We specifically ordered a non-spicy pork trotter for our child, yet the dish that was served was spicy. While mistakes can happen, the staff's response was unacceptable. Instead of acknowledging the error and trying to resolve the situation, they were rude and showed little concern for the fact that the food was intended for a child. Customer service is often what determines whether a mistake can be forgiven. Unfortunately, the attitude we encountered made the experience even worse than the incorrect order itself. Hunan Color is located on Stanford Ranch Rd in Rocklin, occupying the former location of Chang Bros. The menu is primarily Hunan Style, including Changsha and Xiangxi dishes. There are also some Sichuan menu items. Both Hunan and Sichuan cuisines are famously spicy, so beware or be delighted if you like it hot. The owners, chefs, and server are all native Mandarin Chinese speakers, so it can be challenging to ask questions about the menu. On my last visit, the server used a translator on her phone. I recommend looking at the menu and Yelp photos ahead of time. In addition, the paper To Go menu is more descriptive than the restaurant menus, so best to refer to that. On my first visit, I asked the server what he recommended as an authentic dish. He suggested $22 C2 Stir-Fried Yellow Beef from the restaurant menu. On the paper To Go menu, it's called C2 Hunan Style Stir-Fried Beef. When I asked if it was spicy, he said the level could be adjusted. My receipt said it was less spicy, but it was more spicy than I was in the mood for. Had I known Hunan was in the menu item's name, I would not have ordered it. It sounded like it was his favorite dish, so I tried it. Yellow Beef or Hunan Style Stir-Fried Beef comes with jalapenos, cilantro, celery, and garlic. The jalapenos make it hot. Not my favorite vegetables to eat; they're more for adding flavor. It is a tasty dish. I was able to get 3 meals out of this order. R3 Dry Mix Rice Noodles mentions Hunan Style Pork on the paper menu, and R7 Beef Fried Rice/Chow Mein mentions Yellow Beef on the restaurant menu. Actually, the restaurant menu labels the entire "Rice Noodles & Special Staple Foods" section as Hunan, so you might want to inquire about spiciness. On my 2nd visit, I decided to order $18 T1 Country Style Bowl (aka Farmhouse One - Bowl Aroma). Sauteed Pork, Eggs, Black Fungus (wood ear mushrooms), Jalapeño, Celery, Green Onions, Ginger, Garlic, and maybe another type of a slivered mushroom that looked like part of a soy sauce noodle. Again, tasty and more spicy than I anticipated with the jalapenos. I will probably get 2 meals of this order. Both dishes had a little garnish of red chili peppers and came out within 5-10 minutes of ordering. If you're in hurry, this restaurant is for you! On my first visit, a regular customer let me taste one of his dishes: C5 You County Dried Tofu Stir-Fried Pork. The small bite I took wasn't spicy, so maybe that would be a better dish for me to order. On my 2nd visit, I was worried that a neighboring table would accidentally order spicy food for her young children, but fortunately, the mother is fluent in Chinese and knew how to order nonspicy. She chose M1 Orange Chicken and V7 Stir-Fried Tomato and Egg. The kids seemed excited for the tomato and egg dish. It really looked like a delicious generous portion. I probably should order like a kid as well! It would be helpful if the menu had spice level symbols. Perhaps substitute the jalapenos with bell peppers for people not wanting spicy. I don't feel like I have had jalapenos at other Chinese restaurants. Lunch Specials Menu is offered weekdays, 11 am to 3 pm. $16 as of June 2026. Choose 1 meat dish from 5 choices, 1 vegetable dish from 6 choices, fried rice or chow mein, and hot & sour soup or a soda. Meat Choices are Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Mongolian Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and Black Pepper Beef Tenderloin. Vegetable choices include Eggplant, Green Beans, Baby Bok Choy, Shredded Potato, Tomato & Egg. You'll have to flag down the server if you want anything. Fortunately, you get a pitcher of water on your table. After a mediocre experience here, I'd give it 3.5 stars. Let's just say it was the most expensive rice I've ever ordered. My daughter has a classmate who regularly orders a rice dish here made a specific way, and when we received ours, it didn't look like what the girls were used to seeing. I encouraged them to go back in and politely ask if it could be corrected. The staff laughed it off and fixed it, but in my opinion, it still wasn't really worth the trouble and the price was jaw dropping for a small portion of rice. It's a hard pass from this place. I have been wanting to try this place with my friends that actually eats spicy! This area has plenty of parking and the restaurants is huge. When we got there, we were greeted by the friendly waiter. We do order a lot of different dishes, My favorite is the jelly noodle. To people that do not enjoy the mala or stingy spicy tingling on your tongue you probably won't enjoy this. Honestly I like spicy but the tingling spicy feeling is not something I like. Most of the dishes have that spice. The food is good but only to people that enjoy those kind of spicy. The owner and family ran restaurant with authentic "Peppercorn" spices I've been craving with dried chili peppers yes please and garlic! Can't forget the garlic!! So we came to this location on our way back from Reno nevada. Everyone was super hungry and we need to make a pit stop in the Roseville area. I jumped on Yelp and this was one of the first things that popped up. Not going to lie I chose to go here because the colors I saw in the pictures from other yelpers were very vibrant and colorful. Coming into the restaurant we were greeted quickly by one of the servers and he asked if we were going to do takeout or dine in. We said it was going to be dining and he sat as quickly. We did not even wait to get a table. As we browse the menu we confirmed if the lunch specials were still available because it was pushing towards 2:00 p.m. and he told us yes. We all got the lunch specials and the different items we got were lemon chicken steamed rice green beans for one dish, the other was the spicy chicken with eggplant and green beans with fried rice, and the last one was another chicken dish with noodles, and the eggplant green bean side dish. Hands down this place was exceedingly amazing. The two chicken dishes though they looked a little similar had completely different taste profiles. We were also extremely happy with the lemon chicken because it was not overly breaded and the sauce tasted like fresh lemon juice and zest was used versus it being from a package. The sweet and sour soup that was started the meal was delicious because it had a lot of umami flavor Plus lots of bits of the bamboo shoots and tofu and mushroom like it was a nice little hearty cup to start your meal. Goodbye Chang Bros, Hello Hunan Color! They've been open for over a month now. We had a chance to check them out at opening (11am) on a Saturday morning after the gym. We weren't quite sure what to expect, especially since their specialty is spicy dishes and we are wimps and don't like anything spicy! Thankfully they have many dishes that are not spicy and the menu is HUGE! Something for everyone. They do have two menus, FYI. One is more Americanized with your Orange Chicken, Broccoli Beef etc. The other menu (spiral bound) is more Chinesey, with items like braised pork, tripe, etc. It's located behind SAFE Credit Union, in the same strip mall as Celestino's and Boba Lane. Parking is pretty easy to find. We love the booths here, spacious and comfy. Ordered yangzhou fried rice, braised pork, orange chicken, garlic baby cabbage (which we found out was bok choy, lol). Food came out very quickly, which we were impressed with. Husband said it's because food cooks faster on a wok. :) I guess I was apprehensive since they're a new restaurant and still figuring out the ropes so I assumed they'd take longer. But nope, everything came out quickly and was pretty good. Prices were decent--lower than we paid a few days ago when we went to try Highland Noodles. We had plenty of leftovers also. As we were sitting there, taking our time and enjoying our meal, I commented to my husband that we should tell our friends about this place because the wife really likes the braised pork dish but usually goes downtown for it. Then like 2 minutes later, I look over at the front entrance and our friends were walking in! Small world. Turns out they were in the area and looked on Yelp to find new restaurants in the vicinity. In the area looking for a place for lunch, we found this place on yelp. There's no places in the area that serves Szechuan type spicy food. This place has some nice booth seats by the window. The staff was friendly and let us choose where to sit. They have a nice menu selection; some that were familiar with at other Chinese restaurants. We took our time looking through the menu. I was drawn to the first page with the special, which either I didn't realize was only M-F because it didn't specify on the menu or they didn't know that's what I wanted. My wife didn't find the spicy beef soup she was looking for but decided to try the spicy fish soup. It was too numbing spicy for me, but the tomato egg soup was good and more suited for me. The kung pao chicken and the green beans had chili peppers in it but wasn't that spicy. They were good size portions and pretty good; not sure why the chicken in the kung pao chicken were cut into cubes though. It started to get salty as I ate more, so we asked for a bowl of rice. We definitely ordered too much, so we boxed a lot of the leftovers to take home. One of the ladies ask the other staff to get us our check; however, they got our check mixed up with the other table. Luckily my wife caught that. Since this place is new, it seems like the staff is still learning the menu. It's hard to find good Chinese food in the area. Excited that Roseville has a new Hunan restaurant since it so hard to find one around here! So we ordered a few dishes just to try .. the most I am excited is to try their boiling fish! My husband wanted the lunch special, where u can get one veggie, one meat, soup/soda and rice/fried rice/ noodles. I also wanted to try the boiled fish, string beans and stir fry beancurd. So when the food came, I was very surprised that it was so much food but realized that the waitress didn't give us the lunch special but each plate separately! We pointed the lunch special page, the waitress didn't say anything so assuming we ordered the lunch special. We found out later that it's a M-F special; however, in their actual menu didn't show anything written on it. Then the waitress just took the ordered w/out saying a word that it's not available but charge it as each different plate. That's basically trying to get their customers to order/pay more.... From $16 to $50 ( that's a huge difference). Not sure if this was accidentally or not but I hope it's just a mistake. Another mistake, I ordered the boiled fish (W4) but waitress wrote the pepper fish (W5). So it's ok to try a new dish. The flavor was "ma" like very numb than spicy. The soup is just ok taste water down. Our favorite ones were the stir fry beancurd and the string beans .. both pretty good comparing to other dishes. Overall, the food was ok nothing very special but I will say it's a little better than other older Chinese restaurant in the area (nothing compared to Yang kee my fave). Services were great, aside of the mistakes of the lunch special, my boil fish dish and giving us the wrong check. The ladies were very welcoming and nice. Ambiance - strip mall dining. Very Hunan Chinese. Limited English on the menu, and some interesting dishes, most spicy. Food - not my preferred style, others may love it. I had the Spicy braised pork belly $20, sans the chili's per my request. Thick chunks of uncured bacon pork. Some meat 1/2" thick with 3/4" of fat that I trimmed off. Very tasty, and since it is uncredited, not salty. Slight crisp to the edges of the meat. Big bowl of it, I forsee many breakfasts ahead. She had the stir-fry chicken fried rice, huge plate that we both ate from. Good, lots of chicken in it, not chunks but shredded. Not spicy. Lots of vegetarian options. Lots of boiled fish, spicy fish, tripe and things like that. Service was good. Windows need cleaning. Company is coming for dinner, place should be presentable. Fuzzy Carpet squares are so 1970. We used to come to this restaurant location back in the days when it was under different ownership. While the food was great back then, it was more Americanized Chinese food versus traditional Chinese food. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that, but I am always on the hunt for traditional Chinese food. The inside of the restaurant has been slightly refreshed and has a cool vibe inside. Staff were attentive and greeted us as soon as we walked in. Glasses of water delivered, food ordered, and we just had to be patient for the food to arrive. We didn't have to wait long. The beauty of a Chinese restaurant is, since most everything is cooked in a wok, food is cooked fast and in a few blinks of an eye, our food was here. Woo Hoo! We ordered garlic baby cabbage (actually was baby Bok choy), Yangzhou fried rice, orange peel chicken slices, and Mao-style braised pork. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the braised pork with the cabbage over the fried rice. Spectacularly yummy. Pricing wasn't bad and the portions were good. Everything was flavored just right. Staff was friendly and helpful in explaining each dish that we were interested in. We came at opening time and it wasn't long before patrons started arriving. **Authentic Szechuan Gem in Roseville** I've traveled all over the world searching for authentic Szechuan cuisine, and it's not easy to find but **Hunan Color** absolutely blew me away. They just opened in September, and after spotting them on Yelp, I had to give them a try. From the moment I walked into their warm, modern space and saw the authentic menu, I knew I was in the right place. The **garlic bok choy** was cooked perfectly--crisp, flavorful, and fresh. I also ordered **Hunan-style shrimp with peppers** (a variation of a fish dish on the menu), and it was bold, spicy, and packed with flavor. The team was even kind enough to let me order off-menu, which I really appreciated. The owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming and clearly passionate about the food and customer experience. If you're thing of a standard Chinese meal, think again! Pretty darn good IMHO. Rarely does a restaurant menu go over my head but this one does. There is so much Hunan stuff on the menu that I have no idea about, it was difficult to know where to start - this is a place that i found myself to be an absolute rookie in so I accept the challenge. The primary language is Chinese with the English in small print; a good start. Anyway, hot and sour soup is great, potstickers is great, and braised pork belly cubes is fantastic with a really great sauce. After snowboarding at Lake Tahoe and driving back to the Bay Area, we were influenced by reviews on Xiaohongshu and decided to try this Hunan restaurant -- and we're so glad we did! Dry Pot Intestines (干锅肥肠) - Absolutely delicious. Super flavorful and cooked perfectly. * Farmer's Stir-Fry Bowl (农家一碗香) - Very authentic. They reduced the heavy oil compared to the traditional version, which was really thoughtful and made it even better. * Stir-Fried Yellow Beef (小炒黄牛肉) - Not exactly the style I was expecting, but still very tasty. The beef was tender and paired well with the other ingredients. * Mouthwatering Chicken (口水鸡) - This was the BEST dish of the night. From the first bite, I was completely won over by their chili oil -- perfectly numbing and spicy. The chicken was incredibly tender and silky. If you can handle spicy food, you HAVE to try this! At the end of the meal, I asked the owner if I could buy some of their chili oil. She generously gifted me half a container -- so kind! All of the dishes here are freshly made to order -- no pre-made food. You can really taste the difference. Also, no strange miso-like flavor that some places have. The owner and another lovely staff member were both very warm and welcoming. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for authentic Hunan cuisine. New restaurant replacing the worn out Chang Bros. Upon entering the first thing I noticed was fresh and clean and new seating. I went for lunch on a Wednesday at11:30 am. There was one group of Asian women. I ordered the Mongolian chicken, garlic petite garlic cabbage, fried rice and spicy soup which was really a mild hot and sour soup. The chicken was delicious, I'm not Asian, so I can't say how authentic it was, but my taste buds were happy. The cabbage was tasty with a nice balance of fresh garlic, fried rice was fluffy and done just right. The spicy soup was a bit bland. The host was very busy with the table of four women and served European style, where they leave you alone while you eat. This restaurant is very different from any other Asian cuisine in the area. We first went to Hunan Color on 10/17/25 and it was delicious from start to finish. The house-made Chili Oil Crisp was really good and added so much flavor to everything. We ordered chow main, chow fun, and eggplant, and every dish was fresh and satisfying. The crispy garlic sauce was a standout and honestly one of the highlights of the meal. The chow main was our favorite dish and definitely something we would order again without hesitation. Food quality was a 5 out of 5. Service was also a 5 out of 5 and everyone was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere felt comfortable and inviting, about a 4 out of 5. Value was a solid 4 out of 5. Vegan and dietary options were about a 3.5 out of 5. Overall we gave it a 26.5 out of 30 and knew we would be back. We returned on 2/13/26 and tried a few new dishes. The dry fried green beans made extra spicy were very yummy and packed with flavor. The garlic cabbage was good but felt more average compared to the other dishes. The vegetarian chow main was very good again and confirmed that it is one of our go-to orders. Glad we discovered this place. It's debatably the most authentic Chinese food in Placer County along with Yankee Dumpling and Uncle Dumpling. However it's more regional, focused on spicy and peppercorn flavored foods. If you're not into spicy food there's still good variety and they can even make their specialties without spiciness. We always get the Mouth Watering Chicken/Saliva Chicken (probably my favorite version of this dish ever), the pea shoots (one of their seasonal veggies), and then rotate between different fish dishes. Our favorite of the fish dishes is sichuan-style boiling fish. The portions are pretty good for the price. It's still pretty quiet since it's newer but the upside is no wait! read more

Mongolian Beef was a knockout, as were the bok choy and the eggplant and green beans. We didn't get into the more deeply traditional (and far less Americanized) parts of the menu in this visit, but the offerings are broad and varied and welcoming to adventurers. (And there's orange chicken and fried rice for the timid and the kids!) The outside is whatever, but inside it's pleasant and well-appointed, and the seating is comfortable.
