We were happily surprised at the good lunch we had here on a Thursday afternoon! In my experience, farm-to-table restaurants, especially when they're the only restaurant available on the premises, tend to be overpriced and often good but nothing special. We treated our son and DIL to a day at the Botanical Gardens and lunch out, so we didn't want the cafe's generally pre-packaged meal. Made a reservation; we were early, they had the room and seated us right away. Everyone easily found something to choose. Son and husband had the crispy chicken sandwich. No problem at all to eliminate the bacon from one of them. Each came with a generous portion of really delicious crispy fries. The sandwich itself was tall and ample. DIL had the Senat Farms Crispy Chicken Cobb salad (I guess the chef's into frying?) and she enjoyed it. It came not like your usual Cobb, but sort-of a tower, each element separately piled on, and she just cut it and mixed it. The only thing I thought could have been better was there appeared to be plenty of dressing left at the bottom of the bowl with a few soggy lettuce leaves. I can't rave enough about my quinoa dish, though! I thought it was absolutely freezing in the restaurant so I wanted a hot meal if possible. The Harvest Vegetable Quinotto, creamy quinoa risotto with fresh vegetables, called my name. I don't know what variety of cheese made it creamy, the menu didn't mention it, just Arbequino olive oil (but I'm sure there was some cheese in there!) and I should have taken a picture. The vegetables were artistically arranged on the cheesy quinoa. I enjoyed purple and white cauliflower florets; strips of carrots and parsnips; maybe something else as well. All I can say is that the meld of flavors and textures made this dish amazing! Our server was a friendly and competent young man. He was understanding when instead of coffee/tea and dessert we asked for the check so we could see a bit more of the Gardens before the skies opened up. So if you want a beautiful ambiance (there's plenty of outdoor seating as well, but in midday we didn't think the umbrellas would provide enough shade for all 4 of us) and a thoughtfully, deliciously, prepared lunch, with pleasant service, I recommend this place. read more

Everything was so fresh and delicious! A fun stop while at the Bronx Botantical Garden. It's a little sleepy and closes very early, but for a lunch or early dinner, it's a great option. Additionally, the staff was very knowledgeable for gluten free options and dietary restrictions! We had the salmon and the quinotto, which was a fun new take on a risotto-like dish. The vegetables on both of the dishes were fresh and cooked perfectly. The restaurant is bright and quiet, and is probably perfect for lunch or brunch as well. read more

Hi. We were at the Botanical Garden yesterday to see the Van Gogh Exhibit. We decided to get something to eat at the restaurant on site. When we arrived, there was no one at the hosting desk, so we sat ourselves at the bar. Soon, after we were reprimanded by the hostess for seating ourselves. We then waited 15 minutes for anyone to attend to us - finally, when we asked the hostess if there was a server there, someone came over and took our order. We ordered the Caesar salad - for 18 bucks - that was a few pieces of lettuce, and it did not even have a crouton. The restaurant was pretty empty, and only two other people were at the bar. A couple that got taken care of immediately. We waited and waited for a server to come by because we wanted some extra ketchup. We never saw our waiter again. I don't know if he quit in the middle of service, but he was gone. Again, we went to the hostess, and she had someone bring us ketchup. We wanted to order dessert but could not find anyone to place the order with. We wanted our check, went back to the hostess, and this time asked for a manager. The manager came over and said they would bring the check,. They did not even attempt an excuse or apology. No one came for another 10 minutes, so we went to the hostess again to say, if the check did not arrive now we would be leaving. Finally, they brought the check. We go out to eat at least 4 times a week, and I would say this was the worst service we have ever received, and it was the first time dining we did not leave a tip. I have been to this restaurant before - but last time I sat at a table and maybe that was the difference. Walked in and sat at the bar, because I only wanted to eat something light - totally ignored for 15 minutes. I went to the hostess stand and asked if there was service at the bar, even though it is a totally open kitchen and I could see everyone - I wasn't even asked if I wanted water. Finally, a waiter comes over (annoyed) asked if I wanted water, yes - thank you. Then took my order and that is the last time I ever saw him. Ordered a salad and fries - $28 for a Caesar salad - 4 pieces of lettuce, not even croutons on top. Fine ate the salad, needed more ketchup - no one comes by - asked another waitress for some ketchup - she is clearly annoyed that I bothered her. Continued waiting to see if anyone is going to ask me if I wanted something else to eat, dessert, coffee, etc. - no one asked. So now I want the check, still waiting and looking for the waiter - can't find him. Saw someone in a suit, asked if he was the manager and he said "yes" - I said I have not seen my waiter since I ordered, can I please get my check? The manager then disappears. I get up again and find the manager and he is running food - so I asked him again - he ignores me and walks away. A hostess then asked a waiter passing by to give me the check. I have never seen such display of attitude and incompetence! It is a shame, because the food tasted good. The service and ambiance are top notch. But the food caused 3 of us various digestive issues. Highly suspect old oil as we all had the fries. For the price of their food, I expect more care in their preparation. Moreover, the vegan burger was ill conceived, falling apart almost immediately. The crispy chicken, usually good and juicy, was dry as a bone in the thin parts and juicy only in the thicker parts. But most of it was the coating with very little chicken. Out with a party of six on a recent Saturday, we waited 45 minutes ( no exaggeration) for three crispy chicken sandwiches, one hamburgers and two salads to arrive. 3.5 stars, but rounding up because it's really not bad considering it is a restaurant on the premises of a park/garden. You likely need to make a reservation for this place if it's a weekend, unless you come right at opening. My boyfriend and I were lucky and came here right as they opened without a reservation and were able to get an outdoor spot. The view is really nice, we could see one of the Kusama exhibits from where we sat outdoors, and they have umbrellas to block out the sun. The food itself was fine, really not bad considering this place is inside the garden. I got the chicken Cobb salad. It had a bit too much dressing, so would request a lighter amount of dressing to probably be equivalent to a medium amount in most shops. The dish itself was super filling, and I'm glad I didn't get one of their chicken sandwich because it is massive. It might put you in a food coma. I did try my boyfriend's burger, and it tasted good - medium rare and pretty thick, so would recommend this one as well. Seems like their menu changes seasonally, but the burger is always offered. Overall would recommend if you can get a seat and are hungry in the gardens. Come early or make a reservation though. read more

Service was fast and the waiter was calm enough to put up with my needy grandma. My only complaints are the overly salty fries and the $14 glass of wine. I didn't know what to expect from a restaurant inside the garden (I generally don't eat in these types of places), but this was a pleasant surprise. We got the iced tea (unsweetened) and lemonade to drink - I really enjoyed it because the flavors were more mild but still flavorful, but girlfriend thought the lemonade should be much more tart. I got the garden burger, which I didn't realize until after I got it that it was a VEGGIE burger (stupid me....). With that said, we thought it was the best veggie burger we've had - nicely seasoned although it did take some getting used to the veggie chunks in the burger (carrots, edamame, etc.). Came with a side salad, that was nicely dressed (I generally hate dressing, but this was mild enough that I enjoyed it - some sort of balsamic vinagrette?). Girlfriend got the chicken breast, which was juicy with crispy skins. The accompaniments like the sweet potato puree worked well with the dish. The food was mediocre at best, the squash appetizer was extremely dry, the prawns were just ok. The only really good thing were the zucchini chips. Wonderful food. My girls are foodies and they ate all the grown up food we ordered and shared as a family. I was even asked to make the black rice tower at home . Not cheap but nothing in NY is cheap and we ate pretty expensive meals. This was one of the best 3 restaurants we got around to in a week vacation of eating out twice a day. Clean bathrooms. I know it's sounds like I'm a germaphob but NY bathrooms are just disgusting! Hope as you use them, you don't get a horrible something. This place had wonderful and helpful waiters. Well dressed, well spoken. Just seemed a bit timid from the clientele or to make a mistake in a notable way. Managment should ease them a bit since you can feel their fear to mess up and the stuffiness of the place. We wore casual and it was just fine. They have the nicest outdoor seating. I highly recommend that on a Rainy day. We were FREEZING inside due to ac turned down so low on a not so hot day. Amateur hour. We three each ordered one dish, but because mine was a appetizer it came first. I sat there very slowly eating it, but it was a full twenty minutes before the other two "mains" came. About fifteen minutes after that the waiter came and said "I forgot to bring you [my wife] the ginger ale you ordered," My dish was Santorini prawns, which came without a dish for the shells (it appeared with the mains), and without a soup spoon for what is essentially a seafood chowder. But my biggest objection is that the texture of the prawns was abominable, as though it had been refrozen and then rethawed. Never again. I'd rather forage for food in the Botanical Garden woods before I go back to this joint. read more

Hudson Burger- The burger was absolutely amazing. It was cooked to the correct temperature that I asked for (medium rare). The flavor was on point! It had pieces of applewood smoked bacon in the some type of onion jam. I've never even heard of that but it was divine, I devoured that burger. Highly recommend. read more

We came for Chihuly and walked away with a wonderful memory of a great day yesterday. I had read the reviews and decided the Hudson Garden Grill would be a better way to have lunch then the Pine. I was extremely happy I went with a reservation. We were seated very quickly and we even got to sit on the patio with a beautiful view of the gardens. I was pleasantly surprised when they had a children's menu (that wasn't posted on-line) and just how peaceful it was enjoying a meal with my daughter in this sanctuary. She had pasta and I had the cheese plate with a side of malt vinegar fries. The pasta portion was great for kids (but their sauce is pretty dance- actually orange so she was fine with it plain.) The cheese plate allowed me to be fancy! I munched on slices pear, strawberries, raspberries, apple along with two types of bread. It was a great choice. But, the malt vinegar fries were delicious! The did not need any ketchup. Soft, with a little crunch and salty enough! YUM! My only issues was the $6 price tag for a kids sized cup of lemonade. Stick to water parents! To help sway you with going to the Hudson- I walked into the Pine Cafe at 2pm and it was pandemonium! I was so glad that we had a nice, calm meal in a beautiful place! I was very lucky to get a table on a weekend for lunch. Even we dined indoor, it was spacious and the decor was beautiful and elegant! We ordered the Hudson Burger and the Crispy Chicken Sandwich (which is actually more like a burger than a sandwich). Although the chicken wasn't marinated beforehand, it was still flavorful because of the aioli and bacon jam. The fries were crispy too. This was my first time here. In fact, this was also the first time for my party of 11 to also eat here. We had a late lunch reservation. When we arrived around 1pm we had to divide up into two adjacent tables, because the place was so busy. We were seated at one large table for 7 of us, with a second adjacent table for 4 of us. We were happy to hear that this is farm to table. I enjoyed my two fresh red pomegranate seed margaritas to start. Ricardo noticed I was using my plastic straw to remove and eat my fresh pomegranate seeds. Ricardo then gave me a spoon so I could more easily eat the pomegranate seeds from my two cocktails. I enjoyed my shrimp and grits entrée. Ricardo was very knowledgeable, friendly and expeditious. The cost for our two tables was $273 less gratuities. We were all pleased with our lunch and will likely return during next year's holiday season. read more

One of the absolute worst dining experiences in our lives. The food, when you do get it, is great. However, the entire wait staff from the hostess to the waiters and support staff are absolutely atrocious. Time to get water: 10 minutes; Time to get drink order: 20 minutes. Time for food after order: 97 minutes (and they brought our appetizers after our meals). At one point the hostess started screaming at an older guest. The New York Botanical Gardens are our oasis, and this restaurant is supposed to mirror the tranquil and pristine settings of it's surroundings. It is the absolute opposite and will leave you anxious and frustrated. Short recommendation: fire everyone except the kitchen staff; hire a real restaurant manager to turn this place around without delay. P.S. I was so impressed the first time I ate at the Hudson Garden Grill that I meant to write an immediate review. But a really bad fall led to months of down time and the memories slipped away. This time, not so!! When my son's wife told me we would be having brunch at the restaurant in the New York Botanical Gardens I thought "Ho, Hum....". This would be overpriced cardboard food aimed at quelling the hunger of those trapped in an entertainment venue. Our experience was at the opposite end of the spectrum. Walk in to a fine dining atmosphere with a gorgeous full glass wall view of the gardens. Every server appears to have interviewed for their personality and ability to cater to the individual needs of each dining group. Understanding that many Botanical Gardens visitors bring young children, the restaurant is child friendly,. Atop the tablecloth is paper covering the table. The server immediately furnishes crayons for the little one. And the yummy children's menu items are brought first, to quell the hunger of those less willing to wait. The menu choices are unique creations. It was almost impossible to narrow down. After much agony I choice the Crispy Kale Salad with Brussels Sprouts Shavings & Anchovy Beignets. The scrumptious salad was followed by Pumpkin Ravioli. The salad is hard to describe. The crispy Kale was served as a shell encasing the salad, which was either ground or chopped into a mix that was compact & tasty. The anchovy beignets rested aside the corners of the kale shell. It was incredibly refreshing. The Pumpkin Ravioli was simply perfect. I'm not certain I've ever tasted such delight. Let's not forget the amazing drink suggested by the server: Limeade with a splash of club soda and freshly crushed cucumber slices and mint. I had two. I could have stayed and had more. Actually all afternoon long.... The friendly server, noting my fascination with the refreshing drink, gave me all the details on preparation. If going at a busy time I would suggest reservations. The staff is very happy to hold your table, should you encounter traffic in route. Call and let them know. Brunch at the Hudson Garden Grill is definitely worth a visit, even if you don't plan a New York Botanical Gardens experience. Food, service and the view is superb. read more

Since their renovation, this place is not only attractive, but with better food as well. This restaurant also created a counter sitting area to eat in if you are alone. They serve good food. We like their seafood sampler. Today, we had their chopped salad with fried wonton strips on top. We also had the crab cake made with lumps of cat meat and avocado around. They also have creamy clam chowder. I like their non/alcoholic beverages. Like the club soda or seltzer with strawberry or peach and mint. Nice decor, good food, and service. read more

I've had Hudson Garden Grill on my To-Do List since the last time I was here in December. Not difficult to locate, Hudson Garden Grill is past the Haupt Conservatory. Brick exterior, offsets the beautiful and graceful landscape around. The space is airy, with simple touches, of white antiqued wood slab walls, giving off a neutral tone to show off Hudson's tasteful design with metal ceiling lamps, adding a nice touch. All these touches in my opinion, shows a country-elegant feel. The mega hit in Hudson Garden Grill, for me, has to be their arch windows that add a soft feel and gives you a gorgeous view of the garden. Hudson Garden Grill only use, Hudson Valley's local ingredients adding a sophisticated menu offering classic dishes such as, salads, great quality pasta and fish dishes- with a totally, unique spin. Hudson, is not for the 20-something hipster; if you fall in that bracket, please...scratch that thought and move on, because this isn't the place for you. But, on a more positive note, Hudson Garden Grill is elegantly polished. Menu? Without a doubt, the chef, truly poured his/her heart out with every meal adding a lot of finesse. read more

The Hudson Garden Grill has recently opened on the grounds of NY Botanical Gardens and its now NYBG's first full service restaurant. They have created a beautiful space partly from reclaimed wood from trees that fell in NYBG due to "Superstorm Sandy" to make this a bright, inviting dining area that will compliment your visit to the NYBG perfectly. For English visitors, the space reminds me of the Orangery on the grounds of Kensington Palace, perhaps a bit smaller in scale. Its hours mirrors the NYBG (10am to 6pm), but during the summer there are special events that allow the restaurant to be opened later - we were able to dine here during one of those (Frida Kahlo/Jenny Holzer event). From the website you can also make this a dining destination during weekdays along with 2 hours free parking. Primarily this is a lunch/early dinner restaurant and I think the prices reflect that (I always find it a little funny in certain restaurants you pay less for the same meal for lunch as opposed to dinner service, but I digress). I thought the prices were good for the quality of the food along with the beautiful presentation. The food is an interesting and innovative mix of updated classics and soon to be classics. A stellar stand out is the Lobster Club with avocado, bacon, heirloom tomatoes, bib lettuce dressed with a jalapeno and fish roe laced mayo. This sandwich hits all the right notes being well balanced and complemented by a sweet, buttery brioche roll. I enjoyed the Rigatoni with sausage, clams and a Calabrian chile sauce which made for a tasty pasta dish with just enough heat. I did notice on their website this is usually served topped with grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese, which I must admit would have made this dish complete but was omitted on mine. As you can read not everything was perfect - the service was a bit slow and our server was very congenial, but admitted that the staff and kitchen were struggling with 2 events besides the usual dinner service. So there are some kinks to be worked out, but I didn't hold it against them too much - only removing a star from my review of what is an excellent dining establishment. read more

Burger was OK french fries was super salty impossible to eat, Soaked in oily and soggy:( Salad was Looking amazing but taste terrible. It was only two or 3 Arugula leaves The rest was cheap Chinese cabbage. And 2-3 pieces of mandarins. A big amount of vinegar and sugar. Very disappointing. What a beautiful restaurant. It is nestled in the elegant botantical gardens. The restaurant has high ceilings and the ambiance is awesome. Rhe service is a little slow but enjoy the place while you wait. There is so much natural light that energizes the place. I loved the burger and fries. So much flavor and the fries were crisp. It is well made and really hits the spot. My friend got one of the salads and it looked awesome. I would come back here in a second. I might bring my Mom here to impress her.
