The menu is outdated and doesn't show the correct prices. The combo listed as $10.50 ended up costing $13.60. The fried rice had a terrible taste, likely from old oil used in the deep fryer. While not exactly in the neighborhood, Hunan Garden in Allentown, NJ, is a worthwhile trip if better than average Chinese/American cuisine is what you have a yen for. I drove there for lunch this week and had a pleasant late lunch is a very clean house. The owner (Jerry) was affable and happy to engage in conversation, especially since I was the only customer. I asked why he chose this name, and he explained that although he and his wife were from Fuzhou, he thought he needed to appeal to a broader audience than the traditional Canton styled dishes. Add some heat to the menu and they will come. He suggested adding spice to the General Tso's Chicken, and I agreed. The platter arrived about 10 minutes later looking like the sauce was a deeper red than normal, and indeed I could see that chili sauce had been added to the mix. I liked the flavor and the quantity of the chicken used, but the breading was a bit thick and hid the texture and freshness of the fowl. The Fried Rice was pretty good. Jerry admitted that he could not focus on authentic native dishes due to the demographics around this ex-urban scene. But, given advanced notice, he was more than willing to prepare whatever anyone wanted. Hunan Garden is certainly a positive surprise to be found in a mini strip center on the outskirts of Allentown. My one star review is based mostly on how irritated I am with my order. I ordered roast pork lo mein. Apparently, they thought I ordered roast pork w/ bone and gristle lo mein. Easily my favorite chinese place. Everything always comes out smoking hot and delicious. My favorites include their sesame chicken, general tso, and dishes with garlic sauce. Items designed spicey actually have spice to them, unlike many other restaurants. The service is pleasant, with an extremely clean environment. They are not set up restaurant style, but they don't feel like the typical dumpy takeout place either. There is quite a bit of seating which is great for those of us who stop in for lunch. For anyone in the Allentown area, I highly recommend going here at least once. read more

This is one of the few Chinese Restaurants where you don't feel gross after eating it. The chicken is nicely sliced and appears to be pounded thin and perfectly cut into bite sizes. You can definitely tell it's chicken, not like other establishments where it is thin and grizzly looking. The egg rolls (and shrimp rolls) are packed nicely fried perfectly. The portions are perfect. This is by far the most flavorful of all cheap Chinese takeout I have eaten. A note about REAL Chinese food: the meat has bones. The restaurants serve deboned meats for the american palate. I was told by one person "Americans like boneless meat because they are too lazy to eat around the bones". And I agree most Americans are not patient enough to eat meat with tiny bones and pick them out. I did not get any bones in my meal. Another note that the weird texture someone reviewed about the meat is because the restaurant tenderizes the meat. It does sometimes have a gummy and soft texture, but the meat is perfectly OK to eat. Most cheap Chinese places tenderize the meat and it comes out soft and gummy. I ordered the hunan chicken lunch with fried rice. I kind of like they don't give you soup with your lunch meal because I don't trust Chinese restaurants that do the "value" meal and load you up with tons of badly made food. The meal seemed to be cooked fresh because I waited at the restaurant for 20 minutes and no one else was there. I could hear the stir frying in the kitchen. There were huge pieces of onion in the fried rice which makes me believe they make homemade fried rice. The rice isn't overly salty. The hunan chicken was surprising. It had tomato seeds in it so it looked like a different type of sauce than the average "oil and soy sauce" stuff I get from other restaurants. The sauce also looked like it had very little oil which was nice because I hate overly oily Chinese food. The sauce was sweet, tangy, spicy, and sour all at once. It was a really great sauce. I asked for it to be extra spicy because I know Chinese restaurants make mild food for Americans. Asking for extra spicy made the dish come out with a good amount of spice, but I definitely wouldn't call it "spicy". Overall, I'm excited to try other foods here and am happy it's close to my house. I never came here before because I was scared some old white people would be running it because there is NO ethnic food in about a 15-mile radius of this area. I'm not sure I can properly express my joy at finding out that something other than an Italian restaurant/pizzeria was opening in Allentown! I would have frequented this place just for variety's sake, but thankfully, the food from Hunan Garden is very good in it's own right. I love their mixed vegetables and tofu! I often ask for the tofu to be steamed, for a white sauce, for no peppers, and brown rice (okay, so maybe I can be a little picky..) and they are happy to accommodate me. In fact, I order this so often, I'm pretty sure they know it's me on the phone... I really like their moo shi vegetables as well. Food is good but SLOW. Several times I was told 20 minutes but waited the better part of an hour.

We live a short drive from Hunan Garden and we were really excited to have a Chinese restaurant so close to home. It didn't even matter to us that they didn't deliver. When they first opened, everything was great compared to other Chinese food restaurants in the area, but things seemed to go downhill over time and the consistency of the food just was not there. The fried rice seemed to change over time. The sauce for the sesame chicken and General Tsao's chicken was different at first (as it should be), but then it was obvious that it became the same sauce, but one with sesame seeds and one with hot peppers in it. The breaded chicken dishes like sesame chicken and General Tsao's would end up being 1/3 white meat, 1/3 dark meat and 1/3 chunks of fried breading. The dumplings went from looking like the typical dumplings we are used to, to something flat and almost ravioli-like. Unfortunately, our last visit there will most likely be our last as the meat in both the chicken with garlic sauce and the pepper steak with onions had a very odd texture and consistency. It's hard to even explain in words. It's unfortunate because decent Chinese food options seem harder and harder to come by these days. I guess until then, we will just keep making the trip to Peking Pavilion to get our Chinese food fix or maybe even just PF Changs. read more

After a long day of road-trip traveling, my family and I were looking for a good place to eat. We were really trying to avoid the notorious Burger Kings and Sbarros, so we went on Yelp to try to find a decent place. Although the parking lot was almost empty when we got here, we decided to venture in anyway. The place is incredibly clean, which I took as a good sign, and the portions were very generous. The food was the best Chinese takeout that I've ever had. Highly recommend the Singapore noodles, chow fun, sesame chicken, and the garlic sauce in the broccoli and garlic sauce was absolutely perfect! The food tasted fresh and was appetizing. I am going to give five stars because I don't have the option for giving 4.5. Food is very good. I am very sensitive to msg so I am fairly certain they don't use it and their food is still delicious. However, I pay $12 for a "quart" of a shrimp dish (I always change the type to try new things) and that usually includes about 7-8 shrimp, then very cheap veggies added as filler (celery, onion, carrots). My fiancé loves the General tso and they give tons of mostly dark meat, which he is satisfied with. Anyway, all that being said I have to say I have never been disappointed besides by the amount of seafood to veggie ratio for the price you pay. read more
