I always get the same jumbo shrimp fried rice, the small size. It is absolutely delicious. I can taste the smoke and seasoning in the fried rice. It is not too salty just the right amount of soy sauce. I always eat it in my car. I have ordered this staple many times and have no plans to change. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by everything we got! I loved the pork fried rice and the crab rangoons were large. I got a very large side of sweet and sour sauce which was unexpected. The pepper steak was very good, and it had black beans in it. The potstickers were delish! The only thing I wouldn't get again was the egg roll. But otherwise I'll be back! read more

We have been feeling a bit impromptu lately and well, let's just say it has it's price when it comes to being "adventurous" It wasn't the best and it wasn't the worst. Although, the insides of the dumpling/potsticker were a little bit questionable. The joint is small but it also seems a bit unsanitary. I could be wrong but based on previous reviews, it wouldn't be a surprise. Located right next to TJMAXX on the border of Evanston/Skokie. I was starving after a long day of errands and decided to try Hunan Star. My experience can be summed up as eating mediocre Chinese food inside a dirty establishment. It was also quite expensive for what you get. I'm glad I tried it since I have driven past it plenty of times, but I can't imagine ever returning. What can I say about Hunan Star? I can say that is sure is a hidden gem of a Chinese food takeout place when I see one. I've always ended up passing by that place whenever I drove by. I've always thought it looked closed and that I wouldn't get a chance to try them out. One day I just finished shopping at the nearby TJ Max store for a few things when I was "oh it's that Chinese food spot that I always drive by but never got the chance to go to." So I walked on over to go check it out for myself. Luckily it was about 12 noon lunchtime and I was hungry. Upon approaching the restaurant I saw a line out the door with people who are picking up their lunch orders. I was like wow! This place is popping with people. I've also noticed many of the lawn care workers stopped by and got their lunches and happily ate by their trucks alongside their Co workers during the lunch hour. As I went inside and the place as it was described as. A small area with a menu up against the wall illuminated with light. Quite cozy I'd say. I was greeted by a man with glasses who politely asked how can I help you today? I said I'm new here and surprised by the number of people who are picking up your lunch orders. Is there anything you can recommend me for a first timer? The man said right away that their lunch specials are a hit with workers on the go. So I took a menu and started to skim through the lunch specials as I let others pick their orders up. One person told me that he's been ordering from this place for a long time and that he loves how simple and fast the order comes in. I continued to chat with the guy on the register and he tells me that his parents have been serving the community for 35+ years and still going strong to this day. I told him that's awesome. So I finally had my order I ended up ordering the sweet & sour chicken lunch special. It came with fried rice and a egg roll which totaled just about 7-8$ something I can't remember exactly but still not a bad deal for a lunch special. I was impressed by the freshness of the food even for waiting not too long for it to be ready. I asked if they deliver in the Evanston area and he said yes I was like cool I work around there and it's great you can deliver to my work when needed. I made sure I took an extra menu just in case I forget. With simple prices and tasty food specials you can't go wrong with Hunan Star. Ever since that day I've been ordering from them since. My ranting are as follows: 4 *s Ambiance was small yet inviting. You can really tell it's a family owned place knowing that they've been serving the community for a long time. The service was super nice and polite and patient. Beaming with positive vibes. The food was made hot to order. Tasty and filling for the value. My favorites by far are the Governor's Chicken Hot*, Sesame Chicken, Both Sweet n Sour Chicken and Pork versions. And the soup! The Egg Drop Soup is my go to soup second to the Wonton soup and the Hot n Sour soup a 3rd. Their combination fried rice is also a hit to many that like it including myself. So whenever your in need of a quick bite for Chinese food this is the place to get it from. And thank you for being original with your prices unlike other take out spots that changes their prices on and off and the quality also fell off also. Yeah that's right I'm calling you out Ho'Ho's Chinese kitchen! You used to be my go to spot within the Skokie area however I'm glad I found this gem of a takeout spot in Hunan Star. read more

My family has been coming to Hunan Star for over 15 years now, and the food and incredibly friendly service never disappoint. The family that runs it still recognizes me after all these years, even after a few years of not stopping by when I moved away from Skokie. The food is always incredibly fresh and delicious, and I constantly crave it. I will drive in from the city just to pick up an order of the beef fried rice, Mongolian beef, and veggie egg rolls because I haven't found anything nearly as good in my neighborhood. Place is the worst for Chinese food and they try to nickel and dime you on the sauce. I don't eat soy sauce with my fried rice and the lady tried to tell me that if I change sauces like trade for sweet and sour, that's extra. I've never heard of that BS. Their fried rice has gotten real bland. Their crab Rangoon's taste really gross and are over cooked. I always ask for garlic in my fried rice and she charged me $2.00. Never going back. Word to the wise, go to China Gourmet on Clark St. It's my new spot. Fresh food, no hidden charges, and they give you plenty of sauce without charging... everything is made right in front of you, that way you know it's fresh... Bug bye hunan, you suck! read more

We were very impressed with Hunan Star. We are used to Evanston's wide array of Chinese restaurants, but are new-ish to Skokie and wanted to try something closer. This is our new place for Chinese food! The veggie egg rolls were crunchy and packed with veggies. The orange chicken was the best we have ever tasted. Flavorful and juicy. The bbq pork chow mein wasn't what we were expecting, but that's on us. I would do the lo mein next time. Plentiful and the price is right. Give them a try! read more

Well after losing my go to place in my area tried the Hunan star and I got to say it was dang good, we ordered chicken dishes and beef dishes where we got plenty of chicken plenty of beef plenty of vegetables the order was on time and piping hot will be returning I think I just found my go to place. read more

I tend to agree with Karina A.'s review from 10/4/2016. The food we ordered (the other day) wasn't awful but it wasn't worth the money spent either. The following is from an order placed on a weekday afternoon some days back. Ordered a trio of lunch specials (all spicy) including: Governor's chicken (Really sweet, a bit too sweet actually) (If you love General Tso's...) Shrimp Egg foo yuck (First time trying this dish, never again.) Shrimp with garlic sauce. (Tasty sauce) An order of the potstickers previously mentioned in reviews as a "must" and an order of the veggie egg rolls completed my order. If ordering potstickers they warn they're made fresh and can take up to 15 minutes to prepare. The simplest way to spice up any Asian dish is to add a dash of chili powder. Depending on the strength of that powder a lil' more or less can be used. Problem is, not everyone keeps this necessary spice handy. (I've seen it stored in Chinese takeouts, however) Maybe fear of using it or not knowing how much to use. Although they responded that my food would be spicy, spicy it was not. One entree had black chilis which were not spicy. I ate a few and it did nothing. The other two had a small spoon of chili paste tossed into the sauces. (Chili paste is a terrible addition for adding spice because it can alter the flavors of the entree.) Also asked if they could make the fried rice spicy, since another reviewer mentioned everything is fresh. NOPE! Rice is made in advance. When I pressed as to how much in advance...... no reply. I don't want to go calling them "food recyclers" but speaking to the freshness of the rice and quality, it could have been a day or two old. Much of the time in FF (fast food) Chinese take-out eateries there are some food staples that are made in advance because they like to kick out food in ten minutes or less. Regarding fresh rice, if you eat rice often, you can tell which are from that day and what tastes like it's a few days old. When the eatery reheats fried rice they will often steam it back to life. Depending on the amount of water and time, these components will change that dryness / life of the rice. I would bet that the lunch special fried rice is often "dry". (I've been told by other FF Chinese take-outs that a person could request that it be made "fresher" or steamed fresher.) Their egg rolls are pretty bunk. Meat or veg. These things must have been made a month in advance and lack taste. Don't buy them. An unpleasant, old and salty flavor caused me to trash'em. On the other hand, the potstickers had a nice texture and were juicy inside. These pieces were pretty big. Slightly larger than the average fortune cookie. If you're the kind that often eats at FF Chinese take-outs and you live for finding cheap food deals, you'll probably think this is 3-4 star quality. For all the rest of you that know better and have trusted Chinese restaurants that you frequent, don't bother here. Being that I've been around these parts I know Hunan star has been here quite awhile. It's always been a place I knew I would eventually try. After having it, I would bet its the neighbors and local M-F crowd that keep it running. read more
