a christmas tree in a living room
Elizabeth G.

We've been buying Christmas trees from this farm for a long time at the corner of Shawan and Falls and it will always have a special place in my heart. It's part of family tradition, even though my kids are grown. The people who work there are unfailingly friendly, warm, and helpful, offering a reprieve from the sometimes stressful holiday season, a bright spot at the beginning of the long dark days of winter. So why am I writing a review after all these years? I walked through their Xmas tree lot this year and just didn't find the tree I was looking for on December 11. I was getting ready to leave and suddenly noticed a perfect tree at the front that must have been taken because it had a yellow tag tied to it. The gentleman who worked there said these were likely the last trees of the season till next year and asked if I'd found one. I pointed to the taken tree and said, "Wish that one wasn't claimed!" "It isn't! We just put it out --it's available but probably not for long. It's a nice one." It's seriously the most perfect Christmas tree I've ever had. It's so fragrant I've wondered daily for the last month if they somehow injected it with Frasier pine scent. it's dropped no needles and the branches are still fresh and upright. I do not want to take it down. Today is January 7th. I'll never go anywhere else as long as Misty Valley is still in business.

$7 worth of produce. 4 ears of corn, an onion, 2 tomatoes, some cucumbers and 2 squash.

Every single time I end up at Misty Valley Farms (or any of their numerous trucks/stands in the area), I feel like I'm stealing from them. The amount of good, local stuff you can get for $8 (an average buy at MVF for our household) is absolutely amazing. I usually get four ears of corn, some large tomatoes and some random veggies (onion or two, pepper or two, some pickles) for $8. The quality is very high in everything I've ever purchased here, and the taste matches the look. You can find their trucks and stands all over Baltimore County. The address listed here is the main stand... But they also have a truck that is consistently parked in front of the Cockeysville library, a small stand on Ruxton Rd near 83, and another one (I can't remember where it is).

I was eager to peruse to see what tasty treat I could grab. Parking was plentiful, but busy. I suggest you go as early as possible to secure a hassle free experience parking and market wise. Upon entering, the convergence of scents hit at once: desserts, bbq, popcorn. I wasn't mad at all. Our first stop was the bbq kiosk where we purchased a rack of ribs and wings. They have a variety of mini markets and food vendors in the building: bbq, seafood, spices, bakery, pickles items, clothing, furniture, butcher, handmade crafts, fresh made pretzels, etc. They also had an area to sit and enjoy your food purchases. We also picked up a half of a coconut cake, a slice of strawberry cheesecake, some apple butter and blackberry jam, and as we exited we got the glazed almonds and cashews. This place seems big, but it is manageable to walk around and check out all of the vendors. Upon tasting, our ribs were good: perfectly seasoned and fresh; the wings were rotisserie roasted and were good as well; the cake was just ok for us fresh with coconut flakes held on by white buttercream; the strawberry cheesecake was just ok; the glazed nuts were good as well. All in all, a nice market to visit for fresh, homemade food and unique crafts/gifts.

I mostly come with my husband to get produce but we've also gotten breakfast there and very well thought out pastries. You can get duck eggs sometimes and eggs from 2 or 3 vendors. If kettle corn is your thing, also something to pick up. The openness of the market and the friendliness of the veggies both edible and non is what makes us keep coming back. I've had beignets and oysters all in the same day.

If you only visit Lancaster for a few days this is one of the places you have to go. My favorite stands: 1) S. Clyde Weaver has insane specialty sandwiches and is one of my favorite delis. I typically get a large roast beef sandwich with mayo, lettuce, tomato, and the sweet bell peppers. The peppers are my favorite and I always ask for as many as they are legally allowed to give me. Caution: the large subs are ginormous so I usually eat half then save the rest for later. The bread holds up pretty well and doesn't get super soggy, but if you plan to eat it the next day, I would forgo the tomato which can get a bit slippery. 2) Kom Essa features the best breakfast sandwich around. It's greasy, but if that's something you don't mind, this is a must try. 2) Mean Cup is for anything coffee/caffeine related. This might be the best coffee in Lancaster. I practically give all my money to their storefront shop on Harrisburg Pike. 3) Shady Maple is the perfect stop for sweet treats: donuts, whoopie pies, etc. They used to have the best maple bacon long johns (hear me out) but I haven't seen them there for a while. 4) The Candy Stand is nostalgia central for me. Pretty much any type of candy you can think of, you can find there. This was a staple for me when I was younger. 5) Long's Horseradish features the best horseradish you can buy in a gagillion different flavors and variations.

Since it's been some time since I last shopped here, it was a treat browsing all the vendor stands and seeing what foods are available. As a garden/flower enthusiast, you know I had to check out the flower stands like Perfect Pots and Inspirational Blossoms, both with fresh blooms. For lunch, after a taste test, I opted for Soulcialze, which provided generous portions of mac n cheese, collards, beef brisket, and cornbread. Tables are provided for lunch or snacks, but we had to wait a few minutes because none were available. At Lancaster Central, you can expect a friendly atmosphere in this beautiful historic building, where the local community shops and supports. I usually secure parking via parking apps at the Hager lot or one of the two nearby parking garages.

It's right next to the playground at Christian Temple, so it is very kid-friendly! Walk into the parking lot and there is usually someone playing music (often a man playing the accordion) and two rows of stalls. The farmers are very friendly and offer a good variety of produce. Some are reasonably priced, others are a little more expensive than a store, but sometimes that's the price of supporting quality, local, small business! Most of the foods are produce, but there are a few places that sell meats, cheeses, and eggs. In addition to that, there are some vendors who sell soaps, honey, prepared foods like granola, and occasionally someone is selling wine/beer/mead. My son and I like to get pastries from Garrett, the Parisian pastry chef. Daunted? There's usually an info table with people sharing recipes, gardening tips, etc. At least some of the vendors accept food stamps, but I'm not sure if they all do. Short on cash? There's a stall where you can buy tokens with your card and use the tokens to purchase at the stalls. It's a small, but great farmer's market!

I find Wegmans to be one of the cheaper grocery stores in the area. They offer a lot of their own brand items which are very reasonably priced. Their vegetables and fruits, frozen items and fresh bread are all things I find to be competitive (if not better priced) with other grocery stores. Vegetarian selection. While other grocers have gone away from their own line of vegetarian/vegan items, Wegmans hasn't. They've got super reasonable vegan nuggets, chicken patties and spicy chicken patties. The nuggets come in both regular size and family size. Baked goods. We get my kids' birthday cakes at Wegmans. The ordering process is easy, they will do half chocolate and half vanilla for us and the icing is not as overly sweet as other places we've tried. They have done a decent job and, the one time they gave us the wrong flavor, they fixed the situation. There is a lot of other things I like about Wegmans. But the cakes, vegan/vegetarian options and prices stand out.
