For the area, very solid Chinese experience. Believe it or not, having lived in the area for close to 20 years, I've never tried this spot. I'm glad that I was craving dumplings and drove past on this particular night. After having driven past forever... I loved how easy it was to navigate online ordering. Straight forward and no tricks. I like that they let you know what time your order will be ready through text. Lots of parking right in front... not the friendliest customer service experience, but, hey.. I was just there to pick up my order. Food was on point. We really enjoyed all of it: Dumplings were tasty with a wonderful dipping sauce that I'd like to put on everything Shrimp toast was crispy/chewy with great flavor Cheese wontons were good The star of the show was my shrimp and eggplant in garlic sauce. Shrimp was huge and perfectly cooked--eggplant cubes were just cooked just right as well--I love their garlic sauce, the only thing is that I could've used more of it to coat the rice. The family was craving Chinese tonight. I normally dont eat Chinese on Mondays because our regular place is closed but one family member was insisting so off we went. We used to do take out quite often from Hunan Wok in Milltown, NJ. We had stopped going there so long ago that I had forgotten why. Tonight I was reminded. The good: to be fair, the food is so darn good. I actually wish it wasn't because the bad things made me say to the family once again, "I'm not ordering from there any more." I kept my order simple with Beef and Broccoli. The sauce was so savory its actually amazing. They cooked the broccoli just like I like it--- it snaps when you bite it and it's crunchy when you chew it. The broccoli tops soak up that sauce and the flavor hits you like a truck. The beef is tender and fresh and has the most wonderful flavor. So what's so bad you ask? The bad: my number one pet peeve in food service is customer interaction. I obviously prefer the Mickey Dees standard service with a smile. But I am also fine with just transactional professionalism. You get neither here. The counter is covered by an angry and disgruntled teenage girl (owner's daughter) who clearly would rather be anywhere else than there taking customer orders. She's rude, obnoxious and acts like whatever you are saying is a great bother to her. The experience includes annoyed hand gestures and my personal favorite--- the eye rolls. After placing the order, she THREW the card reader on the counter. I would normally give someone a second chance, but this is not the first time I witnessed one of her performances. Also, the place now has a very dirty appearance with lots broken stuff. The working fridge is dirty, has missing pieces and is storing unidentifiable items. The second fridge is broken and used for storing stuff. The furniture appears badly chipped and worn. The waiting room is the dining area so you get all this eye candy including a view of a side room that is stuffed with boxes. To summarize, it's a DUMP. Very average Chinese food. I got a chicken noodle soup, a wonton soup, a chicken chow fun, and an egg roll. Three of the four items tasted pretty good. The lone so/so item was the chow fun. It tasted kind of bland and the noodles were congealed. At least it was not a big portion. If I were to order here again I would just stick with the soups. Wow- this was really good! Wife and I both loved the dumplings and the dipping sauce. Scallion pancakes were excellent. Veg lo mein also very tasty. Before I get too far into this, we had take out, it was delivered in a reasonable amount of time, and everything that we ordered was included in the bag. That part of it was all good. My team has unanimously decided to give our experience 2 stars, because truly - meh - we've experienced better. Overall the food was just food. There was nothing special about it that we could find. The sauces were generally overly think and the crab rangoons seemed as if they sat out for a long time. Hate when a go-to goes south and unfortunately that's what's happened here. This place doesn't pretend to be authentic and caters to the clueless Caucasian local crowd of gelatinous glop stopper devourer. With that being said we've been ordering take out here for 8 years. We used to especially dig their roast pork lo mein. The past 3 or 4 occasions have rendered a product bland and mushy. Disappointing to say the very least. The Shrimp chow mein again bland and yearning for sodium, which we applied generously via soy sauce, but still didn't quite cut the egg roll. Boneless dry spare ribs another fail. Egg drop soup another box checked in the bland dept., sooo disappointed. Complacency all too often sets in with these busy takeout joints and I fear that's the recipe to their demise. I called to let them know who I was and after the past 4 occasions how very unhappy we have gotten with their product and that their long history of Americanized Chinese cuisine has gone significantly downhill. Delicious consistency. That's what you get from Hunan. Call at any time of day or night and your order will be ready in exactly 10 minutes. Your order will be correct. The portions will be huge - enough for 2-3 meals. The food is what you might expect - Chicken and Broccolli, General Tso's, egg rolls, etc. There's nothing particularly exotic on Hunan's Bill of Fare. The lady will sound abrupt when she answers the phone. But, that's okay. She happens to be very nice in person. And, while staff members may be short on phone pleasantries, they are long on time management skills. This can be a very high volume business and they deftly manage many orders/customers at the same time. I'd swear everyone who works here is a Six Sigma black belt. Some Hunan success tips: Don't eat your food there. The glum decor is reminiscent of a prison cafeteria. Instead, take your steaming bag of food and enjoy it in the comfort of your home or nearby office. This is purely a take out joint, and certainly never a place you'd bring a date. When you go to pick up the food, give the last four digits of your phone number. That's how they keep track of orders. They don't bother writing down your name. Grab your own packets of sauce. You can have as many as you would like, but they don't put them in the bag for you. You have to do it yourself. Of course, they offer a lunch special. The prices vary, but I got my lunch choice, rice and a soup for $5.80. Pretty good deal. There was more than enough food to satisfy me. This place is right down the street from our house, which makes it even better. The woman at the front counter is always nice and somehow always knows which order is mine, without me even telling her! I pretty much have had a little of everything from shrimp to beef, chicken and an array of appetizers. I don't have a complaint about anything. I prefer white meat chicken, so I make sure to specifically request that if ordering a chicken dish. If you order shrimp and wonder if it's deveined, like I always wonder, it's not. This place gives you huge portions. Yes, the prices are a little steeper than most Chinese Takeout spots, but honestly the amount you get for the price is incredible. My friend and I got takeout, it ran us about $30. Pretty high, right? Well it fed us for THREE DINNERS, plus a late night snack. This place was never great Chinese-American food, but it used to be good enough -- not anymore. Talking strictly takeout. Even when ownership changes, many Chinese takeouts keep the same name and same menu, and it looks like an ownership change a year ago or so is the cause of a drop in food quality. But judging Hunan Wok with all this in mind, it's just worse than before. It's sad to see this as I have been eating there a long time. This used to be our main Chinese place but a few months ago the quality of the food went way down. The pork fried rice was dry and the general Tso's and sesame chicken were undersauced. The egg rolls were super oily. We tried again after that one experience and it was the same. The inside of the restaurant hasn't been remodeled in my memory and it seems a little dirty. Up until about early October, Hunan Wok was our Sunday "watching the race" go to for Chinese food. We had been doing it so long, the girl taking the orders knew what we wanted and sometimes would double check if we switched things up. Then they got bought out. Everyone, from the counter girl to the cooks, were gone. Three women were doing the work that one girl did. While my husband thought the new food was better tasting, what I ordered was horrible. Located 1/2 mile from my house I often walk to Hunan. I like my food as fresh as possible so I never get delivery, and hardly ever call it in . I like to walk in and order. The girl at the front is always smiles and will make anything I order spicy or spicier. She doesn't just take the orders and make it my problem is they screw up. This is one of the places that I go to regularly. The owners and workers are very friendly everytime we go in. I second the opinion of other reviews here. Hunan Wok has been our go to Chinese take-out for years- at least for the past 20 years or so. With some obvious change in ownership/management over the past year or two the food has really gone downhill. My wife had been saying this for months, but I figured it was an "exception" , not the standard. After all after 20 years of take-out, I figured they could be allowed a mistake. But the food we got this past weekend was just gross. We started getting scallion pancakes recently, in this case, they were just sponges for grease lacking any flavor. My old favorites, steamed dumplings, were basically the frozen type you would find at costco. I also feel the need to share my ordering experience, honestly they just seemed overwhelmed whenever I ordered recently. Completely disjointed when trying to take our order over the phone, I've had to have them repeat the order back to me to make sure they get it right. In addition, even after asking how long the wait is show up for pick up (they've had a habit of just hanging up after they get the order) I end up standing around for another 20. Probably the last time we order there, just like any pizza places, plenty of other places in the area to go to who do it better. read more

Quintessential take-out Chinese food. After growing accustomed to the awesome, cheap Chinese food in Jersey City, I realized I've become spoiled. Most of the Chinese in the E. As a high school student, they allowed me to order from the For-College-Students-Only menu, which gave you a dish over rice and a drink for only $6.
