Insanely expensive especially for the food we ordered. The quality wasn't there but just in the one meal we had. Obviously, we haven't had everything on the menu but one of the items being chili cheese fries shouldn't be that hard to make. A lot of beans which I've never seen in chili cheese fries before. The service was good. Very small town feel and that always been my draw to the place is the country feel and ambiance of the place. Wish it was how I remember it from my teen years. Very classic decor. Reminds me of 70s style shops. That parents would take you to breakfast when you where a Baby. Few places like this still exist. Great fast and friendly service. Food is good a d solid made to order. Location has plenty of parking. Vintage decor my throw some off. But its really a nice throwback and the place is clean! clean. Good food solid food. Basic dishes and some nicer ones including a steak special and there version of a moco loco . 10$ dish but comes with pancakes or biscuits and gravy. NOT A GOOD VALUE! $14 for 2 fried eggs slightly larger than a 50cent piece, 4 burnt bacon strips (ordered not crispy, got crispy), hash browns cooked good (ordered not crispy, got not crispy), 2 wheat toast could have been more toasty, somewhat soggy. 2 other diners. This restaurant will be gone in 6 months or less. People won't pay these prices for greasy spoon food. Go up the street to the Country Cafe or IHOP. Much better food, reasonable prices. Note re: bacon...why do restaurants cook a bunch of bacon in advance, leave it under a heat lamp until it gets burned, then refuse to cook fresh bacon for the ONLY paying customer in the restaurant when they order NOT CRISPY. read more

If you've met Ms. Vivian or had the corned beef hash, there's no way you could rate this Howard's anything under 5 stars! The first thing that I noticed when I walked through the door was the old school decor & smell of old pine wood. From the tables, to chandeliers, & frames on the wall, you feel like you've been transported back to the 1970's. After speaking with the manager, Nino, we found out that this place is over 40 years old. He even joked around and said that our waitress, Ms. Vivian, came with the building. She laughed and agreed that she had applied when she was a young mother & ended up getting hired & has been waitressing there ever since. She said she's requested that when she passes, that they are to stuff her and have her greet the patrons as they walk in lol...silly lady. She greeted all of her customers by their names & even offered the mailman a cold drink when he dropped off the mail! I was blown away by how much energy this lady has! She's was going around topping off people's drinks, wiping down tables, dusting every inch & crevice, including the wooden "antique" rabbit that I took a picture of. She mentioned that one of their customers gave that to them as an Easter present 30 years ago & that thing is now an antique (I thought to myself well then I guess I also would be considered an antique now lol). The corned beef hash is a must-try and the homemade Italian sausage is a winner too! They also offer Portuguese sausage & Spam & eggs!! What?? I'm in love! I'll definitely be coming back again! They carry a bunch of beers too, including Asahi, New Castle & Sapporo! I don't think I've ever been to a coffee shop that carries Japanese beer & Spam! As we went to the front to pay our tab, I couldn't help but ask Vivian where she was from because I noticed her accent. She said, and I quote, "an authentic Italian from Brooklyn". Came here with a couple of yelpers for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised by Howard's and their offerings. The dining room is kept quite neat and clean and the service was spectacular. Very friendly waitress came and made sure we were well taken care of and never left short of anything. Menu is impressive with several varieties of breakfast, lunch, and dinner selections. Variety is nice and it's great when it's good variety and not crap variety (such as hash browns or extra burned hash browns). Corned Beef Hash and Eggs over medium were ordered. Some rye toast, some sourdough toast, and coffee. All were tasty and made fresh. Hot food, hot coffee, and Tapatio sauce make for a beautiful start to the day. I ordered off the menu. Corned beef hash sounded great but I was in the mood for am omelet so I asked if they could make a corned beef hash omelet. Sure! Right on. Tasted great and was very filling. Came with home fries that were crispy but not burned. Ketchup on the side and Tabasco all over made for a strong finish to my meal. Extra crispy side of bacon came out and I was amazed that the strips were more meat than fat and also quite sizable. Thumbs up. Overall, I will say that Howard's is a DEFINITE on my places to eat breakfast. It doesn't look like much and the plaza it's in looks like it's hours from being torn down, but don't let appearances fool you. Howard's is a diamond in the rough with friendly customer service. I was in the area for work and noticed Howard's (my dad's name) Coffee Shop and they had a huge sign in the window "Lumber Jack Special - 2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, hash browns, toast or pancakes $7.99 before 11am." So... in honor of my father, I decided I would have to eat here and have this magnificent Lumber Jack Special. First thing you'll notice is that this place has a true old school vibe. Wooden chairs and tables as well as bar seating and booths. It was relatively empty so I sat down at a booth near the TV. The second thing you'll notice is the clean, spotless and sparkling utensils. The waitress was attentive and came right over with the coffee and she asked me if I would like some? I stated I had my coffee in my car so...before I even finished my sentence there was a full cup of joe in front of me, so I said "sure! I'll take some coffee!" and ordered the Special. The food came out quickly, it was hot and everything looked...well, good and I ate it up BUT nothing really special. In fact, the quality of the food was similar to the lower quality stuff you find at your local grocer. The eggs were extra small. My sausages were literally the Farmer Johns links you find in the frozen food section, I'm convinced they were nuked. The pair of bacon were pretty sad as well...but it was bacon. Pancakes, were good. Hash browns were okay. Overall, not my first choice when wanting diner food. read more

Howards Coffee Shop will always be one of my Favorite spots to hit up for Breakfast. It's a place to relax, read the newspaper and have a cup of Joe. They've had the same servers and cooks as long as I can remember. I'm a regular here so it's nice when they remember what I normally order. Good lord that hamburger was good! I have overlooked this place my whole life because it seemed so plain. What a fool I was! I love burgers and I just had the best burger of my life! I met some friends for brunch today and I was very surprised. The restaurant is old but clean. There was one server covering the entire restaurant, but that wasn't much of a problem because the restaurant was mostly empty. When I got the bill, it was easy to say why on a Sunday morning after church the place was empty. They charge $22 for a plain omelette and five dollars for a cup of coffee. The bill for three of us was $100. Unbelievable! Obviously, we will never go back. I understand small business is tough today and people have to charge more. But $100 for three omelettes? When you first walk in, you are hit in the face with feel of an old time, small town diner. Don't let that fool you into thinking they don't have a good selection. Based on other reviews I had to get the corned beef hash and eggs. I didn't even have time to take a picture because it looked so good. The taste did not disappoint. We just drove in from San Francisco to visit my mom and sister. My sister is a regular customer and raved about this coffee shop. When I think of coffee shops, the first thing that comes to mind is Denny's or IHOP. But we went because my mom loves this place too. She's 86 yrs old and has to watch what she eats. She loves this place because they don't add salt to their food and makes sure she eats healthy, fresh food. My sister introduced us to the owner, Nino. Such a kind-hearted soul and just genuinely friendly! He makes you feel right at home! He takes the time to have a friendly convo and makes sure you get what you want. Cassandra was great! Works hard and friendly too. They take their time to make sure your order is spot on! My hubby and I had the Monte Cristo sandwich and we loved it! It wasn't a skimpy sandwich either. It was packed full of fresh ingredients! It was amazingly delicious! This place should definitely be on the DDD show!! Guy Fieri needs to come to this place! My family has come here for years. It is nice when servers get to know you. This is a family/neighborhood type of diner. It is older and some of the decor shows it. Where do I start?.....First of all, it's really hard to even tell it's a restaurant from the outside. It's not only blocked by trees on the sidewalk, the windows are tinted so you can even see people dining inside. The sign and restaurant itself look like they haven't been touched since it went up 40 plus years ago. No curb appeal whatsoever. No cars parked outside, looked completely dead. That was a bad sign already. Then we go inside after wondering if they were open or not. Completely dead. No music, no one greeting you, nothing. The place is SUPERRRRRR antiquated. And they still have Christmas lights hanging in August?? Seriously, the lights, the stools, the booths, literally everything in there I guarantee has been sitting there at the very least 40 years. It needs a HUGE revamp. They had a TV on. I felt like I was at a doctor's office. No ambience music. The cook in the kitchen is visible and he was standing there doing nothing as they were not busy. There was only one other table being used inside the whole restaurant. Then the menus came. I browsed at the burger menu and the Hawaiian burger is almost $16. You can get the same burger (even better) at Red Robin for $12 AND they give you bottomless fries. Steak and eggs was $30 !!!!! Who in their right mind??? Seriously, the casinos on the strip in Vegas don't even charge that. They charge about $18.99. I know restaurants have to make up what they lost in the pandemic but C'MON. Then the coffee came. Yuk. Super watered down. No taste whatsoever. Terrible. The only thing I have to say is that at least it was clean. But please, go elsewhere. Try Kimmie's on Walker or Off Street Cafe in Cerritos. Way more modern and the food and coffee are great. Mr. Howard, if you're alive and reading this, please, for the love of God and potential customers, knock this place down and revamp. "And tomorrow morning, we're having waffles!" Ted said that to me Friday night and I was very much looking forward to having some yummy waffles. We used our handy dandy Yelp app to find some local waffles and it sent us right to Howard's Coffee Shop. 4stars!? Sounds perfect. When we walked in here (through the back door) we were seated immediately. (So far so good). There was only two other groups in the restaurant. And only one waitress on staff. She brought us our menus and took our drink orders. Then shortly after she came back and took our breakfast order. I wanted the belgian blueberry waffle with a side of sausage. The combo didn't come with the blueberry and whipped topping so she said she was going to charge for that, I said sure. Then Ted ordered a Belgian waffle combo (no blueberry). Sounds good! The plates came out pretty quickly. The eggs were fine. The sausage tasted like it had been cooked once and then recooked later. The outside was super crisp. Yuck. For some reason I was under the impression that I would be getting blueberries IN my waffle but it was just sauce on the top. It was still frozen. I like frozen blueberries but I don't like them on my waffles. The waffle was okay but not spectacular. Ted asked her if he could have a little more whipped cream. She came back with about three tablespoons full. Okay, uh thanks. When the bill came it wasn't itemized (I can't stand that) so we had to guess at all the random charges. There was an extra $2.75, $1.50 & $1.50 charge. I deduced that the $2.75 was for my blueberry and whipped topping addition. And unfortunately the $1.50 was for the extra whip that Ted asked for. I have never experienced being charged for whipped cream. Especially in a meal where whip was already on it. But what was with the other $1.50 charge? We waited for 15 minutes for the waitress to come back to our table. I watched her refill a sugar shaker and put away an A-1 bottle. We made eye contact 3 times and she never came back!! I finally walked up to the cash register (it makes sense that it's a walk up and pay place but she didn't tell us and we were clearly waiting for her to come back!) and ask about the mystery charge. She says it's for the whipped cream that came on my waffle. What!? That's what the $2.75 was for. No, that charge was just for the blueberry topping. For the 3 dollars I paid for whipped cream I could have bought myself a whole stinkin' can. Ridiculous. I paid $28 for this horrible meal. And I can't wait to never, ever come back. read more

Last posting again...wanted breakfast and good coffee but not to go too far and since I'm a local, we decide to try this place. We both got eggs over medium and bacon. He got the home fries and I got the hash browns. My eggs were good, hash browns tasted frozen, and biscuits and gravy were okay. The BFs home fries were tasty and fresh. Coffee was blah. I really wanted good coffee. The decor of this place is unique, kinda of a throwback to some random 1950s/60s or just random. I don't know what to make of it. The bathroom somehow reminds of the restrooms in elementary school, same toilet paper, transparent and fragile. It just looks like they don't put any money into this place yet they prices are not that competitive. Don't care. It's meh to me. whatever. read more

I drive by Howard's every day. I decided to give the place a try but left without eating. The service was nonexistent. Even though there was only one man eating alone in the whole restaurant, the waitress did not bother to greet me at the door or offer to take my order after I sat myself down in a booth. I decided to wait a few minutes to give her a chance after I had sat down, but she never came over. Then I stood at the counter, hoping to catch her attention. No luck. She was too busy chit-chatting with the cook. I turned to leave, expecting her to stop me, but she didn't. I was kind of surprised to see the great reviews and am willing to give them another chance. After all, who wouldn't love a good breakfast joint within walking distance? Hopefully the owner might read this review and have a little chat with the staff. After I go back, I will post another review. :) okay. so i went back on 6/16/10. had to leave again without eating. this restaurant does not accept american express credit cards. maybe the third time will be the charm. will keep y'all posted! read more

Mmm, it doesn't get much better than Howard's. As everyone else has already mentioned, the service is outstanding. There is always someone coming around to fill your coffee cup and to ask if you need anything. The menu is absolutely HUGE as are their portions. I ordered the vegetable omelette and it came with hashbrowns and a choice of toast or biscuits and gravy. I got the biscuits. I could only finish about half the meal but it was so delicious. My friend ordered the pancakes and sausage and that was very good as well. They have the same kind of food choices as other diners, like Norm's and Denny's, but the quality is SO much better and it doesn't leave you feeling like you ate a tub of grease. So far I've only gone for breakfast but I've heard great things about their burgers. Only complaint: it's a little pricier than your average diner, expect to pay about $10-15 per person. But for the amount and quality of the food they serve I definitely think it's worth it. read more

We were mislead by several reviews and stopped by this place while in the area. The food makes foodservice fare seem like sustainable organic cuisine. The omelette was essentially a malformed puck of scrambled eggs and canned ingredients. The "home fries" were effectively rehydrated factory byproduct. The bacon was simply inedible. Suet? Soy? We could not tell. In fact, we ate one strip of bacon not because we wanted to, but rather because we were trying to discern its origin. The prices are not "right." They are obscene. As two adults and a six-year-old we ran up a $40 tab- for food that should be used in a future episode of "Scared Straight." As a restaurant or coffee shop, Howard's is a window to the not-so-distant past when cheap industrial food was desirable. The staff are friendly.
