One was a chocolate and sea salt caramel and the other was called salted nutty bar, which was a take on a Payday candy bar. They were both fantastic!! But the sea salt caramel one was by far the best! I feel bad for thinking this place would not deliver the goods based on their obvious location but.. I'm a skeptic and it (often) keeps me honest with myself. However, my skepticism was so wrong wrong wrong.. my man loved his coffee and I loved the fudge. Hulu definitely suffers from an identity problem. It is part cafe, part tourist-knick-knack store & ice-cream shop. That said, the proprietor is a warm bubbly woman that's was very excited to serve us breakfast one morning on a recent trip to Avila Beach. RUDE OWNER! We were looking for a dairy free dessert at Avila Beach. Another one of the shops suggested Hula Hut, because they have a large selection. We saw they did not have any dairy free ice cream, but asked about ingredients in the chocolate dipped bananas. The owner actually said, "I have an ingredient list, but it would require me to walk down the stairs, find the can, and read it. That's just not gonna happen." What absolutely abysmal customer service, and what a jerk! He obviously doesn't care that his customer base is happy. Since most of his customers are seasonal tourists, he must not get a lot of repeat customers. He certainly won't get my repeat business, ever. If you're visiting Avila Beach for ice cream, there are many options with much better customer service. Rude and disappointing. read more

This is a candy and ice cream shop on Avila Beach on the main pedestrian walk. My positive review was heavily influenced by the availability of Doc Burnstein's ice cream. They had about 10 flavors of this excellent ice cream available and the scoops that I had were reasonably fresh and seemed comparable with what I get when I visit the original shop. They also had a selection of average quality home made fudge (I tried 3 varieties) and a much better than average selection of gourmet chocolates. As the other reviewers pointed out, this shop sells both sweets and souvenirs but I would not fault their good taste in sweets just because it is being sold among souvenirs. read more

Five of us had ice cream in your store. We were having a delightful visit at a table in the back corner. We have visited your establishment every time we come to Avila and were here on a family reunion. We were very rudely treated by a woman as we were trying to leave and get out of her way when she said that the table we were at "was for employees to take their breaks" and implied we needed to leave. The table was not overtly designated " employees only." For years we've shopped in your store and purchased items and were dismayed that this is how she treats customers. This place is special by way of the staff who truly look like they enjoy the work and how they remember what type of mocha you like if you wander in two days in a row. Yes there are the normal vacation related t-shirts and sweat shirts and nick knacks to make you shed your dollars... But the outside tables...3.... And their daily warm plate breakfast specials... combined with the sound of waves and clear view of the ocean make this a good place to nibble, reflect and prepare for the day. read more

This is for the unkind store owner of Hula Hut in Avila Beach. I took my 2 little kids my nephew and niece at this place for ice cream after a walk to the beach. The staff lady was nice but the owner, a man in his late 50s to early 60s, treated me disrespectfully as I inquired if I could have 3 scoops of ice cream in a cup and ask for extra cup so I can split the scoops and my two little kids don't have to fight. Not only the owner is not kind, he disrespectfully replied that cups are not for free and I see that he don't want us in his store. ALL customers SHOULD BE treated FAIR and RESPECT. As a young lady with 4 kids, I thought the owner would understand that an overly priced ice cream, (1 scoop for $5) he would understand why I had to buy 3 scoops for $8. I still bought three 1 scoop for $5 and 2 scoops for $7 for my nephew and niece. I will never take my kids in this store again and I do not recommend this store to anyone. Pretty grossed out. The man serving ice cream did not wash his hands after handling money and then proceeded to serve ice cream with no gloves on! My wife and I were visiting family in the Pismo beach area. We were starting to get a bit hungry while going for our morning walk through Avila beach. We were attracted to the Hula Hut and thought we should give it a shot. We were greeted by the most pleasant and friendly young woman. The name on her t-shirt was Johnny. Later we found out her real name is Lilliana. It was between breakfast and lunch time. My wife ordered the breakfast burrito. I really was hungry for a good old fashioned fried egg sandwich with mayonnaise, bacon, lettuce, tomato on sour dough toast. It was not a menu item. Lilliana showed interest in the construction details of said sandwich. I was assured that the preparation of the sandwich was a strong possibility. When Lilliana brought our burrito and fried egg sandwich, it looked and smelled divine. My wife's burrito was very good. My fried egg sandwich was delicious to the point of being biblical. Please communicate our extreme satisfaction of Lilliana's service and dedication to Hula Hut's patrons. May I suggest that you consider adding Lilliana's old fashioned fried egg sandwich to both the breakfast and lunch menu. read more

I was visiting Avila Beach on a girl's trip with my mother. We decided to walk here for breakfast one morning. It is a very cute shop. The people are really friendly. The food, however, was not very good..I ordered the kahuna special with scrambles eggs- the eggs were terrible. I'm fairly certain they cook the eggs in the microwave...they came out very hard and rubbery and slightly green. The meal also came with a tasty cheese bagel and fresh fruit. We also ordered a coffee and spiced chai latte which were both delicious. They also have nice seating with views of the beach. I would go back to relax with a drink but probably wouldn't order food again. read more

Really good fudge - not overly sweet, just right. Owner was cordial but not friendly, even though I was really trying to be conversational and courteous. You'd think she would have been more friendly and attentive when I spent nearly $100 in-store; it's not like it was just a quick ice cream stop. We spent A LOT of time in the gift/store section, and I even returned an hour later to purchase more - she still wasn't friendly, but everyone else was very nice and pleasant. Had lunch at this place with a friend. They cater to the beach crowd, so I guess they don't think they will have return customers. The food was really mediocre at best. I had a sandwich and it was dry and not tasty at all. Side dishes were tired and I hardly touched them. The service was SUPER friendly, I really felt welcomed and since my friend is a local, she recognized him and we all had a nice chat. But great service can't make up for bad food. It sounds like from the other reviews that people enjoyed the ice cream here, but I didn't have any as I was looking for a lunch spot. Next time I'll definitely look elsewhere. read more

My in laws took my kids on a trip to the beach while my husband and I took a quick getaway for our anniversary. My daughter took her own money and bought me a special gift. She got me a mug at this store. However, the mug had been broken and super glued back together. I am unable to use it without it leaking. I plan to put shells or something in it. However, my daughter is heartbroken. She spent $18 of her own money. I feel like she was taken advantage of because she is a child. My heart hurts for her. read more

My wife and I have been frequenting the Hula Hut for numerous years. After the rude and condescending treatment I received from the owner today, I can honestly say that I will never patronize this restaurant ever again. Being residents of the Central Coast, we have the privilege of enjoying the beauties of the area on our daily bike rides to the Avila Beach area. On our ride today, we stopped in as usual, to have a casual lunch. After lunch was finished, I went inside to refill my wife's ice tea and to fill two water bottles with water for the ride home. Seeing as though they do not have table service, I had to stand in line behind three parties ordering their meals to get my refills. Once I got to the counter, I asked the owner for an ice tea refill. He displayed obvious annoyance in having to fulfill my request and filled the cup with tea (without ice!). I then asked to fill the water bottles for our ride home. He said to me, "We don't have time to fill water bottles today". He then directed me to the hose bib outside of the restaurant where they fill a dog's water dish. I asked if I could have some 'Sweet & Low' for the ice tea and he replied "You can find that on the 'Sweet & Low' table"(referring to the coffee station next to the counter). I can understand if I was treated this way by a '20 something' employee but this behavior was from the owner. Again, I will never give this guy any more of my money. The food and service here are terrible. It was like the lady at the counter was so inconvenienced by my ordering a salad that she made and served the worst possible salad that could be made. Pre sliced romaine, some cold cheese, and some cold shrimp straight from a freezer. It was so awful to look at I couldn't even try it. I took it back. To their credit they did give me my money back. I also took back the nachos, they were made on stale chips, and microwaved. Go here for ice cream and that's about it. read more

Visiting town and stopped in to look around and check out the menu. Chose to lunch elsewhere but I took note of the small case up front with some good looking baked items-brownies and such. After lunch I made a point of coming back to look closer. Very nice lady was really helpful with answering my questions. So I jumped in with both feet. Brownie, lemon cake slice, and banana muffin. Lemon cake was moist, flavorful, and just the right amount of lemon drizzle. Wife and I liked that very much. The muffin I chose to eat the next day at breakfast and while it was a well done muffin it lacked a lot in banana flavor. Least fave item. But the brownie was the star! My goodness just delicious. Very large cut, great "crackle" to the surface and dense wonderful chocolate flavor. Plus if you like the edge on your brownie this one was perfect. Lots of bakeries and brownies in my time on this earth and this was world class. Wish I'd got more or the recipe or could go back again soon.
