Hands down the BEST Chinese food in Cleveland, make it Ohio or America for that matter, and growing up in what is the Midtown/Asia town neighborhood I know great Chinese food. I have been coming to this restaurant in many variations, owners and names, but it still remains consistently delicious and authentic. The decor is so moms, non existent really, there are menu pictures on the wall, Payne Avenue is always under construction or lacking enough storefronts but I will always come home to eat. The egg drop soup, I know it's simple, but it's full of yolk and large pieces of egg, especially if you hit it with white pepper for an extra punch. The beef with spicy green beans are full of flavor, tender and the best I town. The pan fried noodles, tonight we ordered 2 different variations, veggie full of s variety of mushrooms and the seafood full of Chinese broccoli l, shrimp, scallops and garlic, the perfect consistency of crunchy with a little bit of saucy noodles. A visit is never complete without dim sum, shrimp rice roll will always be my all time favorite. Tonight we ordered the Seafood Pan Fried Noodles and Salt Baked Calamari. The seafood noodles had a thick sauce on top, and had a mixture of both soft and crispy parts. There was a variety of seafood loaded on top, including shrimp, scallop, squid, imitation crabmeat, along with some mixed greens. I love ordering this dish!! $17.95 The Salt Baked Calamari was nicely salted with a touch of heat, but not so much heat that you can't enjoy! The calamari was cooked perfectly and was not chewy at all. For those who don't love heat, you can always eat it with the white rice which accompanies it to kill the heat. Here's an updated review, it's been awhile. I was sanding floors at one of my properties in the area. I needed my son to help me carry the sander down the steps. Then i said let's go to wonton gourmet for lunch. We walk in and a guy was taking a fish out of the tank, Im guessing to be cooked. My son was curious about the picture menu on the wall with the pics taken at least 15 years ago. He opted for the chicken fried nice and sesame chicken. I got the pepper steak lunch special. Food came out fast. His chicken was like sweet and sour with a soy sauce heavy fried rice and an egg roll. And the chicken fried rice had that signature authentic taste. My pepper steak was a good sized portion and cooked well with a beef sauce that went great with the fried rice. We shared and tested all the food. It was authentic and fantastic. The waitress was nice and took great care of us. The bathroom was nice and clean. Stay tined for my update in about 10 years, maybe sooner because i'll be back for sure. read more

We were visiting Cleveland and chose this place after reading reviews of all the places in the area and looking at the menu. The building looked a little disheveled, and the food pictures on the wall were faded, but the menu had lots of variety. The tables and chairs were more on the level of diner level. The waitress immediately told us we could sit anywhere and quickly got us some water and menus. We chose the Szechuan eggplant with beef, dry stir fried green beans with pork, mushu pork, and potstickers. The price was good, food cooked well, and the portions were huge. The green bean and eggplant portions are twice the size of what we get at our local restaurants. The Mushu pork about 50% bigger. They forgot to bring out the pancakes and hoisin sauce, but I ate the other food as I waited for them. For two people, we ended up having over half left of all the entrees and got doggy bags for them. So overall, the food quality and portions were excellent. The atmosphere of this restaurant was like being transported to a tiny restaurant spot in Shanghai, Beijing, or Hong Kong. I was with my sister when we ate here for the first time. We both thought it was amazing! Only locals were inside, there were pictures of the dishes on the wall in which I loved! When we arrived the parking lot was very easy to find. The restaurant was PACKED! ( That is a very good thing ). The hostess immediately greeted us and then sat us down. Once we sat down our waitress came over to set our table up, give us water, and give us our menu's. We took our time looking at all the dishes they had. We knew ahead of time that we'd be sharing the dishes and that normally at authentic Chinese or Szechuan restaurants we know they give large portions . We decided to get the Cumin Beef, Shrimp Wonton Egg Noodle Soup and Garlic Mini Bok Choi and they give you a huge bowl of rice to share with the table. For drinks they offer chinese herbal tea and water and soda too. We also decided to get the herbal tea and it was so yummy! Our food took maybe 30 minutes to come out but we were totally okay with that because we knew that the cooks were taking their time and making everything by hand and from scratch. This restaurant is as authentic as you can get in Cleveland. All the dumplings and wontons and some noodles are made in house including their broths for the soups. My sister and I absolutely loved the food. It was amazing! The portions were big and we could tell the cooks took their time. The flavors were just so unique and delicious! The Cumin Beef we got it spicy and they did not disappoint it was so yummy. It tasted like Cumin spices and beef it was very simple but very very good! Now the Shrimp Wonton Egg Noodle Soup was DELICIOUS! The wontons were huge and the noodles were cooked perfectly, it was a tiny bit fishy but nothing overwhelming at all. It was delicious and light! The Garlic Mini Bok Choi now this was just delicious! I loved this a lot because it was something different and it is very good for you! I had a meh experience at Wonton Gourmet & BBQ. Upon arrival, I waited for about 10 minutes to be acknowledged and then another 10 while they bussed a couple of small tables, since only large tables were available. OK, I get that, but once seated, no one brought a menu or water for quite a while, despite the restaurant, being about half empty. I was finally able to order, and the food was tasty, but the spicy lamb dish I ordered was pretty bland and it took a lot of effort to flag down a waitress to bring me some chili oil. The service here was sorely lacking in general. The servers avoid making eye contact, making it difficult to get their attention to get the check or anything else, and certainly no one asked how my meal was or even checked on me. I have always loved this place. My parents introduced it to me a couple of years ago and every visit has been pretty good. They used to have separate menus for more takeout dishes and then a Chinese menu which was very extensive for native people. I went here very recently before a Guardians game and it still lived up to my expectations. Now they just have 1 menu and it is comprehensively long. The pictures of the dishes on the wall are very informative but the prices are absent. I think the prices have gone up a bit since I was here last but the presentation, taste of the food are still good! I ordered a roast duck wonton noodle soup and it was bomb. My friend ordered their pork fried rice with eggroll and even for such a basic dish, it was probably the best fried rice I've ever had besides my mom's. BF ordered the Hong Kong style beef chow mein and it was pretty good. Portions are large and their house red chili oil is good too. It is always a good sign that a Chinese restaurant is authentic when it is packed with other Chinese people! I, however, did not see the hype. First of all, this place is NOT noticeable by anybody driving by. You would have to purposely look for it. I first learned about this place from Douglas Trattner's little book, Cleveland Eats, where Wonton was listed among must-try Asian restaurants. The prices, especially for lunch, are low and I found it easy to make changes/substitutions. I ordered the Szechwan Chicken combo platter with rice and an egg roll. I switched out the fried rice for white rice and could customize my spice level. Since I ordered it for takeout, I can't comment on service but my order was mad a very fast and packaged well for the long drive home. As for the food... well, honestly I was kind of disappointed. I heard so many good things and inside, it looked promising, but the Szechwan chicken combo was truly nothing inspiring. It seemed just like every other generic American-ized Chinese takeout joint. This has been my go-to restaurant for authentic and tasty Cantonese/Chinese food. With the limited options in Cleveland, I am glad that Wonton Gourmet exists! From the stir-fried dishes to fried rice to even Chinese BBQ, everything is pretty solid. So far, I have tried the roasted duck, beef chow fun, salt and pepper fried calamari, mapo tofu, orange chicken, sweet and sour pork, and Szechuan style egg plant. These were all very flavorful and delicious. The restaurant itself is pretty spacious but not too glamorous. I prefer ordering take out and eating at the comforts of my place. My favorite Three Dumpling Soup was at the top of my list of favorite soups, now it is not so good. They have changed the dumplings from nice light wontons to soso Gyoza heavy skinned potstickers, The Pork Chops with special chef sauce were dried out over fried and soaking in sauce to cover up not so good Pork Chop pieces that were chopped so much that there were many tiny bone pieces and caused me to chew them very carefully The Pork Lo mein was so below average. This restaurant rivals any Chinese restaurant I've eaten at in Toronto, and is certainly better than the ones in Michigan. The portions are generous, the prices are very reasonable, and everything we ordered was delicious. I don't think I've ever had better Peking pork chops anywhere else. The chops had no fat, it remained crispy even with the sauce all over it, and the sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. It was delicious over rice. A couple criticisms: the oil used to fry the chops was a little old, as evidenced by the slightly bitter flavor in the breading. There was also quite a bit of MSG. However, as I said, these are still the best I've had. The seafood chow mein was also really good. There was a generous amount of noodles and seafood, and it wasn't overly greasy. The gravy was delicious but not too thick or heavy. The only criticism here is that the shrimp were overcooked. The pea tips were delicious! They provided a huge portion, they were tender, and they were flavored really well (maybe a tiny bit too much salt, but still great). But's actually my favorite Chinese restaurant overall of any city (and I've lived in very large metropolitan areas with big Chinatowns). My favorite dish is the salted baked pork chop (with green onions, crispy garlic, and chilies) paired with salted fish and chicken fried rice. Add some chili oil for extra spice and it is ::chef's kiss::. Tried finding this in NYC and it just wasn't the same and not as flavorful. So whenever I visited my then boyfriend-now husband in Cleveland, he would always take me here. My daughter loves their wonton noodles soup with watercress, amongst other menu items. Again, chili oil makes everything even more tasty. The food comes out pretty quickly and it's consistent. There's one waitress who knows exactly what I'm going to order whenever I come in. The whole menu is on the wall with pictures so you know exactly what you're getting! Everything here is either sautéed, deep fried, or a soup based. It is very traditional Chinese food made to order. My usual go to is the Beijing pork chop and the fried calamari. The pork chop is sweet and tender and goes very well with the steamed rice they provide you. Just like any other pork chops, they are cooked with the bones in, so don't be surprised! It kind of reminds of me of orange chicken because of its sweet savory flavors. The deep fried squid is delicious and I usually order it anywhere I go.. it always seems to be fresh every time I order it, well 'Cleveland fresh' since we don't really have the ocean close by.
