This is my second time dining at the Hudson Garden Grill at the NYBG. My friends and I went there on a weekend around 12 pm. The place had many tables filled so I would highly suggest going there with a reservation beforehand. Despite there being a good amount of people service was quick and all servers were very kind and attentive. Our waiter Steven made sure we were taken care of and everyone else were very kind. Our drinks arrived promptly, I will say there was some inconsistency in how our drinks were mixed since one of the vanilla drinks was sweeter than the other but other than that all drinks were delicious. The food on both times that I've been here was delicious with everyone at the table enjoying their meal. I've yet to have a bad experience here. I would say if you are debating trying the restaurant, take the opportunity to as you won't be disappointed. read more

We were lucky to time our visit to New York Botanical Gardens on a glorious mild and sunny spring day. Enough blossoms were out to provide me with a whole bunch of ideas for art projects. On this particular day they had a few food carts at the Clay Picnic Pavilion, accompanied by some very loud music that you might not expect in a bucolic setting. Even though we were starving, the lines were so long at each of the food carts that we decided to look elsewhere for nourishment. We ended up at the rather swanky Hudson Garden Grill in the NYBG. You probably should make reservations, which we had not done. But since it was past five and getting close to the 6pm closing time, we were still able to get seated. Service started out adequate but then slipped badly towards the end of our meal. Our server indicated that the menu would be changing the next week, which is unfortunate, because the corn fritters we had are no longer on the menu. These fritters were the bomb! We shoulda gotten a second round. Perhaps the zucchini chips that are now on the menu are as good. I had the Caeser salad with chicken. It was fine. The chicken was not mixed in or topped on top of the salad, but served to the side. JP ordered the Hudson (cheese) burger with fries. Both the burger and the fries tasted good, but that Brioche bun collapsed and fell apart in poor JP's hands. But you should expect that with the Brioche bun, to which just about every restaurant these days has a slavish devotion. read more

While I was at the Botanical Gardens to see the Nightmare Before Christmas light show, I came with my friends to the Hudson Garden Grill. I had been there before so I know that the menu was something that I always enjoyed. I ordered a Coke and a chicken sandwich with fries. We also got fried zucchini to start. Everything was delicious. To be honest I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the chicken sandwich because it was the first chicken sandwich that I had ever eaten, but it was really good. I was surprised. The chicken wasn't too dry, and the sauce that it came with was really good. I'm always worried that when I order chicken it will be too dry combined with french fries because it's usually overcooked but this was perfect. I also spent the whole meal admiring the art on the walls and I wonder who did the interior decorating because it was beautiful. read more

I have been a member of NYBG for the last 15 years or so and have seen a few versions of this restaurant. One of the things I love is that it has always been able to accommodate my various dietary needs. I am vegan and even though the menu has been updated recently it is still very vegan-friendly. I ordered the Cauliflower Crudo, 2 Golden Sun 75s (simple syrup substitute) and a gin/tonic. My friend ordered the Roasted Beet Salad and an Expresso martini. We both loved our salads and enjoyed our drinks. The decor is always beautiful and the staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. Have been here twice with my partner, once as a walk-in with outdoor seating, and once with a reservation for inside. Overall a good restaurant, nice menu based on seasonal, fresh, local ingredients but some issues with service especially when we sat inside on a busy weekend. Our first visit we had a burrata appetizer, spring veg gnocchi and a short rib that were all wonderful, tasted very fresh and really highlighted the seasonal veg. The service was great for the patio as well. Our most recent visit was memorial day weekend, and it was definitely busy and put a strain on staff. We had reservations for indoor dining but the host (very politely, but still) tried to offer outdoor seating as their indoor seating was pretty full. We were able to sit inside at our reservation time, and we enjoyed the clean atmosphere of the indoor space with the large photographs of NYBG trees. However, service was definitely not as good as our first visit. We put our order in for zucchini chips, a salad and a bacon cheeseburger within 20 minutes, but two couples who had been seated 30 and 40 minutes after us in our section were able to get their entrees before us. Our waitress did not acknowledge us during the hour long wait for entrees, apologize for the wait or say anything to us until after we had received our food. We did receive a complimentary brioche appetizer which seemed to have been sent from the host due to our wait, but still no acknowledgement of the wait from our actual waitress which was kind of weird to me, but she was attentive after we received our meal. Once the food came it was delicious and tasty-- salad was rich but not overly heavy, and the hamburger was cooked well according to my partner. The fries were thin, crispy and well-seasoned. Our dessert, the mocha mousse was delicious and had a good variety of textures with the layers and a good chocolate flavor. We were very satisfied with our experience and would definitely come again for the food, as of course it was a very busy Saturday so service was variable. It is pricey, and portions are not huge, so if you are wary about spending about $30 for an entree this may not be the best pick while visiting NYBG. read more

Well I shall say that although my meal was good when I ate there recently on March 29th I was very disappointed to see that I was charged on my credit card the full amount. Our party had asked to split the bill two ways with my share and tip on my credit card. The other half was in cash with a tip. When the amount posted on my statement it was for the total. It was a beautiful day to eat outdoors. I went there with my two college friends. One was vegetarian, and the other only ate gluten-free, so picking a restaurant or a menu can sometimes be interesting. We planned to have afternoon tea, but they stopped serving it, and we were disappointed. In any case, we had so much fun. After studying the menu, we decided to have tapas. We chose vegan and gluten-free options. The presentation was excellent. They all tasted so good that we ate too much and didn't have room for desserts. I don't know what happened to this place, we were there a year ago and everything was great. Now on October 17, 2025, for which we had a reservation at 2pm, not worth the money or time. FIRST, one of the glasses for water that was already on the table was "dirty", like on the rim where you put your mouth, i should have taken a photo. Had to ask server for another glass. Ok fine no problem. SECOND problem, asked the server what is "broccoli di ciccio"? This was part of an entree. He didn't know! Said he could go and find out. I was about to just google it on my phone, just cause i thought it might have a sauce or something but then my friend sees on the menu it's also a side dish, where it was explained, it's just a type of broccoli. How does he not know this? It's on the menu and there's not much on the menu, this isn't a diner with seven pages. THIRD problem. Our food took WAY too long to come out. Okay, um, this is a restaurant at the botanical garden on a beautiful day, i don't want to be sitting in there, we have limited time to walk around until the sun goes down. First time we ask the server where's the food after like 20 minutes, he says it will be out in a few minutes, okay like another 15 minutes went by, still no food. We had to get his attention to ask again, he said he'll check. Ummm what? He should have been on this already! This is your job! So now he finally comes back with the entrees. Guess what, the food wasn't hot, just lukewarm at that point, which means THE FOOD WAS SITTING THERE READY TO GO IN THE KITCHEN FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES. THESE ENTREES ARE LIKE $30 EACH. this is not acceptable. FOURTH problem, still the service. The server (i should have got his name) never came back to give us a check, nor did he EVER come by to ask how the food is, etc. I go to the bathroom and i see him standing out of view talking with another server. We told him we were ready for the check. He still never showed up. i ask the hostess if we could pay there at the front, she said no you pay with the server. I said i already told him we were ready for check, she didn't do anything to help. I was ready to walk out of there. Finally a busboy or another server had us pay with them, takes like 30 seconds. Like seriously, WTF? FIFTH PROBLEM. While we were finally eating our meal, two people were seated next to us and were never approached after 10-15 minutes by any server so THEY WALKED OUT. so we know it wasn't just us. Guess what, you get a minimal tip and i never want to go back there. At the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, near the Haupt Conservatory, this upscale, over-priced restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. Dress is casual. I enjoyed my tomato bisque, but they don't serve it, or their salads, with bread. If you want bread, there's brioche for $10. I also enjoyed my ratatouille, particularly the sauce. Friends ordered the salmon bouillabaisse, but they complained to us about the small portion and we didn't see any other fish or seafood with it (the way bouillabaisse is usually served). The coffee was served in small cups for $5 and there were no free refills. The waiter had an attitude, but his manager was gracious. It's a mixed bag, so nearby Arthur Avenue Italian restaurants and bakeries will be part of our next NYBG adventure. P .S. No more NYBG parking was available, so we parked across the street in Fordham University's lot for $22. Considering the entrance fee for the Van Gogh exhibition was $70 per couple (for us seniors), it was a pricey day, but the special exhibit, the full bloom of Spring, and nice weather made our memorable and photogenic excursion worthwhile, all things considered. read more

The best thing about the Hudson Garden Grill is the view. The food, not so much. I am an NYBG decades-long member. This iteration of the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. Wherever I travel, I always choose to eat at the museums and botanical gardens I visit since I am guaranteed an excellent culinary experience. Not so on this occasion. There were almost no gluten-free options. Pretty much the only option for my main course was a Caesar Salad with long blades of romaine lettuce leaves, sprinkled with tasteless Parmesan cheese, and what tasted like Caesar salad dressing poured from a jar. Spectacularly disappointing! Definitely not an upscale experience, but certainly upscale pricing. I will wait for new management before dining there again. read more

We strolled in without a reservation after visiting the daytime holiday train show. The inner dining room was beautiful and quiet. Everything was decked out for the winter season. We were 4 adults and 2 kids and were seated promptly in the outdoor covered and heated patio. We were politely notified that we only had until 5 to dine. We had no issues with this, and to the staff credit they worked hard to get us seated, watered, and fed in the allotted time frame. We got the kids menu items first, because nobody wants hangry little folks. We had the burger, soup du jour (clam chowder), and salade nicoise. Everything was right. Kids portions and adult portions were generous and most importantly tasty. They checked on us throughout and everything went smoothly. Service was on point and the food was excellent. The menu has been updated for fall so I don't think it's on their website yet but lots of fall flavors including squashes. The entry area of the restaurant was decorated for the Alice in Wonderland exhibit. Super cute. The whole experience very much exceeded my expectations. I guess I will have to come back for my crispy fried chicken sandwich. Instead, I had the burger which was tasty. Needed a pinch of salt, as did the fries. It came with a bacon jam, which was tasty also but I didn't think the burger needed it. My friend had the couscous salad and she said it was very good. The service was great!! Our waiter was very funny and very warm and definitely the highlight of my experience. His name was Eduardo. My only bone to pick about our meal was paying nine dollars for a small serving of homemade potato chips, which were good but not exceptional and certainly not worthy of charging $9. What a delightful lunch! Not only was every bite of the food heavenly, but each plate was also like a piece of art, matching the beauty and elegance of the Kusama Cosmic Nature Exhibition here in the Botanical Garden. SENAT FARM CHICKEN BREAST: A perfectly roasted chicken breast was lying on a bed of fingering potatoes, which were lined with sweet potato puree and topped by a layer of delicious sauteed kale. More sweet potato puree decorated the plate, and drizzles of honey thyme glaze added the finishing touches. The chicken was tender and moist; the Dijon chicken jus was richly flavorful. ATLANTIC SAPPHIRE SALMON: A nicely grilled salmon filet was lying on an assortment of Romanesco broccoli and cauliflower, which were accompanied by large pieces of wild mushrooms and a creamy cauliflower puree. The grilled scallion acted like a center piece that added the final touches to this piece of art. Beurre Blanc - French white butter wine sauce - which was decoratively sprinkled with fish roe was served on the side. Note that the fish is served medium rare unless otherwise requested. The quality of the food here is mediocre at best. The grilled chicken was overly salty, the fries tasted like it was fried in old oil, and while the burger is passable, it's overwhelmed by an excessive amount of bacon bits, making rendering every bite quite salty. We are garden members who attend nearly every NYBG show / event in a given year. I was excited about the new Alice show and, as a fan of afternoon tea, was especially looking forward to themed dining at Hudson Garden Grill. I'm writing this review to help folks with a similar mindset to manage their expectations. The non-themed food items were delicious and consistent with our other garden experiences. Their tea service, however, was profoundly disappointing. Here's a list of things I had to request: cream, enough pots of water for everyone in my party, SAUCERS for our teacups, a knife to spread jam (because we were only given spoons too big to fit into the jam jar), and lemons so that the advertised color-changing quality of the butterfly pea flower tea could actually be experienced. I had to literally explain why we needed lemons: without lemons, the tea wouldn't change color. We never even got plates for tea, so everyone just tried perching their treats on the end of the saucers, because, at that point, I was too annoyed to ask for one more basic item. I'll also note that sugar is presented in packets like you're at a diner, and the tea is offered as a mix of individually sealed teabags or loose teabags for you to brew by yourself at the table. These are just casually tossed on the table. And, the sugar cookies were visibly over baked. This component of our dining experience was just jarringly out of step with the rest of the meal. The salad was presented like a work of art! The tea and desserts were presented like a sloppy afterthought. In short: gardens, great. Alice installation, wonderful. The rest of the menu, lovely. Everything lacked seasoning and depth of flavor. The Mac and cheese tasted like plastic. The collard greens tasted overwhelmingly sweet, the brisket was dry and the wings were the best thing. Hi. We were at the Botanical Garden yesterday to see the Van Gogh Exhibit. We decided to get something to eat at the restaurant on site. When we arrived, there was no one at the hosting desk, so we sat ourselves at the bar. Soon, after we were reprimanded by the hostess for seating ourselves. We then waited 15 minutes for anyone to attend to us - finally, when we asked the hostess if there was a server there, someone came over and took our order. We ordered the Caesar salad - for 18 bucks - that was a few pieces of lettuce, and it did not even have a crouton. The restaurant was pretty empty, and only two other people were at the bar. A couple that got taken care of immediately. We waited and waited for a server to come by because we wanted some extra ketchup. We never saw our waiter again. I don't know if he quit in the middle of service, but he was gone. Again, we went to the hostess, and she had someone bring us ketchup. We wanted to order dessert but could not find anyone to place the order with. We wanted our check, went back to the hostess, and this time asked for a manager. The manager came over and said they would bring the check,. They did not even attempt an excuse or apology. No one came for another 10 minutes, so we went to the hostess again to say, if the check did not arrive now we would be leaving. Finally, they brought the check. We go out to eat at least 4 times a week, and I would say this was the worst service we have ever received, and it was the first time dining we did not leave a tip.
