When you go to spend money at a sit down restaurant, one thing you expect to be is welcomed and appreciated as a guest in their establishment. So when we visited the new Sumo Sushi in Delta Park for the first time, we were pleasantly surprised to read the sign outside that said, "No tipping! A standard 12% service charge is applied to every order." Not a bad deal, as a tip usually comes in at about 18-20% these days. We were seated quickly and given the rundown by the Gen Z hostess. Which slowly started to feel more like rules laid down by a stern lunchroom lady at a school cafeteria... everyone at a table were REQUIRED to order the same plan...either the $19.99 silver plan or the $23.95 gold plan. Even if one of us (me!) doesn't even like sushi and was going to have only the simplest vegetarian rolls. Then, we were warned that although we could order as much as we wanted, we WOULD be charged for anything left over. And under NO CIRCUMSTANCE could we take ANYthing home. Then, we were told we could ONLY order through their QR code on an app. Um. What if we didn't HAVE phones with us? Which we didn't, but thank goodness we had brought our Gen Z son with us who can figure out this kind of thing. But.... what WOULD happen if, say, an elderly couple came in and wasn't that up with smartphones...or able to see tiny app writing very well? Seems like a very exclusionary practice. So, we put our order in and then went to the buffet line for the non sushi food. That part was great! Loved all the options! Personally, I wish there had been an option to JUST do the buffet line and skip the sushi. One disappointment - the drinks. There was NO boba tea that day, only a selection of 3 juice drinks that weren't that tasty. Online I had read that they were supposed to include boba tea. Our sushi arrived, delivered by a cute robot. Although it wasn't made clear that more of our order was to arrive later, and of course we forgot exactly what we ordered or how much. We flagged down a human who told us that yes, more was coming, which it did. The sushi was fine, Husband and Son said it was of supermarket quality. Toward the end, when we could not eat anymore, surprise.... one forgotten dish finally showed up. I mean, literally we were almost getting up to go. We were puzzled and had to flag down a human again to ask about it and were assured that yes, that was one we had ordered. Well NOW what were we going to do, having had the fear of God put into us about getting charged for leftover food?? Husband then offered it up to another table, who accepted it. But uh oh. This did NOT get by Gen Z hostess, who rushed over to admonish him saying that giving AWAY food was ALSO not allowed. OK. Well, what were our other options for this dish that was delivered super late, after we had already filled up on buffet food after we thought the sushi was done??? Jeez! She graciously said she would not charge us THIS time but..... (eyeroll) So, when paying at the checkout desk terminal, a tip screen DID come up - huh? I thought there was no tipping necessary here? Conveniently preselected at the 18% level, too, all while Gen Z hostess looked on. I always hate this guilt-tripping restaurants do these days, but I felt NO qualms DE-selecting it and putting in zero. Because what in the world would I be tipping for? We had to order through our own means, and a robot delivered the food. I'm not even sure what the 12% "service fee" was supposed to cover. Portland restaurants are required to pay their staff at least $16.80 an hour. In conclusion, food was good, and it's a pretty good price if you can eat a lot. It was nice to see a new place open up in this area that has been somewhat rundown for years now, so I do hope they succeed. But, due to the unwelcoming customer service and constantly being made to feel like we're cheaters, we probably won't be back for a long time. read more

After a long hike, this is the spot to stop for dinner. My friend and I came here expecting a normal sushi restaurant and had absolutely no idea it was all you can eat sushi and a buffet. We were completely flabbergasted - in the best way possible. It felt like we had hit the jackpot! You can literally see the excitement on my face in the photos. There are so many options that it's almost overwhelming! Our waitress was so helpful and helped us navigate how to order. You order off your phone and scan the QR code. I ordered the $30 tier, but if I could do it again, I'd spend the extra few dollars and get the next tier up (around $35). It's 100% worth it because that's the one that includes the Sumo nigiri you see in Instagram photos. They also have unlimited miso soup, plenty of sushi rolls, hot food, and even dessert. I saw this place recently opened in N Portland and was excited to give it a try. We went at dinner time and bought the gold level package. It didn't disappoint. Highlights: 1. Freshness of food. Fish, shrimp and clams were very fresh in everything we tried. Sashimi, sushi, etc., raw or cooked. 2. Menu variety in the gold package is great. Covers the most popular items of a sushi place, plus a wide range of grill, noodle, snacks, etc. 3. The self serving buffet bar is surprisingly good. Great variety, great quality. I always know the quality of food by looking at the buffet part's fruit and salad. If they look fresh and perky that means everything is well cared for and not sitting there for a long time. Freshness is key! 4. Staff were friendly and helpful when I had questions. 5. Generous portions. Though the rule is 15 orders per 15minutes, we were filled after 3 rounds. They did not cheap down on their items' sizes including sashimi cuts. They were great! But pace yourself, no rush, 90 minutes is definitely enough time even for big eaters. Don't waste food, as that will be charged extra at almost $13/lb. 6. First timer discount and bday discount makes the price even greater. 7. Fun dining environment, and robotic delivery machines. You'll leave full however the quality of the food was average at best. I got the gold package (upgraded) and was excited to try the various upgrades. My ribeye was way overcooked - very chewy. It was actually really bad - not much flavor, tasted frozen? I felt the quality of sushi was very mid grade and was disappointed because I had read that the sushi here was actually very good. There is a buffet with various offerings. The beef rib was solid; I tried three pieces of orange chicken and it was tepid - odd because I got there at opening and the food had JUST been brought out. In addition to the buffet, I ordered 15 plates of various items to try to get a wide variety of their offerings. I don't know. It was $46 with tip (you don't have to leave a tip because there is a 12% service charge added) but I just didn't think it was worth the hype. The robots are fine, cool gimmick. Service was good, I just felt like the place overall was meh. Lunch (and lunch prices) may be better but I went on a weekend and they only offer dinner prices on the weekends. This restaurant chain just opened a new Delta Park location in an old Sherries restaurant building. The remodel is beautiful and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The whole area is filled with homeless transients who come out especially at night. The Restaurant features two of the rudest female staff I have ever encountered in any restaurant in the Portland Metro area. The older woman running the till asked me if I dyed my beard - incredibly inappropriate and familiar. The younger female greeter/server had a sour disposition and was a really slow and indifferent server. Sushi is all about nuiances of flavors. Their sushi is almost on par with the little plastic boxes of sushi offered by some of the local supermarkets. Everything tastes pretty much the same - bland, underseasoned and poorly made. I rarely leave reviews, but this place was amazing and deserves way more recognition. I got the Gold Menu and I don't regret it. Their sashimi is super fresh and clean. The service is great and the food comes out fairly quick! My server, Lola, explained the whole process to us and was very nice. It also has a great ambiance and is good for a casual date night.
