We went to the Goldenwest Diner because some of our friends wanted to go. It's been there forever, right off the freeway, but we've never stopped in. I was in a group of 8 people and everyone liked their food: hamburgers, Cobb Salad, fried zuchinni, Steak Benedict, and Country Fried steak. It was most similar to a Denny's or IHOP, but the food seemed actually made by hand versus trucked in by a national corporation. It wasn't the kind of group where I felt comfortable asking to taste everyone's food, but my chicken fried steak was excellent! They offered both beef or chicken options. I had a salad and mashed potatoes. The salad was good, as the romaine lettuce was fresh. The steak was perfectly fried and the gravy had so much flavor! The mashed potatoes were slightly chunky and had potato skin in them. They gave the equivalent of a whole potato! It was very filling! Our server was super sweet, but they were out of several items, including all desserts. The Diner seemed a little dark and dated, but was clean. I decided to stop in for breakfast before heading out to do Volunteer work. I'd been looking over their menu beforehand to decide ahead of time. When I arrived, it was a few minutes after opening, and there were a few other diners I there, already, and the television was on. My Server, Rosa, greeted me, and showed me to a booth seat, and asked if I wanted anything to drink. I ordered an orange juice, and a water. Both arrived a couple minutes as I was looking over the menu. She asked if I was ready to order, and I said I was, and I ordered The Meat Lover with Scrambled Eggs, and Hash Browns. My order arrived at my table within 10 minutes, and, it was both delicious, and, filling! Everything was warm when I got it, including the hash browns, which were good and crispy. I'm working through a list of all of the well-known diners in and around Los Angeles County and next up on my list was Goldenwest. It's a traditional LA diner located right off the freeway in a busier part of town. It is a traditional diner in that there is a large menu, fast service, and fair prices. There is a large free parking lot attached to the restaurant and inside is quite large. There is booth, counter, and table seating as well as a room that can be used for private parties. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out extremely fast. For my first visit, I wanted to order one of my favorite dishes, which is Eggs Benedict. I chose the Burger Benedict and was so excited to eat it that I forgot to take a picture. The burger patty was seasoned well and cooked perfectly and overall, it was just really good. I also had a Cup of Chili prior to this and thought it was honestly great. One of the better chilies that I've had in a long time and I would get a bowl next time I am here. Was in the area and a buddy of mine wanted diner food so here we are. I've been wanting to try this spot out since Spire shut down and am glad I got to try this place. The fried chicken was recommended so my buddy got the chicken and waffles w scrambled eggs and I got the dinner fried chicken with baked potato. The fried chicken was amazing, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside! We preferred the dinner version as the waffles were not freshly made but frozen. I've driven by this place a few times and had it in my head to stop in but never did. That was a misstep on my part. It's a great little place to go eat. The menu is has tons of options (I've never seen rib-eye benedict on a menu before!), and the service is top notch! Asked my waiter for something and then someone else brings it in less than a minute. At one point two people were bringing me things at the same time. And they are super nice! Recently came in to visit with my mother and husband and I must say we were all satisfied. The customer service here is top notch. You know it's great service when you hear the staff welcome regulars by their names. 5/5 for customer service, definitely attentive, & polite. A diner couldn't be finer than the Goldenwest Diner... yes we've come here before..... this diner was my "go to" diner in the old days when it was SPIRES... The weekday specials are still posted and the menu is extensive. We came for an early dinner and we were quickly met by our server Deisy. She took our orders with a friendly smile. I ordered the Tuesday Special Ribeye Steak with baked potato and garlic bread. It also comes with a thick tomato based Beef and Barley soup and a fresh green salad with croutons and my choice of blue cheese dressing. Although I wanted chocolate icecream for dessert, Deisy brought vanilla. Not to worry, she brought a refill of rootbeer soda and you guessed it.... It was a tender medium rare feast of a steak for me with a rootbeer float ending. The lovely missus chose the Ribeye Steak but in the sandwich form, and was given a senior citizen discount. I noticed how filthy the interior of windows were first off then came the dirty menus that should have wiped off prior to handing to us. Came in for a birthday lunch with the family. We used to come here when it was Spires, but this was my first time with it being Goldenwest Diner. Still has the same feel, set up is exactly the same. Brought back lots of memories with family that has since passed. The staff were friendly and food was tasty. Can't beat breakfast served all day kind of place. We were so disappointed when they closed down the Long Beach location. Imagine my delight to find that Goldenwest makes a pecan waffle very similar to Ruby's! We had an omelette as well. The place is not fancy but it feels like home. A very relaxed vibe and that customer service that feels like family. FOOD: We both got the Ribeye Benedict. The Hollandaise today was a little thicker than before. Usually it comes out nice and creamy. The steak is well seasoned, slightly salty, and the eggs are poached nicely. I asked for the hash browns to be well done because I like them crispy and they delivered. We didnt get the pancakes today but they are also very well done! Overall I would give this place a 5/5. I went here for some brunch because it was close to the OC Food Bank where my co-workers and I had a volunteer event. It's right on the corner where there's a freeway entrance so it's kind of a pain to get to from the front. Tip: there is an alleyway around the corner that get you there without sitting through traffic at the light. Lots of parking FYI. The diner was really very neat and kept very clean. It looked like there were a lot of long time patrons having breakfast. The service folks are super friendly and were often walking around with ample refills for your coffees. Now on to the food. What can I say?! My fave: the country fried steak and eggs were made perfectly to order and their gravy was delicious! No mistakes on my order although the steak was on the rather thin side, but it was crisply fried and the gravy was significantly more than a dollop. Really tasty! I would definitely go back. Food was good. Steak was cooked good and seasoned perfectly. Was bummed that the home fries are pre-made so I couldn't get them with no peppers and no onions. I think $19.99 is a bit much and $1 up charge for egg whites. The side of bacon $5.49, is a bit high, but I've seen higher prices. Service was good and they were pleasant. My hubby enjoyed his food as well. His waffle combo was $11.99 + $1 for egg whites. We will come back every now and then. The Prime Rib Benedict and Vegetable Benedict work well with each other if you're in the mood to go family style and share with your dining partner or group.
