I haven't tried the food at Hungry Ghost but I've been to several of their cafes in Brooklyn and love the coffee and service. The people who work behind the counter couldn't be nicer and are very accommodating. And the coffee, tea, and scones are delicious. I'm a huge fan. read more

The coffee is excellent. Their cappuccino has a delightful hint of a nutty flavor. The baristas are sweet and friiendly. The place is not at all crampy like one reviewer suggested. Giving it 2 stars because of my interaction with the owner. I had just finished a FaceTime conversation when I asked the owner if he would lower the music. "No. If you want to FaceTime you can go outside," he replied. I would never be so presumptuous as to ask to lower music for a personal conversation, which I explained to him. "We can't respond to all requests of customers, like changing the volume of music and changing temperature." A few minutes later, the volume was turned down to where it always is! Good coffee and good food. Donuts from dough and coffee from stumptown in addition to other baked goods. Only issue is the bad attitude. Two really nice guys working there but when my friend asked for more cream cheese on her bagel (there was so little that I asked her if she got butter - that's how thin it was) the girl who had apparently prepared it gave an angry face and said that it had melted. Listen, no one asked if the cream cheese had melted. I understand the basic physics of cream cheese + hot bagel. The request was for more cream cheese. Hungry Ghost isn't a place to come with your computer and sit for hours (there are designated tables that are laptop free), and honestly, I don't mind that. Every time I've been there, it's been super-crowded, and cafes that are lap-top friendly quick get that library vibe and suddenly there are no tables available for people who actually want to sit and chat. So points for that. And points for really taste baked goods- the peanut butter chocolate chip cookie is decadent and the banana chocolate chip muffin is the perfect start to the morning. The tea selection isn't the best, but they all have the usual suspects (black, green, and herbal). My only two gripes with this place: first, I find the space itself to be a little sterile - or perhaps a better word is a bit run-of-the-mill. It feels like another place playing Bon Iver with baristas wearing knit caps. And second, though it's better than the newer Hungry Ghost on Fulton Street, there's something about the design of this cafe that doesn't seem to maximize seating somehow. As I mentioned, it's always utterly packed, and somehow I find myself thinking "really? That's all the seats they could get in here?!" Honestly, I feel like if you don't fit in with the crowd that's always in this place, you'll have a terrible experience because they'll make you feel super uncomfortable. Overpriced. This place is such a rip off. Iced tea costs $3.75 for a small 12 oz. cup that is full of ice and tastes generic. Just because they changed the name and remodeled a while ago (so that there are fewer seats which are less conducive for lingering over a cup of coffee) doesn't mean they should overcharge for everything. This is why several people, even though we like to support small businesses, have started to go to Starbucks a block away. read more

It's a wonderful spot to meet up with friends! The sandwiches are delicious and lattes are always perfect! There is limited seating and only some spots where you can use your laptop, so it's not the best atmosphere to work in. read more

You'd think being a regular would at least get you the same treatment as others; but that is not the case. Usually I just buy coffee to stay. This morning I ordered a bagel. Usually the staff serve your food at the table. The manager, Justin, yells my name across the cafe and once I look up he points to my bagel, so I get up and get it. I thought maybe things had changed. Nope.Less then five minutes later I see him bringing a bagel to someone else's table. Wow. Lessons is, if they become to comfortable with you, the quality diminishes. Not returning. The owner also owns Prospect Perk a few blocks away, and they appreciate everyone . read more

Their coffee is ok, not the best but not the worst. I've received really good service here and I've received terrible service by individuals who are too preoccupied with how hip their hat looks on their head. The one thing that prompted me to write this review was that the last two times I've walked in, once at 7:45p and once at 8:10p they were out of drip coffee and not brewing for the evening. Ummmm, you are a coffee house. I know that you close at 9p and not many people drink coffee that late, but you are a coffee house. Anyway, maybe I'm being a bit harsh and for that I apologize. I'll still pop in for a coffee in a pinch, but there are certainly other places that actually have coffee brewing. read more

Came here during my lunch break today around 3 pm. I ordered a choco chunk cookie, nitro coffee and the grilled chicken fontina and pesto panini. Came out to ~$18 so it was quite expensive IMO. Wasnt too crowded bc it wasnt peak hour.. Yet i waited 30 min for my panini..... I mean seriously?! Its two pieces of bread w chicken in the middle that u grill for a minute. I inquired three times about my order since i was getting antsy. Good thing i bought their really expensive cookie to suppress my hunger. Their nitro coffee which is nitrogen infused coffee tasted extremely acidic. I dont think the nitrogen does anything interesting to the coffee at all. Coffee was horrible... Or maybe i have undeveloped palate for coffee? The barista told me they messed up the order. Ok so how long does it take to make another panini?!!!! I had to ask them to pack it to go since my lunch hour was up. The barista was barely sorry. Its too bad because i wanted to support a local coffee shop but i will never come back again. read more

Had a fantastic vanilla latte at Hungry Ghost in Brooklyn. They make the vanilla syrup from scratch and it speaks for itself once you try it. I'm picky about my coffee and this place was legit. The staff was friendly and had a "customer is right" attitude with a smile. read more

My first time here I met someone for lunch. Delicious sandwich, decent service, lovely place. Was really looking forward to returning often, for social occasions and also to work. I'm giving it three stars rather than two, because I do expect to come back to hang out with friends, etc. So I came back today with my laptop. Bought a drink and a scone. All fine. Sat at one of the two-person tables and realized I it wasn't going to be possible to work there productively on a laptop. At which point, I, like numerous reviewers before me, discover the small and relatively inconspicuous signs saying that laptops are not allowed in either of the places I could work comfortably - at the large table or in one of the chairs by the window, the bar area being the wrong height and poorly lit. At which point I had to pack up, leave, go elsewhere and buy another beverage in order to have a place to work, my home office being briefly unusable. It's the manager's prerogative to institute whatever seating policies make sense to him. I also get that there are people who aren't always comfortable being surrounded by laptops when they go for coffee, and that those people enjoy having a space where laptop use is limited to certain areas. And yes, there are many, many places in Park Slope/Prospect Heights where I can take my laptop and work. I would have gone to one of those places yesterday to begin with, if there had been a sign near the door or at the counter that laptop use is restricted to certain areas. What I resent is making this discovery after purchasing food and drink and getting settled. (And I would have willingly spent another good chunk of change on their food for the privilege of spending the day there). I couldn't find even the smallest mention of the policy on their website either. Show some respect for people's time, please. Also, the seats designated for laptops/no laptops don't completely make sense. Why would they want someone with a laptop taking up a table where two people could be eating lunch? Why have really fast WiFi if most of your customers will not be able to make use of it? Are iPads kosher? If so, it would be nice to see a note about that somewhere. As to one reviewer's statement that the people with strollers are "creating community," my vision of "community" includes me and other freelancers looking for a change of scene and the presence of other humans. read more

I thought I would love this place, but I find the employees often smug or clueless. The crowd also makes it hard to enjoy a coffee to stay. And, most importantly, I'm definitely not crazy about Stumpton coffee, at least their espresso. OK, it' s direct trade and/or organic, but the taste is very bitter and not "round". I have met a colleague here several times for "working coffee" dates. The seating is limited and trying to get a chair parallels trying to find parking in Brooklyn: hover hover hover false alarm hover hover swoop! The general crowding and bustle somehow takes away from my ability to enjoy the experience, which is not the fault of the business itself. What is nice if you are able to get a seat is that you are overlooking Flatbush and can people watch to your hearts' content. The cafe feels open, lots of light, very clean, but lacking in the cute local dynamic of say, Roots on 5th avenue in Brooklyn. They have a selection of pastries, bagels and the like for breakfast which I've never tried so cannot comment on. The coffee is okay, I don't particularly enjoy their regular blend which is Stumptown. I've never had a problem with the baristas, who have been pleasant. As for the no laptop seating rule, get over it, people! This is a very busy place, you don't need to colonize every corner for 5 hours while you check your facebook or work on your award-winning screenplay. One thing that annoys me is their lack of refills--you're charged full price again. I think it's again to discourage people from sitting around all day. Which is fine, but leads once more to the rushed/crowded feeling that keeps me from giving HG more than 3 stars. read more

Arrived to Hungry Ghost today for a bite to eat. Arrived at 12:45p and ordered the fresh mozzarella sandwich. There was only one patron drinking a coffee and on his laptop. 30 minutes later, starving and almost late for work, my sandwich NEVER CAME. Followed up three times in 30 minutes and now there more than a dozen people happily eating and drinking. Service person apologized and returned my $8.45. I was not offered anything complimentary in place of my sandwich. I was just returned my money and over 30 minutes spent wasted. read more

I've started walking twenty minutes to the HG every morning even though I have an excellent coffee place next door to me. It's the coffee, prepared with care, but also the vibe. What is vibe? If you have to ask you'll never know, as Louis Armstrong once said about jazz. One thing vibe is not is a place where everyone is hiding behind their little illuminated apples, as dispiriting an image as you'll find in this part of Brooklyn. The HG puts the apple orchard mainly in the back so the rest of us can make eye contact and maybe even chat. Radical. Can I may one request, though, of the baristas? Can you crank down the music in the morning? Its much louder in front than where you work and it sometimes can be a rude awakening even if the mix is good. Let the coffee do its work. read more

I love this cafe, I come here quite often. I would just like to say to the people who are upset about the laptop seating, get over it. A cafe is not obligated to give you a place to work that should be your responsibility. Also to clb k. I would just like to say that the seating arrangement can not be described as communist because that would imply that everyone shares the all the space, in fact the seating arrangement is quite capitalist, it is there to keep people moving so that the owners can make more money. Also think about it from a communal point of view, your laptop probably takes up a large amount of space and if they let people use their laptop on the big table they might only be able to sit four or five people with laptops when they could sit eight or ten. Also if you need a place to work why not get an office or work from home. They've already provided you with food and/or drink do they need to give you an office. I commend this cafe for its economical seating arrangement and I hope more stores will follow its example read more

Coffee is good and the donuts are great. The pastries are otherwise a little small. The service is usually without a smile or much acknowledgment, which is disappointing. There seem to be many moments of awkwardness caused by people trying to find appropriate laptop seating each day, and there isn't much seating at all. The location is good for people watching, if you can get a seat, and the cafe is very pretty - but it's not particularly inviting. I'd recommend a coffee to go - that way you get the best thing about the place straight off. read more

Unfortunately, it seems that they've stopped making them in-house or perhaps using a different baker, as the scones have gone down markedly in the past few months.
