This place would make for amazing karaoke night, one hell of a themed drag brunch, or an epic themed 80s party, but for a casual dinner spot...not so much. Other than the onion rings, the food was not personally my taste. It satisfied my hunger, but nothing more. On the other hand, the decor and other elements are pretty substantial. The bathrooms are kitschy, and decade specific (an appreciated extension of the dining space). 80s music videos play on giant televisions placed throughout the dining area. You can request songs (for a fee). 80s trivia sits at your table. Between the decor, trivia, and television, It's near impossible to be "bored". When I crave entertainment this place will work, however, if I'm craving a delicious meal, personally, I'll pass for now, but as usual, I'll be back. Vibe & layout - 5 stars. They really went all out and put a lot of thought into this 80's themed restaurant, from the 80's videos and music playing in the background. To the pink colored walls and diner tables, lockers from high school in the hallways on the way to the restroom. Pictures of '80s rock bands on the walls records so many things. Food: Fried pickles - 5 stars, I've actually never had them but these were, thon, crispy as heck, battered & super soul food seasoned, you can eat the whole basket with no problem they are so delicious! French toast - 3 stars, nothing spectacular, plain thin bread, not super cinnamon or very sweet, this dish falls flat. I could make better at home. Scrambled eggs - 3-stars, bland and just eggs I don't know why I was expecting more Spinach omelette - 3 stars, bland also, plain, not seasoned spinach in the middle of plain, not seasoned eggs, again could have made better at home. Besides the vibe I would not return. Cool spot to listen to music, maybe have a milkshake or something else. Service - 3-stars our young gentleman waiter was very slow and it wasn't crowded there. First time here the atmosphere was nice the music videos I felt like I was taken back to the 80's. I ordered the Wagyu Burger & fries it comes with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and fried egg it was delicious. I asked for a cherry coke but the machine was broken they only had can cokes. The waiter was helpful explaining the menu, I had a drink afterwards. It was a Hurricane and it was good, the bar is nice. Overall all I enjoyed my experience, it's a bit pricey for 3 people I paid about $100 bucks. But we are guys we eat a lot. It's fun I didn't get to try the shakes they looked pretty good. Now if we were just rating the atmosphere and decorations, this place would be a 5 star restaurant. They literally knock the 80s theme out of the park. However, if you want to eat something tasty, on time, or have a waiter, then this isn't the place. When I went with a group, our waitress brought us coffee, which was pretty gross and acidic. We sent those back and I asked for a soda instead. It was flat and I was like, nope not even trying anymore. I think at that point, our waitress no longer wanted to try working or the restaurant didn't know what to do with her. She injured herself, and forgot our table for the rest of the night. Another waiter we flagged said she was injured and had to leave, but she was just serving a huge group of about 16-20 earlier. Speaking of huge groups, because I was by the door that 80s bam bam, chicka chicka, noise is cute until you hear it 800 times, because there is never a server there waiting for people. One group of patrons complained saying they had a reservation, which the restaurant forgot about apparently. Later, we're sent the wrong order, have to do it again, and they look so bothered by everything. The nacho fries were pretty gross, like cafeteria school quality. Like I wanted to go back to the 80s not have the food of the 80s. The waffle was okay. Okay is not good enough for bougie prices and terrible service. One friend had to find silverware for our table, and another one kept trying to beg any waiter to refill drinks or anything. We weren't even a large group, like the group of 16 by the wall. By the time we got our checked, because I kinda begged the overworked looking Hugh Grant lookalike to help us, a waiter came and was mad when he saw that none of the orders were entered right and excused himself. I kinda was nosy and paid attention to what he was doing and it was full on American Soap Opera, like you know our original waitress did something wrong, and I don't know if anyone there knew what to do with her. If it was me, I would have sent her home if she was that badly injured and given the table to someone else. But having her try to do both tables with a presumed injury....I mean who does that? Everyone gets screwed over in that scenario, because the waiter stuck with her table was so grouchy by the time the Hugh Grant look alike told him to help us. I was ready to get out of there as soon as possible. My husband the comedian was like, I'd come back if they comped up a meal for six, because they ignored our group. Nope, not even if they comped our table of six next time, because as far as I'm concerned, there will be no next time. It's really sad, because the theme and execution of it is done so well. However, since it's in Washington Ave and people might just be eating there after the club not noticing the food and service sucks, it may stay open longer than they should. read more

Hungry Like the Wolf grabs you the door with their bold decor! I have no memories of the 1980s, so I can't say if this restaurant accurately replicates it, but I can say I've never felt as thrown into The Max as I did during my visit. While a lot of Houston restaurants are struggling with service these days, HLTW is on top of it! Non-stop refills and our server constantly checked in on us. I see some mixed reviews out there, but no complaints here. We did have to wait a little while for the food, but the front of house team was doing all they could to keep guests happy. Also, I fell for the pun-heavy menu. Unfortunately, the food was pretty lackluster. I would describe it as food you'd find at a office building cafeteria. Not awful, but not food you'd seek out, and definitely not worth paying $16.99 for a sandwich. I got a wrap which was fine, but I'm pretty sure the side of chips it came with were from a grocery store (my guess aided by the fact there was a bottle of Kroger brand ketchup on my table). This is more like 3.5 stars. I really wish this place a lot of success. How can I not love an 80s themed diner?!!? But I feel like they might be a casualty of the pandemic, through no fault of their own. And that's unfortunate. The other end? The food is basic, and the drinks were not well executed at all. How can you serve a drink called Ectoplasm...and it's not green?? The plus side? 80s music, videos and paraphernalia all over. The bathrooms were Ms PAC Man for the ladies and PAC Man for the guys. So lots of clever stuff. And when you open and close the door, Yello's "Oh Yeah" from Ferris Bueller plays. Staff? Our server was very nice. The hostess/bartender was pretty rude. I don't need anyone to kiss up to me - saying Hello and smiling costs nothing. I assume the manager/owner - a guy - was super cool. He gets it. Yet when we did talk to the staff, they were hit hard by the later waves of the panini. It wasn't busy, and they were closing early that day. I felt bad. This is an 80s dreamland! Hungry Like the Wolf was featured on Localish awhile back and I had made a mental note to go, but then of course forgot. My friends and I had just went to the Infinite Experience and were looking for a place to eat. Some of my friends suggested trying out Hungry Like the Wolf. I had actually been to this place when it was some other bar a few years ago, but it's completely different. From the moment you walk in, you are transformed into the 80s. Not only is the playlist 80s music of all genres, they also show the music video like it used to be on MTV. When we walked in, there was a group of people at the bar singing along, having a grand ole time and it was awesome lol. We didn't have to wait long to be seated, but once we were, it took awhile for our server to come over with water. Once she did, the service improved. The names of some of the menu items are throw back references to 80s musicians, movies, music, and culture. I had the Optimus Prime burger (Transformers reference) with fries and a bottle of Crawford Bock (which was really good with the burger). My burger was really good, but the bottom pieces of bread were soggy. There could have been a little more fries, but I did have some of my friend's onion rings (aka Molly Onion Ring Wald lol). The décor is amazing and I wish I would have taken a moment to walk around and look at everything, but it was late and I was ready to get home. The best part is the door chime. We didn't hear it when we walked in, but when we left, we died laughing. It was the "chicka chicka" from the song "Oh Yeah" featured in Ferris Bueller. Apparently they have karaoke every Tuesday so I may have to come back for that. I honestly don't know how the employees don't sing and dance all day long. Loved the 80's vibe and service, the food...not so much. We made an effort to ride the Metro from downtown Houston, to come to this restaurant because of its name and promise of a unique dining experience. I scouted out the menu beforehand, and knew that a lot of the items had 80's famous names as puns. I just wanted to try it, since both of us grew up in the 80's and understood the jokes (even though the food itself had nothing to do with the name). The restaurant was pretty empty when we came for a late lunch around 1pm. Marrio was our server, and he greeted us promptly and let us sit where we wanted. He was great throughout, keeping our beverage filled and making sure we had what we needed. There is a large tv, showing what MTV was in the early 80's before it became a place just for reality tv. It was 80's music videos, in all it's low-def glory...and I really enjoyed it. We had fun identifying the songs, sharing trivia with our 19 year old nephew (who himself knows a lot about the 80's from talking to his parents). The restaurant is kinda set-up as a diner, and the menu had classic diner food. We ordered three things: optimus prime burger med well ($17.99) that came with fries; 1 rocky iii cheesesteak ($18.99), and bowl of roasted tomato soup ($7.99). With tip and tax, the total came to about $60 bucks. All the foodwere cafeteria quality, ingredients sourced from a food vendor like Sysco...nothing wrong with that, but in that case it's way too expensive. The hamburger was obviously cooked from a frozen patty, and had basic ingredients. The fries were well cooked. The soup tasted like it came from a can: very rich and would have been OK as a dunk with grilled cheese sandwich, but not good by itself...we barely touched it. The cheesesteak had plenty of melted cheese on top, a little bit of well cooked onion and green peppers, and an average amount of beef slices. The taste was fine, but it was really dry (the cheese was too thick to provide much moisture). Would have been better with either cheeze whiz or some au jus. I'm thinking that if one comes at night, and partakes liberally of the bar, it would be a better experience (though probably still pretty expensive). If it is strictly based on the food, it's an expensive miss (especially since it took some effort to get here)...but loved the mutual dining companions, so for me presonally, it ended up still being worthwhile. read more

There's a jumbo screen that plays 80s music videos and the restrooms are themed as well, there's also a cute little flush button on the wall. It may be a touchless sensor but if it is, it didn't work lol. I ordered the Texas Cheesesteak and it was super delicious. I was hungry so I completely forgot to stop and take a picture. My daughter and I love coming here since moving into the city, it's our "mommy/daughter" go-to spot. I get to have my 80s nostalgia moments, and my daughter just thinks it has an awesome vibe . I also love controlling the Playlist for a couple 80s videos. We recently had the pleasure of attending drag bingo last week, with the most beautiful hostess​ Rachel Bit@hface. There was no age restriction listed, so I did ask if it was ok for my teen child to come, and there was no issue. Rachel was very mindful, and extremely courteous to all in attendance. Apparently there was a change in management since last dining, and understanding that I'm sure that they are trying to make menu changes. Change is good, but also takes time. In all honesty...I saw this place at 2am on my FYP on TikTok lol. Came the next day and wasn't let down! My wife and I did date night here and we had a great time! We hung out at the bar top and did some drinking and eating. I totally recommend asking the bartenders to just "make something" as everything is similarly priced. My wife had the Kelly lebrock fried chicken sandwich and she said it was really good. They did mess up on her chicken sandwich but quickly made it right with us. I will say that the service is very good and very prompt. I ended up eating their Optimus Prime Burger. I must say that it was TOTALLY WORTH IT! This place is so fun place to go to. I cannot help sing, dance, and appreciate all the 80's details throughout the restaurant. The servers are super sweet and excited to show people all the specials that they have and the cool interactive components of the restaurant. You can pretty much skip this place entirely. There's a kitschy vibe and a decent soundtrack, but that's about the only reason to come here. The food and service are horrendous by even roadside diner standards, but the prices are at least twice as high as you'd find elsewhere. We ordered coffee and got acidic dregs from the bottom of the pot. Almost no sugar or Splenda at the table. Copious amounts of water and creamer couldn't save it, so we sent them back. Waitress disappeared for a long time before coming back realizing that one more of our party had arrived. This was a regular occurrence. At one point she returned with a finger wrapped because she cut her hand. Not sure what the other delays were for. For a starter we ordered Nacho Fries. Instead we were served regular nachos. They were already cold and soggy before the waitress finally returned. We got the correct item almost an hour after being seated, and the end result was forgettable. Generic nacho cheese and some weird red stuff underneath that wasn't mentioned on the menu. Fries were greasy. My wife ordered the Pretty in Pink Waffle and I ordered the Purple Rain pancake. Both were decent, which was probably the highlight of an otherwise atrocious meal. We were never given any silverware so I had to go to the host stsnd and fetch some myself. Two others in our party ordered burgers. Neither were impressed-- decent food but not worth $18. The guy who ordered a salad got his meal about 40 minutes after ordering. We had to fetch him a fork too. Waitress came by at one point, refilled one person's water, and then left. Rest of us were sitting with empty drinks. She disappeared. The rest of the staff was preoccupied with one large party. One person in our party was profusely apologizing because he'd been the one who recommended the place but it clearly had dropped in food quality, service, and affordability since his last visit. If you want to go sit in a place with a retro 80s soundtrack and a Rubik's Cube chandelier, eat mediocre-to-terrible overpriced food, wait forever for service and refills, etc. then this place might be for you. Honestly, go to Denny's, or IHOP, or Waffle House, or Avalon, and just play some 80s music off an app. You'll spend a heck of a lot less, and the food and service will be much better. read more

Anyone who is an 80s baby or loves the 80s will feel right at home at Hungry Like the Wolf. The decor inside is so fun, and everything from the music to the menu item names really commits to the theme. I had one of the best meatball subs I've ever tasted, and their fried mushrooms were also really tasty. The menu is definitely that of a diner, so if you're looking for lighter options, it's not the place to go. TV screens playing 80s music videos are everywhere - with an iconic photo series of phoebe cates on the wall! Brought my dad here and he absolutely loved it. Notably the bathrooms each have huge posters of hot 80s celebrities (picture shirtless Tom Cruise posters in the women's bathroom hahah) Food is everything you'd expect about diner quality cuisine ~ unhealthy and indulgent. The atmosphere of this place is great. I also think with the exception of understandable hiccups, the service was above par. Unfortunately the food was a bit flavorless. The oreo shake was like milked down or something. The chicken especially lacked even salt on both the chicken and waffles and the chicken fried chicken. The grilled veggies were ok. Because we had been moving furniture up 3 flights of stairs, we literally were hungry like the wolf, so what a great place to go to satiate my appetite. Since the weather in our beloved H-town has been AH-MAZING the last 2 days, we sat on the patio, which we had all to ourselves. The service here is excellent, from start to finish and we had Jeff as our waiter. He suggested some fried pickles, and we did not decline that suggestion. They came out with a side of ranch. OMG they were delicious and honestly the serving size could be the meal itself for just 2 people LOL! I ended up getting the Yo! MTV Raps wrap with grilled chicken. It's served with lettuce, tomato and bacon and it was so freakin' tasty!! You also get chips or fries, I opted for chips but should have opted for neither as I was so. darn. full. and did not even finish the chips. The husband ordered the nachos and added chicken. The chips and the queso are made fresh, and the nachos themselves were T-A-S-T-Y!!! The atmosphere was fun. The servers were friendly and attentive. The food was great! I can't complain since I was served hot and fresh food. The cheese sticks were yummy! I especially enjoyed that tasty marinara sauce. If they had calamari on the menu I would have been super happy to order that as an appetizer with dipping that yummy marinara sauce! Oh yeah, the batter on the chicken is just right on this dish. It wasn't thick nor heavy. The green beans had a slight crunch to them so they were not overcooked. We live near by and always thought about coming here but for some odd reason never did! But glad we did! The place is super cool concept and the service was great! We ordered the same thing to eat! But started off with fried pickles and they were good! The batter was just right and crispy and it was a hefty portion too! We had the patti melt burger and my god it was delicious! The fries were thin and crispy but had lots of flavor! The atmosphere makes you feel like you are in an 80s movie and vibe is really really cool! I think the waiters are one of the nicest people also I've encountered! The music in the restaurant also makes the vibe become more real! This place is for sure on my top to go to in Houston! A great idea, but unfortunately the place ends up a gimmicky, overpriced, very average experience. Food was average, plain bar food (under-seasoned might be the best description) but way overpriced. There were all of four tables and we still had to work hard to get our waiter over to us. Will never go back and would not recommend. read more
