I first tried this coffee shop on the 4th of July. Even though it was very busy, I received excellent service and my coffee was so good I had been thinking about it and wanting to go back, ever since. Fast forward to yesterday, I finally had the chance to return. I did Bob Jones trail and all I could think about was how good my coffee was going to be once I reached the shop! This visit was not as busy and I received very lousy service from the young man at the register with the long straight hair and makeup who took my order. I was a little confused about my order and I think it irritated him. Only because, I ordered the exact same drink as last time and he asked me several questions about what I wanted added to it, that I wasn't asked before. So, I was a little confused. But shouldn't have been enough to irritate him as much as it did and he rolled his eyes at me twice as I tried to quickly decide on the options he gave. He ended up ringing me up for an iced vanilla americano which is absolutely not what I ordered. And he and I had discussed them adding milk to my drink which also didn't happen. He just pointed at the half and half on the counter when I brought it up after I received my drink. Guess my first experience was a fluke. Because this time they lost me as a customer. read more

I stopped by Kraken Coffee about 12 minutes before closing, and while I understand it was near the end of the day, I still expected friendly customer service. When I walked in, I wasn't greeted. I asked what kinds of lattes they offered, and the employee simply pointed at the syrup flavors listed on the menu and said, "These are the flavors," in a tone that came across as annoyed. I then asked how much honey was in the honey latte, and she responded that they measure by grams instead of pumps, then said it was "probably about two pumps." After I ordered and paid, she walked away without saying thank you or letting me know they would call my name or announce when my order was ready. When I picked up my drink, no one acknowledged me or thanked me. The latte itself was just okay, not bad, but nothing memorable or worth making a trip back for. Unfortunately, the customer service left a much bigger impression than the coffee. Even though I arrived shortly before closing, the shop was still open, and I don't think customers should feel like they're inconveniencing the staff for ordering during posted business hours. A visit to Avila Beach for a week and first morning was a walk to Kraken Coffee to grab a drink and some quick breakfast. I asked about the breakfast burritos, as I had heard they were pretty good here. The server informed me that they did not have any. They had opened no more than an hour before, so did they sell out? No, they just didn't have any. OK, we can check some other places. Oh, I had read that they have Nitro Tea. I've had Nitro Coffee at SB, and it's about the only think I can stomach from SB, so Nitro Tea sounded interesting. Sorry, they don't have Nitro Tea, the machine is broken. Bummer. Stopped here on a busy Sunday and got great service. Unfortunately my iced vanilla latte tasted like it was absent of any vanilla whatsoever. My boyfriend got their coconut vanilla latte special though and that was really good. The interior was super cool and we loved the theme as well as the plants they had. And it's a safety issue because it's right over the entrance door. Solution? Remove all the plants over the door frame. Aesthetically it looks ugly. There's plenty of pretty plants all around the inside with the right size. We traveled several hours for vacation to come to this coffee place, mainly for the Full View and delicious coffee. There's plenty of beautiful green plants right outside Kraken which is the lower part of the window. Cute little coffee shop within walking distance from the beach. They have a tiny spot upstairs to sit and a couple seats out in front of the shop. I like that they have stickers, necklaces, shirts and other merchandise to purchase. So why your waiting for your drink there is plenty of things to browse. I ordered a vanilla matcha. Tried this coffee shop after seeing the line for it. Ordered a brown sugar maple latte with almond milk and a dark mocha latte with oat milk. Unfortunately, the brown sugar maple latte was not up to par. The drink tasted sour and like it had expired milk. We asked for another version (obviously we said would pay for it) and they kindly offered to only charge us for a refill ($2.00). We decided to opt in for whole milk this time because we assumed it was the almond milk that gave it an expired rotten taste. This new version still did not taste pleasant. I'm not sure if it was the espresso or syrup being used but unfortunately we did not like this drink. The dark mocha latte was good but not mind blowing. Definitely better than the brown sugar maple latte. Even though we did not like the drinks as much as we thought, the baristas were very sweet. Perhaps we didn't order the correct drinks that make this place so popular. Let me know if there are any drinks worth going back to try. read more

We both wanted another coffee since the one we got at Kraken was small and lukewarm. We walked a few doors up the street, to the local market. The "barista" had no clue how to make a latte. It was awful. The 2 employees were chatting with each other the entire time we were there and barely listened to our orders. I ordered a large latte with an extra shot and extra foam. There was zero foam. The employee either ignored my request since she was too busy chatting to listen or she wasn't trained on how to properly make a simple latte. For the price the coffee should be at least decent. My husband and I both threw out our espresso drinks after a few sips. We ended up driving to BlackHorse coffee in SLO which was amazing! The ambiance cannot be beat. The beach is a stones throw away and the inside balcony overlooking the shop is such a vibe. Very cool. The coffee I would say is ok, a step up from Starbucks but also not in the ranks among the best coffee I've had. The breakfast burrito ($12) was not great (eggs, cheese, bacon and tater tots). Just tasted salty and filling, not really flavorful. I would not order it again. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into this coffee shop to see the walls and shelves FILLED with houseplants. It was like walking into a jungle! Not only that, but they had rose syrup as an option! Only one coffee shop that I've been to before had rose syrup and it quickly became a new favorite flavor of mine. However, most places don't have it. So imagine my excitement when I saw it on the list of flavor options at Kraken Coffee! It was delicious too! The staff were very warm, welcoming, and kind.
