Dinner in Portland, Oregon... For my niece's birthday dinner, we chose Hungry Dumpling House because - in general - dumplings symbolize money or financial wealth in Asian culture. Don't you think some dumplings look like money bags or ingots? I ordered the dumpling soup (wonton soup). It came with some veggies and comforting broth. Each dumpling had a shrimp in it! We also got a side of chive and pork dumplings to share... yummy! Service was efficient and friendly! The interior was clean, neat, and bright! We appreciated the free, shared parking! It was a wonderful birthday meal for my niece... she had noodles, too, for long life!

Loved this restaurant! We came on a lovely day and they had the windows open which made for a nice meal. It was small but cute! The service was great - couldn't have asked for better. Staff was friendly and the food came out super quick. Everything we had (appetizer, entree, dessert) was delicious!

Surprised and delighted as they exceeded expectations. Chive and pork pan seared dumplings - sure I've had better, but these are worthy nevertheless. Cucumber salad - good flavor (my friend ordered without MSG, so would have been even better), and portion was ample. Popcorn chicken - spice is almost Indian-like, nice a crisp pieces that are just the right size, ample portion. Sliced (boneless) fish - the winner of our meal. Choice of four different varieties, we opted for sweet and sour and the battered salt and pepper. Crisp and tender middle. So good. Sangria - decent, pricy for the portion. There's usually parking in the lot or nearby. A few tables were un-bussed, service was quick and friendly.

First time ordering from the Hungry Dumpling. We had the food delivered so I cannot speak to the friendliness of the staff or cleanliness of the restaurant. We ordered the crispy spring roll, cabbage pork pan seared dumplings, shui mai, pork xlb, chow mein with beef and the salted egg yolk wings. The spring rolls and dumplings all had the flavors and textures I was hoping for. The chow mein was pretty good but on the greasy side. The salted egg yolk wings were exceptional! Crispy outside with juicy tender meat inside We'd definitely return

It is.........just okay . The beef , in my last soup , was over marinated to the point of being very mushy . Dumplings are nothing that would stand out from any other dumpling in any place that serves dumplings . The only reason I showed up a second time was to substantiate my review for this place . Sad , but you have competition .

We love this wonderful place! We've eaten here 4 times in the past few months, and food was consistently top-notch. Also, our server, Emily is so kind and sweet. I think she is the only server, and works the floor with competence and patience. She mentioned wanting to hire another server so she could have 2 days off. I hope she finds someone and trains them to be as skilled as her! Highly recommended: Spicy Eggplants Boiled Pork & Cabbage Dumplings Spicy Popcorn Chicken Salty Egg Fried Wings Pickled Mustard Green Rice Noodle Soup The decor is modern and clean. Overall, this is a great place to have yummy food and receive great service!!!

Yummy, yum, yum, yummy, YUM! I checked out Hungry Dumpling on Hawthorne for the first time this evening, and I was impressed overall. I arrived at 6 PM on a Thursday and was promptly seated, but did notice the restaurant filled up rather quickly during my visit. In the fall and winter, seating may be an issue. However, I noticed there is ample outdoor seating available - so that will help when we have more agreeable weather. The folks at the table next to me and my husband ordered scalion pancakes and soup dumplings, which they said were fantastic, so we followed suit. The scallion pancakes were a bit greasy, and the soup dumplings were a little too thick and doughy for my liking. However, the dumplings weren't overly salty and they were served piping hot! We also ordered wontons in chili oil (the source of all the YUMs in my opening paragraph) which were so delicious I may dream about them tonight. The cucumber salad was super delish, but beware of the garlic breath that may follow. We also ordered chive dumplings which seemed a little bland, but dipping them in the liquid from the wonton dish made them more agreeable. There seem to be a lot of dumpling houses opening in the Portland metro area, which is great. And each one seems to have it's own set of pros/cons. Hungry Dumpling House works great for me because it's near my home, has easy parking, and appears to be pretty straightforward without all of the fanfare found in some of the other restaurants. I'm too old, fat and tired to wait in line for an hour before I eat! (That line made me chuckle) Everyone seemed to be ordering the fried salted egg chicken wings, but I wasn't in the mood for wings. I'll certainly put them at the top of my list next time I visit. I'll also try the shumai as it wasn't available this evening. All in all, this was a super enjoyable visit and I can't wait to come back and try more of their dishes.

Our favourite was the green beans! Great flavour dumplings!

The Green beans are lovely and would come back just for those! The dumplings were also yummy!

Amazing food. We liked the pork XLB better than the pork and crab, but they were both great. The string beans were amazing as well.

Every dish we ordered was off-the-charts delicious. We had: * Garlic dry green beans * Szechuan Dan Dan noodles * Beef dry pot * Pork soup dumplings I wouldn't change a single thing--everything was perfectly seasoned, full of flavor, and served fresh and hot. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting, great for a relaxed night out. If you're even thinking about trying this place, stop thinking and just go. Duck House is now officially at the top of my dining list!

The fried rice's flavor was pretty muted..I prefer a little saltiness in my fried rice and it honestly had barely any salt? It tasted like plain rice with a little soy sauce and maybe oil flavor? Just not very aromantic in general.. I disliked the Mandarin Crispy Chicken the most as I had an issue with the breading. It was very thick and each bite felt more breading than chicken..The flavor of the sauce was good but with how thick the breading was, the inside of the chicken had no flavor at all once I bit in.. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items, but I don't think I'll be back to try any others at least for now. It was a Friday night so it was busy but I'll say service was good and we had a minimal wait time!

The smashed cucumber salad was super refreshing -- lots of garlic, crunchy, and exactly what you want after hours in the car. The green onion pancakes came out crispy and satisfying, but my favorite was the wood ear mushroom. They did something to it that made it insanely umami and savory, like a dish you keep thinking about later. The fried rice was solid and full of flavor, and you could tell the kitchen cared. The dining room was pretty empty when we went, so maybe it's newer or underrated, which feels unfair because the food deserves more people. Parking around there is kind of a hassle and the neighborhood isn't the prettiest, but this is a definite stop for me next time I'm in Portland.

Shoutout to everyone still working on Thanksgiving Day! Because of hardworking folks like you,…read morepeople who don't celebrate holidays like me can still eat out. I'm super grateful. Before coming, I did my homework and checked reviews on Chinese review website. The opinions were kinda extreme, some said it was terrible, others said it was amazing. Since it was only a 1 minute walk from my hotel and actually open on Thanksgiving, I went for it. I ordered jalapeño beef 小炒牛肉, veggie chow mein 蔬菜炒面, and string beans 干煸四季豆. The beef came out first, and the first bite surprised me. It didn't taste like the jalapeño beef from other Sichuan restaurants. It tasted exactly like Cantonese beef with gailan, but with green bell peppers instead. Instead of tingly spicy, it had a subtle sweetness. If you're Cantonese, you probably know exactly what I mean. The veggie chow mein was good and reminded me of late night street noodles in Guangzhou, and it also had a slightly sweet touch. The string beans were good too, and didn't have any sweetness. There was some savory minced pork in it. If you're not a strict vegetarian and don't mind a little meat in the dish as long as you only eat the veggie part, go for this one, it was flavorful. While having dinner, I overheard Cantonese in the kitchen between the chef and staff, and ahhh, that explains why I tasted the Cantonese flavor in my dishes! It also explains the two types of extreme reviews. So let me be honest, if you come here expecting the Sichuan/Hu'nan version of stir-fried beef with a strong spicy profile, you might be disappointed. But for me, it was honestly a lucky hit. I did see some Sichuan spicy dishes on the menu, but I didn't order them, so I can't say if they're authentic. But based on what I ordered tonight, I was happy with everything.

The place was full of hungry locals and tourists but was uncustomarily quiet and calm. From the hostess that seated us, to the waitress and servers, all staff and management were extremely polite, positive and helpful. We were starving. So we ordered 3 entrees and side of Dry-fried String beans. The Green Beans were cooked perfectly and the serving size was generous! One of our new favorites is the Mongolian Chicken. Is not a spicy Chinese food dish but the moist chicken and seasonings produced a yummy & comfort food level dish! As usual, the lightly battered & deveined Butterfly prepared Salt & Pepper Shrimp was mouthwatering, with every bite. As the last entree to be served. The ten Chicken & Vegetable Dumplings were fresh and flavorful. Needless to say, with only 2 patrons eating lunch with 3 heaping entrees plus Dry-fried String beans and white rice - we took home 2 more meals worth of Chinese food leftovers. Typically at most Chinese restaurants, especially fried dishes, you'll see a pool of oil at the bottom of the dish. He is always happy to pack your food for you to go if you have leftovers as well, which is a lovely gesture. They have very cute decorations inside, from lucky cats with fortune cookies in their mouths, or a painted wall with a Panda cooking delicious food. I'd steer clear from their soup dishes, most of them lack flavor. I highly recommend their Chopped Pepper Fish and their Jade Tofu items though. Very flavorful and not very heavy!
