Hunter's House did an amazing job! The hamburgers and cheeseburgers were cooked perfectly and full of flavor, and the fries were a great side to complete the meal. Everything was fresh and satisfying. They currently have a small seating area available to dine in while they operate out of a temporary setup, with their permanent building scheduled to open in April. Even in the temporary space, the experience was excellent. The young lady who took our order was incredibly kind and welcoming, which really stood out. Great food, friendly service, and definitely worth stopping by--I'm looking forward to visiting again once the full location opens. read more

I had the recommendation to grab a bite here when I was in town from a few people, and to stop by Greene's by some others. Hunter House was the better of the two for me on this day. The buildings that house both Hunter house, and Greene's almost look identical, as do the small counters, griddles up front. My husband & I have frequented Woodward for years & we occasionally stop in Hunter House to grab some food. We were at home & decided to drive down for some burgers. They are in the process of opening their new location, so the inside is not open yet. There's a heated white tent out front where they take your order & then someone brings your food into the tent once it's ready. They do have 2 pretty big picnic style tables in there as well. We had our 5.5 month old with us, so we decided to stay in the tent & eat. My husband ordered their double cheeseburger with no onions & a vanilla shake, I ordered the Robcat Burger & then we both got an order of Mals Pals. The food came out pretty quickly & was good. I only gave 4 stars because I do feel like the burgers are priced a little higher than they should be when compared to places like Teleway which is basically the same food but cheaper. Overall, Hunter House is always a solid choice when cruising Woodward! read more

Quaint parking lot, all white building, and billowing smoke mixed with that unmistakable aroma of burgers on the grill. The inside looks almost unchanged from the '50s with the stainless steel lunch counter-tops, spinning stools, and open concept so you could see the magic happen. The staff had great comradery and chatter behind the counter making it a jovial and lively feel. Meanwhile, a constant stream of patrons, young and old, came by both the walk-up to-go window and dine-in options to feast. The burgers themselves: Excellent. Great cheese melt. The buns are not too cakey and absorb the grease without becoming the central part of the eating. And the burger was steeped in the grease of the hundred or so patties that came before it- all of this culminating in a scrumptious and pleasant experience. read more

I just left Better Burgers down the street from here. I got One hamburger there and it was $5! Just a simple slider. So I came down the street to the previous occupants of that place and ordered 2 more burgers because I was still hungry! The burgers at Hunter House are $2.80 each. I just ate them and they are just as good as Better Burgers and I didn't get ripped off. I hope this new Hunter House location thrives and Better Burgers lowers their prices or goes away. Never been to Hunter House before but wanted to try it and the St Brown meal. Take out only at the new location. I heard they're doing construction and plan to open in the spring. 4/18/26: picked up 2 burgers and a fry on way home. Fries were not salted, totally bland. Burgers meat patty was more than white castle meat, but not flavor enhanced, which I prefer. Bun size was no larger that White Castle. The burger was not flavor enhanced, and so It did not meet my satisfaction. I won't be back! read more

Hunter House moved into the KFC location half-mile down the road and their tasty burgers just dropped from a 5-star to 1-star. DISAPPOINTING. Burgers are not wrapped individudally, they're place in a styrofoam box along with fries that were not for the same person. Came home and had to separate the items and kids didn't eat their cuz the items they orded were mixed with their sibling's choices. I used to walk into Hunter House and feel the spirit of burger greatness wash over me--grease in the air, onions sizzling, the kind of ambiance that whispered, "Your cardiologist will judge you, but it's worth it." I was in Birmingham for work and was asking around for a quick and delicious lunch. A FedEx employee overheard me and immediately said "hunter house". The sheer level of confidence gave me no choice. I got two smash burgers with bacon, some fries, and a coke... the staff was amazing, the food was good, and the price was even better - $11!!! Might be one of the best burgers in the world. Classic old school flavor, toppings are always perfect. My favorite is a double cheeseburger with jalapeños. The chili cheese fries and shakes are killer too. It's hard not to come back to this place every week. Don't be put off by the long wait times. Patience is a virtue for a reason and these burgers are well worth the wait. I would highly recommend getting three sliders and fries. More than enough food and just enough to stop you from going back for seconds. This place is seriously good! If you don't like this place you should probably start looking inward. I grew up with Hunter House and coming back after many years away, it was exactly as I had left it. This is one of those places where you get what you order and it's just good - no frills. Two smash burger sliders and a side of fries are my go to. I love the shoestring fries - they were cooked to perfection - just slightly crispy on the edges. Inside is very crowded and it felt a little chaotic. It's far too cold to sit inside and the door slams itself shut SO LOUDLY any time anyone comes in or out that you can't have a conversation with anyone sitting next to you. That being said, I wish there was more outdoor seating. read more

Let me start by saying, I approach this review with a great deal of shame. Despite having grown up 4 miles south of Hunter House and having attended high school a couple miles away, today was my first trip to hunter house.....I just turned 48. I have been seriously sleeping on HH. Let me explain why. When I first learned about HH in the 1990's it was (disgustingly inaccurately) described as a place similar to White Castle. Since I find White Castle inedible, I immediately dismissed HH as a place I wanted to try. Thank goodness for Andy Issac on Twitter. I noticed a few of his tweets that included pictures and thought to myself, those burgers look nothing like White Castle! Today I finally was able to try them for myself. The place was amazing. First I love the vibe of the place. Lunch counters are some of my favorites and this is a good one. The burgers were beautiful...a nice crispy smashed burger with delicious crispy onions throughout. The sides were fantastic as well. Can't want to go back for more. read more

There is no way you can be in the area and not stop in for a burger. The parking lot is small and one direction so make it count when you park. No steps to enter and it's seat yourself. Got a double cheeseburger. It was cheap, and patties were truly small. So small and thin, you could barely see them in the photo I posted. Maybe that's the goal. But they weren't incredibly tasty or juicy either. Service was incredibly slow - 10 + minutes for a very average burger. Peppers added were way too spicy I had to take them out. (+jalapeño) Omg Michigan!?! 10/10 bites tasty deliciousness the grilled onion the pickles. There are seasonings available I sat at the counter (salt pepper & a Cajun? Was waiting for the wife to get a procedure done so I went exploring the hood and see this place saying servicing since 1952 so I had to try it if they been going strong that long!! It's definitely a play off white castles but they are smashed burgers instead of patties . Same concept with pickles and grilled onions. They are also sliders as well. We got the double cheeseburgers and also the fizzy fries It came with bacon, ranch, cheese on them . I have to say pretty good they didn't chince on the items. We also got a vanilla malt to wash it all down. I like the way it looked inside old school diner vibes. They even served the burgers on a real plate. Little pricey but again I guess it's the experience to try something new when you don't live in the area . But they were busy !!
