Lady at counter: "Ha, no. That's really hard to find." Me: "..." I waited too long, got my parfait and coffee (both of which were decent) and left. While I waited I watched her pull a shot: she ground til the basket was overfilled, didn't level it, did about a 1 pound tamp without putting the portafilter on the counter (holding it in her hand), and called it good. Unfortunately nothing good can come from a place without a kitchen? Avila is struggling for a decent place to frequent as a local. The business mantra is solely for the tourist. Bad service, sad, sad overpriced quality of food and not even so much as a thank you! I want to make a suggestion to Bill the owner, less is best! Perhaps you offer less menu options with higher quality and quantity. We stopped in yesterday and thought we would give this place a try again. We ordered the special fish sandwich, served on sourdough. Pittyful, there was fish on only half of the sandwich leaving a wilted piece of lettuce and skimpy tomato on the other half.....I could have made a better one. This place is a good stop for your ice cream craving, but I wouldn't recommend it for lunch. The coffee is also awesome. They serve it in a mug, feels much more personal! The woman that took my order was very nice and took great care of me, but my food was lacking. I ordered a mixed green salad (overpriced in the first place) and wasn't impressed. Partially my fault because I didn't order chicken on it (which costs extra by the way) but still. It consisted of lettuce, probably 3 or 4 slices of tomato, and a few random ringlets of onions. Didn't fill me up at all. Like I said, that's partially my fault, but for that price it wasn't worth it. I'd find somewhere else to go for lunch! read more

Came here for lunch with my sister since her office is just up the street and I was stuck in the area waiting for something from work. We both just had a cup of chowder (you can get a cup, bowl or bread bowl). Very good chowder. The service was excellent and we were able to sit outside and watch the ocean. I love this place and have normally had nothing but positive experiences and have spent a lot over the last 7 years starting at the Carroll's place right above the hula hut however this all changed during our visit tonight ( our 2nd off the day) we went to get ice cream as we do most nights and ordered a double scoop as always and it scoops were smaller than my daughters single scoops (she was helped by a different server) we had a young man and it's our second time with the same service from him which warranted my review on yelp. We questioned him about our serving being that of a double since it was so small and his comment was I'll weigh it for you - which meant nothing to us since we have no idea how much a single or double weigh and he slide the ice cream to me and was very arrogant. Since this was the second time we have ( my husband and I ) received this service things need to change. This individual needs customer service training big time and a lesson in respect. We have kids his age and are both professors . Sad that our favorite place has left a bad taste in our mouths. Hopefully this gets fixed because we will be here again and want to be able to enjoy our beloved v place again. read more

Worst breakfast ever. I ordered a breakfast burrito without the tortilla, with potatoes on the side. I got a mound of the driest, most tasteless eggs I have ever had, and some small diced potatoes and a lot of fried onions. The salsa did not help. I ate a few bites and sent the rest back. My husband go the ABT wrap and said it was so-so. Next time, Custom House, which has always been very good. Hula Hut may be good for ice cream or fudge but breakfast.............no way. read more

The owner has a fun store with an section for food. The menu is basic but the location wins the day. The store is cute and central to Avila Beach pier. Our burrito and poached egg were fine. We were in Avila Beach for a friend's wedding and stopped by Hula Hut to have lunch. We had the Turkey Gourmet sandwich (turkey, brie, tomato, lettuce on a croissant) which quite large and was absolutely wonderful. For $8.95, it comes with your choice of fruit, chips or homemade potato salad. Went back the next day and had the clam chowder which was also steaming hot, creamy thick, full of clams and very delicious. So on the day of the wedding, one of the bridesmaids called from the hair salon and asked me to pick up 7 more Turkey Gourmet sandwiches with 5 different variations on the original (you know the "swiss no brie", "light mayo", "no mayo", "mustard only", etc., not to mention most with fruit salad, but one chip and one potato salad order thrown in. This was on a Sunday around 1 p.m. which was a fairly busy time for the Hula Hut, but the staff was more than accomodating and friendly about all the variations and changes!!! We sampled some of the homemade fudge which was delicious and bought some to take home. Many of the gift items were unique and of high quality so it was fun to shop. The girl at our hotel recommended their breakfast burrito, but we didn't get around to trying that. The only regret I have is that we didn't get to try the ice cream that everyone raves about!!! Would definitely recommend Hula Hut for a good breakfast or lunch stop. The servers were very pleasant and helpful! read more

Very cool staff + patient with all 3 kids and the food was flavorful. I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich with potato salad and my wife order a crossaint sandwich and the kids got chicken nuggets and PB&J (that was the only thing that seemed pricey) we washed everything down with ice cream and shopped for a t-shirt and mug that was big enough to satisfy my morning coffee fix. Ice cream from Hula Hut was an ideal treat after our walk on the Bob Jones Trail. There was a bit of a wait to order and they seemed short staffed but it wasn't anything too terrible. Daughter 1 choose Caramel, Daughter 2 choose chocolate (both on cones), I picked the merlot raspberry truffle and hubby choose the praline (in a bowl). All were very good and the scoops were of a decent size. Outside seating is nice and clean so we choose there to eat. About halfway through I went back inside to ask for bowls as a 'disaster preventative measure' and was honestly expecting a little bit of resistance from the lady behind the counter (she was busy answering someones question) but was pleasantly surprised when a man preempted my request with an offer of bowls. I guess he noticed us through the window and assumed what I was going to ask for :-D I'm guessing they've seen the previous reviewers complaints about rude service and have stepped up their game. read more

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. The food was okay and overpriced (paid $9 for a cheese quesadilla I definitely could have made at home). Part of the price is sitting at the establishment on the beach which is understandable. However, 20 min into eating my food the manager, Bill, unplugged my charger cable and threw it on the ground saying "this isn't a library you can't stay here all day". If he had come talk to me first and explained that I wasn't allowed to do that I would have understood, but he was unnecessarily rude for no reason. Furthermore, he did not say anything to the other customer on his laptop who had been there for as long as I had been. If I wasn't young, female, and middle eastern he would not have acted like that towards me. Other than Bill, the workers were kind and understanding maybe next time he should have them speak to the customers. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

If you don't want ice cream, they have chocolate truffles as well as other goodies to entice your sweet tooth! I went out for a bike ride to avila and got a latte from the hut and took it out to the beach. Put it in my shoe and went for a swim and the seagulls quickly knocked it over. Went back inside shortly after and they were happy to reimburse me and they even made a funny latte pun. I also bought a blueberry muffin but it wasn't the best I've ever had but I will definitely be going back next time I'm in avila. read more
