While scrolling social media one evening, I stumbled across a heated debate about who makes the…read morebest peanut butter pie in Central PA. This conversation was clearly MADE for me. As someone who takes peanut butter desserts perhaps a little more seriously than the average human being, I immediately started making a list of the top contenders. Oak Grove Farms kept popping up, so when I found myself with a free rainy Saturday afternoon, it became time for an official Peanut Butter Pie Procurement Mission. Now, Oak Grove Farms offers way more than peanut butter pie. Their farm market is stocked with fresh produce, baked goods, meats, dairy products, locally made items and all kinds of other goodies. But this particular Yelp review? This mission? Laser-focused on peanut butter pie. Before leaving home, I called to make sure I wouldn't drive over only to discover they'd sold out. The nice lady who answered the phone happily confirmed they still had peanut butter pie available. Mission status: ON! When I arrived, I was actually surprised by how busy the farm market was despite the rainy weather. Apparently a little rain isn't enough to keep folks away from Oak Grove, which is always a good sign. I walked straight inside and made an immediate beeline for the refrigerated pie case. There were only two individual slices of peanut butter pie left, so I grabbed one before anyone else could beat me to it. They also had half and whole pies available, but let's try to exercise at least a little self-control on the first visit. The damage? A whopping $2.49 for a slice of peanut butter pie. I actually laughed. That's almost suspiciously affordable these days. As I was heading toward the register, I made the mistake of walking past the whoopie pies. Or perhaps the best decision of the day. Five minutes later, I was walking out with not only my peanut butter pie but also a Shoofly Whoopie Pie for another $2.50. My picnic dessert situation had officially escalated. Fast forward a few hours...dinner was over. It was dessert time. The peanut butter pie absolutely lived up to the hype! The filling was light and fluffy while still delivering a rich peanut butter flavor in every bite. I'm usually not the biggest fan of chocolate cookie crusts on peanut butter pie because I think they sometimes overpower the filling, but this one worked beautifully. Even the little dollops of whipped topping around the edge added just the right finishing touch. This one has officially earned a spot near the top of my Central PA peanut butter pie rankings! And then...the Shoofly Whoopie Pie. I honestly bought it because I'd never seen one before and curiosity got the better of me. And, I'm really glad it did! It was incredibly moist with a rich molasses flavor that came through beautifully without being overwhelming. It was unlike any whoopie pie I've had before, and easily one of my favorite varieties I've tried in quite a while. Mission accomplished! While Oak Grove Farms is clearly much more than just a destination for desserts, this peanut butter pie expedition was an overwhelming success. Being an enclosed shop allows the ability to buy that special one of kind item under one roof all year round. They are in a corner of a busy intersection location but parking is readily available. The staff were friendly and pointed out some of their more popular items. Different products fill the main front part of the store but be sure to go down the hallway and check out the other adjoining well stocked rooms. If you need something unique to give as a gift or certain ingredients for your next meal you will likely be able to find it here. Refrigerator cases are filled with meats and dairy products. There is a bakery corner, hand made soaps and scented candles, herbs and spices, locally grown honeys, Zeke's Coffee and other kitchen items and accessories. So many things available to keep you happily shopping!

A typical week includes two types of fruit, some sort of leafy green (salad greens in spring, kale and such later on), some sort of potatoes, an additional veggie (like peppers, onions, and/or eggplant), a loaf of bread and a dozen eggs. My girlfriend and I take one share, designed for a family of four, and we eat well all summer and fall and are able to save a significant amount for winter. They're usually open every Saturday with extra foods and meats for sale. Lastly, even though this is a family operation, they are always quick to credit their "workshares" - members who work picking and/or packing produce in exchange for reduced rates on their CSA. A local business worth supporting.

I wouldn't recommend this place for the normal grocery type food items from other companies because they were very pricey but if you don't have a vehicle or just want something out of convenience, I would understand from a business aspect how it works for people in the community. Tomatoes is one of my favorite foods and the ones here were huge, healthy looking and offered at a great price. I may also venture back for the bulk grains since they were reasonable priced. As I looked around, I heard the owner having a conversation with a customer about farming and other environmental topics and he really seems to know his stuff. Worth checking out next time you're in the Highlandtown area.

My family has tried various online "fresh food" companies, pre-made meal, you name it and they were just ok... usually the food did not last and was mediocre at best. We love our local famers market but even with our good intentions, we rarely made it on time. When my hubs stumbled upon FTF I was skeptical but really liked the idea of delivery, subscriptions and ala cart options and loved supporting our local farmers and businesses so we gave it a try. Here we are two yrs later and we still LOVE it! The fruits and veggies are so fresh that they typically arrive still covered in soil... this is actually our families favorite part! After about 6 months of receiving the subscriptions, we started ordering ala cart items and for the last year or so we've been getting about 75% of our weekly food from FTF. The meats, bakery, dairy and pantry items are all great! FTF is also not like a CSA where you tend to get the same items week after week. They have variety and this makes it fun for the whole family. We've received items that either we would never have chosen or had never eaten and we love it. If you are a meal planner than FTF is a wonderful option bc you get an email of the items that will come the following week and you have plenty of time to plan accordingly. The recipes and storage tips they provide are a great touch too. If you are traveling then it's super easy to suspend the service for as long as needed. Now, are they perfect, no however they do a darn good job fixing mistakes and are quick to respond to any questions or concerns. Sometimes there are missing or unavailable items and we will either receive a credit for or will get a little extra of another item. Personally, we would rather get that credit or extra item then a subpar product that would end up in the trash. There is a lot of talk in the reviews about the surprise email halting delivery to re-vamp and let me tell you, we were SAD... so sad but they worked hard to get back online and we were super excited to receive an email a week later announcing they were back up and running. Dealing with the logistics of fresh foods and delivery to the (very large) Balt-Wash area can not be easy, fresh food is very temperamental. The best part of it all... our 5yo son gets super excited to see the "red bags" on our front porch every week and he's learning about fresh foods and how important it is to support our local farmers. Then, the next 10 weekends are just to hard to get out of bed and down there in time?? Yes? Well then just have From the Farmer deliver those groceries to your door? You heard me....YOUR DOOR!! You just wake up on a Friday morning and there is this cool basket stuffed with produce picked at a local farm....maybe even some cheese in there made locally! Small batch jam is your thing.....I GOT THAT IN MY BASKET TOOOOO, along with fresh baked bread, one week I got pasta sauce!!!!!! Payment is based on the honor system since the owner can't always be there. They accept Venmo, PayPal and cash. I'd recommend not using cash unless you have exact change because you may not be able to make proper change. The driveway is gravel and there a a few parking spots. There is a big tree with swings right next to the small shack where they sell their items. I'm not sure if they let kids swing on the swings but it wouldn't hurt to ask. Each week's vegetable share has a great variety of produce, and everything is much better (and much better priced) than equivalents from the grocery store. There are meat, chicken, egg and cheese shares available as well. Everything they sell is raised in a healthy, sustainable and ethical way. Each week the farm sends out an update with extras available at that week's pickup--like fruit (peaches and berries in the summer, apples in the fall), milk, fair trade coffee, and other local products. The weekly emails also include recipes with suggestions for how to use less familiar ingredients. Two years ago I'd never tasted kohlrabi, now it is one of my favorite vegetables. In addition the incredible food, the pickups (I attend the Alexandria pickup) are like a weekly party...there are always free cookies, and members often stick around to chat. Margaret and the other farmer staff members are always helpful and friendly.

A friend signed me up for a few mini fruit harvest boxes as a birthday gift last year. I've always been wary of meal-kit delivery services, their price, and the overuse of packaging - but Hungry Harvest is not like that AT ALL. It's much closer to a CSA, with fresh produce you can use any way you'd like, and the packaging is mostly paper-based and recyclable. (Sometimes food comes in clamshells, but that's only for a few items.) Plus I hoard to reusable freezer packs they use in the summer for my own picnics/trips/etc. I now get a bi-weekly mini mixed harvest, ($15!) which gives me a lot of food. Without a doubt everything I get has been fresh, tasty, and sometimes unexpected. It's prompted me to try new dishes and new flavors. I really like adding on staples as well - the garlic is amazing! Plus lemons, limes (for margaritas) and bread from Atwaters & H&S is a treat. There are some foods I really don't like (mangos) and they have an option for you to opt-out of getting those foods when they're in season, and instead they substitute it with a comparable item (usually oranges, much better.) I live in Balt. city, and it's very helpful they text me when my box has arrived so I can go fetch it before it disappears. I really have nothing bad to say about this service - it's very reasonably priced, uses low amounts of non-recyclable packaging, has always been fresh and includes great fruits and veggies. Even if they look a little weird, they taste great. My friends honestly wish I'd shut up about this, but I won't! Not ever! read more

Though the spaghetti squash did have a "dirt spot" on one side, which is common for squash. Everything in the box was well packed and cooled by a gel pack and it came with a how-to guide for storing different produce. Once I emptied the box, I noticed the gel pack was leaking in the box and luckily it hadn't on the produce. One of my items was swapped, brussels sprouts for a zucchini, which I was a bit bummed about but did read that items may be swapped for several reasons. Also I customized my box for extra minneola and subbed apples, and added several add-on items from their marketplace. Delivery was prompt, however I received a notice for it about 5 min. before it was delivered, which is a very quick heads up. A notification (email/text) for confirmation that an order processed then one for shipped for delivery (once leaving the warehouse) would be better in my opinion. Overall, I would buy again and recommend this service to others that would like to try produce that they may have never eaten before or for the convenience. read more

I highly recommend Hungry Harvest. Of course I want to support saving fruits and vegetables from winding up in the landfill, and of course I want to contribute towards HH's laudable practices of hiring the homeless and ex-offenders, as well as donating produce to the needy. But in addition to that -- getting Hungry Harvest is really fun! Every other week a box of fruits and vegetables are left at my door. The driver texts me to let me know when he will arrive, so I know when to expect it. I love to see what is inside each box (I feel like I am opening a present) and HH has helped to get me out of my produce comfort zone. A few things have been included in the box that I have actually had to google to find out what it was and how to use it! (Hungry Harvest also discusses such topics in their newsletter.) I have found HH to be very responsive, easily cancelling and restarting delivery when we are on vacation, and not including fruits and veggies in my box that I have put on my "Never" list. All around, a great concept, and a great socially conscious company. Their e-mails are friendly and useful, often including recipes, but not overwhelming in number. Excellent! My wife & I have been getting the $25 box every other week for about a year. It's awesome. We've only thrown away 1 or 2 pieces, the entire time. We don't have to spend nearly as much at the grocery store (peapod!), we eat more heathily (is that a word? no? well, it is now!), and we get to be a lot more lazy -- food just comes to us. And they make good on the 50%-off referral thingy. I've definitely cashed in on that. The add-ons are fun to occasionally throw in, too. I pretty much never run out of onions anymore. I actually eat apples again. Potatoes & sweet potatoes are great. I always eat the tomatoes on day 1, if any are available. And they do indeed heed your "suggestions" on how to modify the "you don't quite know what you're getting" order. For example, I might get onions & apples instead of grapefruits & eggplants, which I can't stand. It works. We may even step up to a $25 box every week, or a $35 box every other week. We're not sure yet, but we go through our other food so much more slowly, now that we have all this healthy produce all the time. We want to increase the goodness :) read more

I've received 3 deliveries from Hungry Harvest so far. So far I am impressed with this company. I get the organic mini harvest each week. My diet revolves around vegetables and proteins (Paleo) with a few fruits added in on occasion. Because I can customize my order and eliminate the fruits I don't eat, I get only the items that fit my diet template. The vegetables have always been a very good quality. No complaints there. my first order came with mangos and star fruit which were not good at all. I'm learning that non seasonal fruits are not reliable, even in the grocery stores. I've had a missing items from 2, however their customer service is so good that they credited me immediately for those missing items. I love the fact that it's delivered to my door with text messages from the driver telling me when he is on his way with the ability to text him, that I can skip deliveries whenever I choose, customize my order and add on items that are not included with the selected "share". The company is doing a service to eliminate waste and end hunger. read more

We started getting our Hungry Harvest CSA last week and have been absolutely impressed so far. Our first bag had a great variety of fruits and vegetables that we used to make dinner the first night we had them. This week, we weren't able to pick our food up during normal hours (we are in an area where we walk about five blocks to get our food--super easy). I contacted Hungry Harvest to see what I could do about this and within hours I had an email back that said they would deliver our bag directly to our door this week, no problem. The customer service is wonderful, the mindset and problem solving behind Hungry Harvest's model is well-thought through and comprehensive. Their weekly email newsletter provides us with recipes that are tailored to the specific foods we will be receiving in our bags, which I think is brilliant and super helpful. This is an organization that is doing a lot of things right, and I can't wait to keep supporting them and cooking creatively with the produce they are providing. read more

I've been subscribing to Hungry Harvest for about 9 months now and couldn't be happier. My boyfriend and I receive a full harvest every two weeks, which is a perfect supplement to our store-bought groceries. I love that Hungry Harvest gives me the flexibility to opt-out of produce I don't like and add individual items, like herbs. It's also introduced me to a number of new fruits that I probably wouldn't have tried on my own, like starfruit and Asian pears (so tasty!). I can't speak highly enough about the quality of the deliveries. Oftentimes the food is even better than the produce from the grocery store. To anyone who might be skeptical about "rejected" fruits and veggies: I've never had any issue with the freshness of any item I've received. The price given the amount and quality of the food -- especially considering that it includes delivery -- is a steal! We LOVE getting our Hungry Harvest box on our door step each week! It is such a fun surprise for the kids to open it up and see what treats await us. And we have such a ball laughing at some of the oddly shaped or colored produce, and wondering why stores would want to reject THIS?!! It is a GREAT lesson for the kids to learn, regarding food appreciation and waste, and we adults are so grateful for a program that reduces that waste. We are all proud supporters of this group. And the food is great quality - only twice in 4 months have we gotten something that SHOULD have been rejected! I love that we can also still get organic produce. One of the best parts - LESS GROCERY shopping! ESPECIALLY appreciated when we return home from many weekends away, and have a box of fresh produce ready for us to enjoy that week. I've been enjoying my Hungry Harvest box for several months now and the Coronavirus that's been keeping us homebound has proven to be the best part of being at home. I look forward to every Sunday to see what's in the box and I find myself logging in to see what I've ordered in addition to my regular harvest. I've belonged to CSA's in the past but found them to be lacking when it comes to fruit. Not so with Hungry Harvest. And the eggs are to die for. Love having it delivered to my front porch, especially at this point in time. Loving the communications from staff when they're on their way to the house or an item is out of stock or they can't provide an item that we expected. I don't think I've ever been disappointed in Hungry Harvest and I've done my best to recommend them to others, especially those who have had to travel to farms for their boxes. I've used services like this before that don't let you choose your produce, which makes meal planning on a busy schedule nearly impossible. Hungry Harvest gives you the ability to personalize your delivery and make staples reoccurring (for us, onions, apples, and eggs). You can skip a week too if needed. The produce itself is usually of good quality, though it's often necessary to let things ripen on the counter before using them. If anything is damaged or too ripe to use upon delivery (a rare occurrence, but it happens), they are quick to refund the value of the produce. PITFALL - It's tempting to over-utilize the personalization and waaaaay over order! Start small and increase your harvest if needed. You can add things on pretty easily, even to a small harvest. My husband and I cook from home five days a week and pack lunches, and we usually do the mini harvest with 3 or 4 add on items. read more

We get the full organic box twice a month and we LOVE it. While the veggies are recovered they last for quite a while in the fridge. It's fun to find new recipes for veggies that we would never ordinarily buy....Parsnip or Turnip Fries anyone? They also have add-ons that you can get with every delivery or on specific deliveries of your choice: homemade granola, salsas, jams, jellies, herbs, peanut butter, coffee, etc. The staff are responsive, friendly and patient. They also send a weekly email about what your getting, why it's being recovered and offer recipes for the items in your box. BUT THE BEST THING - they give away so much produce in inner city areas where access to an actual grocery store with fresh produce is non existent (most of these areas have only bodegas/convenient stores which offer little produce) . We've been subscribers to Hungry Harvest for about a half year and love it! Prices are reasonable, variety is phenomenal, quality of food is good to great, service is reliable. They pay attention to delivery instructions and on the rare occasion when something goes wrong, they are very responsive. In case you're not familiar with HH, they rescue, pack up and deliver customized boxes of produce to you. This is produce that would have been thrown out because it doesn't meet picture perfect grocery store standards (too big or small, misshapen or scarred) or was produced in excess (crop yield exceeded store demands). The produce is fresh and tasty. In addition to reducing food waste, HH also works with city neighborhood food deserts. Their website lets you easily modify your order and makes canceling a delivery (vacation, etc.) really easy. You should try it! read more

I have never been disappointed or unhappy with my harvest. I absolutely look forward to my delivery every week. I get an email on Thursday to let me know what will be in my harvest and i sit down and plan my grocery shopping and meals around my harvest. It is a wonderful way to stay on the healthy track. I am so so happy i signed up for this wonderful harvest. Also customer service has always been very helpful and I have absolutely no complaints. Representing the NC area. I have yet to be disappointed in my Hungry Harvest (HH) delivery, the small veggie box, even when there are last minute swap outs. The veggies are varied from week to week and, while they may be misshapen or ugly, are still completely edible. Who cares about how they look, I'm going to cut them up anyway. The internet provides recipes galore, all I have to do is type in the veggies I have on hand and viola. Yesterday's dinner was Swiss chard, snow peas, and beef stir fry - delicious ! HH has truly made me a more versatile "chef" and I am eating much, MUCH better nutritiously. I would never think to buy many of the veggies I get in my weekly delivery. I have, for years, passed them up in the grocery store for the more traditional veggies. My purse, pallet, and physical well-being are pleased with HH. read more

This is a company that does such good work, everyone should be a member. It prevents waste of usable food, donates to those less fortunate and provides a wonderful variety of ugly food that is delicious. My husband and I have become more attuned to trying new foods and recipes. The price is right, the food is delivered to your door( they even inform you when they are coming.) They are always responsive to calls and emails. This is the perfect company to do business with as they help so many different people in different situations. We have never been disappointed. The twice monthly deliveries are perfect for our two person household. I feel that they are a much better bargain than CSA's. I can only encourage everyone to join and help save food and people. read more

So worth it! I love the variety of the box, and the ability to change around your veggies if there's something you don't want, or want more of. The suggested recipes that I've tried have been great. The box is delivered on time, they text to let you know it's on the way and has arrived, and you get emails ahead of time to tell you what's available that week + any available add-ons. Customer service has been great + really responsive. I get the small veggie box and it's enough for a week for my boyfriend and I--we buy supplemental meat and occasionally pasta, but the majority of what we eat is from hungry harvest! The price is incredibly reasonable and it's cool to know I'm helping save otherwise thrown-away veggies. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Started receiving Hungry Harvest earlier this year and I've been a huge fan ever since. I loath spending my limited free time going to the grocery store, so Hungry Harvest provides a cheaper, healthier alternative delivered right to my door on Sundays. The produce has always been good and I've been able to experiment with new foods on a week by week basis. The deliveries allow for customization, so I never receive foods I won't eat. As a single, twenty-something, the quantity is enough to last me a full week given that I'll eat out several times as well. On top of all the individual benefits, I'm supporting a good cause and making a difference. It's a big win in multiple categories. Looking forward to continuing in 2019! read more

I dread the day when I no longer live in an area that Hungry Harvest serves. I just hope that they continue to spread across the US. It is an amazing service run by dedicated people who care about their community and the environment. I have zero complaints and highly recommend HH to everyone I know! The prices are fantastic, I'm using fruits and veggies in recipes that I normally wouldn't even think to buy, and I feel better about my purchases knowing that otherwise the food would be going to waste. On top of all of this, you can cancel or pause your subscription at any time. I honestly don't know why everyone that can benefit from HH's service doesn't. I received my first bag of Hungry Harvest organic produce yesterday. It was on my front porch in a refrigerated bag as promised. Almost all of the produce items were the cream of the crop, albeit one of two red-leaf lettuce that was a bit too wilted and mushy to eat. Some items were over the amount promised (a whole lot of rainbow carrots). Other items were well below (only one yam when six were listed) or not included (missing kale). I've helped bag produce at precious locations and understand that the number of items vary and bags have to be arranged to make it most fair for all recipients. Happy with the selection and plan on buying another bag. Love the idea of a bag going to someone in need with my purchase! read more

I cannot give enough praise for the mission, personnel and quality of this company. What a wonderfully easy way to make a continuous contribution to local food insecure families! The customer service is beyond attentive and make sure that the customer is satisfied. Delivery to your workplace by partnering with places like Baltimore County Public Schools is unbelievably easy. Receiving our harvest each week is like opening up a birthday or Christmas present... So much fun! But best of all...the harvest makes you step outside your broccoli and green bean comfort zone! What's more, the contents of the harvest are customizable....I am so thrilled to be able to participate in this program. It is fabulous!! read more

Unlike typical dried apricots, they're much thicker and darker in color and, while very delicious, some have seeds (or portions of pits) that you can't see. Those native to the area from which these come may well know that and know how to eat safely, but to the uninitiated like me a bite into one that chipped a tooth came as a very unpleasant surprise and landed me at the dentist. Sadly, seems the manager failed to accept my attempt at a good-natured suggestion some weeks ago--after a bit of unnecessary wrangling that included being told that apricots don't have pits, that you need to watch what you eat, and that it was my fault (which got me really annoyed and playing the attorney that I am)--to add "caution, contain seeds" to the label.

The turnover is quick and I've never had to wait to park. People are usually in & out. Issues... the only herbs they sell is cilantro. I'm ok with that (mostly). But I really wish they had mint & basil. They are closed during winter. Makes sense but... Those are the longest 4 months for me.

There was a fruit stand that primarily had a large variety of apples many that I had never heard of. I took a leap and tried a couple of varieties that were absolutely delicious. I bought some for eating and some for apple pie and cobbler. They also have pears , purple cauliflower, and some other produce. I noticed they have fresh apple cider in 1/2 gallons and quarts. Although this trip was primarily for apples, I couldn't resist the purple cauliflower and some delicious pears. I of course had to walk through and see what other tasty treats and wears they had. If you like Empanadas you must go to the rear of the market and try the large variety of mouth watering empanadas that cater to the meat lover and the vegetarian. Though not on this trip, I've enjoyed the Shrimp Old Bay and Spinach & Cheese. You can also buy them to freeze and have them for later. Another must stop and taste is Cane Mixers. These delicious mixers come in a variety of seasonal exotic flavors like Passion Fruit Jalapeño, and Guava Tiki Punch. Great in your favorite beverage or poured over ice . I didn't buy any this time, but I love mushrooms and they had some of the most beautiful fresh mushrooms I've seen in this area. The price point is also reasonable. They're definitely on my list for next Sunday! I believe new this season is the waffle stand. Can you say I had absolutely no intention of getting any waffles this morning, but when you see the batter being poured on the hot waffle maker and then coming off the griddle stuffed with your favorite toppings..... oooo baby I had to have one. I got one with mixed berry and bacon These waffles are so good you could eat them plain. I also noticed they make a sugar free waffle. I love that option for folks that have to watch the sugar. They have a cool tomato item called "bruised" that are a great value which are basically great tomatoes with a teeny tiny bruise that are a couple of dollars lower than perfect for $5 a quart in 2023. I've made tomato sandwiches, and Caprese salad's with them to Rave Reviews. In the spring, I have found Mandevilla's that are both tall and healthy and about 10 to 20% cheaper than anywhere else. I highly recommend Vince's.
