Came across this food truck while passing through Gold Beach on a road trip. Best fish and chips I've ever had. They have some picnic tables in an open-air parking lot to eat. Very casual, yummy eatery with a friendly owner.

a meal in a styrofoam container

Went to Hunger Paynes for lunch today. The people inside seemed nice and cordial, and I ordered a grilled sandwich from the menu. It was ready without much of a wait at all! The sandwich was pretty good, a little greasy but tasty anyway. I didn't notice until I was almost through with the sandwich that the sandwich had melted the styrofoam box it was served in....to late to take it back, and I figured they must have already known about the styrofoam box problem; I'm sure I wasn't the first person to have a grilled sandwich delivered in a styrofoam box there. What a shame. I attached a picture of the inside of the styrofoam box with an arrow showing where the sandwich had actually melted through and left a hole. You can also see an impression from where the sandwich was in the box. Beware.....

    Seafood combo

Fresh seafood. Owner runs the place. Says she gets seafood fresh at local seafood market. It shows. Melts in your mouth. Fries were good simple with sea salt. Could take it to the next level with garlic or rosemary. It's worth the visit. Located on 101 downtown south of the harbor.

Fish and chips. Fish was nice and flaky. Tartar sauce was perfect. Fries were yummy. Coleslaw was great.

Yummy fish and chips. The nice lady who owns the food truck is quite the character. Love the food and the service!

Wow. The prawns and chips were some of the best I've had. Definitely recommend this spot.

Even though they had a big display of beer tap handles....they seemed to have a very narrow selection of brews when we visited today. My bride ordered the "Fish and Chips" ($26) - which was grilled Cod. She was not partiularly pleased with her selection saying the fish was not flaky (but more chewy). I went with the Wasabi Fish Tacos ($24) - also grilled, and they were good. We thought the place seemed a little on the expensive side, but loved the vibe/atmosphere and would come back again!

This place had a wait when we arrived because they are short staffed (who isn't these days). The business is veteran owned and they were extremely kind and added us to the list knowing we will be seated around closing time. The tuna melt blew me away! If we are ever in the area, I will be returning for this! The fish and chips were light, flaky, crunch and delicious as well. A tiny more salt and this would be the ideal receipe! I throughly enjoyed the side salad as well. It had a hint of bitterness (in thinking from the finely chopped kale) and the vinegar made it so I didn't need to add the ranch dressing. It was perfect! I would skip the garlic fries. We sat outdoors on their cute patio type enclosure. It was a little chilly but we had our sweaters! Overall, great stop and I felt good supporting a local small business as well!

I got a beer and the fish open face sandwich with sweet potato fries. The fries were nothing special. I think the sandwich would be great with the option to change the cheese type. I would love to try it with swiss cheese. The sandwich was good and tasted fresh very little seasoning so you really got to taste the fish and it was yummy. Nice big bathroom that was clean. View was not really anything good and the windows were dirty from the salt air.

Upon arriving the parking lot everything smelled pretty good, which was great. We checked in and waited over 30 minutes to be seated, busy night no reservation totally understandable. Once seated we sat there for almost another 40 minutes before a waitress would even look our way. I understand things get busy but walking past a table that has been waiting without even an acknowledgment, offer for a drink, or even a comment of "we'll be right with you" was definitely disappointing. Like I mentioned earlier, I usually love supporting small restaurants. And the food smelled good so we stayed waiting. We finally order our food, by then another half hour has passed before we get our food, which was overall underwhelming. I ordered a filet mignon which honestly seemed more like a sirloin. The crust and cook on it was good, although the flavor was lacking. I enjoyed their vegetables and mash potatoes far more than the steak itself. My partner ordered a prime rib whose only saving grace was the au jus it was served with. Overall, we felt very disappointed with the service. The food was okay but I personally wouldn't return considering the price point.

Our waitress seemed…read moreirritated with us from the start, and mind you all we had done was sit at the table she instructed us to sit at. For context, I've been a waitress on the coast for nearly 10 years, so I'm usually very mindful of not making a server's job harder, but this felt different. When we ordered, she came across as genuinely annoyed. Did she check on things like coffee? Yes, but with a look of annoyance that made the whole interaction uncomfortable. The food itself was mediocre at best. The gravy was meh, though the chicken fried steak was decent. The "hash browns," however, were not traditional hash browns, they were more like oven roasted potatoes smashed on the grill, which was disappointing if you're expecting the classic version. The pricing was another surprise. I work at a higher end restaurant, and their brunch prices are comparable to what we paid here, which says a lot, considering this is supposed to be a basic diner experience. When our food was dropped off, we were told the toast would be "just a minute." No problem, but when it finally arrived, it was completely cold, with unmelted "butter" that had little to no flavor. And as someone who grew up eating margarine and then transitioning to butter, I knew that this was margarine. My boyfriend who has never had margarine didn't understand why his butter didn't "taste like anything". Also worth noting, my partner ordered a side of sausage links, four small links for $9, yup your read that right, $9 dollars for a side of sausage. Overall, the service felt hostile with a fake mask, the food was mediocre, and the pricing didn't match the experience. As a person who was raised here on the coast and thought to "experience double d's diner again" since it has been a few years, I won't be returning.
