This establishment has been around for a very long time. A Kerrville resident and friend took us one morning to enjoy breakfast. The pancake was the size of Texas. I do wish they served butter in some other form besides in a little plastic peel off container. I like lots of butter and don't like getting the eye for (20) discarded butter containers. Just a down home ambience and probably have never changed a thing in all the years...Except the butter.

Eggs, bacon, crispy hash browns with biscuits and sausage gravy. Cost: 13.71 plus tip.

Perfect execution of an old school breakfast. It was busy and their waitresses were bustling, but I never felt rushed. I hadn't eaten since lunch the day before, so maybe i went a bit overboard and couldn't finish, but dang, it hit the spot. They don't take credit cards, so bring cash.

    6oz Sirloin, 3 eggs, 2 bacon. Excellent!

Excellent small town America vibe. These are the places that drive the real value of America culture, hard work, and care. Excellent staff and service. True value. Grateful.

Our waiter, Ethan, was friendly and attentive and did a great job. He's the only thing I can say that's good here. We started with the Appetizer Combo, which had fried mushrooms, zucchini, pickles, mozzarella sticks, onion rings and marinara and ranch for dipping. The batter was a nice consistency, but lacked seasoning, so very bland. The dips were good. A couple of us had the small appetite plate, with salad, soup and a half a sandwich. We got tomato basil soup and a BLT and added avocado. The salad and sandwich were good. The soup was so salty I couldn't eat it. One person got the catfish plate with green beans and pasta salad. The green beans were canned and mushy. Those same canned green beans were in the pasta salad. The fish was so salty it was inedible. Just overall not a good experience. The place feels old and dingy. They do have a nice river front location and patio seating.

Anyway, it was a glorious day after 3 days of good soaking rain, which we badly needed in the hill country. The food has always been top notch grade here. The service is very efficient and professional. As for the ambience, the inside is bright and well lighted but to be impressed, you have to go outside. Since it was a glorious day of bright sunshine, coolish temperature and a very friendly breeze blowing, we had a time walking around the area. The surrounding area was lush and very green after the few days of rain! We had a lovely time taking pictures. My brother in law was very surprised about the camel story behind Camp Verde. Camels were used as experimental animals to carry provisions in the 1850's. They were stationed in this area. Unfortunately, the experiment failed because the soldiers hated the camels, who had a reportedly nasty disposition and soldiers ended up with motion sickness because of the animal's unusual walking gait. If you want to visit the area, now is a good time before the summer heat gets here. FYI, if you like Christmas, the gift shop here gets an early start in October! If you like Christmas decorations like my wife, come here and shop. They really fill up the gift shop with goodies!

Weird part was we stood by the "Wait here to be seated sign" while the hostess and waiters passed us by several times and said nothing. Before finally helping us. We had the onion rings and queso for appetizers. Both were good. For the main meals we tried the chicken sandwich, chicken salad sandwich, shrimp and grits, chicken chimichurri and chicken fried steak. All were good except the shrimp and grits. The shrimp were really good, the grits not so much. Weird consistency. Then we tried a few desserts: banana cream pie, bread pudding, raspberry lemon gelato and a vanilla malt. LOVED the bread pudding and gelato. Malt was good. Only thing we wouldn't recommend is the banana cream pie.

He was so friendly and easygoing, but we knew he was putting in work! Tables inside and out and our food still came out quickly, and my water was always full! We started off with the gluten free Hong Kong lettuce wraps, and I almost smacked everyone's hands as they grabbed for another one! The antelope was so tender, not dry, and the sauce wonderfully balanced the side of slaw and savory ground antelope. Delicious! Hubby got the Green Goat Sliders, kiddo got the kid's pulled pork sandwich, and I got the gluten free Crispy Chicken Sammie on a GF bun. Everything was delicious! They undoubtedly know how to cook their meat perfectly! Sliders were very good, and my son devoured that pulled pork sandwich in minutes. The kid's sandwich was the same size as mine! The sliders looked great - just cooked so well, and the chimichurri was delicious (per my husband). While I was given the wrong sandwich, I did not care one single bit! A truly honest mistake, but if I even thought of complaining I'd hope someone would kick me right out, because everything about this meal was great! The right sandwich was so good. I love the slaw and Ruben dressing with the slightly crispy GF fried chicken patty. I like that the fried chicken wasn't heavily breaded - it kept it lighter and just enough of a crisp! I got the Greek salad as my side and WOW. I could eat that salad any day. I don't even like olives, but that salad needed them, and all of it was delicious. I loved the hummus on the bottom which was a great texture and added more substance to the salad. I could eat that salad all day every day. I don't know what feta they used, but it was soft and delightfully salty. So good. I can only imagine how good it is on their Brussel Sprouts which are also gluten free! I did snag one of my kiddo's fries which are also gluten free, and I love it when fries and crispy and brown and not overly seasoned, which these were. Tender inside and crispy outside, nice and browned and almost shoestring. Very, very good! With the great service, the lovely outdoor seating, and such delicious food, I would not hesitate driving back here to come eat again! I only wish the restaurant was a smidge bigger so more people at once could enjoy this fantastic establishment!

I ordered a cup of Lavender Gelato and OMG, it was so fresh, smooth, and delicious . The sweetness was so satisfying, not too sweet and it didn't lack sweetness. I ordered a cheesecake pastry to take back to my hotel room for a snack later on. Service: The people of Kerrville and the Kerr County area have been through a lot over the past year. As survivors, they are resilient and believe in being there for one another. I had a list of questions for the young gentleman who took care of me that day. The questions were regarding the products in the shop, his experience as a Kerr County resident, and what he has witnessed in terms of the before and after the floods. He was very kind, patient, empathetic, and professional yet people friendly. He knew the products very well which is not always the case in various establishments. The way he provided top notch customer made me want to return the next day and I did. I will be back the next time I am in town. Atmosphere: The store was clean, beautifully decorated and quite welcoming. Review I was really looking forward to trying Pookies after…read morehearing so many locals rave about it. I've had pastries in Italy, France, and some of the top bakeries across the U.S., so I was genuinely curious to see if Pookies lived up to the hype. I'll give credit where it's due: the location is beautiful, the decor is impressive, and the staff were absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, the food and pricing left me very disappointed. I paid nearly $10 for a "premium" ham and cheese croissant that appeared to have been reheated, and I honestly couldn't tell how fresh it was. Unfortunately, it tasted more like a basic cheese-and-meat hot dog than a premium croissant. At that price, I expected significantly better quality ingredients and execution. For me, $5 would have felt reasonable, and perhaps $6 for supporting a local business. Nearly $10 for what I received was simply not worth it. For comparison, I've had excellent, fresh-baked goods at 365 Bakery in Ingram at much more reasonable prices. I recently paid around $10 for a jalapeño cheese loaf that was large enough to feed six people. I'm glad I finally gave Pookies a try, and I'm especially glad I can say that the staff and atmosphere were excellent. Unfortunately, based on the food quality and pricing, I won't be returning. I also found the owner's response disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns about value, it came across as dismissive. That response reinforced my feeling that the business is comfortable with its pricing, even when customers feel the quality doesn't justify it. Everyone has different tastes and expectations, but for me, Pookies simply wasn't worth the price.
