The best BLTA sandwich I've ever had. Can't wait to go back for another! Not sure how something so simple could be so good. Bacon was perfection, sauce came from heaven. We visited for the first time with new ownership and renovations. It looks beautiful inside and cozy downstairs. The service was great. They have non alcoholic beverages, snacks and toiletries you may need. The menu is small but has everything you would want from lattes, açaí bowls, breakfast and lunch. 6 sandwiches cost $150!!! We used to love this place!! They had the best burgers and fish and chips, unfortunately under new owners they won't be offering anything but the current posted menu. Cashier said they won't be bringing anything back from the old menu stated it was, "too ordery" .... Whatever the heck that's supposed to translate too. Spend your $150 on a sit down restaurant, at least you get service. BLTA bread was so crusty and hard we had to peel half the bread off and basically ate bacon by hand and threw the slices tomato in the mouth. Had to box up our own to go order because the server couldn't figure out how to close the boxes. Place really went down hill.. won't be coming back. read more

Ordered a quick breakfast with my family here and discovered the bottom floor served açaí bowls. I wish there was some sort of signage explaining that the upstairs cafe and the downstairs cafe do not serve the same food because my first impression was that they were the same and we ordered from the menu upstairs. Then we went downstairs to sit down and eat only to discover that they served açaí bowls and if I knew that sooner I might've just had that instead! Years of coming to Avila beach for family vacations, so disappointing to walk into this market and see it is bare. Nothing on the shelves, can't even tell if there is food for sale or not up top. And down below where the amazing açaí bowls and market shopping used to be is bare tables and a sad looking counter with no acai flavors (acai only) and the most unwelcoming staff who seem annoyed that you've step foot inside- let alone approach the counter. When I asked for them to cut it in half(sharing with husband) the guys in back were grumpy.Cook said they had no plates either (sandwhich crammed in tiny plastic container) Sadly they don't carry my husband's Figueroa Danish Red anymore. Açaí Bowl really hit the spot. Tried a protein smoothie from there too, which I would rank the açaí bowl over it. The market has some really great options. My wife and I have gone there in the past about a year and a half ago we usually go sit on the beach in our chairs and then when we get hungry for lunch, we go to the market the sandwiches. I've always been wonderful to get a sandwich with homemade chips, we went back this Fourth of July weekend and we're very disappointed. Obviously they have a new owner which we found out. The sandwiches are much more expensive and everything's à la carte I was not happy, but I did eat the sandwich. Sorry that the old owners are gone. This little beach community always has a great field to it. I've been coming here since I was young and I'm 68 now there are some very nice shops along the way though they had a Fourth of July doggy parade, which was wonderful. We sat on the beach with our family that we used to sit on the beach years and years ago. We're all older now, but it all feels great. I hope the market improves. read more

They have awesome selection of snacks, candy, and coolers for reach-in drinks. The Avila burger is huge and loaded with delicious toppings. The fries are Crisp and hot. What the hell happened to this place? How disappointing... what happened to not only the toppings but the fresh toppings? I'm talking about the fresh cut strawberries and pineapple... What happened to the almond butter, gogi berries, cacao nibs, and the higher quality granola... not the baked quaker oats. The strawberries and pineapple looked like they were straight from a can. I have never been to an açai bowl place where the strawberries and pineapple came from a can. As a healthy option, typically acai bowls do not come with toppings from a can. Not to mention, the peanut butter being J.I.F or Skippy? Seriously? With all the options being slimmer and MUCH lower quality... how did the size small go from $9.00 unlimited toppings to $12.50 with 3 toppings only. Went to get chicken tenders and at checkout, girl with pink hair was sweet but the girl w light brown hair had a terrible attitude! If you're gonna work the cashier at least try to be friendly. Also plastic containers are terrible! For a beach front shop you would think they wouldn't contribute to the plastic problem. Tenders were so hot it MELTED through the plastic. Jamie W. and I spent our last morning on the Central Coast in the beachside of Avila. It wasn't nearly as crowded as Pismo Beach, and the more subdued vibe was a welcome change. Regardless, there were plenty of beachfront eateries open for business, and this one with the white shiplap just drew our attention. It was actually a large space with two floors (the basement houses a busy mini-market), but tables were communal and social distancing was particularly difficult as more people came streaming in. The Pacific waves were making us hungry for the $6 Bowl of Clam Chowder, thick and piping hot, which we ordered for both of us (photo: https://bit.ly/3kGvqLa). We needed to douse a lot of hot sauce to amp up the flavor. We also each went for the $13.50 Veggie Wrap, which was. decent enough with mixed greens, spinach, bell pepper, cucumber, carrot, avocado, and bacon bits wrapped in a spinach tortilla. For starters I showed up at 10am to order food, and the cook was not there yet. He got stuck in "traffic". So an hour late from traffic on a Thursday morning. Proceeded to buy some items, 2 triple A batteries ($7.00), 1/2 gallon of whole milk ($7.00), 1.5l Fiji waters ($6.00), half size can of Pringles ($6.00). Ordered a clam chowder and they sure gave a lot of clams which was great but the chowder was runny after a few minutes though. Also used the restroom there and it was extremely filthy and unsanitary. I don't think employees check or clean the bathrooms during the day. Also not sure if they get cleaned at all from the look of things. The sink has a film of dirt on it. There was blood droplets next to toilet and across the floor. They need to really hold a meeting or something on sanitation and hygiene for this restaurant! Ick! read more

The smash burger is not at all "smashed" in fact it brings me back to the middle school cafeteria where food was free, yet, UNFORTUNATELY, I ordered two patties, as these patties are traditionally thin. I thought "yeah smash burger, haven't had one in a while". Yet was deeply disappointed in the end and only ate about half for the bare nutrients needed for lunch. On top of that I paid 20$. This two level marvel carries something for all. Shall we explore what a two level mercantile offers. In the basement beside the bathroom is a little shop that offers a little bit of this what's and nots. Those famous fruit açaí bowls can be had here. Pick what adventure that you would like to take your senses on. The directions are endless. Remember this is Cali. Dreams are made here. The fruit bowls became popular here, they are delicious here. All made fresh and in house. The fruit on top is layered in whatever fashion that you order it in. As I pen this a bowl with fruit here is worth the drive out alone from Las Vegas. For those that need a beer or a glass of wine the kitchen offers several IP's on tap to satisfy that five o clock somewhere call. Moving along to grocery. This is a local type shop where buying local is truly supported by the residents of Avila Beach. The voice of the people exists in what they carry and don't carry in the store. This is not a Whole Foods, a Vons, or Kroger. The flavor here is small and on the go. Lots of fruits and veggies from local growers. The selections of cheese, wine, bread, olives are epic. A lot of pantry products here are only available in this area. It's worth a look. Specialty items can be found here to put in your pantry. The area is dog friendly. If your little pup big or small knows how to play out side then bring puppy along. Always ask to pet someone's furry baby. We had Sugbaby, our fourteen year old put/beagle mix here. Many puppies are humans do wave and talk among one another. Let the animals have their conversations as you gather at the Beer Bar. Come and try the Poke Bowl offerings. Need a slice of Avocado Toast and a delicious beer. Sit for a while and catch the game. Smiles at every turn. Never in all the places have I been, has the authenticity of the people been so happy and kind. There is so much to smile at here. The ocean washes over your feet day after day. Even when it's cloudy the smiles of the residents penetrate that gloom and replace it with warmth. Need something. Looking for something, ask. Wander around and enjoy the sights of the store. The floor is made of real wood, as you shop the connection to the earth can be felt through your flip flops. The smells of the ocean are at every turn. How I long to be here again? Let's meet and have that beer? We can have that glass of wine while the moon rises over the ocean on the Avila Pier. From light eats to deep down deliciousness bring that appetite on over. As you shop the store for groceries move to the beat of your tunes in your ear. The ocean waves are your sound track to sheer bliss and joy. While touring around my favorite coast of California, we decided to check out Avila Beach. After walking around for a bit, we got a lil hungry and found this cute place to dine. The beauty of this business is that it is both a restaurant and a market. The choices on the menu were vast but I decided on a Cobb Salad, a cup of Clam Chowder and a smoothie. Everything was very good and of course you can never beat the fresh California produce. The market downstairs had a variety of grocery items including a nice selection of wine. Such a beautiful town and on the ocean. Doesn't get any better! read more

[Out-of-Towner Review] If Yelp was popular when I was a regular here, this would have FIVE stars. It's been a 'few' years since I've been back to SLO, but any time I come back, I make sure the first beach I visit is Avila. And of course, I have an action plan - grab a sandwich at Avila Market and relax at the beach just across the street. Well, to my surprise I couldn't order a sandwich how I wanted it. Don't get me wrong, I can ask for a menu item to be altered to my liking, but they definitely changed/updated the set-up and menu. It was a culture shock for me! Okay, so I'm not that bitter about not being able to order a turkey sandwich how I want it. I get it, they are doing what they need to as a business. However, my sandwich was sub-par AND they left the A out of my BLAT. I was so annoyed, because I was so hungry, waited over 30 minutes, and was sitting on the beach ready to enjoy my lunch. Only to open the box to the most lackluster BLT one has ever seen. My iceberg lettuce was emaciated and my tomato was meekly red. The bacon was decent in quantity and flavor, and the bread was nothing to write home about. I will give them kudos for their $6 to go cider (or beer). My pineapple ACE cider was huge and delicious for the price. Sure, not supposed to drink on the beach, so don't do that ;) Okay, we waited a long time. So did everyone else there. It was LDW on a beach, I get it. But the chaos of the way orders are released, including putting out mimosa's where the food went, was really confusing. We were the only people who had ordered and waited around 20 minutes for 3 chicken tenders. After getting our order, we wanted some ketchup for our tenders... also out!!!
