Me and my boyfriend are from out of town and were looking forward to a clam chowder bread bowl. We talked about it the whole drive up. What we got was the most underwhelming mush. We had to add so much seasoning and hot sauce to make it edible and it was blander than hell. My boyfriend didn't have a single piece of clam in his bowl and we both thought it smelled a little fishy, he genuinely thought his had fish instead of clams. Most of my clams were sandier than hell, yes I know that comes with eating seafood sometimes but it was overwhelmingly sandy. 2 hours after we ate, both of us are glued to the toilet. OMG...You call that a shrimp cocktail? My husband and I just moved from San Diego (a big seafood town) and were checking out Gold Beach last weekend. We had lunch here. Our waitress started off very nice. I ordered an iced tea. For my meal, I ordered a bowl of clam chowder and a shrimp cocktail. The "shrimp cocktail" arrived in a glass not much larger than a shot glass. It was filled 3/4 full with lettuce and on the top there were mini shrimp (they come in a can). It was $10.00! I called over the waitress. I told her this "shrimp cocktail" was not what I was expecting. She left and came back and said her manager would not be removing this item from our bill. Really? What? A lady then came over not identifying herself (supposedly the manager) and asked what was wrong. I told her this is not a shrimp cocktail. I explained a shrimp cocktail is several medium sized shrimp. She proceeded to tell me it is a shrimp cocktail and that I ordered the wrong thing. She continued to argue with me. I told her I didn't want it and that I would like the one with the larger shrimp. It came (delivered by the same lady who was supposedly the manager) and it was fine. After the shrimp incident, the waitress never returned to our table. She walked by several times, never looking over at us. I needed a refill on my iced tea but never got it because I couldn't get her attention. We waited for the check for a few minutes, but I was so pissed by the shitty service, arguing with the "manager", crappy food and being ignored, that my husband and I got up and went to the front of the restaurant where the cash register was. I demanded to pay the bill. The lady at the register was very nice and apologized for the bad experience we had. She also said the lady claiming to be the manager wasn't. Of course, I left no tip!!! Homestyle fare in a cozy place, some tables have a view of the river, the booths without a view are fine too. Service was friendly and very efficient considering they were busy. The fish and chips, were very good, flaky white fish in a panko style crispy batter. Fries were basic but cooked right. Coleslaw was great. Chicken fried chicken was good, fried perfectly and not dried out. Prices are very good for the portions. Would have been 4 stars but the table tops are varnished incorrectly, so they are permanently sticky which of course gives it a dirty feel to it. The paper napkins literally stick to the tables. If they fix that problem, it's a 4 star rating for me, good for a small town with limited choices for dinner. read more

We really wanted a good place in Gold Beach for fresh seafood. It was ok but was not what we were hoping for. Every dish was deep fried. Yes, it says that on the menu but there weren't many choices for other preparations. Our server was lovely and we gave her a hearty tip, the view was great, and we all liked the relaxed atmosphere. I got the Rockfish Porter fish and chips special. The fish was fresh, the batter a bit thick but was overpriced for just under 20$. This was a great average cafe on the mouth of the Rogue River going into the Pacific. Lots of offerings on the menu. We had Calamari Steak and Bread Bowl Clam Chowder. Both were very good. The Calamari Steak was cooked perfectly. The chowder bread bowl was just right with lots of clams. Plenty of parking, so that's a plus Typical touristy coastal restaurant with OK food in reasonable quantity and reasonable prices (translation: not a gourmet destination, but good if you're hungry). Service was a bit on the slow side, but cheerful. Since restaurant choices in the area are limited, we'd probably come back again -- and keep our expectations in check. read more

We love the Porthole. Burgers and fries are delicious. I also love their club sandwich. Their thousand island is homemade and so good for dipping your fries in. On our way through town in Nov 2025 our favorite Gold Beach restaurant was closed for remodeling, so we decided to try the Port Hole Cafe. It has a nice location along the Rogue River, plenty of seating, and great service. It was all really good! We had the clam chowder, their special (halibut), and a tuna melt. The food was delicious, everything tasted fresh. We even tried the carrot cake for dessert; it was excellent. We'd definitely eat here again. read more

We were staying in gold beach for the week and pick the Port Hole fore dinner one night, we found the dinning experience to be very pleasant. We started off with oyster shooters, and we had the fish and chips. The shooters were great and the fish and chips were fresh and the chips were crisp and the coleslaw was good. I wouldn't label this restaurant family friendly. After a very long drive today (we are on a road trip) my four year old started to have a meltdown over something trivial while we were eating. My husband and I were actively working on getting her calmed down (she is normally extremely well behaved in restaurants-like we consistently have people stop by our table to say how well behaved she is when we eat out- so this was kind of new territory for us). The manager I believe came over to our table and rudely hissed at us that she needed to be removed until she calmed down. I had already been getting prepared to remove her myself but it was cold outside and I was exhausted and hungry and trying to avoid it. While I am very conscious about affecting those around me, almost everyone around us also had children and the way we were spoken to was as if she was rolling around on the ground screaming and throwing things and we were just sitting there ignoring it. There was a much nicer way she could have asked us that if people were in fact complaining - of course I removed her at that point and sat outside with her while my husband packed us up as obviously we weren't going to continue to eat there after that exchange. In addition to that the service before that wasn't very good and the food was mediocre and expensive. Should have trusted the bad reviews because I agree with them about service and food quality. 1 star granted because the Bloody Mary was good. read more

We found this restaurant on our drive from Klamath, Ca to Eugene, OR. Great spot to stop for lunch. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They have a large menu with a lot of choices. The view is also beautiful overlooking the Rogue River at Gold Beach. Recommend the clam chowder in a bread bowl. Hit the spot! And the fried cheese curds were a great appetizer to share. read more

What a joke--this place is absolutely NOT family friendly. Stopped for dinner after a long day of driving. Our four year old got worked up over something and had a bit of a meltdown. As any parent knows this is never fun for anyone and embarrassing enough. Then the manager (said she was the owner... hard to believe) came over and told us we needed to take her out of the restaurant. This isn't fine dining, nor was she making a huge scene... it was a crying kid. My wife took her out while I packed up our food and other kid and hightailed it out of there. On to the rest of the review, as it would've been at best 2 stars without that. The clam chowder was lukewarm and chewy. All the food came out together (except the kids meals, which arrived last). I ordered the Chinese chicken salad; came out dry (server kept asking what dressing I wanted, I said "the one on the menu sounds perfect"), maybe two fried chicken strips since it seems all they can do here is throw things in a deep fryer, and some lettuce and chunks of pineapple. Truly weird. Fried shrimp was tasteless. Best thing any of us got were the kids' tater tots. The server had no idea what was going on--made us repeat our order multiple times, sequenced everything wrong, etc. Don't really blame him, think he was just new. It's more the incompetent boss. Also, they charge a 3% credit card surcharge (fine I guess) and $1 per box for to go boxes, which they'll still try to charge you even if they kick you out before you can eat your food.
