A nice pivot from the usual Chinese- American menu here, though you'll find a few usual suspects pop up (Chow Mein, etc). Dumplings rule here, obviously, and it's kinda fun to choose from all of the many options. Problem is you're sitting in a strangely cafeteria-like setting with atrocious lighting. At least they made an effort with some of the window seating, with a couple of booths and regular tables. Still, I can't bitch about the service; they were slammed on a Friday night but somehow managed to seat us in a completely full restaurant and got to us gracefully, fairly quickly and with a smile, and that part made it all tolerable. Our Salt n pepper tofu came out super hot, crispy and super tasty, and the pan-seared chicken dumplings were just awesome, paired with ginger, garlic and scallions inside. If you're not sitting under the harsh LED lighting I guess it's not too bad, but a date night place this is not. Although I'd recommend the dumplings, ambiance matters too. Dinner in Portland, Oregon... For my niece's birthday dinner, we chose Hungry Dumpling House because - in general - dumplings symbolize money or financial wealth in Asian culture. Don't you think some dumplings look like money bags or ingots? I ordered the dumpling soup (wonton soup). It came with some veggies and comforting broth. Each dumpling had a shrimp in it! Definitely recommend the cabbage and scallion dumplings (seared) and the katsu currey chicken. Concistent and delicious. Restaurant is small. The staff here were very kind. There wasn't anyone in the space when I went. As soon as they noticed I wanted to dine in, they greeted me warmly and were helpful when I asked for recommendations. The service honestly was the highlight of my experience. I tried the fried mushroom wontons with chili oil and scallions based on a recommendation. Unfortunately, they didn't have much flavor and were very much drenched in oil where you couldn't taste anything else, I couldn't taste the chili oil or scallions or spice. They tasted more like frozen fried wontons you could buy from a store, fried and thrown in red oil. The cucumber salad, however, was really good -- fresh, flavorful, with a strong garlic vinegar profile. I enjoyed the balance of flavors a lot. My only minor note is that the cucumbers could've been cut a little smaller to soak up the flavor , but I e joyed it overall. The biggest miss for me was the fried crab sticks. I'm assuming they were imitation crab, but the texture and flavor really threw me off. They were very bright pink, sticky, mushy, and came with a pink sauce that didn't work for me personally. I was expecting either real crab or at least good quality imitation crab. But it was highlighter bright pink. We love this wonderful place! We've eaten here 4 times in the past few months, and food was consistently top-notch. Also, our server, Emily is so kind and sweet. I think she is the only server, and works the floor with competence and patience. She mentioned wanting to hire another server so she could have 2 days off. Been here twice now, once around 3pm on a Saturday with plenty of open tables and second time around 8pm Friday with 1-2 open tables. For drinks I've tried the lychee sangria and summer green. The lychee sangria tastes just like lychee syrup! but with carbonation. The summer green wasn't as good as I hoped it would be as the lime was too overpowering. I've tried the cabbage pork pan-seared dumplings, chive pork pan-seared and steamed dumplings, crab & pork xlb, salted egg yolk wings, sauteed string beans, spicy popcorn chicken, and wonton in chili oil. The chives in the chive pork pan-seared dumpling really stood out and is a dish I would order again as I have not encountered it anywhere else. Tried it in steam form the second time but it did not stand out as much. Both the pan-seared and steamed dumplings were juicier at the most recent visit. The crab & pork xlb was more like a steamed dumpling with lack of soup. Salted egg yolk wings were huge but lacking in flavor. The spicy popcorn chicken was a little too salty but balanced well with the more bland sauteed string beans. I get the wonton chili oil anytime it is offered but unfortunately this one does not compare to DTF (although I have yet to find one that does). I really liked the taste of their chili oil, although I would suggest more chili. Overall, It is a little better than Dough Zone, not as good as DTF but a decent alternative to both. read more

Yummy, yum, yum, yummy, YUM! I checked out Hungry Dumpling on Hawthorne for the first time this evening, and I was impressed overall. I arrived at 6 PM on a Thursday and was promptly seated, but did notice the restaurant filled up rather quickly during my visit. In the fall and winter, seating may be an issue. However, I noticed there is ample outdoor seating available - so that will help when we have more agreeable weather. The folks at the table next to me and my husband ordered scalion pancakes and soup dumplings, which they said were fantastic, so we followed suit. The scallion pancakes were a bit greasy, and the soup dumplings were a little too thick and doughy for my liking. However, the dumplings weren't overly salty and they were served piping hot! We also ordered wontons in chili oil (the source of all the YUMs in my opening paragraph) which were so delicious I may dream about them tonight. The cucumber salad was super delish, but beware of the garlic breath that may follow. We also ordered chive dumplings which seemed a little bland, but dipping them in the liquid from the wonton dish made them more agreeable. There seem to be a lot of dumpling houses opening in the Portland metro area, which is great. And each one seems to have it's own set of pros/cons. Hungry Dumpling House works great for me because it's near my home, has easy parking, and appears to be pretty straightforward without all of the fanfare found in some of the other restaurants. I'm too old, fat and tired to wait in line for an hour before I eat! (That line made me chuckle) Everyone seemed to be ordering the fried salted egg chicken wings, but I wasn't in the mood for wings. I'll certainly put them at the top of my list next time I visit. I'll also try the shumai as it wasn't available this evening. Overall a great spot if you're in the area! My party and I ended up here as the original plan fell through. Service was average. Our waitress was kind and patient as we were deciding on what to order. We ordered about 6 things on the menu and my personal favorites were the chicken chow mein, popcorn chicken, chive and pork pan fried dumplings, and the green beans. We also ordered the cucumber salad (would pass on these as it had too much of a vinegar taste), the crab and pork XLB (skin was ripped on most of them, so no soup) and the wonton dumplings in chili oil (too much of a vinegar taste as well). Great new spot to grab dumplings in town! Love that they actually have a parking lot they share with other businesses since parking in the area can be tough. We came a little before dinner with a larger group and didn't have an issue getting seated but as the night got later there were definitely more groups and phone orders so come early to beat the rush. If you dine in I would say order all items at the same time as they are a little slower paced as they are figuring things out. What we tried - Pork XLB (solid - would love if they paired it with some ginger to pair with the black vinegar) - Sauteed String Beans (would get these again) - Chive pork fried dumpling (would get these again) - Shumai (would probs pass on these next time) - Tan Tan Noodle (great numbing spice if you enjoy that) - Salted Egg Yolk Wing (fan favorite for the table and something new that you don't really see) - Mapo Tofu (no meat but was also a favorite for the table) - Spicy Crispy Shrimp (nice spices paired but could probs pass on this one next time as it was a little salty for my liking) I would say order the same amount or more when coming with a larger group. We came with a group of 6 and almost finished everything. Overall, service was attentive and flavors were good. I like that they have a good mix of your standard dumpling menu but with some new items unique to their restaurant. It's hard for me to recommend this place. My wife and I stopped by here to grab a quick bite. The host was very polite and sat us quickly. We ordered 1x pork xlb and 1x crab xlb. They tasted fine, but not exemplary. The dumpling skins were really thick and I couldn't taste the crab. It seemed like it took forever for our small order to come out. It was not busy when we were there (around the time they opened). For what it's worth, I think it's a great neighborhood spot. But we live in Beaverton. Overall there was a lack of flavor in every dish and I spent time wondering if I got the wrong dish. It was our first time! 5/5-Prompt and sufficient service. 5/5-Beside typical street parking, they have their own parking lot corner shared with few other businesses on the corner of Hawthorn and 41st Ave. 4/5-Provides toilet seat covers. The woman restroom has only one stall. However there an exterior door but your can't lock from within so people can still access the sink while the stall is used and locked by a stranger. It's odd arrangement. 3/5-Overall food quality. Everything was on the salty side for me. My friend said she liked everything. This is clearly the case of individual preference on the salty scale. We ordered and shared everything. Our total bill was $62 before tip. -Pot of hot green tea: we didn't ask for recipe so could remember how much. I asked what's kind of green tea and the staff told me it's green tea so I didn't press it. It was okay to washed away the salty taste in my mouth in between dishes, no specific flavor nor distinct taste of any kind. -Crispy Scallion Pancake, $10: definitely crispy, yet on the greasy side, flavor was alright. I would have like more scallion on it. -Sautéed String Beans with minced ground pork, $15: fresh and crunchy with every bite which I liked. It was way too salty to enjoy by itself so I had to pair it with scallion pancake and steamed chive pork dumplings. -Chive Pork Steam Dumplings (8) $14.00: came with a good amount of chive which I loved. -Shui Mai(4), $7.50: mixed of chopped pork, shrimp, and black mushroom. It was moist. -Chicken Pan-Seared Dumplings (8). $13.00: came with chopped cabbage, topped with scallion and toasted black and white sesame seeds. Again it was okay. I just love when an amazing new place moves into the neighborhood. But I have to say - I'd even make a drive (or, honestly, order delivery) from Hungry Dumpling. My personal favorite is the Katsu Chicken Curry. I've had it twice now and it doesn't disappoint. The best I've had since my time in London. A small spot, family run (at least from what I can tell). Love the atmosphere. The service was great, pretty good parking if you don't live close like me. What's not to love? Gotta check out the new spots. read more

A small family owned dumpling spot located on Hawthorne. Items take a while to cook so don't expect super rushed service, the table set ups are pretty mix and service was super attentive. Pork and chive dumplings 3/5: these were steamed and very light in flavor, I suggest making a vinegar dipping sauce with soysauce and chili. I think for what they were it was okay, but I probably wouldn't order this again. Fried calamari 4/5: some pieces were a bit dry but overall this was a solid dish. Not too greasy but I think for the cost I likely can't justify it again. Overall I likely will skip this place in the future and just stick to regular dimsum places with full cart service. read more

We stumbled by this place last week for lunch as we were looking for a different place. The interior is nice, and they had the side doors that go up, which gave it that open feeling. The service was friendly as our waitress checked up on us to make sure everything was OK. The items we ordered were pretty good (since a handful of items we wanted were out). We ended up getting some steamed pork dumplings, pan seared chicken dumplings, salted egg yolk wings, and the devil mala noodles. The salted egg yolk wings were the winner as it's a unique flavor that they were able to incorporate well for the wings. The devil mala soup had a nice flavor to it. Crab & Pork Soup Dumpling and Chive & Pork Pan-Fried Dumpling: The dumpling filling lacked flavor for my taste, and the wrapper was thicker and chewier than I prefer. Chili Wonton: Like the dumplings, this dish was also underwhelming. Despite being in chili oil, it didn't deliver the bold flavors I was hoping for. I found this dish particularly disappointing. Honey Walnut Shrimp: This was one of the better dishes, but the sauce was too heavy on the mayonnaise for my liking. I wouldn't order it again. Salted Egg Fried Wings: By far, the standout dish. The wings were perfectly cooked--crispy on the outside, tender on the inside--and I loved the salted egg sauce. I just wish there had been more of it on the side! Overall, while the service was decent, I wouldn't return. That said, the environment is clean and pleasant, though the space can get crowded since it's not very large. read more
