This is more of a small restaurant than an actual store. We went by looking for some camping supplies and meat, but found a lot less to choose from. Although the restaurant part looked pretty pleasing, the name was a little misleading. Not sure about the quality of the food because we didn't stay to eat there. Saw this featured on the Daytripper today, and it inspired me to write this more realistic review. Stopped by about a month ago, and it was very creepy. Everyone in he place ignored us, and we were the only people wearing masks in the place. We were looking for a place to eat lunch, but as they worked so hard make us feel I welcomed, we just grabbed a couple of sodas and took them up to the counter to pay. The staff looked at us but made no effort to ring up our purchases and We stood there while they continued their gossiping (probably talking about the time they played banjo on "Deliverance"). The Hunt store is the only show in this one dog town. It's both convenience store and cafe. It's one of the only places to gather and resupply. So get you batteries, band aids, and beer (I'm a sucker for alliteration), but don't you dare forget about the burgers. Some of the best summers of my life were planned and retold over those bisected tree trunk tables while holding a juicy cheeseburger. These burgers aren't going to blow you away. But if you've been on the river since that morning, these burgers are life savers. And the vibe is just classic country store, because that is exactly what it is. We were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant in Hunt, TX. We went on Friday and there was a great acoustic show by a Texas country singer. They have a simple menu with burgers and things that you can order the counter and also a sit down menu with more upscale items. We sat down and ordered lots of things and they were all delicious. We had crab cakes, bacon wrapped quail, wild axis fingers with gravy (just like steak fingers) and then the pork chop with an apple glaze sauce and mashed potatoes. Again, everything was top notch but just thinking about those axis fingers right now has my mouth watering! The service was also great and everyone in the place was having fun and listening to the music. If you are in the area I highly recommend coming here if want an wonderful meal. Great little store out in Hunt, TX. If you're in the area, I recommend a quick stop in. They have all of the things you'd expect to find in a gas station, along with a full service restaurant in the back. Also has a cool back patio that often features live music. Right up my alley. read more

The owner was nice, but didn't make up for the lack of service at the counter. I stopped by with a group of bikers, and maybe they were overwhelmed, but I won't be there again. There was a puffy taco place down the street I'll try next time. What happened? I asked for a salad and a quarter pound of their sliced brisket. It's on the menu (meat by the pound). When I asked for the meat, I confused the boy behind the counter. He kept telling me to get the sliced on the bun. I don't eat wheat, and I told him I just wanted the meat. He took the salad off. No, I want the salad and the meat. He said to order it with the bun. Uh, NO. I ended up with just a salad. Later, I went to get a bag of chips and spoke to the owner. He admitted the kid was a bit of a jerk. So, why is he still working there? Put him in the back, where he doesn't have to talk to the customers... We won't be back. Stopped in on a recommendation from a fella in Ingram, where we were staying. Asked for the "fancy" menu, since the posted one above the counter was regular burgers and such. Wife got chicken fried steak, I got shrimp and grits. Both meals were great and not what you would expect to get from a roadside gas station, bank, general store, restaurant all rolled up into one. But if you think the food is going to be any good, you're kidding yourself. It's the same old stuff. Nothing wrong with it, but it's one more burger and one more serving of curly fries. This location currently does not serve food on Mondays. The store is open but not the restaurant. Be sure and plan accordingly as this is not clear on the website. The stars are for the scattered inventory of food and dry goods in the store and an ATM outside. First of all, I'd like to add that I would never expect making such a negative remark towards a business because I know all that entails to run a business. SO... I came here with a group of 10, to simply purchase bottled water for our day at the river. (We had intentions to come back to the Hunt Store in the evening to enjoy a nice dinner.) Unfortunately, none of us will be returning here again. The moment we walked in a "strawberry blonde" woman (for readers sake, let's call her Pinky, as she was wearing a pink shirt) behind the desk, darted her cold eyes towards one of our female friends, pursed her lips together and snarled "You need to cover up!" ... (Keep in mind, this is an establishment that is walking distance from the river where people are often seen wearing...*gasp*...Yes! Believe it or not...bathing suits!) But our friend was not in bathing suit, she was wearing a halter tank top with a skirt that went down to her ANKLES. Are halter tops not common to wear while spending a day out at the water? During this time of year this is not an uncommon occurrence. I understand her choice of clothing may not have been appropriate for Carnegie Hall but please, this was in no way inappropriate or offensive considering the setting we were in, the temperature outside and the time of year! We were watching people wearing MUCH less than her tank top and skirt (which I will mention again, went down to the ankles). .... Several customers heard Pinky shouting with a look of disgust on her face, which called for more unnecessary attention. To our shock and embarrassment, we all left and decided to take our business elsewhere where we were welcomed with smiling faces. We were inside the Hunt Store no longer than 1 minute and already out the door. The middle aged woman behind the counter had a very rude demeanor from the moment we walked in, so smile, no hello, she did not approach us and calmly tell us that there was a dress-code for customers. (There are no signs outside that inform anyone about a dress-code and in fact, I later learned people come in there wearing BATHING SUITS all the time). I don't know what sparked Pinky to want to attack our friend. She was absolutely unwelcoming, uninviting and unprofessional handling a situation in a businesslike setting. Eventually we all thought about it after we left and decided to go BACK to the store to inform the manager of how inconsiderate Pinky was. When our friend walked in the second time and passed the counter, Pinky was heard talking to her fellow employees, "Oh, she's going to go complain about me now!" (As a business owner, I know this would NEVER be tolerated in my company. NEVER EVER bully the customer, and NEVER make them feel attacked.) Before our friend could explain to the manager about the altercation, Pinky immediately followed to her defense and interupted their conversation, trying put her 2 cents in. Perhaps she knew she was completely wrong and this was her attempt to save face to her manager? As a business owner, I understand that you never approach a customer in such a rude and negative demeanor first and foremost. And secondly, once the issue is in the managers hands, an employee has no right to interject customer-manager dialogue and make the customer feel attacked. The sad thing is due to Pinky's lack of self control, lack of respect and inability to act professional our friend was not able to have a full respectable customer/manager dialogue without her standing in between, arms crossed. Pinky's body language, the snarl on her face, how quick she was to come up to the customer the SECOND time she came in only trying to talk to the manager was all very uncomfortable and unprofessional. The manager on duty, Daisy, however was very kind and professional and handled the situation she best she could, but sadly that does not reflect on the elderly woman with "strawberry-blonde" hair, behind the front counter. And for that, I am unapologetic to say we will not bring our business or any friend of ours here any more. read more

I have had chicken salad at restaurants and some are better than others. I ordered a chicken salad with greens at this place. I had never been here before. The consistency was like paste and I had bad indigestion all day. I almost swallowed a bone so be aware if you have this tasteless salad. There was a small amount of chicken salad and a plate full of greens and no dressing for the greens. I threw it away in their trash. My grandsons didn't like their burgers. I have never gone anywhere with my grandsons that they didn't eat all of their burgers. The fries weren't good either. I liked the peach snapple. I have relatives in Hunt and we were together a few days ago for New Years, 2022. I will have to try another restaurant in Hunt or near Hunt. If you're not a smoker don't go outside to eat because it's enclosed and the cigarette smoke was very strong. We didn't sit anywhere near the smoker and it was still strong. read more

If you're looking for a meal, keep on driving. Might be more fun for just beers and their packaged snack foods. The atmosphere is neat, I'm sure it's great with live music, but I'm going on the 7th hour of indigestion from the hamburger & tots I had at lunch today, and I'm glad I stopped eating that meal when I did. The counter service team seemed really confused, although pleasant, but the burger meat was a tire tread, and the tots seemed like they were twice fried (to warm them up again). Bleh! as a recient ex employee and somebody that has pride in the food service industry and somebody that has pride as a hunt native I went in there with an open agenda to put my mark on a bit of History to see what I could do I'm an experienced chef of 15 to 20 years I have a culinary degree and I have never seen a kitchen so dirty and disgusting like I have at the hunt store their employees really don't care they're only there to make a paycheck nobody has food handlers certifications and I'm not even sure if they have safe serves they don't rotate their food and they don't even scrub and clean their kitchen I did all I could to get up to the manageable standar but it was hard cuz nobody took ownership or put any type of passion or commitment into cleaning I cleaned black mold out of reach ins where they store their food and they don't move any of their equipment to clean the floors like it's supposed to what they do is they clean their kitchen every 3 months and leave everything underneat h their equipment and in their refrigerators so as a precaution be careful of what you eat there cuz the kitchen lead Frank even served bad pork and was given a hooked up amount just to get rid of it so they won't lose a profit I as a hunt native would think that somebody would have pride in the establishment since it's been there so long but they don't so be careful the main thing they lack is commitment experience and proper training read more

When they are open, this place is flat out awesome. The problem is that you never know when the kitchen will be closed. We drove all the way out there on a recent Thursday evening only to find out they were not open. This was sad because we had previously been there on Thursday Steak Night and had an extraordinary meal. The steaks were seasoned and cooked perfectly. The Hunt Store is an old-timey blast from the past. It's pretty much the only store in Hunt, and serves as both convenience store and watering hole for the locals and the tourists during the summer. Whether you're in need of beer for your next float down the Guadalupe or solid calories to recover from your last float down the Guadalupe, this place has you covered. The Hunt Store also houses the only bank in town, protected old school style behind black iron bars. Walking into the Hunt Store is like walking into a country convenience store, circa 1950. The people are friendly here, so don't worry about being labeled an outsider and given the cold shoulder. I was taking a photo of the BF under the store sign outside to commemorate his first visit, and an old timer in a rusty red pickup truck offered to take a photo of us together without prompting, then chatted us up for a few minutes before rattling his way down the highway. If you're in the area, this place is a must for a pit-stop or three. read more

I've been in Hunt several times to visit friends and family and I've eaten at every place in Hunt and, by far, the worst is The Hunt Store. They are overpriced like you wouldn't believe. My friend and I went there one day and ordered a hamburger with everything on it and fries and the price was almost $10 each! The burgers reminded me of Sonic burgers, nothing special and the amount of fries they give you I could probably count on two hands. However, I made the mistake of making an offhand comment about the price for the amount of food you get and my friend stopped me and told me I could get thrown out for voicing my opinion about the price, no matter how nice I come across. The next time I walked in, I saw the owner yelling at one of the bank employees (as there is a bank inside The Hunt Store as well.) No, I am not impressed with The Hunt Store one little bit, mainly because of the prices and the attitude of the owner. The next time I came up to Hunt, I saw the owner of The Hunt Store standing outside the Rio Rancho Cafe on the other side of the road overseeing the blocking off of an area with very large rocks; an area where the Rio Rancho Cafe's customers have been parking since they are always so busy. I found this very amusing because it was so blatantly an attempt to hinder their business. LOL! Small town politics. Gotta love it! If you are going to Hunt, I would recommend The Rio Rancho Cafe. It's basically a taco stand. You drive up and park. Walk up to the window to order and sit outside to eat. Their food is great!. Good authentic Mexican food; nothing beats that! And the prices are good. Elaine's table I'm also not impressed with. I ordered a high-dollar plate there one time that included some kind of a cheese sauce and it tasted like that canned cheese sauce you see at football game concession stands.
