Well, this was the worst Chinese I've had in a while. These guys are close to me, but closed down for Covid, so I was excited when I saw they had re-opened. Unfortunately, the entire meal was a mess. The scallion pancakes were underdone and doughy, the dumplings spit oil and tasted like they were filled with hotdogs, the crab rangoons were fishy, and the spare ribs were overcooked. Literally everything was bad. Even the dipping sauce had way too much vinegar. The lo mein was bland, so was the fried rice. General tsao's was very sweet, but had a good crunch. Reminded my of panda express. Chicken and broccoli was ok, but had carrots in it? Weird. Overall, just a mess. Maybe these guys need more time to get back on their game, but I won't order from here again to find out. read more

I'm not normally one to write a review for every take out place, but this one deserves some love. I'll be honest the normal Chinese food is barely 3 stars. However they get bumped up all the way to 4 stars due to their variety and price. Standard Issue Stuff: I'm always torn when ordering take out. Will it be Boneless Ribs? The General? Well Hunan Express has solved this ages old question. They have combination-combination platters! General tso Chicken AND Boneless Rib w/ Pork Fried Rice and Egg Roll for $8.95. Yes please. The boneless ribs are good, but their bone in ribs are lacking. That's all I have to say about that. Lunch Specials: All lunch specials are labeled as $5.25 and $5.75, but they only charge $5.25 every time. This includes things like General Tso's Shrimp / Sesame Shrimp / Coconut Shrimp which I actually don't see at a lot of standard issue spots. I don't think I've gotten a $5.25 lunch special anywhere since about 2002. The Fourth Star: Aside from combo platters and cheap prices this place caters to a very specific need in my life. Vegetarian Options. My wife is vegetarian and we often have to trek a good distance for vegetarian Chinese food. I don't just mean steamed vegetables or eggplant in garlic sauce. She's looking for the good stuff. She wants vegetarian versions of the take out staples. All for $10.95 or less Hunan Express offers Veg.Chicken or Veg.Beef with Broccoli Veg.Chicken or Veg.Beef with Mixed Vegetable Curry Veg.Chicken or Veg.Beef Veg.General Tso's Chicken/ Veg. Beef Or General Tso's Tofu Veg.Sesame Chicken or Veg. Beef Veg.Orange Chicken or Veg. Beef Ma Po Tofu Bonus: They have Vegetarian Egg Rolls and not just Spring Rolls like most places. This is my wife's absolute favorite. For the $10-$11 they absolutely pack your standard combination trey with veggie protein and give a side of white rice. Have you ever looked inside of real General Tso's chicken? It's not appetizing. From our last couple of orders I've actually grown to enjoy the veg. Beef and veg. I usually dont bother to do reviews. So then why the hell would I do a review for some random Chinese takeout place? WELL.... That's because, Hunan Express is amazing. Actually, "amazing" just doesn't cut it. Maybe, "unbelievable" will do this little place justice. Hunan Express' food is fantastic. It smells great. It tastes great. Not restaurant style, but pretty close. You can tell the food is made fresh - the food is not pre-heated, its cooked right in front of you. They use fresh ingredients. Wonton soup, fried chicken wings, black bean pork, the classics are all there in a giant menu. Prices? Hunan's combination platters are $8-10. Hunan Express sports an unreal $4.95 lunch special. $4.95... Seriously? In fact, when I first saw that on the flyer, I thought it was a misprint. $4.95 lunch special? Who does that? Well, Hunan Express does. But the real zinger.... Hunan STUFFS your portions. When we got our food, we were stunned. It was heavy - it was stuffed full with food. I'm 6 foot, I'm not a small guy, and I can't eat the entire portions for either the lunch or the dinner specials. These are two meals in one. I have to finish these meals the next day. Yes, its $4.95 for a huge portion of chicken, pork, shrimp, you name it with your choice of soup or eggroll. Hunan offers unbelievable value and quality for the price. I don't think there is a takeout place in a 50 mile radius that offers the value this place does, and I've been around many Chinese takeouts. Hunan absolutely destroys every Chinese food place in East Brunswick, with the exception of Orchid which is more of a refined restaurant. Wok Express in the EB mall? Garbage. Sunny Palace? See ya! Lulu's? What's that? And I'm standing there - you would never guess it, you would never bother to walk in, the place is a warzone. Boxes are strewn away everywhere. There are 3 tables randomly placed. The fan on the ceiling just sits there. The kitchen is right behind the counter and it's a disaster. They've clearly just moved in. And the crazy chef is flailing his hands with a smile on his face urging me on to take more sauce packets. But yet, they manage to pump out fantastic food. The appearance of this little place may deceive you. But for the price, who cares? You might think this review is over the top, exaggerated. It's not. If I could give this place 6 stars I would. You're looking for a gem? Hunan is the real deal. Just try it yourself. You'll thank me later. read more

As a vegan I was VERY happy to find this little place offers not only tofu but also a seitan based replacement for chicken or beef. They call it "vegetable version" chicken or beef which is a strange way to describe it but it's seitan for sure. The chicken was probably the best I ever had, it was also so authentic it fooled 3 non vegans, they totally thought it was General Tso's Chicken. Flavor was good, they also had brown rice as an option which we like. read more

We've been slowly going through all the vegetarian meat options...chicken and broccoli, general tso's....so far everything continues to be great. I have never had an issue calling in an order, regardless of whether it's the nice couple that owns it answering the phone or their kids. Know what you want, call and speak clearly. I usually tell them the number on the menu in addition to the name. Isn't it like that ordering from any restaurant? I have no opinion on delivery since I always go pick up my food. As mentioned before, it's a pretty standard Chinese spot. My husband and I order from them when we are looking for inexpensive but decent food. We usually stick to the standard chicken and broccoli. I am giving them 4 stars because for the price, the food is really very good. We were very pleasantly surprised. Both the person who took our order and the person who delivered our food were extremely friendly. We decided to give this place a chance after getting a menu in our mailbox. I'm so glad we did. The Chicken with Snowpeas was absolutely DELICIOUS! Seriously the best I've ever had. The sauce was sweet and balanced perfectly. Everything else was good. The only thing we had issue with was that the Fried shrimp looked as if it had come from the freezer section of the local grocery store. It wasn't the worst thing in the world but not up to par with how everything else was. I have just had the worst experience with this restaurant. I placed an order and requested 2 "Lunch Combos". Upon receiving our order we noticed on the receipt it was not rung up as lunch. I called back regarding this issue. I was then told that I ordered incorrectly and should have said "Lunch Special" instead of "Lunch Combo". Again I expressed what should that matter if I requested a Lunch Combo. The man on the phone goes on to tell me that I ordered wrong and I got more food anyway (saying this to me implying that's it's no big deal). I again stated we did not plan to have that much food nor do we need it. I was yelled at on the phone by this man in front of other members of staff in the office. I was so mortified by the way he was talking to me that I completely lost my appetite. Due to him being extremely rude I requested a refund and gave the food back to the delivery driver as he was waited in the lobby. We are still awaiting the refund and hope that they can at least care about their customer service level enough to return our money in a timely manner. I would not refer them purely off of customer service. We would have gladly given the food back with no issue if it was suggested that they deliver is the proper order but again he was more willing to argue with me then to resolve the issue. My office will no longer order from then nor will them members of my office. It's very unfortunate as we have ordered from them many times before. read more

I usually do not have problem with this place but today my opinion changed. Ordered the Fresh Shrimp Chow Mein. It got delivered to my house and I got a quart of vegetable and some shrimps. Called the restaurant to informed them I got no noodles and got 2 different answers, 1. the vegetable are the chow mein ..... ( I'm chinese myself who are you trying to fool, and also if that was the case why do you have vegetable chow mein on the menu) 2. the fried noodles are the noodles and if I want actual noodles I have to order Lo mein (we're talking about the fried noodles restaurant serve as appetizer with the orange sauce) So beware to those who likes chow mein this places chow mein have no noodles in it. read more

I tried this place for the first time today and it took me ten times to repeat my order because he couldn't understand me, not only that it took an hour and a half to get it delivered and the food was cold! I called to complain and he was saying you sure it's cold? It's not cold. Are you sure? I told him it was my first time ordering for them he didn't offer anything his excuse was we are busy. Worst Chinese place . They just called me back and asked for them to pick up the food tomorrow if it's not good and then they can exchange it. What are they going to do with old food? Amazing Chinese food, awesome menu, some of the best Chinese food you will ever have.

We've tried many other dishes since the last time and they were all excellent. The mixed vegetables made in their garlic sauce is terrific. I always try something that historically, for me, has been ordinary and bland. So, I tried the chicken chow mein. Surprise. It was great. Actually had lots of flavor, the meat was good and the veggies cooked the way they should be. Also, their lo mein wasn't bland. Was very pleased with it. Aside from most of the things we're enjoying from Hunan Express, they happen to have the best spare ribs--atleast in this area. They're definitely worth ordering. read more

I ordered online and waited for an hour then I called 3 times but no answer. My husband went there but the door was locked. "Its closed", my husband said. He went to another restaurant and brought us food but guess what, after we ate, the bell rang, they sent the food. Very unprofessional. I order from this place pretty frequently. Today I ordered (took 40 mins - their usual delivery time) and they brought me the wrong item. I look at the receipt and they got my order wrong when I called them the first time. I called back to tell them THEIR mistake and they informed me that they would bring the correct item but I would have to pay the difference ($2) and give them back the wrong item they brought me. I assume they would also think I should tip the delivery guy again. When a business makes a mistake, they would be the ones who take the cost of that mistake. Obviously this business is not doing too well. If they needed the food and the money back, they are obviously having some financial issues. I will never be ordering from here again, I can't imagine where else they are cutting costs if $2 was so necessary. read more
