I always love complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were crispy, but the salsa was a little on the bland side and more watery than I like. The burritos are huge! They definitely over fill it because 2/3 burritos broke open so we had to eat with a fork and knife. The meat was tender, the rice was nicely cooked (not mushy), but it lacked some flavor. I definitely had to add hot sauce to make it better. The avocado fries were very interesting, I've never had them anywhere before. The outside is crispy whole the inside is soft. The sauce is what really tied the dish together, it was some sort of cilantro ranch. As for the service, I can't judge it too much since we did eat here on Halloween. This place is completely overrated. We waited an hour for a table of 4, yet completely disappointed. The only thing that was decent was the chips and salsa, which says a lot about the place. We had the carne asada, enchiladas, birria tacos, and quesadilla al pastor. The carne asada was dry and tasteless and so were the refried beans. The rice tasted like it was old and reheated. The beef in the enchiladas was also dry. The birria tacos are not what you think when you think of birria. They were regular tacos not soaked in the consommé, just a side of the consommé. Lastly, the quesadilla was not mediocre and the pork was cubed instead of pulled, made it a little more difficult to eat. Would not recommend or waste your time d money here. read more

We were passing Salem and decided to do a quick stop here. At 8pm we were able to get seated fairly quickly outside and the inside looked to be a pretty busy bar place. They server free salsa and chips which was nice though the chips were on the stale side. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and tacos. I really enjoyed the enchiladas I had! It was really cheesy and (with some help of hot sauce) had a great flavor as well. The portion size was also very big. The tacos were a pass they were weirdly so wet. Look at the pictures, you can see both on the tortilla the pool of liquid the meat is sitting in as well as the amount of liquid that fell out of the taco just from being picked up! This place is not my cup of tea. We got the jalapeno poppers which is a hard pass. They were bad - the pepper was very mushy and over cooked. I tried a chimichanga and got bacon with it (reco'd by our server). It was very mediocre, made only edible by the bacon. The chips were stale and the salsa had a ketchup-like quality that wasn't for me. Even the drinks left a lot to be desired. The 2 stars are for being able to eat outside and we had a great server, but I can't recommend eating here. Finding good Mexican food in MA is hard. read more

I was super excited to eat at the Howling Wolf Taqueria, I had spent weeks researching places to go to on my trip. To my dismay once I had arrived all the way from florida I was told that due to the fact that my phone number was from Puerto Rico that I would not be able to eat at their establishment. I understood that my phone number doesn't work with certain devices or apps they may use so I simply asked if there could be anyway that they could just write my name down somewhere and I would gladly wait right outside so no contact had to be done over the phone. This place pops up as the best bar in town. We came here on Halloween night and the wait time was over 2 hours. However, they have an outdoor standing patio where you can get food and drinks "to go". It is the perfect compromise for Halloween night where the crowds get super busy. We got food, we got drinks and within 20 mins we were eating. The food is actually pretty good! We've gone to Howling Wolf a couple times since moving back to the area and each time has been fairly consistent with service and food. However, the atmosphere is really hit or miss- we've been there when it's super empty and when it's packed to the brim. This visit, we had the curly fries & queso, good wolf burrito and a chicken quesadilla. They give you a ton of curly fries, so it's good starter if you're with a group. The quesadilla was good, but just your run of the mill quesadilla. My spouse said the good wolf burrito was alright. The service each time we've been there has always been great. My family and I go here annually every Halloween season during our trip to Salem... they have yet to disappoint! The atmosphere here is great. A big space with a lot of tables and some very cool decorations. The menu has a lot of what you'd expect from a taqueria, with some unique additions specific to Howling Wolf themselves. Their sauces and salsas are memorable and delicious. I crave their Howlin' Hot sauce on a regular basis! The staff is always super friendly and helpful if any of us have any questions. They are also super fast, and at times when it's busy they are good at being apologetic for any extended wait times. Overall, if you want a good taco spot or general taqueria and are in the area... definitely give Howling Wolf a try. You won't be disappointed!! read more

BIG MISTAKE. so, I'm Mexican and from CA so I know what good authentic Mexican food is like. And this was not it. My plate came with 3 enchiladas and I ate one. And the only reason I ate the beans and rice is because I drowned it in salsa and was starving! The drink tasted like it had absolutely no alcohol in it. Service was EXTREMELY slow. We didn't have any utensils or napkins and we asked the girl twice to bring some and she only brought one set and then never returned. I asked the other guy who looked to be the main guy perhaps a manager or a lead for help on how to pour the drink from the bag and he rolled his eyes and said unclip it. We're on vacation from California and found this place based off yelp reviews. So we gave it a try. The prices were decent and the photos looked good. Plus I like a good michela and was looking forward to one.... Disappointed is an understatement. The bartender poured too much lemon juice, and plain tomato juice with some salt. Not a fan. I ordered the shrimp tacos, my friend ordered a quesadilla. When my plate arrived, we both made a face like "what the?!" The tacos were plain, just shrimp, a couple cubes of cucumber and a slice of avocado. No sauce. No nothing. The two tortillas it was wrapped in were dry and fell apart. Great spot! Our group of 3 went here for dinner on a Tuesday at 4:30 and it was not busy at all. The service seemed like a more laidback establishment, but still very tentative and friendly. The chips and salsa was good, I am picky about salsa and they did a great job with that. For appetizers we decided to try the fried avocado and it was so good in my opinion. If you love avocado I'd 100% recommend. My entrée was the birria tacos. They were very good, I enjoyed them because I love salty food and went back in fourth using the dip they gave me plus salsa as well. For others they may find it a bit salty and the dip was not birria dip, it was more like an Ajou. The taco had no birria sauce on it and was open which I found a bit odd, and holy cilantro there was a lot. Needs improvement but not bad. I got rice and refried beans as a side, and they were both nothing special. Mix the rice with the salsa and it's a lot better. We also got the chicken fajita chimichanga which was very good, other than the chicken having a fatty bit in it. The rancho beef burrito was a good burrito, they said it was nothing special but also nothing particularly wrong. Our server was very nice and always made sure we had everything we needed. If I could give 0 stars I would. The good: the hostess was super friendly and sat us (party of 4) right away. I chose this restaurant because of how highly reviewed it is but man my experience was completely different. The bad: This was by far the worst meal I have ever had in my entire life and I truly wish I was exaggerating. I ordered the carne asada plate and the meat tastes spoiled - I took a single bite and immediately spat it out, it tasted and smelled sour. The rice was hard and the beans were dry. I had other members of my party try my food and they all agreed something was wrong. This was so disappointing especially since I was the one who chose this place. Outside of our hostess, the service here was NOT good. Our waiter took our order and we never saw him again, until I flagged him down to grab our check. My dad tipped 20% and I was so shocked because not only was the food here terrible (3/4 of the people in our party didn't enjoy their meal) the service here was bad too. I had lunch here last week as we are moving to Salem in the next few months and heard this was a must-try place! I had the blood orange mimosa/Rita. Very good and refreshing. Hubs had something similar, but I can't remember the name, lol. The chips were a bit hard and could have used more salt. The salsa was good and had a heat that built, which I love! I opted for three different tacos, the red sauce Carne, regular old ground beef, and the fried avocado. In retrospect, I shouldn't have gotten the red sauce one because it was very soggy and, therefore, kinda ruined the handheld taco experience for all three options. However, the flavor was so good; the meat was sooooo tender and juicy. The ground beef was seasoned well. Now the avocado one was just eh. Not seasoned at all. Even though I had to eat them with a fork, they were overall good. Hubs got a burrito; it was huge! And he said it was delicious as well. Our bartender was great and friendly.
