The Hula Hut is such a cute place to go to for breakfast/cafe/sweet shop. I started to drool once I saw they had fudge, but resisted the urge to purchase any. I ordered the oatmeal and a cup of coffee- it was pretty basic, but the employees are so sweet and friendly that I will go back just for them. The only thing I think the Hula Hut needs is a special dish that makes them stand out and makes people want to go there specifically for that one dish. read more

Amazing food, great people and really nice gift shop. We had breakfast burritos which were HUGE and each bite was so fresh and so delicious.

Tactless and abrasive management..... I witnessed the manager yell at a party of four for taking to long at a table after they had obviously spent a lot of money. He offended the people sitting but the only only person who should be embarrassed is the manager. His very public lack of respect for the people eating at his own restaurant demonstrates his poor character and laughable business skills. It immidiately left me feeling uncomfortable since I had also been there for a while. I felt rushed so I left and I am never going back. YES, it was that uncomfortable! There are so many wonderful places to go on the central coast, if you desire pleasant service and a peaceful meal I advise you to look elsewhere. Wow! What rude behavior! The owner is condescending, rude, and is probably the poorest example of what a owner of a small business owner should be. His customers seem to annoy him and he acts like he owns the greatest thing on earth. I mean come on... "Hula Hut" isn't exactly original and the only thing people really rave about is the ice cream which he doesn't make, he purchases (It is delicious by the way). So, from now on I will buy my coffee down the street at Jo Momma's (fresh made, not sitting in a pump dispenser all day like Hula Hut's), and I will have a far better sandwich at the Avila Store or at De Palo and Son's (Shell Beach). I just got the "castor oil" dark chocolate ice cream from doc bernsteins. It was so tasty and rich and creamy and gooey. Basically I wish I got two scoops instead of one. I had nearly finished paying for my $5 mocha - a plain, generic, artless, near tasteless brew served in the thinnest, hottest paper cup they could find - when the old man behind the counter started cracking wise about "that Hilary", and when I asked if that meant he was voting for Trump, he smiled and proudly announced, "Yes!". Pretty sure the old lady who served up my mocha was his wife, and I'm guessing they're the owners, which just bowls me over that a business owner would violate the first tenet of customer relations; don't talk politics or religion, especially if the politics you want to talk is about an orange misogynist loathed by about 90% of the people in this area. But then, that's Avila Beach personified, isn't it? A pretty place for the tourists to look at, run by people who think that square corners and granite countertops are all the rage. read more

Avoid eating a meal here. They serve really cheep bad food. I ordered the chicken wrap and it had hardly any chicken and the chicken taste terrible. After taking it back they would not return it for a different item. I asked for something different and they charged for the second item after serving me awful food. Extremely poor service. Ordered lunch for 5 people. Taco was COLD. The tortilla was not warmed up and the rice and beans were cold, too. BLT sandwich (bacon lettuce and tomato) had no tomatoes and the bacon looked like it was left over from breakfast. It was cold bacon. Turkey was okay. The worst BLT sandwich ever! After walking on the Bob Jones Bike Trail, we stopped by Hula Hut for some lunch. I order a Peri Peri Chicken Sandwich, and my husband ordered a Tri-Tip Sandwiches. They were both yummy! Then we had some ice cream. I had the Java ice cream. Little did we know that they were the famous Doc Burnstein's ice cream. The Java ice cream was very very good, but it did keep me awake until 3am... I also loved the gift shop area. We will definitely go back when we visit California central coast again. read more

The Hula Hut is a fabulous little store offering a little something for everyone. The food is wonderful - love the chili verde burritos or nachos with chili verde. Breakfast is so yummy - croissant with bacon/ham/or sausage as well as the breakfast burrito. Wonderful coffee drinks and chai teas as well as smoothies. The fudge is homemade and super, and they have quite a variety. The ice cream is Doc Bernstein's and it's great. The staff is so accomodating and friendly and will do everything to make your visit a good one. If you don't want to eat, they have great gifts. I highly recommend this place. We were looking for a lunch place and found it! My sandwich was simple, but delicious. Fruit on the side was sweet and ripe and FRESH!
