My husband and I frequent Paso so much, we come to town several times a year and we both enjoy wine very much. We wanted to try something new as we were driving and stumbled upon Shale Oak Winery, they were fully booked and had no availability and suggested we drive down the road to Hunt Cellars. We arrived and were immediately greeted, everyone was super friendly and we were seated outside. I believe they had a special event because they were serving light bites and great music! The atmosphere was absolutely a treat. We had such a great time tasting all the wines and had good conversation with Stan. He was attentive and gave us a lot of good information on all the different pours. We even got the opportunity to try some delicious ports. All in all the experience was great and we left as members of Hunt Cellar. We got into the conversation as to why we were visiting Paso and mentioned we were celebrating and anniversary. Stan was super kind and brought out a gift which was very much appreciated. A few days after our visit we received a cute welcome card and a hand written note from Stan. Above and beyond service and the wine is outstanding, a must visit charm in Paso Robles. The Port's are phenomenal, to this day my husband talks about how great they were although we bought some. Wow! What a find. I was at another much more popular winery and was recommended this place. The owner is very good at what he does and is blind. I did not get a chance to meet the owner on my visit, but I got to meet his great staff. They were super nice and they opened up bottles for us to try that I would not assume any winery would open just so that random people could try. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who likes wine or ports. Delicious on both fronts. The cost is a little higher than most places I go but the wine is worth it. I actually got a 2004 vintage last year so it might actually be less expensive than it should. I have recommended this place to many other people and have not heard a bad report back. read more

My girlfriend is a member here and they pulled out all the stops for our tasting. They went through the entire list, had extras in there, brought us down to the cellar to try two right out of the barrels and basically let us have seconds. I don't know wine, but it seems everyone was very satisfied and most everyone bought bottles. There were a couple of couples coming through and tasting and they were treated nicely as well from what I could tell. The grounds are beautiful and the room is comfortable. They also had a solo musician playing a variety of instruments and that was nice. Definitely worth checking out, and even more so if you're with a member who is beloved by the staff. read more

After reading Akiko I's review of this winery, it was a must see. Oddly, we were just passing by as I was reading her review out loud to Mr. B (aka driver). The car suddenly swerved sharply to the left, and lo and behold, there we were! I don't need to say anything, really. Akiko's review was quite thorough, and Mr. B found her notes to be very helpful. His final purchases were a Chardonnay, a Merlot, and a Merlot port. He was quite pleased and gives Hunt, and Akiko, two thumbs up! read more

Hunt cellars offers a beautiful homey environment, surrounded by the gorgeous rolling hills of Paso. Upon entering the staff was very friendly and gave us a truly unique experience. We were chatting and conversing with the employee named Andrea and we were all having a wonderful time. This being my first wine tasting experience, I truly enjoyed her knowledge and unique ways of describing the varietals. Me being new, I was not familiar with all the dos and don'ts of wine tasting and boy did I get schooled and embarrassed in front of my group of friends. NEVER wash out a wine glass with water, this is breaking a cardinal rule. She is a lovely lady, but could do with treating newbies with a little bit more respect and forego the scene for something so menial I left feeling ashamed for something that could have been handled differently. I purchased wine from here and enjoyed it, but would not return because of this experience. read more

We had a good time wine tasting at Hunt. The host, Dave, was very friendly and personable. The wines were all very good; we were very happy with the selections we bought. The only thing that could made this a total mind blower would have been David Hunt playing the piano! And after the wines two ports! A must stop on the 46 for an amazing experience, whether you are new to wine or a wine geek. I visit probably 100 or so wineries a year and this is definitely in the top tier in terms of wine, people, fun, atmosphere. Great and friendly service. - Gluttony Expedition - $10 for 6 kinds. $15 for 6 kinds of premier wine. Great deal! Go for the premium, of course! Since I love their wine so much, they let me taste a lot more than usual ;) (Thanks to me, Fine dinning steak restaurant in NB Marriott carries their wine now!) 04 Sangiovese rhapsody: It has a medium acidity and nice balanced wine. It's a bit heavier Sangiovese than the ones you normally get. Smokey, butterscotch, strawberries. 06 Thriller: Blend of sirah, merlot and zinfandel. Fruity with medium body. I love it ;) 04 petit sirah: Smoky, plum, dark berries, caramel like finish. Light with a little acidity. 04 merlot Unforgettable: Smoky oak, vanilla, dark cherry, and plum. Well balanced wine. Medium heavy body. Good. 05 Cabernet Sauvignon Cabovation: Cassis, well balanced, well finish. (01 is a lot better and I loved it) Zinfandel Port: Dark chocolate. Full of aromas with complexity. This is just incredible. 05 Chardonnay Moonlight Sonata: Mild chard oak, heavy in aromas, honey golden color. Nice citrusy touch, though less fruity aromas than other wine. Good. N' cinq Blanc: Not on the list. Wild flowers. Light and smooth. Interesting. 05 Sauvignon blanc: Heavy French oak. Rich, honey sweetness and very nice wine. I wanna chill it. Rose: Dark in color. Heavy, high acidity, well balanced wine. But I don't like this. 02 Zinfandel Outlaw Ridge: blueberry, licorice, black berries. Too acidic for me. 01 Cabernet Sauvignon Bon Vivant: Wild cherries, cassis, smooth yet nice body. (I didn't like 05. This is the classic example of the amazing effect of aging wine) 07 Rocket Man Zinfandel: Light, high acidity. Not bad. Syrah port Sweet Serenade: Nice acidity, muscat, light. - Conqueror's Deduction - I'm a certified sommelier, drink all kinds of wine from all over the world and can't drink alcohol much. When I taste wine, I spit, not swallow. (Because I get tipsy and want to focus on the tastes). But I can't help swallowing most of their wine here ;) It's that good. If you were blind folded, you might think these wine were from old world - they have not only amazing fruity aromas but also depth & complexities. It's just incredible. The owner, David, is BLIND. His wine making is just amazing. I do recommend this winery to anyone who don't believe wine is tasty and amazing. These wine will tell you how awesome wine can be. I believe this winery is the best winery in CA. (I tried bunch) Their wine is superb. I'm their unofficial spokesman of "Hunt Cellars". This is totally hidden gem. Opus one? - Forget it. Compared with these wine, it's just a crap. Don't waste your time and money in Napa and other wineries. This is truly amazing wine. Their tasting price is pretty amazing in Paso and their wine is a lot cheaper than other crappy reserved wine at other wineries. Their wine isn't cheap but do worth your every $ and more. It's hard to find a bad winery in Paso, and Hunt is no exception. We arrived after 5, and it looks like they must have responded to an earlier reviewer's frustration at getting there just before 5 only to find them closed, as we were warmly received by an older gentleman server at about 5:30. The tasting we had here was very good, but at the end of our trip, so the wine budget was just about maxed out. We'll come back again at the beginning of our trip next time to get a fresh perspective. One word of advice, though - two bathrooms, please! I had to do a little dance while waiting for a certain someone to leave . . . sometimes those whites just go right through you. ;-) read more

A friend and I stopped for a tasting. Our schedule was very tight and we had planned to hit a few wineries in the Paso area. I had called Hunt Cellars and made sure they were open until 5pm. So, we pull in and I check the time on my cell phone, it is 4:47pm. Close, but plenty of time. We walk in, the doors are open. We then find the lights are off. We look around a bit and found two ladies in a back room. They said they closed at 5pm. I told her it was not 5pm. She just looked at us and we left. No apologies or anything. We found a place down the road that appeared open. Even though it was now after 5pm and they were closed, they welcomed us in and we chatted and sipped some vino until almost 6pm. This is what wine tasting is about. I have tasted in well over 100 rooms in California. I have never been treated so rudely as I was at Hunt Cellars. People in this business should have a passion for wine and love to share it with others. The folks at Hunt Cellars could care less. I talked to a supplier back in LA. He confirmed that Hunt Cellars really thinks their product is the best and they are arrogant and in reality it is far from the best. This is coming from a guy who is a certified Sommelier. I would avoid this place. There are so many great wineries in central cal and the Paso area. Try Turley down the road from here. They can be a little snooty but their product is awesome. read more

I want to say that this review is about our experience in Hunt Cellars tasting room and not about their wines whatsoever. I think David Hunt is an amazing winemaker. We first heard about Hunt Cellars last year at the Central Coast Wine Classic. After tasting their wine there we were duly impressed and decided to make the drive the next day out to Paso for a few purchases. I'm glad we did. Their wine is amazing! We especially love their Port and bought several bottles of wine when we were there along with their Port. With that being said we were SUPER excited to visit Hunt Cellars again this year on our annual trip. Upon entering the tasting room there was only one other couple at the bar so it wasn't crowded. Amber was behind the bar and didn't even make eye contact with us or say hello. She did finally acknowledge us and asked if we were familiar with the wine. Once I mentioned we were there last year she then said, "well you know the drill then" and proceeded to lay out 3 pieces of paper in front of us. No explanation no nothing. Then about 60 seconds later she proceeded to ask us what will we have. I barely had time to read all the paperwork she set in front of us let alone to make a decision about what tasting or what wine we were interested in. From there it went all down hill. She just seemed like she was completely put out about having to be behind the bar. We did buy a couple of bottles but ONLY because of the product, MOST definitely not because of the customer service. We left there feeling deflated and disappointed in our experience. It's too bad because we really enjoy the wine. Left us with a sour taste in our mouth. read more

I've dabbled into many wines in the 10 years I've been introduced... Ups, downs and all a rounds... Personally speaking, I can honestly say that Hunt Cellars is by far a shock and awe! The taste has class with a cult type admiration... I'm a fan of the red but can say that that I've tinkered into the whites as well... Thanks to my wife... Suggestion, try Thriller, Benchmark, Zinfandel Rocketman (2007) and tsk, tsk, my favorite... "Time in a Bottle"... This is not a 5 star rating... A 10+! Prices are great and the savor is better!!! AMAZING!!!! First time in Paso. This was the fourth vineyard we visited. "Grape" went above and beyond to give us the best service and tasting at a winery that we have ever had. We visit Temecula regularly and have been to Napa, but Hunt Cellars is our new favorite. The ports were unbelievable. The Chardonnay was delicious (and we were excited to find a chard as most around here only serve reds). We also enjoyed the 2010 Malbec and the 2010 Cabovation. All were delicious. This may well be my favorite winery that I have visited. I will say that it does not have the scenery or charm of some of the wineries in the area, but the wines are incredible and the staff is amazing. Willy was such a character and a really nice guy. We just did the regular tasting, but they still let us try some wine off the premium menu for no extra charge. We even got to have a zinfandel port "shooter." This is basically a little shot of the Zinfandel Port in a little shot glass made of chocolate. So good! The Syrah we tried off the reserve menu (que syrah syrah) was one of the best wines I have ever tasted. But everything was pretty much awesome. I ended up buying a bottle of the Rockin Red blend and a bottle of the Outlaw Zinfandel (it was discounted at only $12!) Overall the wines here are pretty expensive, but it makes complete sense considering how amazing they are. This is definitely a must on any wine expedition in Paso. read more

We stopped here as our 4th stop on our tour with the Wine Line, and I wasn't expecting a lot....just to taste and go. But, wait! What's this? Vintage wines that are being sold at a discount? A $70 bottle of 2001 Cab Sav selling for $40?!? One taste, and it blew my socks off. The rest of the wines were ok, but that wine was worth the trip. It was the most expensive bottle of wine I've ever bought, and I plan to savor every last drop. Definitely worth the trip if you're in the area. read more

Bottom line, the tasting room is professionally and warmly run and they are making things right. After spending a good amount of time tasting and chatting, we were reminded of what we first fell in love with. Amazing wines! Our favorites are the Syrah's, Zin's and Cabs. Thank you so very much for the hospitality and professionalism. We've found a long lost love. OLD REVIEW: I am extremely disappointed by the fairly "new" Hunt Management team. I was a member and suspended my membership. I realized they double billed me some time ago for an in house order. They couldn't find the transaction and wouldn't refund the second charge. Around the same time, they failed to send me a shipment I paid for. When I asked them to make it right, they said they had NO RECORD of me ever having been a member. I spent thousands of dollars there and they can't even do right by me. I even sent them a copy of the bank records. So disappointed by their lack of record keeping and integrity. read more

As my boyfriend so eloquently captured it, "That was old-Paso wine [mediocre & not terribly interesting] at new-Paso prices [$30-50/bottle]." Since we've all got different palates, I won't try to convince you that Hunt is "bad" wine and the wine I tend to like is "good" wine. I like wine that is complex, has good structure and acidity, and has a lot of interesting things going on in the nose as well as the flavor. I dislike wine that is overly sweet, has really only one or two flavors going on, or tastes mainly like fermented grape juice. The wine we had at Hunt struck me as simplistic (there wasn't much to taste once you got past the fruit & alcohol), too sweet, and lacking in structure. If that's what you like, then you'll probably enjoy it, but it was not for me. If someone was serving Hunt's wine free at a social event, I'd probably nurse a glass; it certainly wasn't undrinkable. Still, I wouldn't go out of my way to pay money for it again. It was $5 for 6 tastes and we decided we were done after 5. (Also, I'm also not sure where the reviewer stating that Hunt wines have some of the "highest points & awards in the Paso area" got her information. That is just patently false.) read more

Drove up to Hunt Cellars after a recommendation from a good friend with a great palate. We were staying in San Luis Obispo, and intended to taste at a couple vineyards before making the drive back to LA. Upon pulling into the empty parking lot at Hunt, I raised a skeptical eyebrow at the underwhelming look of the place - it lacks all the charm and character of so many of the tasting rooms we visited. But you can't judge a book by it's cover. So we ventured in. We had the place to ourselves, and the full attention of Willy - probably one of the most friendly and welcoming winery staffers I could ever hope to meet. He let us take our time, chatting us up along the way, giving us history of the winery, the owner and his personal thoughts on each of the wines. I loved that all the bottles offered have been left to age a good deal longer than most other vineyards - instead of sipping on 08's & 09's, we were sampling '02's and '04's - the difference in taste was astounding but the prices weren't off the chart. Everything I tasted was excellent. Hard to buy one bottle here - so I went ahead and signed up for membership, naturally :) Our tastes were so satisfied here that we decided not to hit any other wineries - it was THAT good. If you're in the area, Hunt cannot be missed. If you're not in the area, consider working this into a road trip...right nowww. What they lack in showy grounds and fancy labels (good god their labels are tacky) they make up for tenfold (hundredfold!) in taste. read more

I have visited Hunt Cellars several times now. It is a MUST stop for anyone visiting Paso. Out of all the wineries my group visited, we all picked Hunt Cellars as our favorite stop and had to come back again! The 2007 Cab-Ovation was the BEST Cabernet I have ever tasted and had to come back to buy myself a couple of bottles. The staff was extremely friendly and it was a great overall experience every time I have stopped in. Jessica and Victoria were great and knowledgeable about these wines. I recommend trying the full list of wines since my whole group thoroughly enjoyed them. Tasting is $10 for the reserve wines but since we bought wine, they were able to comp our tastings! The tasting room is on the smaller side but is cozy and inviting. read more

I adore this winery. The first time I came here I was in awe and decided next time I came I'd join the Hunt Club, so I did. The wine pourers are extremely knowledgable and kind. You can ask them all kinds of questions, and they have an answer. Now some may say their wine is a bit pricey ($30-$80), but you have to keep in mind, they serve wines from the early 2000's!!! For that reason, I would describe their prices as a deal!! Wine tasting is $10 for 6 tastes, $15 for the reserve, which I totally recommend. There is beautiful seating here. Enough to bring a family, have a bbq, play bocce ball, etc. I do not work here, just a huge advocate of amazing wineries. You are truly missing out if you have not visited Hunt Cellars. read more

We came back to my favorite winery after being away for 15 years. We found this little winery when we were dating and toured Paso Robles. The owner and wine maker is blind, so his other senses are heightened. I love the Hunt reds more then any other wines on earth. 15 years later, my husband and I drive up to Hunt winery again. The small, casual meeting room is very inviting. The bartender sat and discussed all the wines. I picked the red flight, because that is what Paso Robles is all about. Don't drink white in Paso Robles (Yuck!). This is the only wine my non-wine drinking hubby will drink. He loves the reds at Hunt. This winery is a MUST visit to anyone visiting Paso Robles area!! My girlfriend and I came to Cambria for a couples getaway that we purchased from travelzoo. The travelzoo deal included wine tastings at 6 different vineyards and this was one of them! Our host was Amber, and she was great! She was knowledgeable and very patient, which was a good thing because we were having trouble choosing which wines to taste. The wine was superb! We ended up leaving with two bottles for a great price! This winery serves you wine with pretzels and chocolate to cleanse the pallet and pair with certain wines. Their wine was absolutely great - we didn't have a single one that we didn't like (let alone love)! We arrived around 4:15 on a Sunday and they close at 5pm. They never made us feel rushed, however, and took the time to really explain each wine to us, talk to us about the owner, etc. One of the best wine-tasting experiences we've had! I always say that this region is better for the family-owned, homey, less-distributed wines and Hunt is a great example of all of the above. I'll start by saying we all have different palates... but... I don't get the reviews of this place. The wines are ridiculously over-priced. I mean seriously, seriously, over-priced. David Hunt (the winemaker) thinks you're stupid. That's the only excuse for charging $75 for a bottle of '04 Cab that's sub-par to 60% of the other wines in the valley (in my opinion). They like to boast their "96 points". And I've seen reviewers talk about "96 points" and "highest awarded winery". Do you guys even know what you are talking about? That's not 96 points from Robert Parker, trust me. Now I don't think the wines are bad. They're ok. And the pour staff is really nice. (Especially the older gentleman that used to pour there a few years ago). But you can find much better wine at more reasonable prices all over Paso. Paso this one by. I get a sense that a few of the reviewers on here look at the price and think "oh this must be really good wine". :( read more

They seem to make a lot more variety of wines that when we were in their wine club 5-6 years ago, but more isn't necessarily better. I think quality has slipped a lot. They claim some outstanding review scores, but they're not from Parker, Tanzer, or Wine Enthusiast. They're from the "Beverage Tasting Institute" or something like that. Been coming to Wine taste in Paso Robles for 6 years. Came in on My Birthday 5/24/2015. We LOVED it.! The wine is so delicious and different then anything else in Paso Robles. Amber was great and went into the cellar and let us try a 2004 Chardonnay. We ended up buying 6 bottles and joined the Wine Club. I can NOT WAIT to come back the end of August to take our engagement pictures. The Port is so Yummy. We are saving the 2006 Syrah. My favorite is the Cirq d Blanc.
