This little shop is a block away from our hotel so we have stopped in a couple of times so far. It has a little bit of everything...deli, coffee, ice cream, touristy nick knacks. Service was good. Most of the workers are college students from Cal Poly and friendly. A friend and I stopped in for a mocha in the morning. It was good and chocolately and hot. When we stopped in again in the afternoon, the lady at the counter remembered us and welcomed back. We ordered ice cream cones. The sea salt caramel was creamy and seemed to be made using real vanilla beans as it had the little flakes in it. There were tables inside as well as out. Since it was a warm day we opted to enjoy the sun and listen to the sounds of the ocean that is right across the street. The shop had the usual touristy items such as shirts and sign as well as kitchen ware. We ended up buying some of the nick knacks as they had some items I had never seen before. In Avila staying at the Avila Lighthouse Suites , wanting a after dinner ice cream. Walked by Hula Hut at 8:15pm and it was closed. Yelp says 45 min till close. We see 2 girls , one talking and the other moping the floor,but the doors are closed. I feel like if your going to close at 8:00 or so , Post that stuff on Yelp. If you need to leave early to go , Post your closing time on Yelp. Quit the crap about Yelp indicating that your still open till 9:00. read more

Came here for a little treat after the nice dinner. My wife and I picked this place over there others because of the name (go figure). The place was crowded which I viewed as a good sign. They have a large selection of goodies but we went straight for the ice cream. I had carmel and that was REALLY good however my wife had vanilla and when I had a taste of hers I couldn't even tell it was vanilla... Service... not as bad as other reviews. I had a bad experience at this store (Hula Hut) in Avila Beach yesterday when we dropped in to get ice cream. We heeded the sign on the door to wear masks. The three young people in front of us were NOT wearing masks. I pointed it out to the owner behind the counter. His hostile response was "I'm not the mask police! I'm not going to enforce it. If you don't like it you can leave!". So we did. On the way out I pointed to the sign on the door that states masks must be worn upon entering the store, His rude response was to wave and shout "Have a good day!". Bottom-line: he asked two people wearing masks to leave the store rather than three that weren't. Hope the extra ice cream sale was worth it to him! read more

I had the breakfast croissant with bacon egg n cheese with avocado and country potatoes. It was yummy! The croissant was light and fluffy the bacon was crispy and egg done right. But for THIS trip, one did not worry about gifts...one concentrated on TREATS. And good GAWD, Miss Maud, there were treats aplenty...mainly ICE CREAM. I have to correct Mr. Eddie Murphy: the "ice cream man is comin'?' Uh-uhnh, baby, the ice cream man is HERE. With free samples, no less. And you know you are in serious jeopardy when they have a flavor called 'Motor Oil." Which is actually misleading: it SHOULD be called "Death-By-DEATH-By-Chocolate." Which of course I did a double scoop of. But not without taking an entire pound of that ridiculously good sugar-free chocolate candy back with me as well. Oy, vey. A good place for one with a sweet tooth like mine this is NOT. (THAT'S what this place does...has you speaking like Master Yoda, it will!) Ordered the hot chocolate with whipped cream on a cold morning. Delicious! Staff was friendly and helpful. The store also has cute home decor items including mugs, candles, and wood decor items, etc. I had a great time browsing the selection while enjoying my drink. After a nice meal at the Customs House I needed something sweet as I walked along the boardwalk so I dropped into this Ice Cream Parlor/Candy Store. Cute when you enter, homey, old-fashioned feel. BUT, that is where the old fashioned came to an end. The four girls behind the counter glanced my way but were too busy with the more important things in life than Customer Service to ever even greet me. I've been dying to try Doc Burnstein's ice cream and I was so happy to come across this place during a random Avila trip. I ordered the Merlot Raspberry Truffle and it was so good!! You could see and taste the flavors as the ice cream just melts in your mouth. My friend got the Pistachio flavor and that was really good as well as it came with bits of pistachios. This place is a sweet little place! Although one out of two bathrooms was up and running and the ice cream scoops being a little pricy, IT WAS WAY WAY WAY WORTH IT! My son loved their chocolate, pistachio, and strawberry flavors in the waffle cone while I ordered a cake cone with the BEST ICE CREAM FLAVOR IN THE WORLD, Chocolate Raspberry Merlot, A-MAZING. I also got to try their Coconut, Tiger Bark, and Butterfinger fudge that a woman comes in and makes FRESH every Tuesday, LIKE WOW! I came in ready to loathe Hula Hut and ended up reasonably impressed. This is a solid affordable lunch option in Avila, because there's nowhere else to go unless you want a calorie bomb at Custom House or you're willing to pay for a more elegant, foodie-oriented meal at Ocean Grill. It's just the basics--turkey or chicken sandwich and wrap, egg and tuna salad sammies, tacos--delivered without flair, but still reasonably good. It's like a suburban SLO county mom made you lunch. Nothing groundbreaking, but nothing offensive, and the price is right at between $7 and $10 for everything on the menu. Major bonus = DOC BERNSTEIN ICE CREAM in the case! I ordered a Italian sandwich that had pepperoni and salami, and it did have pepperoni and salami in it just 2 pieces each in the sandwich. I don;t really think that's what this places is unfortunately. In fact, I have no idea what it is. The service was terrible. The guy taking out order actually answered a personal cell phone call in the middle of our order and didn't even apologize! We ordered the chicken tacos and a strawberry mango smoothing. I think this place suffers from an identity problem more than anything else. From a tourist standpoint, I never really like to see an eatery, dessert shop, candy store and sundries store all piled into one... because that usually means that they don't do any of the above well. In this case, the place turns out some nice things, and for prices that aren't too bad. While I would have had to wait 45 minutes to get into the Custom House for a sit down meal, I was able to walk in here, get a couple of salads for a reasonable price, and have a nice quiet dinner. not necessarily white napkin, but no worse than your otherwise run-of-the-mill applebees or TGIF when it came to prices and quality. A place like this could very well be a staple of hanging out at Avila Beach. read more

I've recently become a fan of the Bob Jones trail because my lazy butt can be outdoors and not exert too much energy. So on one of those trips we stopped at the Hula Hut for some ice cream. All those calories I burned by my light walking needed to be replenished, stat! I'm apologizing in advance for this... THEY LET YOU SPLIT SCOOPS! And for this indecisive b-i-n-g-o, well, its a match made in ice cream heaven. I got the oil something or the other and birthday cake. I can't believe I don't remember the name of the flavor I liked the most, but when and if you see it, you'll know. Its also one of the more popular ones. So split scoops, bomb ice cream and wonderful service equals A+ in my book. I've never had the food, so I feel I can't give it five stars just yet.. hopefully soon! read more

Hula Hut is disguised as a tourist trap, but don't walk on by! Their local-made, uniquely flavored sweets are the perfect treat to bring home from vacation. Try their jelly donut or carrot cake fudge! Or, if fudge isn't your thing, there's also ice cream - really, really good ice cream. I went for a scoop of their honey almond, which was divine on so many levels. I also tried their Doc's Java, and let me tell you, this is no bubble-blowing baby ice cream. The coffee flavor is so strong that you could probably stand a spoon in it even if it were completely melted. Yum yum! On top of that, the staff is friendly. Always a great cherry on top. read more
