This was possibly the best food I've had in New Orleans-and I've had a lot of great dishes in the Crescent City. The fried potato croquette app was so inventive-and the sauce was the chef's kiss. The atmosphere was on-point 80s fun, and there were folks dressed down and folks dressed up-you can come as you are or make a night of it. Everyone looked at home-nobody was out of place. I had the fried catfish special-it was the most elevated fried catfish dish I've ever had, but this Southern girl still thought it tasted "right"....if that makes sense? The service was not memorable-but that's not necessarily a bad thing! The fresh bread and house made butter was so good-I finished off the leftovers in my hotel room much sooner than I thought I would. Dessert and drinks were decadent. I shared with a friend who's a pickier eater-but she was so glad I brought her along! This bar hands down has my favorite vibe in the city. Everything inside is crammed with nostalgia. I'd probably come here just for that. This visit we went just for drinks. Came in without a reservation and was seated promptly. They have two tables at the top of the steps and they did warn us that it's a few degrees cooler up there. It is actually very chilly so another heads up if you choose to sit there anyway. Lol. Yelp says this place is Turkish. But... the menu did not reflect that. Service was okay. It got better as the meal went on but still left much to be desired. For the price, both food and service should have been much better. Smoky eggplant - 5.5/10 for the price, I expected more than just a smear on the plate. I don't have a picture, but I was a little surprised at how little was served. It was okay, had some mushrooms on top, and served with garlic bread. We ordered roti on the side to eat with it, but don't think it was needed. You'd be better off going next door to Shaya for a dish like this. Crudo - 8/10 this was tasty. Small portion. Really enjoyed the crispy quinoa on top. Grilled cabbage - 1/10 this was not appetizing. The cabbage was over grilled. It was very mushy and had no bite. Also said it comes with chimichurri... and I've never had creamy chimichurri, it was more like a tzatziki. Grilled pastrami - 8.5/10 best dish we ordered. Ate it as lettuce wraps. Came with pickled cauliflower, some mint, other herbs, and lettuce. Pork chop - 7/10 juicy, cooked a good medium rare. Chili, garlic and Parmesan crusted artichoke hearts served with crusty sourdough bread. They come 3 to an order, but our hostess added one for our party of 4. Soooo delicious!! Other starters were the eggplant dip served with roti and steak tartare. The eggplant dip was so smooth and smoky. Covered in sesame seeds and topped with cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs, it was a great way to start a celebration dinner. The grilled pastrami was another must try. Thin slices of fresh pastrami grilled on a skewer. Served with crisp, fresh lettuce, beets, pickled veggies and herbs, make a lettuce wrap and enjoy. So good. The grilled cabbage and bok choy rounded out our tasting menu. They both paired perfectly with the pastrami. From the tapas style meal, cool ambiance and great service where our water glasses were never empty, which was very appreciated on a balmy Friday night in New Orleans, this was a great choice. Saw this place on social media for a while and it has been on my to-do list. The "80s" theme that they project on Instagram is very underwhelming once you see it in person. The service was absolutely terrible. Our server looked and acted like he was stoned or something, and had difficulty answering the most basic of questions. But honestly, I think the stoned, hipster vibe is what they are going for anyways. The food was decent, which is why I gave it three stars. The staff was pleasant and we had good service. And the food for the most part was good. We had the Tuna, Crudo and artichoke on a half shell. All were very good. It was steak night so they offered what they describe as their medium rare a prime rib eye with fries and optional bleu cheese. The steak was underwhelming...especially at $65. It tastes and presents like a $35 steak. Plus not medium rare and messy. The decor which at initially feels 80s nostalgic but then I realized it's more like a 80s B movie and an explosion of 80s Garage Sale finds.... Plus many items were 1990s.....just being picky. Lastly the drinks were average at best. Mostly felt like A Martini heavy menu. We had several and were blah and overpriced. You need to execute a mixed drink perfectly for the prices. The Filthy Guilda option was inventive though. For the amount we spent I expected a $250 experience but received a discount store version maybe half of that. read more

I'd describe the food as New American, and it definitely has a more fine dining feel compared to Turkey/Molly's. Don't worry though--even with the higher-end flavors and prices to match, the vibes are still very casual, as shown in the funky 80s decor and tableware. Side note: the bathroom is very cool as well lol, mirrors everywhere! Anyways, the food. We ordered family style and shared the: - artichoke hearts on the half shell: presentation was cute. the artichokes are served on oyster shell dishes and almost look like chargrilled oysters (kinda taste a little like them also?? Or maybe that's just placebo haha). These were delicious. - crudo: this was one of my favorite items on the menu. Lots of different flavors going on, and overall the dish is very light and refreshing - veal sweetbreads: also good. lots of different textures with the crisp of the breading mixed with the fattiness of the veal, along with several different types of crunch provided by peanut, puffed rice, and bean sprouts. I really enjoyed the veggie/dressing component of this dish. - fried crab boil potatoes with tartar sauce - tastes exactly like it sounds. I wish the potatoes were a **tad** crispier - daily special: seared scallops in this light sauce with southeast Asian flavors and spice. So good! Probably one of my favorite things we had. I wish this were a permanent fixture on the menu! - DRINKS: claro que tea was light and almost tasted reminiscent of a white wine or rose to me. Pandan old fashioned was actually so good. I'm not a huge bourbon fan, but I loved how much the pandan flavor lingered after each sip. They don't take reservations, so we did have to wait around ~30ish minutes around 5pm on a weekday, but it helps that you can order drinks and have water while you wait. 18% gratuity is added onto your bill automatically. Overall, I'm glad I tried this place! Everything I had was well done. I'm not exactly sure if anything blew me away but I'm excited to see what else may show up on the menu, and I just love the quirky atmosphere, so I'd come back. read more

Things I loved - the food was a solid 4/5 and the saving grace of this place. We got the eggplant dip that was probably the highlight of the menu. The crudo and beef tartar was okay. Went there tonight. The retro vibe and decor was great. Absolutely loved it. We did the "surprise us" menu option with 4 people ($65 each). All of the food was fantastic. There was only one thing I didn't like, but it was a personal preference thing, the other three people at the table loved it. I feel like the theme was overall spicy, and fruity/sweet. Highlights: the Korean bbq pastrami was . The fried chicken thighs were amazing. Others really liked the halibut ceviche-like thing (that one grossed me out) One note on the food. We're locals and can handle pretty spicy. Pretty much every dish was spicy--not so much that it was unpleasant for us, but there were a few that we were surprised at how spicy it was. Also, what every spicyness they used did go away pretty quickly...but if you don't have decent spice tolerance (you think Tabasco/Crystal is spicy and not just a flavor) it's gonna be an issue for you. Only thing that sucked was the service. Our server seemed like he barely wanted to be at the table. He literally kept dashing off before people could ask for stuff. He barely interacted with us other than to take our order and drop our food and check. Maybe it's because every table gets an 18% autograt and he didn't feel like dealing with us and could do the bare minimum and still get paid. Being a 25 year service industry veteran myself I know what good service is, and this wasn't it. He didn't 100% ruin the experience, but $400 for four people I at least expect a base level of service. I could have spent the same $ and gone to Ruth's Chris. Glad I went there and enjoyed the food a ton. But with the weak service and at that price point I'll probably call it a one and done. read more

I'm so disappointed with Hungry Eyes. I've been several times now and it's the same nonsense on repeat: They treat you like second class citizens the minute you walk in. We sat at the bar, and both the hostess and the bartender made a big display of their inconvenience to have us at the bar. It's confusing. We think maybe they're having a bad day - sure, we've all been there. We go to order some drinks, expecting reasonable service - especially with an empty bar. The bartender can hardly feign interest in our presence which isn't only super rude but these drinks aren't cheap and the place is billed as a cocktail spot. All our drinks were "on tap" and the dead-eyed bartender took forever pouring our gross pre-made $15 drinks before returning to ignoring us. I really don't understand what's happening in this spot. Seems like the 1980s are all the rage these days. Nostalgia is part of it, I'm sure, but then I see all these people born well after the 80s totally into it, too. As a child of the 80s, I'm sort of on board, sort of horrified (I'd be happy to never see excessive mirrors and neon decor ever again). But I'm a sucker for a good concept, don't get me wrong, and at Hungry Eyes, the concept is really more about the aesthetic (Nagel prints everywhere). The 80s theme does not quite extend itself to the food menu (definitely a good thing). Possibly the drink menu (are Cosmos an 80s thing? Probably... at least there are no woo woo shots or sex on the beach). But there's a pandan drink on the menu, too, so if you're not into a Cocktail (movie) throwback, you'll find something here. We sat at the bar and we enjoyed ourselves. I'd be intrigued enough to come back for those artichokes on the half shell (not sure if they can be made vegan. The decor is super cute and very 80's. We started off with cocktails which were yummy and then got some of the smaller plates to try. The artichoke hearts on a half shell were fantastic! We ordered a side of roti to go with the halibut crudo which was very flavorful and had an interesting touch of cinnamon. We also got an order of fries with toum and the grilled pastrami. The espresso martini and cosmo were so bad that I sent both back, and I never send things back in restaurants. The fries with garlic sauce (toum) and sourdough ciabatta were both good (we did have to request butter for the bread, and they brought us the most hilarious presentation of butter - see the picture). As someone else has said, the interior is pretty bad, the music was strangely nowhere near 80's music - they played tribal and Latin music the entire time we were there. Love the 80s themed - Especially loved seeing a mini panther statue that I'm pretty sure my uncle owned back in the day. And the tv/vcr combo playing 80s movies. I opted for the tasting menu, which turned out to be a great decision. First, was the steak tartare, which was a BANGER. The flavor! I would eat that ten times over. Then were the artichoke hearts on the half shell. Those were delicious! Thought I was eating a chargrilled oyster for a second. Perfectly seasoned. Then, was the smoky eggplant dip, which I probably wouldn't have ordered myself but I'm glad I got to taste it because it was also quite good. It came with a nice roti as well. I would certainly order it now. After those was the grilled cabbage & bok choy, carrot tempura, and the off-menu duck confit with crispy rice & beans. The grilled cabbage & bok choy was good but my least favorite of the night. I think the peppercorn oil in it may have been a bit overpowering for me. The carrot tempura was a delightful dish. It had curried carrot butter and came with house made ranch. Both delicious. I love a good fried veggie. The duck was just *chef's kiss*. I'm so glad that I got to try this off-menu item. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was tender and flavorful. The hint of mint in the dish really set it off. 10/10 dish. Lastly, for dessert was the pavlova. This was my first pavlova. Definitely not a dessert that I would select myself but I must say that it was quite good. I was glad that it wasn't too sweet and I enjoyed the fresh fruit and drizzle. It was a good dessert. The service was great - our server was extra careful to explain each dish and went over specials. She was attentive the entire time. The drinks were good as well. Hungry Eyes is super cute inside! I had been looking forward to trying for a long time but ultimately it was a disappointment. They have a half off martini happy hour but there are no classic martinis on the menu which is a little weird. The Ube bay baby cocktail was so sweet I couldn't even finish it. Really gross, a shame because I love Ube! Our bartender was super unfriendly. But we moved onto dinner and our server was great! The food was uneven though. Every dish was oversalted, some to the point of being almost inedible (the beef cheeks). The fries were good though, liked the toum on the side. Reading reviews is what I usually do prior to visiting an establishment. I was meeting my friend for Happy Hour at Hungry Eyes so we could enjoy some martinis and catch up. When I read the reviews on Yelp, I was a little reluctant about meeting here, but it was somewhere I'd been curious about ever since it opened, so I went. I am so happy and excited to say I had a wonderful experience here! Of course visiting with my friend was the highlight, but...Carlos was the cherry on top! I'm still trying to figure out who wrote the below five star reviews. Crazy, but the good thing is I can report to you that this is a place you should definitely experience. The drinks were amazing and Carlos, in addition to just being a joy, is extremely knowledgeable about the drinks, wines, food, music, etc. My friend and her husband have been here several times and I had the opportunity to meet their delightful server. Everyone was particularly perturbed at a dish that included the words "half-shell" but contained no oysters. A funny joke to a transplant, maybe... You can't make a reservation, and the interior is quite loud, so you'll need to brush up on your ASL to communicate with your date. Wow mason really doesn't miss. Been dying to come here, and everything was great from the looks to the food to the service. Lauren the bartender made great drinks and provided AMAZING service(more on that later). The artichokes are a must get. I've eaten at way too many places here and this was one of the best things I've had in the city and I'll be coming back for them alone. I also ordered the steak. I'm picky when it comes to steak bc I cook a mean one, but it came out flavorful, juicy, and cooked PERCECTLY. Fries with great too. For dessert I had the blonde. Served warm and it was delicious! I also grabbed a martini to go, didn't know it was a martini bar and had the lychee one and it was great! Now for the service, most good restaurants here need to have good service or they will fail. The service here is top notch everyone was friendly, and accommodating. I want to add that I left my phone in an Uber on the way here. Had to chase it and couldn't get my phone, so I entered the restaurant all frazzled. Sat at the bar and Lauren let me use her phone to try to get it back(I did later!) and was really nice. Really turned my mood around and helped me enjoy my night out here. The rest of the workers were great too, they allowed me to stay a little later as they were closing up. When Uber didn't call back, another worker(didn't catch her name but whoever you are thank you!) offered to order me an Uber since my walk was like 40 mins home. When I declined and said I'd walk since I didn't want them to pay and didn't have cash for the street car, she gave me the $ to grab it. All in all, while it wasn't the easiest night, the workers here really turned my night around. Greatly disappointed ...... we felt like we were served the left overs in the kitchen. Suggest if you are going in for a light bite and cocktail.... However, by all means skip the tasting menu....
