Today, my family and I celebrated my birthday at this restaurant. When I was choosing a place, I knew right away that I wanted to celebrate my special day here. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. First, I'd like to mention the interior. The high sculpted walnut ceiling is both inviting and impressive. As soon as you enter the main hall, you immediately feel that you've stepped into a classic upscale restaurant. The menu isn't extensive, but it offers enough variety to find something to your liking. Every dish we ordered was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. We had: grilled Spanish octopus, tuna tartare, two servings of roasted Atlantic halibut, duck à l'orange, ricotta cheesecake, mango crème caramel, pistachio parfait, and cappuccino. I also had an espresso martini, which was excellent. The service was top-notch--professional, attentive, and very friendly. Located in a busy cross section of East Norwich, the Hunter Restaurant is surrounded by several other popular dining establishments. The venue boasts both outdoor patio seating and an elegant, upscale indoor dining room, providing a versatile atmosphere for diners. The bar area is thoughtfully designed with a modern flair, adding to the restaurant's contemporary ambiance. Our introduction to Hunter Restaurant was the courtesy of a gift card from a family member; otherwise, I am not sure I would have thought of dining here on my own. Upon arrival, we were seated in a comfortable booth tucked away in the far back of the dining room, facing the entire space. We were told this was the "best seat in the house," and it certainly provided a cozy yet commanding view of the restaurant. Our server and assistant greeted us promptly and attentively. We started with some complimentary bread, green olives, and bruschetta, delightful beginning. From what I read beforehand, Hunter Restaurant is an innovative bistro offering a blend of classic French and Spanish Mediterranean fare, with vegetarian options available to suit diverse preferences. For appetizers, we chose a pizza topped with tomatoes on a very flat bread, and tender artichokes--both dishes were excellent. For our main courses, I enjoyed the chicken parmigiana, which was pounded to perfection, and my companion had the halibut. Both entrees were outstanding, flavorful, well-prepared, and plentiful. In summary, this is a restaurant I will return to, primarily because of their delicious and generously portioned food, coupled with the exceptional service. I've dined here twice in two years; once with a party of twelve and most recently as one of five. In my more recent visit, as in the first, I found the atmosphere comfortable in the modernist sense, the food well prepared but not extraordinary, and the service competent but not cordial. When considered together, my sense is that the restaurant is a bit too cold (cosmopolitan?) for my taste, and the food, while good, is not special enough to mute my unease. read more

We decided to go here for my husband's birthday. We had an early reservation so we walked in 30 mins after it opened. We started off the the octopus and the Tuna Tartar. The octopus was okay definitely had better the tuna was good tho. I decided to go for the pasta and my husband had the halibut. For a expensive restaurant the food was nothing great tbh. I was expecting it to be lot more exclusive. The environment in the restaurant was so somber. Our server didn't even smile, barely checked on his and was on his phone often. Went in for Sunday lunch and all I can say was that I was happily impressed. The service was spot on. Tuna tartar was perfectly citrusy. Paella was as if made in Valencia. The minute you walk in you are met with Outstanding Decor and amazing aroma. Shrimp Cocktail was large shrimp and the cocktail sauce was made to perfection with the right amount of Horseradish which tasted homemade. The Chicory Salad was so flavorful with light dressing. Loved it! The seafood salad was delicious. The Halibut was done so well with julienne vegetables. Yum! My Husband had the chicken parmigiana which not only looked amazing he said it tasted amazing. Several members of my dining group have enjoyed Hunter so I felt it was time for me to go. A sucker for a prix fixe menu, I decided to make a reservation for an early Sunday dinner where they feature three courses for a very reasonable price. (Follow my foodie adventures on Instagram, The Dining Deal Foodie). Hunter is located conveniently in its own spot on Oyster Bay Road, just north of Northern Boulevard. They have their own parking lot, while still having space for outdoor dining. We ate indoors and were a comfortable table of 6 in an otherwise undercrowded dining room. Our server came over immediately with water and complimentary bread, olives, and fresh jamon from Spain (WOW!). We were given both the prix fixe menu and their regular dinner menu. I had my eye on a particular salad and was underwhelmed with the entrée choices on the prix fixe, so I decided to order off-menu for the evening. Our server recited the specials for us and I opted for one of the fresh fish specials--striped sea bass with chick peas, chorizo (I think!), bok choy, and a delicate broth. THE GROWS: I cannot think of one. Seriously. THE GLOWS: Chef Hunter came out to greet our table and wished us an enjoyable meal shortly after we were seated. I wish he had stopped by AFTER we ate because he deserved to hear how thrilled all six of us were with his food and presentation. The kale salad was so much more than that: green apple, quinoa, sunflower seeds, and a delectable scallion vinaigrette. The complimentary jamon and olives prompted me to order a glass of wine, because who eats that without wine? The atmosphere is upscale yet the staff are relatable and accommodating. For dessert I ordered their pistachio parfait: their ice cream is made on-site and it was obvious how fresh and exacting this recipe was. I ate the whole thing and even scraped the bottom of the dish, wishing there was just a little bit more. Hunter is a venue that is now in my rotation of restaurants. I read about Hunter restaurant in Gold Coast magazine and decided to go there for my wife's birthday. The decor and food were very good as described in the magazine, but the noise level was HORRIBLE. We could hear a roar as we walked into the dining room, and could not hear the hostess as she inquired about our reservation.The waiter could not hear us as we ordered . As the restaurant filled up the noise level got worse so we could not hear each other. We could not wait to finish our dinner so we could leave the restaurant. I will not go back there and will not recommend it to our friends. read more

It's a highly-elevated dining experience of eclectic and varied options prepared with an achieved level of superiority. The restaurant is the highest caliber fare in a stylish but comfortable setting with extraordinary hospitality service. Accessible from locally in Long Island and worth the trip from NYC and anywhere in the tri-state region. 5/5 in each and every category. Arriving with family, the Hunter experience starts at entry with true, Gatsby-like class, without the wasteful decadence. An atmosphere established by an elegant decor and lighting featuring lightly stained wood, with hints at European legendary influences suggesting, without copying, the Venetian flair of contemporary, positively Americanized Cipriani. It's first evident at the long wavy bar of an exotic onyx. Perfectly roomy with space for diners and drinkers. The back wall of the bar is adorned with a large commissioned abstracted cityscape painting that sets a tone of complex (not to be confused with complicated) style. That theme follows throughout the experience. Entering the dining area transports to a time in mid-century when the decor suited the mood and functionally established a theme. Soaring ceilings appointed with a sweeping, architecturally artsy, wood lattice, reminiscent of Italian hotel lobbies when dandies and their gals sat for long hours enjoying the avant- garde. Calatrava would be jealous. Lanterns hang above, like lighted sailboats bobbing on the water on a calm, starry night. This restaurant is obviously very, very special. And, the menu does equal justice to the design. Comfortably seated in a corner booth, smiling, cordially professional servers bring out drinks and recommend truly special add-ons, supplementing the menu. Marinated olives and fresh bread crisped in the oven wait on the table. Appetizers arrive: A light, vegetable/lentil broth riddled with onion and carrot; Chicken meatballs of silkily seasoned protein in a light marinara over creamy polenta; Fresh, spicy clams in a delicious, soupy broth screaming for a spoon. The advance line-up elevates anticipation beyond palatal expectations. The special of the day - Swordfish. Perfect grill on a precisely cut steak. Light hints of seasoning with herbs, lemon, capers and a whisper of butter. The fish is treated respectfully, like a lauded and honored guest. Plated with aesthetic simplicity, the adjectives of approval fly. The Swordfish is bold in its veiled simplicity, arrogant in its excellent superiority. Searching memory, it rises to the best piece of fish I've ever had. Ever. A small tasting platter of house-made merguez lamb sausage is set down. It is seasoned as precisely as it was made. My taste buds sing in appreciation. If the swordfish was superior, the tasty bites of the sausage are bumptious - questioning whether I'm sufficiently sophisticated to sample their delectable, scrumptious distinction. The combinations of Mediterranean, French and Italian seasoning and techniques combine like old friends without conflict, the sum far exceeds the parts. It almost feels like pushing limits to share desserts. Chef Hunter personally brings out his evening excursion of playful checkerboard cookies. He is humble - the cookies are not. Crunchy, hints of gooey, chocolatey goodness; the cookies winningly challenge my vocabulary. Hunter's talents coax the best from simplicity, which paradoxes the behind-the-scenes complicated efforts. Chef Hunter plainly works hard to make it appear easy to be exceptional. A basket of warm, bite-sized chocolate chip madeleines arrive. Airy and sweet without crashing too hard on the tongue. I hover defensively. Share? NEVER! Too good, far too good. A Pistachio parfait arrives. Spoons duel for the texturally ideal pistachio ice cream with the right nutty crunch, chewy caramels, etc. An exceptional meal from start to end. Chef Hunter's hand is directly involved in every preparation, adept at everything: cooking, baking, breaking down proteins, sauces, plating, pairing. His politely friendly servers are proud of every dish they set. Hunter fabulously ascertains that every mouthful is visually excellent, flavorful and toothsome. Temptations exceed promising accolades. There is a reason the restaurant is eponymously named. Anything cutesy would distract. The restaurant is Chef Hunter's dedicated focus. "Hunter" may become a universal descriptive, like, "that restaurant is so Hunter;" or, "wow, your new exotic car is so Hunter." I'm late to the party. The word is long out. It's always a treat to come to Hunter Restaurant. The entire staff is always so attentive and friendly. The menu has changed which was exciting and we tried a few new things and specials. For appetizers we had the tuna tartare and the clams casino. The clams were so delicious we ordered a second order for the table with our entrees. My sister ordered the Strip Streak MR and it was perfectly cooked. My husband ordered the coq au vin special and absolutely loved it. I ordered the halibut over julienne vegetables. My dish was perfectly cooked. The vegetables were julienned but still had a bite to them, the fish was light, delicate and the beurre Blanc sauce was so delicious, I'm still dreaming about it. This restaurant is classy and trendy. It has a beautiful vibe. We had reservations on a Friday at 7 and it was pretty busy. They brought warm bread with oil & olives to the table. So good. We started with appetizers- I had the French onion soup- it was very good. I ordered the branzino as my entree- it was the best I've ever had, so fresh, you can taste the flavor and seasoning- it melted in my mouth. I also tried the halibut which was delicious. We ordered coffee to finish and skipped dessert, but they sent over complimentary dessert for the table. The Crème Caramel was to die for. Not something I would have ordered, but a must try! The cheesecake wasn't my favorite, but I appreciate it nonetheless. The service was great, even though it was busy. The prices are reasonable for the quality & portion size. Plenty of parking in the lot. They have a beautiful outdoor section they open in the summer, with string lights & it looks romantic. I plan to come back for sure. You don't want to miss this place. 10 reasons to NEVER go to Hunters Restaurant. OMG - never again - Avoid..! 1st - the restaurant's only dining room is so loud that no one can hear each other at table. 2nd - Service is Awful - for real, no joke! We had a @7.30pm table for 4 people. Water girl gave us bread, saying waiter is coming. Waited 15 min to order drinks & 15 min drinks to arrive 3rd - Requested waiter service 3xs to take food order. 4th - Waiter rushed us fast to take food order and never offered to tell us about any dinner specials. 5th - Then waiter left, not to been seen for 1+ hours. 6th - Now @9.35pm, still no dinner for table. 7th - Now @ 9.36pm, Manager says again, just 5 minutes for food, he said that 10xs. 8th - @9.40pm - we get up to leave and get pizza next order @ Gino's pizza. 9th - @ 9.41pm - manager runs to table saying don't leave, your food is coming out in 5 minutes. 10th - We all laughed and said, this place is off the list..!! Had dinner there for the first time, for a special occasion. Location is great, easy to get to. Ambiance is high-end yet comfortable. Plenty of spacing between tables, comfortable chairs, clean, temperature was perfect. Acoustics were great, easy to converse with tablemates. Service - friendly, efficient, professional, engaging. Even though it was our first time, our waiter made us feel valued and important. Nice bread basket and nice ham to kick things off. Nice drink list and a small but nicely put together wine list. Ordered a glass of Rioja and our waiter brought 2 bottles over to the table (and 2 glasses) to let me taste and see what I preferred. Very nice touch. Food, great. Salad appetizers were very nice size and delicious - the Caesar and the Gem were both great. Spicy clams, excellent, soaked up the broth with the bread. Main course, wonderful - duck, and cod. Both cooked perfectly and very flavorful. Sides of spinach and french fries. BIG dish of fries along with ketchup and mayo for dipping, a highlight. Somehow we did a dessert too, ice cream, and ricotta cheese cake. That concluded a great experienced. Well-paced, not rushed, friendly, comfortable. It's pricey but it's worth it. Our server Franscico gave us the best service we could dream of. He was very professional and attentive. Our courses were perfectly timed out. I was very impressed that all food was hot, not room temperature but Hot! The tuna tartare (I didn't even know that I liked tartare) was one of my favorites along with the beet salad. I'm also not a fan of octopus but this grilled octopus was out of this world... so tender!! Francisco was nice enough to hold the door for us on the way out. HIGHLY RECOMMENED 4.5 STARS What is "Hunter" aside from a long forgotten detective show featuring a long forgotten baller? Hunter Restaurant is the newest addition to the list of Long Island's best bistros, propelled there by excellent attentive service and a creative menu which really shines. I attended a group dinner there with six others on Friday, December 11th. The restaurant is located just north of the intersection of 25-A and 106. Parking is ample at the sides and behind the restaurant. The outdoor dining felt perceptively safe (and cozy), with appropriately spaced tables, proper ventilation and heating more than sufficient to keep you warm. The indoor dining area and the bar were attractively decorated. The restaurant seated our group promptly as my fellow diners arrived. Our server, Lisa, was a joy. She was polite, helpful and attentive. She smoothed over an issue with my food with grace and without drama. Onto the food, after my Ketel Martini arrived, I and two others shared the best damn Caesar Salad ever. It was perfectly topped with large White Anchovies. The Romaine was very fresh and crispy. The dressing was delicious. Order this salad!!! I and another diner ordered the Duck L'Orange. I specified that the Duck should be prepared as the chef likes it (presumably medium rare). I was crestfallen as two Duck dishes arrived, one perfect and one overcooked. Of course, my fellow diner got the perfect one. Doing what I dread, I rejected the dish. Lisa understood and conveyed the chef's apology (not necessary but very appreciated). I received a perfectly cooked and delicious Duck 10-15 minutes later. Order that too!!! Desserts here are outstanding. I went with plain Vanilla & Chocolate Gelato. My companions loved the Chocolate Cake, Apple Tart & Flan. Other recommended dishes were the Linguine with Beet Greens, the Burger, Bouillabaisse, Kale Salad, Carrot Ginger Soup and Tomato Fennel Soup. The same thing happened to a friend of mine who went a different time, waited an hour and complained and then was asked to leave if they didn't want to wait. My in laws recommended me this restaurant as we didn't want to drive to Manhattan for our anniversary. I was disappointed to a waiter who didn't even try to apologize or do something after I ate half of salad and found hair in the plate and point to him. He just put plate away. Was here on last Christmas Eve with my family. While they had been here several times prior, this would be my first, and so I did not know what to expect. First of all I'd like to note that the interior aesthetic is absolutely lovely. Modern and comfortable, with interior arches reminiscent of a music hall. For dinner I ordered the butternut squash ravioli for my appetizer, and swordfish for the main course. Unfortunately while the quality of the filling and overall presentation were of good quality, the raviolis themselves were a tad too firm to be wholely enjoyable. The swordfish was prepared excellently, with a texture that reminded me of butter. Overall an absolutely pleasant experience. My husband and I have been coming here since they opened. Food and service always excellent. My husband would get the paella every week( take out) fish was always fresh and delicious. Last night we went to take out to find menu has drastically changed. We got lamb chops , Duck, and Dover sole. No more paella or shrimp cocktail on the menu. Lamb had no taste,duck was just ok, but the dover sole for$75 was it edible, rubber. They must have new cook or new owners. I'm done with this place . Very disappointing. I've been to this amazing restaurant twice already and I have to say... they don't disappoint. In a sea full of mediocre meals, Hunter brings an elevated food experience to Long Island... and we are here for it! From the exceptional decor to the friendly staff, you'll feel welcomed in to the restaurant which gives a very cocoon like feeling upon entering. Super cool. Super trendy design. I ordered two of the specials off their menu yesterday. The foie gras (it was impeccable) and the King salmon with a spaghetti squash cake and Buerre Blanc. Impeccably cooked. The salmon had a delicious crunchy sear on it, while nestled in wilted greens and a creamy sea of buerre blanc. And then... oh dessert. The Mango Creme Caramel is must. The lightly burnt sugar on the mango cream is exceptional and the flavors compliment each other so well. Over all this place is a gem and we look forward to going back soon! read more
