The staff is surprisingly kid friendly considering how many delicate cute gift items they have displayed everywhere. We enjoy sitting on the couches while indulging on the rich creamy ice cream. read more

The owner treats his employees and customers rudely. Case in point, arrived at 11:32, looked at kids menu to order breakfast. He hollers breakfast finished at 11:30...the MENU states "served all day" under kids menu. When I queried, he sternly and loudly stated "it's a typo". Really basic little gift shop, fudge and ice cream shop on the main drag in Avila Beach. Pretty indifferent staff, funky smelling kitchen and packaged ice cream on stale waffle cones made this place a big meh for us. Had the chocolate, which was fine but pushed down into a big waffle cone so you had to eat the cone by itself (or break it off and throw it away) to get down to the ice cream. Sea salt caramel fudge was a bit grainy and must be bad for a kid to abandon after a couple of bites. Great location, but so many misses at this place make it hard to recommend. read more

The shop itself is very cute with lots of overpriced but aesthetically pleasing things for your home or garden. I ordered a couple of boba drinks which were terrible. They were both watered down and flavorless; to the point that we could not drink them. A total waste of money. I also picked up a few snacks and energy drinks, sparkling waters, etc. I expected to pay a lot more which is no biggie when you buy these things at a place where tourists pass through. The biggest problem to me was the customer service or the lack thereof. A young man who was working the front was very chatty and cordial with a guest before me. He greeted her with eye contact and a smile. He mentioned that he was from Bakersfield and attending Cal Poly, etc. He asked if she wanted her receipt, made more small talk, and wished her a great day. He did not use any of these exemplary customer service skills on me whatsoever. He literally was a different person when he took my order and checked me out. I will not be back. read more

I witnessed the owner and one of his staff being extremely rude to some customers today who were requesting their incorrect drink orders to be remade. Finally after arguing and being rude he said he would remake the drink. Everyone continued eating their breakfast and after 15 20 minutes the one gal went back up asking for the drink. The worker was very rude and said she would have to wait. They obviously were just about done eating and wanted their drink. The owner finally said I will make it now. The whole thing was uncomfortable and made our breakfast experience unpleasant. We will not be going back. There was no need for the rudeness to those paying customers. read more

Outside very nice and cute, the only place with Breakfast early morning on the beach. Me and my husband was in town for business and stop to grab a bite to eat and see the beach before work. The coffee was the only thing good. It was not that crowded. It took a while for are food and it was not cooked all the way and you can tell it had been frozen. So unprofessional!!! Came in for breakfast with my family on a Monday morning. The older gentleman behind the counter was EXTREMELY rude and seemed bothered that we were there. Not to mention it appeared to be dead, so the confusion on why this annoyed him so much was beyond me. As the other half of my group walked outside he started verbally cussing and talking trash about them to another employee, not realizing I was still standing on the other side of the counter making my coffee. The older man who works here is unnecessarily rude. I won't tolerate crummy service or grouchy attitudes. He made a comment about me wearing a mask, I'm not sure why he cares whether I wear a mask or not - doesn't impact his business one bit. What does impact his business is me not returning. Reading my review from 8 years ago and shaking my head. Hula Hut is a charming place sitting on the corner of one of the most beautiful beach towns anywhere. The owner, Bill, introduced himself and made us feel welcome during our recent visit. Terrific selection of food, ice cream and souvenirs. The breakfast burrito is excellent as is most of the food selections. I'm not sure of the brand of coffee they brew but it's one of the better cups I've had. I got some $4 Doc Burnstein's ice cream here. Since I've had lots of quality ice cream from different places in California, I thought that the taste of this ice cream was just alright. It was pretty good, suitable for the hot weather outside, but it doesn't make this place a destination in Avila Beach. Avila Beach itself is a pretty nice place to visit. I guess if I really did want some ice cream and was walking around, I'd come here. There was another place down the street that sold ice cream but I didn't try that one. We came upon this place by accident as we were in Avila to catch the sunset. We stopped by for their crushed pennies which happened to be "housed" in a tiki statue which we thought was creative and the setup inside seemed cute. One thing I found odd was how the cashiers worked all areas so they tend to go from one area to another in between customers which makes you feel a little awkward to have them walk away without saying anything after they serve the customer before you. The staff wasn't rude or anything but it might've been nice to have them acknowledge that they will be with you next instead of just walking away. We did come back in after the sunset as I saw that they were serving Doc Burnstein ice cream and I have been meaning to try it since last year so we came in for a scoop of banana peanut butter and honey almond and had dessert before dinner. read more

Decided to drive over from Pismo for a treat tonight, and chose this place as they advertised online to close at 8pm. We arrived at 7:20 and half our party went in to order and the other half stayed out to hold the dogs. Then we switched at 7:40, and walked inside to order/look around and we're pleasantly greeted. At 7:47, we took a few items and went to the counter to check out and were immediately told they closed. I wish we had check their reviews initially seeing as this is a common issue. Was on Avila Beach and couldn't decide where to eat as I wanted fish but nothing fried or heavy. Decided to get a fish sandwich from Hula Hut after being enticed by the long line waiting for ice cream. The ice cream was typical seaside fare but the sandwich was honestly everything I wanted (crispy sourdough, seasoned high quality tilapia, fresh lettuce and tomato with a light tartare sauce). The potato salad was an unexpected delight too, nice pickles and egg, felt like someone's mom made it with love. For $11 this meal was a steal and it came with a piece of fruit as a palate cleanser. This little shop is a block away from our hotel so we have stopped in a couple of times so far. It has a little bit of everything...deli, coffee, ice cream, touristy nick knacks. Service was good. Most of the workers are college students from Cal Poly and friendly. A friend and I stopped in for a mocha in the morning. It was good and chocolately and hot. When we stopped in again in the afternoon, the lady at the counter remembered us and welcomed back. We ordered ice cream cones. The sea salt caramel was creamy and seemed to be made using real vanilla beans as it had the little flakes in it. There were tables inside as well as out. Since it was a warm day we opted to enjoy the sun and listen to the sounds of the ocean that is right across the street. The shop had the usual touristy items such as shirts and sign as well as kitchen ware. We ended up buying some of the nick knacks as they had some items I had never seen before. Hula Hut is a mom and pop variety store. It has become the local coffee hangout spot in the mornings and weekends. They offer pastries, breakfast foods, dog treats, coffee, fudge, tea, bottled water and lots of whimsical kitsch decor, along with lotions and soaps, beach themed gifts, bracelets and a variety of ice cream scooped out of big tubs. Someone has a really funny sense of humor so I enjoy the curated selections of worded signs that's kind of popular with southerners or midwesterners, but it is not something I'd put in my home or decorate with, but I could see retirees eating this stuff up. Hula Hut is the perfect addition to the Avila Beach stores and restaurants - it's casual, fun, and generally a happy place (when the owner is in a pleasant and welcoming mood). read more
