Unfortunately, Humboldt Brews is keeping up its track record for having some of the rudest people working there. When I first moved up here, I went there for some metal shows, which were fun. Then they decided to stop having "those kind" of shows there, so I went in for lunch. Which was slow and bad. Since then, they have changed ownership (to my knowledge) & it got worse. I recently decided to give it another try...everyone deserves a second chance. They blew it! I was going to one of their soul nights & called on my way in to see if they still had tickets for sale (since they sell out all the time). First, when I asked about the tickets, the female on the phone was extremely short with me & told me she was too busy to check to see if she had the amount of tickets that I was looking for. I made it there within 5 to 10 minutes of ending this phone call. When I walked in, there was 1 person eating lunch & 2 people at the bar...one of which had just arrived. I stood there for a bit, while the bartender ignored myself & the other person that just got there. When she finally decided to come back to the bar, she waited on the person who just got there & then asked what I wanted. When I asked for the tickets, she was again extremely short with me. If I hadn't had other people who were going to this event with me, I would have walked out without ever going back. We ended up going to to soul night later in the evening. Now, I will admit, not really my scene, but that's ok..I like to experience new things...When we walked in we all had tickets in hand to speed things up...instead we needed our id's...no worries, we had them...then we went to turn in our tickets & get our wrist bands. The woman who gave me my wrist band was probably the highlight of the night...she was actually very nice & friendly!! After being there for a bit, I decided to go to the bar & get a drink. I stood next to some young ladies that were getting ignored by the bartender (same one I bought the tickets from). We sat there for a while and a young man came up and sat down next to them...the bartender came over & served him while ignoring us. When she finally came over to get our order, she was again rude. When I tried to pay for my pint with my card, she asked if I wanted to start a tab. When I said no, please run the card now, she then was very rude & told me that there was a $7.50 minimum (no sign posted, so I could decide if I could use cash BEFORE she poured my pint). I ended up buying a pint for complete strangers just so I could use my card. After this, I found out that people who were over in the area for dancing had to keep asking for WATER! there was an empty self-serve water container & people were actually offering to PAY to fill the water container! I also heard that they were asking people who were leaving to leave their wristbands, so they could make more money off of our tickets! Mediocre food that is way overpriced. About $15 for a burger is too much in my book. Used to like this place but they kept raising their prices and it's not worth it. Save your money and go somewhere more reasonable. Any of the breweries around humbolt will offer much better food and beer at a better price. Try lost coast brewery or eel river. I've also heard good things about mad river brewery but haven't been yet. Humbrews definitely won't be seeing me again. read more

Well... there were 10 of us in our party.and we had a reservation..however. we had to wait for tables to be set together when we arrived..service was spotty and not really present.. but even with that said you'd think someone would have really enjoyed their food.. not one person in our group would return here.. the food was greasy and tasted like the fryer oil needed to be changed.. I have always been a big fan of this place but My last visit here was horrible. The waiter was so rude, the beer was flat and old tasting and they forgot part of our order. First off, I'm a local who still remembers the good ol' days of Hum Brews. With that said, a group of us went there this weekend for a quick beer and bite to eat. We arrived at 4:20pm (go figure) and the pub was pretty crowded with people watching the NFL games. We found a table and a "waiter" took our order shortly there after. Our friend from out of town suggested we play some pool while we waited for our food. Great idea! So... three rounds of beer & four games of pool later, we were left pondering what ever happened to our food order. Our "waiter" had checked in on us twice to see if we needed more to drink but there was no mention of the status of our order. After another game of pool, my boyfriend asked our "waiter" where our food was and was told he had to check on it. Approx 5-10 mins later our "waiter" returned and informed us that the kitchen was a little behind (it was now 5:45pm) because one of the cooks had gotten a DUI the night before. How that affected our order, I'm not certain. No biggie, we ordered another round of beer and played yet another game of pool. About 20 mins after our "waiter" delivered us the story of the DUI inflicted cook, our food arrived (1 order of fish tacos; chicken strips, and a Pub Club sandwich)... Oh, but we had said we wanted 2 orders of fish tacos, so about 5 mins later, another order of fish tacos arrived. Finally, after 6pm, we sat down to eat. The food itself was ok... fries were oily and mushy and a little cold, I might add. Not to worry, I thought to myself, our "waiter" had been friendly and we had been understanding, I'm sure we will get some drinks on the house or something. Nope! Check came for $75... no free drinks...no discount for the wait. Only an apology. I know it's not the waiters fault but the whole experience was underwhelming to say the least. To start, ordered a sculpin but was given a Fresh Squeezed. Wouldn't have minded as FS is one of my favorites. Sent it back though as it was old and flat. My Sculpin arrives promptly and tastes old and flat too. It was poured with no head as well which isn't proper; head is good. Didn't even finish it as it was that bad. My wife's wine had obviously been opened a long time ago as it want right either. She also didn't finish it. I knew it was time to leave when we watched the bartender pour a pitcher by setting it on the drip tray and turned around while it filled to the rim with no head. Anyone can open up a beer bar I guess? We left and went to one of the dive bars on the square and they not only had fresh beer but they knew how to pour it as well; beer clean glassware and proper lacing too boot. L read more

Great place to grab a beer, play pool, watch the game, and grab a bite to eat. Definitely a place to kick back for awhile and never feel rushed to leave. Concert venue has nice equipment and they bring in good bands. However, I did have one negative run in once where my friend was rejected entrance to the concert because they didn't accept a green card as an ID, despite it being current and displaying their birthday... Which is why I took away a star. Not sure if that's a reflection on the restaurant or the bouncer, but it's something I won't soon forget. read more

Had yummy hummus, black bean salad with avo and veggies. Ranch-yogurt type dressing, liked a lot. Good sized portion. Sweet potatoes fries are super yummy with sesame oil-honey lemon dip. Hopefully this is an isolated experience but we had a pretty terrible time at Humbrews last night. A few of us wanted to grab a casual weeknight beer at about 9 o'clock and one of my friends had told me that the wings at Humbrews were great so I suggested we head over there. Upon arrival, the hostess told us that the kitchen was already shut down even though their website says that they serve food until 10 p.m. on weeknights. Not trying to make a big deal we decide to stick around for a pitcher anyways and then grab food elsewhere after. As I am ordering the pitcher, the girl tells us that we only have thirty minutes to drink it. When asked why, she said that they were cleaning things in the back. Again, not a big deal. We thought it was weird but didn't want to make a fuss or anything. So we are sitting and trying to enjoy our pitcher but about fifteen minutes later, another worker comes over to our table and tells us we need to leave. We still had half a pitcher left to drink and politely asked if were able to finish our pitcher before leaving and he very reluctantly said yes but that we had to "chug". At this point we were somewhat irritated. The website said that they were open until 11 and we got there at like 9. No food, fine. Thirty minutes to drink, whatever. But telling us to chug our beers and then leave when it was only 9:15 was pretty rude. The most irritating part of the entire ordeal was that after we were forced to chug the pitcher that we had paid for as customers, we were waiting for one of our party to use the restroom while the staff sat at the bar, ignoring us, drinking pints and all eating plates of food from the kitchen. I have only been to Humbrews once before but that experience really ruined our evening and we all agreed that we definitely did not want to contribute to their establishment when we were met by such incredible rudeness and hostility. read more

Amazing cheeses, including local chevre, on the sandwich options. Wonderful fries of many types, none of them greasy. And, o/c, a great selection of craft beers on tap. Im only giving them 2 stars because my beer was good and so were the fried mushrooms. My fish sandwich and boyfriends burger were decent but way overpriced for what they were. Overall it was decent until I get to the service aspect of it! Our waitress never came by our table to get us more beer or anything,we had to flag down other waitresses to get us more beer ETC. Then she practically threw our bill at us and walked away, looked at the bill she tried to charge us 23 dollars for boyfriends hamburger that the menu said 13....when asked about it she got a huge attitude and acted like we were in the wrong. Then she realized we got double charged for his hamburger additions...and charged us for stuff that should not have cost money at a sit down restaraunt. Overall food was mediocre and overpriced, beer is good but way overpriced and the service was horrendous. I would reccomend Lost Coast Brewery in Eureka over this place any day. read more

Another 5 minutes went by before someone even stopped by. She asked us what we wanted to drink, I asked what beers she had on tap, she threw a list on the table and walked away. I've been coming to this spot for longer than I would like to remember. From the time it was Humboldt Brewery home of Red Nectar to now where they try to bring good beer and food together with that same original spirit as the old Brewery but with a live music venue now. With all that being said I feel today was my last visit. Now I don't normally leave reviews but I want to save somebody from forming a bad experience of our area by going to this place. True it usually has a nice tap list, which is why I came in again tonight. I wanted to try on tap a newer brewery they had on tap from Petaluma. This is probably the 5th time in the last couple of years where a walked in took a seat and then sat..and sat..and sat. With nothing, no help no beer no water no anything for at least 20 minutes. I'm a pretty patient guy and I understand when things get busy and they are understaffed. This was not the case. One of the waitresses at the table next to us was busy chatting with some people for 5 minutes, I even asked if the table I was at was taken. Then I watched at least 3 other waitresses just kind of meander around and look busy but not really doing anything..so I have decided to never come back here and never bring my friends or family. I know they won't miss me. However, if you are considering this place for the first time or perhaps you hope they have changed, they haven't! Service is horrible. The servers are oblivious to what's going on. And it really isn't worth the bother to come here anymore. The food isn't really worth the horrible service plus don't ask about any of the beer because the staff usually can't answer you with anything but a guess. The beautiful thing is you are in Arcata and have a large selection of alternatives. The only time I've enjoyed myself here is when the owner is working. She is awesome and works hard. I wish I could say the same about the people she hires. I guess she hires what she can out of the leftovers that couldn't get jobs in Arcata while going to school. The food here has always been decent, but the service is infuriatingly terrible. My most recent visit to Humbrews will certainly be my last. We came in for lunch. The waiter took the order of the two tables around us that came in after us (annoying but not a deal breaker.) The food hadn't arrived after sitting there for an hour, as the folks around us who were seated after us were already finished with their meals. With no sign in sight of our meals arriving, we had to inform the waiter that we had to go. This comes after another really terrible experience I had a couple of years back when I was there with a group of colleagues around happy hour. After our first round of drinks and some snacks, we were going to order dinner and were informed by our waitress that they wanted our table to seat new guests. I could not believe it! I have never been made to feel so unwelcome at a restaurant in my life. The worst part is, I've spent thousands of dollars here over the last 10 years and have had spotty service and food quality. After tonight, I will never go back. We were there with a medium sized group of people with 3 small children and our waitress acted like we were really putting her out by even showing up, let alone ordering food. In fact, she missed an order, and when the customer asked about it, she told him he "should have talked louder." I would be willing to chalk this up to bad waitstaff, but the owner was helping her and we could overhear them talking about us--which they staged on purpose. The reality is that the food is not that good and I really won't miss going there. If you enjoy horrible service and ok food, go for it but I'd encourage you to try 3 Foods or Plaza Grill before settling for Humbrews. read more

Food is exactly what you would expect, just stick to the stuff you'd find at any other bar. Burgers, fish and chips, chicken wings, all filling and good. Beer selection is great, and always changing, always 3-4 IPA's to choose from. Atmosphere is good, staff is great, especially the pink haired one. An excellent little brewery within walking distance of the Plaza in downtown Arcata. The first place we hit when we roll into town, "Humbrews" does not look like a top level establishment, but the food and beers are outstanding! We like to sit toward the front along the window, and enjoy seeing "Liz", our favorite waitress, who is great at her service and attitude. I will usually order the "Hopthermia Double IPA (one of the hoppiest and most delicious brews I've ever sipped) and my wife and I will split the "Southwestern Chicken Wrap", an amazing blend of grilled chicken, beans, onion and avocados in the best prepared tortilla I've ever had! Combine that with an order of the Garlic Fries, and you'll be in Heaven. Prices are also great....don't miss this one! read more

I went to humbrews tonight to give it a second chance. Right away of the bat the service was not of high quality all around. I understand that it is a seat your self kinda of a place, with that being said i would expect the servers to be more attentive and pay attention as to whom is coming in. After sitting there a while waiting for menus we finally got them thanks to the person cleaning tables who noticed us. Once we received that it took a while again to get our order taken down. I made eye contact with the original person that brought us our menu to show that we are ready to order. She then proceeded to find the waitress and behold she finally graced us with her presence. We asked for two appetizers and our dinners. One of our appetizers came out first and then the second appetizer came out with the rest of the food. They are called appetizers because your suppose to receive them before your meal. Any who we started to eat our food and we started to noticed little things. I ordered a buffalo chicken wrap and the chicken was way over cooked on the outside it tasted like burnt batter and having supper hot slimy lettuce is not appetizing. My partner ordered a hamburger and when asked how he would like it, he responded by saying medium well. Well his hamburger was well done and not medium rare. Whats the point of asking how you would like your meat cooked if your not going to follow the costumers request. Our friend ordered the chicken & strips, and her chicken practically looked burnt. I dont know how often they change the oil they deep fry their food in but I would suggest that they change it more often then what they already due. The chicken it self did not taste that burnt but it was the batter on the outside that was burnt. Being someone who has worked in restaurants before, one of the main rules I have always followed is "dont serve something you wouldn't eat". If I were that waitress I would of returned it myself and asked for better looking/ appetizing chicken strips. The quality of the food was not great, I do have to say though, that the only good thing was our second appetizer which was chicken wings. Even if they came out late at least we enjoyed 1 out of the 6 things we ordered. Like I mentioned in the beginning, I came here giving this place a a second chance because I was not fond of it the first time. For sure I will not come back to this place for food. Its over priced for the questionable food they serve. They should just focus on making "wings" their thing, and not serve any other food. Now bouncing back to the server once we were done and ready to go, I had to ask the girl that was cleaning the tables for boxes to indicate that we were ready to go. Once the server noticed she was helping us, she came by our table to see if we were ready for the tab and if we needed any boxes. We let her know that the other girl was already getting them for us and that we were ready for the tab. Not once did our server ask us how we were doing, or asked about the quality of our food. I personally enjoy going to places were at least it seems like the server shows some kind of interest and the server is actually doing their job. I visit Humbrews quite often and I love the beers and their wings are incredibly tasty. I really enjoy all of the servers especially Jo, Shauna , Tom and Jaime. They have amazing musical artists as well as fun events and outstanding art. However, if there is one thing I can complain about, it is the bartender Robin. I am a regular customer and time after time when she is serving I am met with contempt and bad vibes. I feel I'm a fairly pleasant person so this is confusing to me. She is unreceptive to the needs of the customers. But, other than that you're sure to have a great time! read more

Should be a negative star.went there for a event on Halloween, the music was great however it took far too long to get a drink,they were almost impossible to get and my friends ended up going to a nearby bar that was quicker. It was very crowded and moving was annoying. All the workers from bouncers to servers were very rude and inconciderate. People were trying to leave and get there coats but the bouncers refused to let them back in to do so. This treatment was unfair considering the 20 dollar price of the ticket . I had asked to go back on to make sure a friend was ok,since I was her ride and the bouncer rudely refused. I stood a half an hour waiting her to come out.I grew worried but no one cared including the so called management. I asked again and again to go inside, thank goodness a nice worker woman helped me by going to look for her. The rest of them were insensitive and rude and had no care or concerns about my friend. I think this behavior was uncalled for ,I'm a victim and so is my friend so you can see that my concerns are valid. The workers including the manager didn't care one bit,and no talked very rude to me. I got very pissed who wouldn't? I am a person, but they treated us like cattle not costumers. Clearly run very poorly by untrained individuals. I am from the service industry and did I would call this nothing short of verbal abuse,definitely not good customer service by any standards. I will not recommended going here for a event it's very unorganized, you will not get your drinks and be treated inhumane. This review is about the management of Humboldt Brews, not the food or drinks. I had a beer and snack at this establishment one evening and accidentally left my new raincoat, the one I had been saving up to buy for several months prior. I returned the next day and the owner or manager, Steven, said he did find the coat, but it may have walked off with someone from the establishment because it was raining that night. At this point I didn't ever expect to see my rain coat again, but I left my name and number just in case a miracle happened. Steven called me a couple of days later and said he had retrieved my coat and would send it to me since I live out of state. I offered to pay for the shipping or even send a courier to pick it up. He said don't worry about it, he would get it to me. I honestly still didn't expect to ever see it again, but low and behold it showed up on my doorstep today. Gotta say that he went out of his way to get me my coat back, when it was clearly my fault for being absentminded. I'm very impressed and I will return and spend some more money next time I'm in town, if for no other reason than to return the favor. Thanks Steven, I really appreciate your honest and integrity.
