but never found someone I trusted. It was clear from my first conversation with him he was very knowledgeable. He spent over 2 hours with me patiently designing my dream ring and when the estimate came in above my budget, he worked tirelessly to restructure it so it was. Well, when I picked it up yesterday, it was far beyond my expectations. I was literally jumping up and down with excitement since he'd included some of the elements we had to cut due to the budget issue at no extra charge just to make sure I was happy. I went in to Houstons tonight. I was wearing a Calvin Klein Suite, very expensive pearl earrings, and not to brag I make over 6 figures, so I can easily afford their jewelry. I told them that my long term boyfriend is active duty Air Force and currently in a remote assignment, so I am helping him figure out what rings types I want for his proposal. This seemed to greatly annoy them. They brought out the ring expert that first showed me the $20,000 plus rings. When i said that I wanted something more delicate for my hands, because the rings went up to my knuckle, he gave another long annoyed sigh. I told him I liked Tacori style rings, a respected brand, and he said that their brands were much more classy than Tacori and seemed insulted when i said one of their brands had the same detailing. He at the same time kept trying to push me to get a ring hand made based on my liking, although half the rings I saw were what I was looking for. Then he started talking diamond prices. I studied a great deal about diamonds before I went looking for diamonds and the diamonds he was trying to sell me were at least double what they should be for the grade and quality. After probably the tenth time he looked at his watch and who knows how many sighs, I said I would leave and explore the designers on my own. I am very disappointed with this jewelry store. I would hate to see how they would have treated me if I came in wearing jeans on the weekends, instead of a suite after work. The only reason I am giving them two stars is because they carry a very unique and beautiful designer called whitehouse brothers. We just purchased our engagement rings from Houston Jewelers and we could not be happier. It is an Elma Gil bridal set and it is gorgeous. This store has the most incredible bridal selection in Bakersfield. The staff is helpful, personal, patient and very knowledgeable. Don, the manager, took his time to educate us on diamonds and gave us various options. You should check out their prices too. We ended up spending well within our budget. As far as we are concerned, in Bakersfield, Houston Jewelers is second to none. We are getting married in August knowing we have found a local jeweler for life. read more
