This seems to be a popular local spot for breakfast. We were seated around 8am on a Saturday and ordered coffee, avocado toast, and a biscuit with gravy. The coffee was very good, and it was clear many locals stop by for their morning cup. The biscuit was a bit doughy rather than flaky, so not quite to my taste, but the gravy helped make up for it. The avocado toast was decent, topped with cherry tomatoes and sprouts. It did need some extra seasoning so I piled on the pepper and hot sauce. Howard Station Cafe is a must if you're in Occidental, and in our case, anytime we are in Bodega. So many delicious options. I usually order the Quinoa bowl, and opted for the Irish Benedict. So yummy!!! Got to taste the pumpkin Waffle. The Purée makes it what it is. And the quesadilla was so good too. It gets really busy in there. Lots of tables inside, but if you have a fur baby, there is outside seating fills up fast. Staff is so accommodating and helpful when picking items, and modifying for special diets. I've been going to Howard's Station Cafe since 1990. I now live in Marin though and don't get up that way too often. We went today and had two delicious breakfasts and fresh squeezed orange juice. This place is great for all ages, by yourself or with a large group. If you're in Sonoma County and want an off-the-beaten-track type of brunch or lunch, this is a quaint, cute, tasty stop!! Cheapskates! While eating out, I order a lot of main course salads and occasionally I request extra dressing. I've never been charged for it. And I was charged $1.75 at Howard's for extra dressing. This was unnecessary and excessive. For instance, restaurants that charge extra for real maple syrup usually charge about $1.25. Everyone understands this, it's like ordering shrimp to go with your salad. But salad dressing to go with my salad? I don't know if this is standard policy or if the waitress resented having to make a second trip to my table or she thought I was a tourist when actually I am a local. I didn't catch the charge till I already paid and left the restaurant or I would've had a discussion with the waitress and the management. Something cheap is going on at Howard Station. read more

All the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Although you order at the counter, they bring the food to your table and checked in with us a couple of times during the meal to see if we needed anything or how things were tasting--wonderful service! Made the short drive into Occidental for breakfast. The small downtown is nice and quaint. Received a friendly greeting and were seated immediately even though the place was pretty busy. Started with a nice cup of coffee. Ordered the corned beef hash and the rest of our party had the Benedict and veggie omelets. I should have noticed that everyone has the giant heart shaped biscuit but I got my go-to English muffin. The hash was good, now awesome. My husband and I were craving breakfast on a Sunday morning in June and decided to come here at the recommendation of some coworkers. We had forgotten it was Father's Day so naturally it was very busy. That said, you could tell they run the place like a well-oiled machine. Otherwise, the service was somewhat lackluster but is somewhat to be expected on such a busy holiday for a breakfast spot. We both ordered the Station Special. Overall it was just okay. My husband was given some questionably small slices of bacon while I had opted for the sausage. While neither of us were over the moon about the food, it could be due to the fact that we kept it pretty safe with our orders. If nothing else, it was a good baseline experience and should we decide to keep Howard Station Cafe in our weekend breakfast rolodex, we both agreed we'd probably branch out and try something more complex than eggs, sausage/bacon and pancakes to see how the rest of the menu holds up. I came in here hoping to have a half-way decent waffle, tolerable orange juice, and a semi strong cappuccino and I was shown how terribly I had underestimated this place. The waffle special featured a carmelized apple so of course I ordered it and it was the best decision I have made in weeks. From the texture of the waffle to the homemade whipped cream and the perfectly cooked apples, I was grateful for every bite. When I was given my orange juice, I was joyfully surpised at the tempture being tempid since fresh orange juice is best served that way and not ice cold. Delicious, pulpy, real. Finally the cappuccino was exactly what I needed to feel human again today. Served at a drinkable temperature with an unpolished foam and sharpness I was craving. The team is so patient and focused while achieving this amazing experience and I cannot emphasize enough that the wait in line was worth every item as this has satisfied my yearning for a great waffle, fresh orange juice, and a lovely cappuccino. Most delicious breakfast today! I had beans greens n dreams plus splurged on bacon Ama avocado, putting the price up to just below $20 for the dish, but omg was it worth it. So yummy with the pesto sauce n bacon yet felt healthy with perfectly done greens, fresh avocado and yummy white beans. I asked for my eggs to be done fried over medium and it was done to perfection for me; no runny whites, Yellow still soft and a little runny. Highly recommended, especially If your trying to not to do the classic greasy dinner thing; and the bacon was so good; obviously a high quality brand, as it was perfectly tasty and smoky and thick not too salty and not burned too a crisp, etc. My husband got the smoked salmon Benedict which i tasted; delicious! Yummy "truly smoked" salmon, NOT the lox type; and the hollandaise was the real deal made from scratch, (ie made with real butter n egg). My son got eggs n bacon n potatoes, all made perfectly. He also got a side of biscuits n gravy because we are all connisoures in that dept, similar to the hollandaise dept, it passed the test made with a bit of sausage, creamy n!). Coffee good too! Sorry, we were so hungry i forgot to take pics first showing presentation. By the time i remembered, only my bean dish looked ok and not demolished. In the end we got to meet the cool owner Val who said he was originally from Roma Gypsy people in Romania. He said most all their ingredients is sourced local and organic! The place is adorable too, an old Victorian themed after a railway station of yesteryear. My husband, sister & I came here Thur 9/4 afternoon. Luckily they were still serving some breakfast items. You order at the register then they give you a table number. I got the Primo Potatoes $14.50 + Eggs $5.25 Unfortunately they put way too many red onions, and salsa, so I had to dig through that to get to the eggs & potatoes. They also put a 1/2 a sliced avocado, & sour cream on top, so it was very filling. My sister got the Breakfast Quesadilla $17.50 + Sausage $3 which was quite large and delicious. A few of my friends came to visit me in Sebastopol. We were deciding where to go to lunch and this restaurant popped up on yelp. I hadn't been to Occidental in a few years and already knew it was a lovely town. The restaurant is in a cute building and has charming decor and comfortable seating. We had just gotten there after breakfast, but there were still some breakfast items available. The service was great, friendly wait staff and fast service. Our water was filled up often and we were treated well. I looked up from eating and both my friends had cleared there plates. So I would say this choice was a success. There are better west county experiences. $80 basic breakfast and coffee for 3, $100 with top and unexpected add on costs. Nothing including the coffee was worth that price. Food was lukewarm servings small - not ok. Cold sour cream cooled down the meal further - ruined. Then $1 for requested small tortilla on a $18.50 meh huevos rancheros and $4.50 extra for a single small sausage and bit of cheese on top of a bland $20 breakfast combo. Not informed this would be additional. Wasn't expecting to pay $100 for simple get together today. The service slow but restaurant not too busy for a Saturday. My family has been getting takeout from Howard's an average of twice a month for years, and sometimes eating there in person. The food is terrific. We love the organic brown rice bowl (which is very tasty), the chilaquiles (both red and green), breakfast burrito, breakfast sandwich and the specialty waffles (especially during the winter months when they have pumpkin followed by gingerbread waffles). Scarlet has always treated me like royalty, as have the other servers. Howard's is unique and a gem in Occidental, which itself is a gem of a place and well worth your visit. read more

My advice to the wait staff is to slow down at each table you approach. People can see your energy. You're slammed, ok, but don't let people see your anxiety. Show your tables you're in control. My husband and I were in Occidental for a weekend getaway, and found this place when looking for a breakfast spot that opens early. So glad we found it! It's a cute little place in a historic building, with info on the walls about Occidental and the history of the area. You can take a look at the menu and place your order at the counter. They have several coffee and espresso drinks to choose from, as well as fresh juices and even mimosas. The breakfast menu has several different options, from eggs and bacon or sausage, to pancakes or waffles and healthy breakfast bowls and oatmeal. They also have a case with pastries at the counter, so they've got you covered no matter what you're in the mood for. The first day that we went, I had the potatoes with mushrooms, cheese, salsa, onions, avocado, and then I added bacon and eggs on top too. It was huge! I had some for breakfast and took the rest to-go and had more at lunch. I also had a mimosa which was generous in size and had fresh juice - so good! The next day we came back and I decided to try oatmeal instead. I opted for the Aloha Oatmeal (but without the coconut). It was perfectly cooked oatmeal with almonds, bananas, brown sugar, and cream on the side so you could prepare it how you like it. It was delicious! Just what I was craving that morning. My husband also got pancakes, sausage, eggs, and bacon, and I tasted the pancakes as well as the sausage - classic and tasty. Service was always friendly and quick. The omelette, which included sausage, jalapeños, cheese, tomatoes, and onion, did not have much flavor and neither did the side potatoes. Came out to Howard's from Santa Rosa on a Saturday morning, beautiful drive and no wait time for a table. My mother's late looked beautiful and she said it was very good. We both got Belgium waffles and they were amazing. I got a breakfast burrito as well that was also amazing. Very nice servers and all around great experience. Very clean in there too for such an old building. Food also came out very quickly, they had a nice looking young man doing a very good job expediting the food and all the kitchen staff looked happy to be there which is a very good sign as well. You order from the cashier first, and they bring your food to your table with the number you are given. Staff was very friendly and attentive. F O O D: I ordered their veggie Benedict, a "side order" of a peaches and cream waffle, and my fiancé ordered their Primo Potatoes with bacon and avocado. Our meals came in super quick even with how busy they were! My Benedict was very tasty, but the toast was kind of hard to cut. The waffle was so light and fluffy, I could have eaten it plain! I was a little thrown off with the canned peaches, but they still worked with the waffle. They also have different kinds of drinks and shakes - I ordered one of their green drinks with apple, celery, carrots, and ginger! It was very refreshing and I was able to take it to-go.
