My family has been going to this place since 1986, and we always order their bean sprouts roll in peanut sauce. They're not on the menu but really should be. It has remained as delicious as they were since 1986. Yes, the place hasn't really changed that much at all. The staff has always remained very friendly with very familiar faces. Shoutout to Mike who assisted us during dinner last night. He is very personable. They even gave us a plate of noodles, compliments of the house. Delicious with that wok, smokey taste. Used to be my go to Chinese Restaurant but it has gone significantly downhill... staff is the rudest you will ever meet, they hover over you almost trying to rush you and they just simply are not friendly whatsoever. Boneless spare ribs were super tough and overloaded with sauce... beef and broccoli had questionable beef pieces in it and the broccoli was hard as a rock despite us asking for it very very soft (well done.) I think last night was my last straw here, we went up to pay and told the owner (woman and some man) that the meal was not good and we come here often and it's been disappointing the past 2/3 times. They asked questions why it wasn't good but then didn't offer to make anything right. Will be taking my business elsewhere now. read more

Ordered from here last night because my regular Chinese spot was closed. We ordered hot and sour soup for starters and it was good, but a little lacking in flavor. Fried dumplings were excellent. For dinner we ordered broccoli with garlic sauce and lemon chicken. The broccoli was very good. The lemon chicken is just a plain fried chicken cutlet sliced up ( sort of like chicken katsu ) and served with a lemon sauce on the side. The chicken was dry and overdone and the lemon sauce was kinda awful. Would have been better with just a squeeze of fresh lemon. read more

This was such a delightful dining experience tonight! I was in the mood for Chinese food, but not necessarily to take out kind. But I have to admit that I've never actually had a Chinese dining experience. What a difference! The flavors were so much richer and the texture and the composition was lighter. Beat every expectation! The flavors were rich, and the portions were sizable. The attention and service was top-notch. Last night I took my husband out to dinner at Hunan Spring. It was his first time there. Being from the area, I've been here multiple times over the years, but this was my first time back in quite a long time (maybe 6 or 7 years). Hunan did not disappoint. Old school, legit, good eats. Definitely comfort food for me and gets me all nostalgic for when I was a kid. Surprisingly, there are options for vegetarians (like my husband). Here's what we ordered and shared - with the exception of one non-vegetarian appetizer that I HAD to order since I was there. Sample Vegetarian-Friendly Meal: - Vegetarian Hot and Sour Soup (for two) - Pan Fried Scallion Pancake - Eggplant in Garlic Sauce - Sautéed Shanghai Baby Bochoy We brought home leftovers that my husband had for lunch today. what a fun wonderful family dinner! as most reviews rave the old school chinese restaurant; reminds me when in the 1950's my family would take us to chinatown in nyc! the restaurant used to be an all American diner now for over thirty years is an elegant well kept chinese restaurant. even the way the food is served so nicely and picture perfect dishes, the friendly owner visiting every table smiling marking sure everything is fine. now for the food review; first off the flavors were truly unique to Hunan Spring where my usual take out food is delicious but the flavors are similar but HUNAN SPRINGS chefs made the traditional chinese dishes taste unique so it's a wonderful surprise like tasing my familiar favorites for the first time! we had soft plump perfectly steamed vegetable dumplings, tender juicy beef on a stick, cold sesame noodles in a nice tangy thick sauce, vegetarian hot sour soup chock full of soft spicy cubes of tofu, crisp thick fried scallion pancakes; and all the above were just our appetizers! next we had sizzling platter with three kinds of meats, then buddhist delight, moo shu vegetables, all with tastes better than you're usual chinese all once again reminding me of china town , we all left with our stomachs full on the brink of happily hurting! can't wait to come back with other members of my family and friends! read more

I wish I could leave an amazing review for this restaurant but as I lay in bed with a stomach and appetite recovering from a night of massive vomit, nausea, stomach pain, drowsiness, and wooziness, I cannot. The common denominator in these dishes were that shrimp was in the soup and the main dish. All of these dishes were so tasty going down. The shrimp and broccoli was very salt my and in a sauce thicker than I would typically like but I didn't mind it, but after being sick and vomiting for hours, I'm guessing it was the shrimp that did the job since it was the common denominator. I ordered the pork fried rice was not cooked. The rice was not done. Not even close. Almost all of the ricewas hard. Not edible. When i called to tell them about it, she hung up on me. surprised because I originally thought the line got dropped and that she couldn't have possibly hung up on me...a man answered and said they were extremely busy. So customers about to pay and get raw rice were more important that satisfying existing customers that paid already. Been a customer for many years and last couple of experiences have been the worst. It isn't cheap in comparison to other restaurants but I bet the service at others is better. The service was always suspect and now the food is experience is going down. Passing through Saturday night, every table was taken so we decided to stop for dinner. I'd have to say keep going. Maybe takeout is better as the restaurant is old and very musty. Although the pancakes with my moo shu were great, that and the water were the best thing going. Sorry spring. The pad thai wasn't spicy, moo shu was decent not enough to come back. I left a review years ago for this restaurant and apologize for my response and denial when asked if I left the review from the owners. I denied I did but I felt sure they knew it was me. I pointed out the look of the look of some parts of the exterior is somewhat dated in style. I neglected to relay the bathroom is spotlessly clean and fresh. I also made mention friendliness but I did not mention how attentive the owners and staff are with making sure you're order is presented deliciously. We made a reservation for 6:30 and were seated, restaurant was pretty busy. We ordered and ate in a timely fashion -- did not meander or sit and talk for a long period of time at all. In sum, we probably took about 1 hour to sit down, order, wait for the food, and eat (which seems like a completely reasonable amount of time to me for a party of 6). Afterwards, having just had the bill collected from us with tip, the lady, who seemed to be the manager, said to us, "time to leave." I replied that I just wanted to finish my tea. I've ordered takeout from Hunan Spring twice and had a delicious meal on both occasions. I ordered from DoorDash the first time, and the food was hot and fresh. The second time, I ordered for in-person pickup and my food was ready within 10 minutes. I've had the pork fried rice, vegetable lo mein, and the egg rolls. Whatever you do DON'T dine at Hunan Spring on Morris Ave. in Springfield NJ. They've gone extremely downhill with Terrible service and the food is expensive and average at best. I can't believe how rudely I was treated by the server and cashier. I've had issues there on occasion but never this bad. What's crazy is this other couple came in after me and were treated like royalty as I had to wait for service as they were waited on hand over foot. They weren't even crowded. If not for the server coming over I'd still be waiting. He wanted to be paid but the dumbass at the front just ignores me. The food was excellent!!! However I am handicapped and Hunan Spring is not Handicapped accessible. There are stairs to enter/no ramp. and the restrooms are down a full flight of stairs and the bathroom itself is not Handicapped accessible. This us a shame since the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and the abiance is very nice.If you do not have handicapped issues I would highly recommend it. The quality of the food and service has gone down considerably since 2020. One cannot contribute it to ownership change as the same ownership is evident. We were seated at a booth adjacent to the cashier/reception station and were completely repulsed by the male owner calling a male gentleman of color the "N Word" as he left the restaurant with his young daughter after simply asking for extra sauce and utensils after receiving his order. Besides my favorite Chinese restaurant in NJ, the excellent food is surpassed by their top notch service and servings so large you are most always bringing home leftovers!
