Food is great. Always is. Service on the other hand... the waitress/hostess we had was awful. When we first entered, she stood up from a booth, walked into the kitchen and came out 2 mins later to seat us. She gave my spouse his soda with cream cheese in the cup. She sat in a booth with somebody else not working, and when we asked for more beef at the bar she asked somebody else to do it, who then asked one of the cooks to do it. When we went up to our second plate, she didn't take any of our plates, the guy she was sitting with did. When my spouse got a refill she brought a whole new cup but didn't take the empty one. Then went down the whole line of people in booths asking if it was cash or card. A couple sitting near us had sweet tea and she told them it was too much to make more sweet tea this late into the night but they could get something else. It was 730. A group of college boys came in and she told them they got water, and then proceeded to ask them cash or card as they stood up to get their first plate. Offered a 10% discount then just didn't give it to us. When the booths on one side filled up she moved to another booth on the other side. The whole food bar was a mess and sticky, it was shrimp night and no shrimp was up there. She filled no sauces, no food, nothing. We felt bad asking because one of the cooks was coming out to do it. We haven't been here for a while, but decided to give it another try. One thing that I found to be a bit confusing, until I figured it out, is the location of all of the prepared sauces. You will have to go to both sides of the sauce table to find the cards identifying all of the sauces. On each of the other tables of the buffet, you will find all of the cards identifying everything on the table on both sides of the table, so you need to be on only one side of the table. But the sauce table is an exception to the rule. Only half of the prepared sauces on the table are identified on each side of the table, so you will have to look on both sides of the table to find out about all of the available sauces. I did not recognize that fact until after I had finished my dinner and returned to the sauce table to look at it again. The sauce that I had wanted, but could not find, was identified only on the other side of the table. Oh well, next time I will know. The dinner price is higher than the lunch price, with the transition taking place at 4 pm. The reason is that the dinner buffet includes some seafood items not on the buffet for lunch, and the dinner price includes a soup or salad. Since there is plenty on the buffet table for dinner, I request that the dinner side salad be packed to go for my lunch the next day. read more

i came with my bf and his friend and they were messing around and the lady at the front said "damn that as* that fat nah i'm kidding" next we got our food and my noodles we're not even cooked with the sauce. next we sit down and we ordered 1 water 1 coke 1 dr.pepper we got all water no silverware. my friend had to go to the kitchen after we waited 10 minutes for them to bring the silverware the right drinks and our rice and no one came until we went in the back to go get someone ourselves. and the girls were just in the back on their phones. at the end we weren't going to pay all together and the lady brought the bill and said here ya go and then walked away and i said we aren't together and she kept walking. also is there no dress code there? they are allowed to pajamas? will never be returning. honestly rate this place 0/5 read more

I have to comment on the cleanliness of this restaurant. Went into the bathroom on arriving here which was at 11:15 am. Bathroom was in a complete disarray...paper towels were out, trash was overflowing with paper towels onto floor, toilet paper was strewn all over the floor and stuck to toilets. Obviously never cleaned from the night before. Pretty disgusting. The food was good, but it's hard to screw up stir fry that's cooked in front of you. read more

A good experience but seemed understaffed. The poor waitress seemed like she was having a very hard time keeping up. A few customer seemed to be a little upset. It was lunch and I'm sure time was an issue for some customers. Service is usually a little slow. The amount you can eat, the different recipes you can make, NOOODLES, MEAT, AND THE VARIETY OF VEGGIES, and the different SAUCES, I just can't have enough of it! First timers of course your dish will come out weird because you didn't put enough sauce in or your combo is weird, but get the hang of it and you'll instantly fall in love! ~$13 for lunch ~$16 for dinner ( comes with unlimited soup or salad ) Rice is unlimited Take two bowls when you go up there. One bowl isn't big enough to fit all the ingredients in. Put at least 6 ladles. Make sure to add in oil so the sauce doesn't get burned up and making the dish dry. It's very dangerous that this restaurant opened up within walking distance from my house. No good can come of this situation! This place opened up recently and it wasn't until a friend went and raved about it that I figured it was time to finally go. I had been to numerous Mongolian grill restaurants before and some I liked, some not so much. So my friend and I ventured into Hu Hot on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I was instantly impressed. First off, this restaurant is sparking clean. Gleaming clean. It was decorated in traditional Mongolian decor plus Asian fusion which gave it a nice touch. It was very comfy and cozy, too. Plenty of space without losing ambiance. The server was very friendly and helpful. She explained the process to us and even described the various sauces. She was friendly without being cloying or intrusive. We got our bowls and off we went!! I think the thing that makes a Mongolian grill good or bad has to do with the sauces and the ingredients offered. The ingredients at Hu Hot were fresh and delicious. My bowl was teaming with yummy vegetables and fresh meat. The sauces were what I loved the best, though. I loaded up with all sorts of various sauces. The combination I created was the absolute best! The only thing I would add is an egg. I have always enjoyed the Mongolian grills that let you add an egg to your dish. One particular thing I liked was you can look into the coolers. The coolers face the assembly line and have clear glass doors. You can see all the ingredients individually portioned in clearly labeled containers. Very fresh and wholesome and waiting to jump into your Mongolian bowl! This is All-You-Can-Eat but I did not go back for seconds. I wanted to relish my dish and let it linger. It was delightful and I did not feel guilty in the least. I thought the price was about right for All-You-Can-Eat. It was pricey enough that I cannot make it a habit but I sure enjoyed this treat. I love Huhot! Trying to eat healthier and love their vegetable and meat selections! Baby corn, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrokms, onions, celery, peppers and more. Fro meat, spicy or mild sausage, a white fish, imitation crab, pork, beef and chicken. As well, they have Trent meatballs (did not care for those). A variety of sauces and oils to flavor the dish and they all had labels to describe the taste and slickness. After they cook your creation, they have red pepper flakes, coconut, peanuts, wonton noodles and sesame seeds for toppings. Rice is served at the table and I forgot to mention the noodles you can add to your dish at the food bar because we do low carb. My only complaint is that the peanut sauce seemed a little less flavorful than I remembered...but other than that, you can only blame yourself if you don't like your meal. Just opened next to Planet Fitness on Iowa, Lawrence finally has a Mongolian barbecue, but HuHot Is HoHum With Nary A "Crab" In Sight! About $10 for lunch and $15 for dinner, it's "all you can eat" which should go over well with KU students or anybody else for that matter. The place is big, but the bowls you put your meat, noodles, veggies and sauce in are very small and my main complaint. My recommendation, take two bowls, one for meat and one for noodles and veggies, that way you get a full plate of food rather than a half. We tried A Taste of the Bounty appetizer ($9.99), with three each crispy egg rolls, Asian potstickers and krab rangoons, whatever the hell they are, accompanied by a rather boring sweet and sour dipping sauce. The egg rolls and potstickers were rather flavorless. The "krab" (note the spelling folks because there ain't a microgram of "crab" in these puppies) rangoons taste only of Philadelphia cream cheese in the center, again boring, bland and blah. Do not waste your money on any of the appetizers. They have a nice variety of traditional meats (beef, chicken, pork) for the Mongolian Barbecue, adding some novelty with meatballs and sliced sausage, mild and hot. The veggie selection is somewhat inadequate with the basics that I like (mushrooms, onion, cabbage, and bell peppers), but not much else other than carrots and a few others. The food is decent, but not anywhere near the best Mongolian barbecue I have had and I have had it many times for less than $15. However, as Bob Barker would say, "The Price is Right", so sachet your little behind over to HuHot and try some of their mediocre Mongolian, then to Planet Fitness to work off some of them Krab Rangoons. The pricing is different on the weekend, but even at that lunch is $12 for all you care to eat. Great value. The sauces are really good and the buffet has a great selection of things to make a good meal. Downsides: the pre-made sauces can have a LOT of sugar (if you follow the guidelines of 5-6 ladles of sauce). I wish they would put soy on the buffet and a few sugar-free recipes up for options for folks that don't want (or, can't have) the pre-made sauces because of concerns about sugar. read more

I'll start this by saying I f'n LOVE this place. Seriously. LOVE it. Like stalker-love it. If you've never been, not only is the value great, but it's great food with nutrition-conscious options. HuHot is set up like a buffet, except all food choices are frozen until they hit the grill. Nutrition info is posted over all options, and the sections are broken up into proteins, veggies/toppings, and sauces/oils. Grab a bowl, overfill it, and let the grill maestros create your magic. It's all self-serve except the cook, which happens right in front of you. Some specifics: Protein choices will vary from time to time, specifically with seafood choices. Staples include chicken, beef, pork, sausage, and usually crab. They'll have shrimp from time to time, and other shellfish. Next is the noodle selection. They generally have three types of noodles, and the Pad Thai is among the best on earth. Cooked up it's the perfect base for the meal. Veggies include carrots, broccoli, mini-corn, spinach, green beans, sprouts, and a plethora of other choices. Also have items like tofu for vegetarian/vegan. The best part is the sauces and oils. Too many to list here, but some go-to choices for me are black thai peanut, curry, and Burn-your-village BBQ. Oils have a wide range too, with spicy (like the chili oil) and my foundation, sesame oil. There are recommended recipes above the food choices, and how to configure a bowl, but you can experiment to no end here. I've found some great combos over the years and it's always good, if not amazing. If you've been to BD's, I'd take this place over that one ANY day. The sauces and oils are next level. I couldn't be happier that there are two now within 20 mins of us, and anytime we need a solid meal with options we choose HuHot. The best part is you can make unlimited trips through the lines for one price--VALLLLUUUEEEE!!! Best I've done is two and a half plates...and while it was punishment after it was soooooo worth it. Dam right I'd do it again. They also have a rewards program...and it's good and bad for us. I'm a vegetarian and my tofu was practically raw still and after my boyfriends first plate that included chicken, he felt apprehensive about getting any more potentially undercooked meat. Hands down the WORST food I've had in Lawrence. And I've had some pretty awful food here. If you're a vegetarian, you'll probably love it. But if you're a carnivore, you just might become a vegan after visiting here. The buffet meat is frozen solid. I made 4 trips to the grill with 2 bowls each time. I tried the beef, chicken, shrimp and pork separately, and cooked different ways; medium and well done. No matter how I asked them to cook it, it still came out dry and rubbery. And the various sauces I chose made no difference at all. I went with a male friend who will practically eat and like anything, but even he said he'd never go back. So, if he says it's bad, it's awful. Nice staff, though. - Dear, HuHot. If you're reading this, it would be a good idea to Marinate Your Meat, or at least give it a good brine. The worst of the Hu Hot restaurants we have been too. Food always comes off the grill dry. We went from 6 laddles to 10 and still comes dry. I have been to approx. 6 different Hu Hot's and this is the worse. Staff has nose in the air bad attitude. Need to shut this one down. Terrible staff. read more
