Incredibly rude staff. They told me 5 minutes. After 10 minutes and one more inquiry, I was snapped at by a rude waiter who informed me that "if they said 10 minutes it could be way longer." Ordered takeout here for the first time. In a strip mall off Route 22. We got egg rolls which were good, not great. Scallion pancakes were very good. Egg drop soup was good and the spicy hit and sour soup was actual hot mostly from chilli oil. My Wife got moo shu chicken and said it was good. Boneless spare ribs were ranked good not great by my Daughter. My Kung Pao chicken was very good. So a mixed bag on the food. They seemed understaffed with one guy trying to get orders out. My parents and I were already in New Jersey so we decided to visit my good friend and her daughter. At first, we were heading to one of her diner spots but last minute we changed our minds and we came here instead. My good friend and her family frequently dine-in for lunch and dinner here so 老板娘Ling already knows them. The restaurant was spacious with a sushi bar near the entrance as the Sushi Chef was behind the counter slicing up sashimi. My mom ordered for the table...Sesame Jumbo Shrimp (this was definitely my favorite...totally thumbs up...very tasty dish), Taiwan Mai Fun (it was bland so I asked for some hot sauce), and Beef with Broccoli + a bowl of white rice for my good friend's daughter. My good friend ordered her favorite dish Egg Foo Yung with Pork + a bowl of white rice (these two omelets were huge...don't forget to pour the hoisin sauce over them...very tasty dish as well). We were in the area and looked for a place to have an early dinner. Thus, we came across Chen's 22 and agreed to give them a try. As expected, since it was early for dinner so we were the only dine-in customers there. The restaurant is on the small side, kind of long and narrow. We were greeted and seated by a friendly woman who also turned out to be our server. Interestingly, each table had a small bowl of duck sauce and a plate of crispy wide noodles on it. We had never seen that before. We started with soup. My husband and I had a cup of hot and sour soup while our son-in-law had wonton soup. The hot and sour soup had a generous amount of stock but didn't have any kick to it. Our son-in-law liked his wonton soup which had a generous amount of wontons. We used the crispy noodles in our soup. The restaurant has an extensive menu of Chinese items, as well as some Thai entrees plus sushi. We all had Chinese items. I had chicken with bok choy which consisted of small strips of white meat chicken which was on a bed of sauteed bok choy. This dish had a mild sauce and I enjoyed it as I hadn't had bok choy in sometime. My husband had chicken with garlic. He said the garlic flavoring came through very clearly. Our son-in-law had sweet and sour chicken. The chicken was fried and the sweet and sour sauce was served on the side. He, too, enjoyed his dinner. We were offered a complimentary pot of tea which we accepted. Our son-in-law got a soda. As our meal progressed, we realized that this restaurant is a true mom and pop business. Two young children (pre-school to elementary school age) sat in the restaurant and kept themselves occupied. At one point, their dad came out of the kitchen. Kudos to Mom and Dad for two very well behaved kids! We found the food to be A-OK. The portion sizes were generous and reasonably priced. Should we ever be in the area again, we would consider coming here to eat. They have their share of regular customers. While we were there, one came in for a take-out order. read more

Much has changed since the pre-Covid version of Chen's 22. While several of the prior negative observations have been remedied (service was attentive, complimentary bowl of fried noodles wasn't soggy), on balance the changes were in the wrong direction. It is very obvious that new management is in charge, no more so than the caliber of cooks in their kitchen. The decor has been pared-down to largely unadorned gray walls. Tables are now far fewer in number, making for an airier and more relaxed setting. They seem to have removed most of the rarely-found dishes that made Chen's 22 a special experience. A full page of their menu is now dedicated to steamed seafood pots, a trend that is now appearing everywhere. To its credit, post-Covid pricing has yet to be implemented. We began our dinner for two with Shrimp Rolls. While generous with shrimp, flavorless and unseasoned steamed cabbage was the bulk of the roll. The wrapper, however, is where this app really went off the rails. Thick, tough and bland sheets of dough were four layers thick at some points. Hats off for providing authentic mustard when requested, it was needed to bring flavor to our entrees as well. Mustard aside, the Shrimp Rolls were an embarrassment to the kitchen. We were seeking basic and uncomplicated Chinese fare, a relative rarity for us. Ordered for sharing were Pork Lo Mein and Jumbo Shrimp In Lobster Sauce; both were flavorless, unspired and cooked with the passion and attention of a cheap takeout joint. The phrase "totally lacking unami" isn't often heard when discussing Asian food, but certainly applied to these dishes. To their credit, the shrimp were large, relatively plentiful and properly cooked. Offsetting this was a very watery, unseasoned lobster sauce. The lo mein was also lacking in ginger, garlic, scallion, adequate quantities of roast pork or adequate seasoning. Where large portion size was a hallmark of the "old" Chen's 22, the current standard is barely adequate. While I won't say that this dinner didn't 'hit-the-spot' on a night when we were seeking simplicity, at $20/person there was little value for the money. I hope that the new ownership, and in particular, the kitchen staff can find their footing. For the present time we would be reluctant to return to Chen's 22 anytime soon. read more

I've had it with these "lunch combo special" dorks selling me rotten, spoiled, disgusting and dangerous, slimy wonton soup. I didn't call them back upon discovering this returning home to do anything other than caution them from causing anyone else any sickness or distress for attempting to do business with them. That's fair enough, right? Their reply "no." "What? I'm telling you from a twenty-year restaurant employee with a sommelier certification that your soup is spoiled." I said. "The wonton? Or the soup?" They respond. This place is just lost. And again, as I'm gonna keep saying about these places that don't even speak about offering a refund at all, much less an apology or any admission of error or fault. These places are operating with the perspective that they CAN NOT AFFORD TO LOSE $10! And that is why they can't throw away a garbage rotten spoiled product in the first place. They would rather risk their customer's health than lose TEN FREAKIN DOLLARS. Lunch portion wonton is kind is disappointing. If you want to get a small wonton order it separately if you are getting a Togo order. If not your soup will be in a paper coffee cup. Other then that it is average. read more

I'm going to guess that there's new ownership at Chens. Hadn't stopped by there since before the pandemic, but wanted to get some Thai food and they had always been my "go to" for years. Quality and flavor of all the dishes was below par, and hate to say it, but we threw out about half of the food. (3.5 stars) Years ago, one of the first jobs I ever held was located a few doors down from this longstanding Springfield institution, and I would sometimes head over on lunch breaks. Since then, Chen's has added Japanese and Thai offerings to its repertoire, but its Chinese dishes remain satisfying if unspectacular. Chen's is not a big restaurant, but it is more spacious than its narrow storefront suggests. Go when it isn't busy, and service is generally on-point. Our group of five hadn't long to wait for hot tea or any of our food. Speaking of the food, they execute competently here (nothing over or undercooked, no missing components, no excesses of grease or salt), but the flavors tend to be a bit muted. Our group went with sweet and sour pork, General Tsao's chicken, a Szechuan beef dish, a Cantonese seafood dish, and New Year's coins (coin-shaped pasta). Everything was several notches better than the run-of-the-mill takeout that is so ubiquitous down south, and the coins were something I haven't encountered elsewhere. Just the same, several of the dishes that were supposed to be spicy definitely could have used more heat. Since Hunan Spring's unfortunate decline, Chen's 22 has emerged by default as a go-to Chinese destination for return visits to New Jersey. The prompt service, balanced menu, and tasty (if toned-down) offerings make that far from a bad thing. read more

The food is terrible. This isnt just geneic Chinese... this is 'we both know you don't care and only want nutrients" bad. Firstly, the food tastes terrible. I had a 'pepper steak' and the first bite I could clearly taste seafood on it. They dont change pans for seafood or beef or whatever. I nearly threw up in my mouth. Secondly, the service was just miserable. I walked in and waited for 3 or so minutes before someone came from the back. I decided to sit at the sushi bar. This is where the story gets funny. To my surprise there was a guy all along on that awkward cut that has a sushi bar. He was literally sitting on the ground or some stool? He never said a word to me despite being 4 feet from him. He was on his dumbass phone the entire time. I could hear the ganea or actions or whatever he was doing. This place is terrible. The food is bad and generic. The service is terrible. I made a gamble here and failed. I regret buying food from these people. Never go here. Ever. read more

Matter has been corrected and they are once again my favorite establishment for Asian cuisine. They are back!!! Apparently they went thru an ownership change but the original owner is still in a "Consultant" capacity to show them the way. My only minor issue with new ownership is that they changed the rice to a thicker grain which I don't really care for - I wish they go back to the original so this is whey I don't patronize them as much as I've done in the past but went there twice this week already and will be going there today for some sushi. Great to have them back at least giving grown up size portions but if they're reading this please go back to the original rice you've been using since I've been going there in 2014. read more

This review is only about the all you can eat sushi. Which was horrible! Literally a joke to call it all you can eat sushi. It is made to order and the amount of fish that is in each roll is miniscule. There is loads of rice in each piece with a tiny tiny tiny bit of fish. The fish was see through it was so thin! The variety offered is decent, but it doesn't matter when you're just eating mountains of rice. We still laugh at how ridiculous this place is after eating there months ago. I hate to give this review, I have never had an issue with them until now and I have been going to them for over 15 yrs. tonight I ordered what I always order shrimp w/ ginger and scallions (so I know exactly what I should be getting) when I picked it up and returned home it was shrimp and broccoli. So I called and they had a driver drop off my correct order, however it was shrimp ginger and tons of onions no scallions in sight. I don't usually complain but if they did not have it I would have been happy to order something else, don't substitute something else. Had to SHARE a knife for most of the meal because our waitress (who we had to basically beg for refills) never came out. No tablecloth for a 4 pm lunch? But tables after us did.. Been ordering from here for 7 years and yes it's a bit pricey, but it blows away all those cookie cutter take out Chinese shops that have pictures of the dishes on the wall/menu. The vegetables are fresh and you can really tell (Chicken wBroccoli, chow mein, etc). I especially like their Singapore Mai Fun dish (curry). I ate in the restaurant years ago, but we do more take out from here that eat in. The decor is average, but definitely clean. The only negative I think is their sushi, which I find is much better at some other spots (Go Sushi on 22). read more

I used to love this place. The twin lobster with garlic sauce used to be "to die for". Now it is below average. My wife thought her sushi which was excellent and filling. The Bosnia rice was good. I'd like to rate this place higher, because the people there were very nice, but unfortunately I can't do it. First off, the food was not very good. The fried rice had no flavor to it, and a few people at our table couldn't even eat their food. We had to wait when we got there because the receptionist was on the phone, and then several times we ran out of water and ran out of rice.
