Awww. Hard pass on the grits. Unless it's Texas style to serve it lumpy and cold. Butter helped. Butter in little pulltop plastic containers...real pats of butter sends a message of freshness. But those crispy hash browns....that perfect crepe-like omelette...worth five stars... Service. Stellar!!! My rockstar waitress was friendly, welcoming and efficient. This establishment has been around for a very long time. A Kerrville resident and friend took us one morning to enjoy breakfast. The pancake was the size of Texas. I do wish they served butter in some other form besides in a little plastic peel off container. I like lots of butter and don't like getting the eye for (20) discarded butter containers. I had an omelette, it was super good but SUPER small and didn't come with cheese? So I asked for some and they literally gave me the tiniest to go container of cheese and it wasn't even full. The amount would have MAYBE covered the palm of my hand. Also got hash browns. Like they were just sprinkled on there, it's hard to explain, like the thinnest layer you can think Of. Literally enough to cover the area of that side of the plate, and could see the plate between ever "Shred" of potato. Wonderful hot chocolate tho but they were VERY STINGY with their ingredients & portions. The food was PERFECT! Special order omelet and crispy hashbrowns and special order breakfast taco, prepared exactly as requested, with real homemade biscuits that melted in our mouths. I was recently in Kerrville and stopped in the Historic Hill Country Cafe for breakfast. I didn't realize that was the original location for HEB. The wait staff was funny and cute. So all in all the staff was great till it came time to pay. Unaware too me they do take credit cards only debit in the $10 increments. If you are like me and only have a credit card not a debit you probably don't know your PIN number. This makes it very hard to pay. While trying to pay I felt like they were impatient and a little rude. I think it's 2020 and time to get with the times as a credit card machine would not eat into anything if the raised their price's slightly. This is our go to place for a great home cooked breakfast. We have been coming here at least twice a week since moving to Kerrville eight years ago. From our first visit the Hill Country felt like home. The food always comes out fresh and hot as ordered. Our coffee/drinks are constantly being refilled. You couldn't ask for nicer, sweeter, more competent wait staff (thanks Sadie & Keri!). Also the owners, Cindy & Mike, really care about the cafe and their customers. We love the old time diner/cafe feel, as there's so much history to this building. I don't know how anyone could give this place a bad review. Where else can you have a great meal, be called by name and treated like family? If you don't try the Hill Country Cafe you'll miss out on a great experience. read more

Food was mediocre at best. I had a ham omelette with grits. The grits were crusty and dry. My omelette was just an egg folded over a lot of ham pieces. The staff was not wearing masks and I saw no extra sanitization going on. They need to follow Covid recommendations. I do not recommend this place. read more

I Brought my husband for the weekend and was looking forward to taking him here, then I saw the 'sign.' The note seemed good and friendly, Up until the remark about China. Who even thinks like that in 2021 much less write it. I was shocked. What an uncalled for remark. The owner should be ashamed of himself and this place shut down. If we don't want to wear a mask that's fine, that's each of our choices, but what the heck does China have to do with me not wearing a mask in Kerrville, Texas? Nothing. What an uncalled for comment. This place was awful. We went in wearing masks and we were welcomed in with very dirty looks. Even the kitchen staff came up front to look at us. When we sat down one of the wait staff made a snide remark about our masks before getting up to get us water. Upon sitting down and getting our water the waitress came up to ask if we were ready to order. We were not yet and that really seemed to anger her. Then when we were ready to order she yelled at someone at our table because she wasn't ordering in the order she wanted us to. We were not brought out the correct siwith our meals and the food was just subpar. As we got up to leave with our masks on we all could hear our waitress make one final remark about it before we walked out of the door. If you are trying to be Covid conscious or really just want a good dining experience i would recommend ANYWHERE ELSE. Felt like I was in Mayberry. Wait staff is a good example of southern California sun babies that were put out to pasture. The music was from a jam box with aluminum foil on the antenna. So much for the decor in a quaint town know for music festivals. Now the food is a different story. The onion rings were in house cut battered then cooked. They were thick cut with a great batter. I got a chicken fried steak sandwich. They used a mundane cube steak but battered here before frying. Seemed to be the same batter as the onion rings. So I was happy - fried perfectly not so dry I chucked. The bun was grill toasted perfectly crispy. One of coworkers got a tuna salad sandwich. She was impressed minimal mayo and fillers. All in all interesting place won't come back but glad I did it once (gee like so many things in my life!) read more
