Hospital care is average... depends on what you are there to achieve and who is involved. My complaint is about the administration-- particularly when it comes to any kind of difficulty getting a claim paid and dealing with insurance. They billed us for authorized services that should have been billed to the insurance company. I had to spend HOURS on the phone to track down the fact that despite the fact that the services were pre-authorized, they were NEVER BILLED to the insurance company. Lazy administration didn't bother to track down their own error and threatened us for MONTHS with collection. Horrible. Don't get sick, because the process of paying for being sick will kill you. read more

I have been to HMC many times over the years for my parents and a few times for myself. We are long time residents of Hunterdon County. I have always found everyone courteous, attentive & respectful. The only time we had severe delays was during Covid. My elderly dad had to go in for a fever with kidney stones & there were very strict rules in place - understandably so. I have been very happy with the care the 3 of us have received in the ER & in the hospital at HMC. read more

The nurse I dealt with was rude and disrespectful. My doctor was late for our appointment and the nurse came out to do my vitals 9 minutes after my appointment time. I said I had been early and needed to be at work right after my appointment and why did she not take care of this earlier. I was first appointment of the day for this doctor. she treated me as a child and would not do her job until, as she said, she had her say. she did not apolo for being late and she belittled me. This is a updated review. I really wish Hunterdon medical center was a good hospital, but it is not. My wife had stage 4 tonsil cancer 12 years ago, which HMC diagnosed as stage 2. The treatment plan the doctors came up with was to give her chemo, radiation and the oncologists even called her dentist, without our knowledge, and told him to remove all her teeth prior to treatment. HMC had little to no experience with tonsil cancer, but they were willing to treat her. Even the ENT doctor, who is associated with HMC, that looked at her tonsil decided it should be remove immediately, which they did. After surgery, he said it was "abnormal." Thankfully for us we decide to have her treated at U of Penn Cancer Center, which correctly diagnosed it as stage 4, treat her with radiation and chemo and she has been cancer free for 12 years! And, still has her teeth. To say HMC care was reckless is an understatement. They had no business even considering treating her! Even the ENT doctor got a scolding for the doctors at Penn for taking the tonsil out, thereby making it more difficult to diagnose. It's not an overstatement to say my wife would Not be here had she been treated at HMC. Good healthcare providers need to know their limits and recommend other facilities that can properly treat patients. HMC doesn't do that and seems to be driven by $$$$. read more

I can confidently say you are better off risking your life taking a longer ambulance ride to Morristown/St Barnabas than coming here. I can confidently say this hospital does NOT care about their patients and simply views them as numbers/possible profit. Time and time again any time family members visit this place, there is some sort of adverse event that puts their lives in jeopardy. Patients presents in the ER with abdominal pain? Bring them in and give them a bed, but get them out as fast as possible so we can get the next person in to make some $$$. No imaging done. Guess what? That pain was from a ruptured appendix that they were SENT HOME WITH. Patient comes in threatening self harm? Eh, give them a script of Ativan so they can get hooked on benzos. It is absolutely APPALLING how this hospital conducts itself. And that is coming from a medical professional whom has seen the best and the worst within different medical facilities. You'd truly be better off going to the worst citymd compared to this place. On top of the blatant disregard for adequate patient care that has repeatedly been shown here, they quite literally conduct themselves in a criminal manner regarding billing. I'm very disappointed with the services given to my grandfather. Facility lacked communication and attendance to their patients needs. His sacral wound had worsened d/t no follow through with his weight shifting regimen and no air mattress provided. Medication was administered with another patients name on the label. Medication was left on tray table with no nurse present, out of his reach. He had increased confusion with no order for labs or urinalysis to r/o potential cause, until asked for. Quality of the system has declined dramatically recently. My wife and I have been going to Hunterdon Healthcare and their affiliated doctors for over 40 years. For most of that time the doctors and hospital were top notch. As the doctors retired or moved to other health systems, the quality of care has dropped dramatically. My wife and kids have all transferred to doctors at St. Lukes and I recently elected to have surgery at RWJ Barnabas. The latest issue with this organization was with their Occupational Health Services that refused to approve my son's employment physical despite his Doctor signing off on it. read more

I'm so surprised reading negative reviews about this place. I've been here many times, having three kids here, and having to stop at the ER on multiple occasions for various reasons. The staff has always been absolutely phenomenal. The physicians are top notch. I have never had a negative experience. To me, it is clear that the organization and people care about the patients and care about what they do. I unfortunately was at the ER last night with my four year-old daughter, who had a dog bite, and I had the most positive experience I've ever had in any healthcare situation. There is not one doctor to oversee your well being but a multitude of them who do not communicate between themselves. This is a slightly underrated hospital I think they do a great job, the check in process is a bit slow. When you are in need of some sort of medical attention quickly there's no time for pens papers and stuff like that. Depending on what it is but I came in with chest pain and they asked me start filling out stuff or else they couldn't check me in. That's BS that can be done during. I could not make any sense out of my mother's health crisis. I never figured a sinister element in it. I never imagined a hospital would withhold lifesaving treatment. I thought having an elderly woman with the symtom of delirium in restraints for a week was bad. Well my mother's nightmare had just begun. Her first admittance she was in great physical condition and when they discharged her with np diagnosis she could no longer walk on her own. She had extreme fatigue and muscle weakness. I don't know if it had anything to do with the severe infection that was festering inside her. It was so severe one of her kidneys was nonfunctional and had attached itself to other organs and body parts. Odd that she was never treated for sepsis in any of her readmittings. She was elderly, had a fever, delirium and later that day a uti and she was discharged. She was admitted a few days later with a high white palate count and diacharge a few days later. I live out of state and I was going crazy telling my sister that that it is an emergency situation. It is just so unbelievable. They knew about her severe infection and thought it too costly to treat her. I have no clue if it was disclosed to my family. They were too busy keeping everyone in the dark about my mom's delirium. It became severe cognitive impairment because the hospital still didn't want to treat her. I think they were surprised that she was still alive each time she was admitted. Months went by and she was finally diagnosed with a severe infection and had to have one kidney removed. To remove the infectioni is still an emergency. It took 2 weeks to start draining the kidney and 4 weeks to actually drain it. I am still researching that one. . It seems like they still were on their cost mission. I am looking forward to finding out everyone involved in my mother's health crisis. I have been trying to make sense of it for a year and a half. My mom trusted her doctors and family and they ended being her worst enemy. She thinks her family are heroes because she doesn't remember any of it and they are not going to tell her. They started her nitemare with a lie and they will end it with a lie. My family and hospital better hope my mother stays healthy. I am extremely anxious to meet the one who thought they were God and could choose my mother's fate. She fooled you! It's called the Cognitive Reserve Network. Once I reported a nurse who said she was pulling three shifts and admitted thanking god for coke or she wouldn't have been able to I reported that and nothing was done. If you want to die be lied to, treated poorly, or watch someone you love die who was never in the hospital. Take them here. This was a great hospital about 14 years ago until all the good doctors left as they were being told if they didn't take the COVID-19 vaccine to lie and say it was for religious reasons, and they refused to lie. They either all started quitting or were being put up against a wall demanding that Hunterdon Medical Center allow them to buy their practices when the doctors all said no this hospital went above and beyond trying to ruin their amazing new practices, sending letters to all patients for hundreds of different doctors stating they didn't take any privet or government insurances anymore. I was even shown a letter of threats to all my doctors, and they all left. The hospital is now understaffed and is a nightmare. If you are put in the hospital, it's heartbreaking hearing patients crying for help while nurses do nothing but talk, play on their phones, laughing with the doctors as if it was a nightclub and they do nothing. It is a living hell each time I have to go there, and right now, I have for the last two months, but I do not trust any of the nurses and new doctors there either or the stuck-up ones who believe they are better than anyone. This hospital is now owned by a corporation that knows nothing about medicine, bedside manners, care, or compassion! I have had many experiences at HMC, and I have always been pleased with the outcome. The hospital staff is so good. From ER visits, to childbirth, to my hip replacement, my car there has been top notch. My hip replacement went perfectly, from start to finish. Not one complication, five years along now. The hospital started out a small country facility, and has grown into a complex facility with extensive services and facilities. My Norge has a hip surgery in a "top" NYC hospital, and my experiences at HMC was so much better! read more

Went to the ER today with my daughter who was having an allergic reaction. It was early and not busy so we got in quick. When she was seen we had to push to have her actually looked at. No blood work no tests no nothing. Left with no answers and can't go to another doctor because insurance will not pay for a second visit same day for same problem. Hunterdon MC has gone down the tubes over the past few years with no sign of coming back. It used to be the place to go, NO MORE. BE CAREFUL!! We hope no one else gets dismissed like we did. We did see the message left here by the healthcare department for another individual and I left a message. We shall see if we continue to get Blown off. Hard sell on unnecessary equipment delivered by a rude doctor with no bedside manner at all. If you can' manage it try to get to Morristown instead. I am reviewing the home care division of Hunterdon Medical Center. It is my opinion that before you let any of the nursing staff or aides into your home , that you put everything a parent owns into a irrevocable trust . I allege , while 95% of the staff were excellent, 2 were not. Instead of investigating what the staff and former staff were doing, the admins chose to discredit me. Thankfully my friend was able to get to a real rehab which saved his legs. I should report the healthcare agency to the nursing board. Again this is my opinion. Instead of advocating for the patient, they chose to protect bad current and former employees. Having staff ask for high value items on patient's death bed was unconscionable and unethical . This is my opinion, your experience may be different than mine. 95% of the staff were ethical 5% I should have reported to the nursing board. read more

I'm getting PTSD from reading these reviews. I no longer live in the area, but when I did my daughter became seriously ill with an intestinal blockage. She survived, but if I had to do it over I would've taken her right to Morristown memorial or Princeton. Terrible experience. She was 14, and put on the pediatrics unit with nurses who seemed really unable to care for a kid recovering from major abdominal surgery. It was just a protracted nightmare- I know she's still dealing with the aftermath years later. These folks were beyond incompetent. It was a very disturbing experience for our family. I'm at the medical center doing my second tour on the L&D ward in as many years. Some changes really need to be made - as it's evident they are cutting corners at the detriment of patient satisfaction. For one, the rooming in policy is absolute garbage. I've currently been up for almost 24 hours straight. I EBF my first two children, one of which was born at a different hospital with a real nursery and had ZERO ISSUES. this policy is dangerous and scary. Over tired mom is more likely to fall asleep holding baby and have issues healing and recovering properly. The fact that they use styrofoam cups and don't have pitchers for water would be bad enough - until we realized that they were a miniature size. The nurses don't swaddle baby properly and they don't provide sleep sacks - so over tired mom is once again tasked with dealing with a baby all night with excess fabric in its face. They also lack basic cable channels such as Fox and ABC and skimp on all the supplies. Updates to come. read more

I was butchered at this hospital. Avoid OBGYN at all costs. Pre-birth the OBGYN doctors threatened to force a cesarean because I gained 10lbs in my last trimester. They ignored my hypothyroidism to fixate on this. I heard this complaint from 2 other moms in the area. I put together a birth plan which we went back and forth on for weeks, then ultimately they never followed a single agreement from the plan. My favorite was letting a hostile family member specifically excluded from my hospital room waltz right into the room. If that wasn't bad enough, I went in for a routine check in a few days after my due date and they manipulated my husband into induction. I said "no", they pulled my husband out of the room then he came back in tears after the staff told him horror stories that I would die and our baby would die if they didn't induce me. Induction was horrible, the nurse was rude and rough. Just rammed her hand into me, it was incredibly painful. They kept pushing me back and forth, ultimately leading to the umbilical cord getting wrapped around the baby's neck. Then they DID force me to have a cesarean. It gets better! Anesthesiologist was too concerned about asking one of the nurses out on a date to care what he was doing. I was in tears and terrified and he just went right on pitching an unwelcome date on a nurse. The anesthesiologist ultimately botched my epidural. The OBGYN BEGAN CUTTING INTO MY ABDOMEN WITHOUT ANESTHESIA. I spent about 5 minutes arguing with him that I felt the knife cutting into me while he adamantly told me I was just feeling "pressure". It was like that scene in House of the Dragon. When I started shaking and was about to faint they finally believed me and the anesthesiologist panicked and then overdosed me, resulting in me projectile vomiting all over the room. When finally my child was born - they violated my birth plan again and refused to let me hold her - my husband had to argue with them and brought our baby over to me so I could at least lay my hand on her head. They then whisked me away to a recovery room. Then came rude and rough nurse again who shook me awake a few hours later and started lecturing me that I had to feed my baby. I was still recovering from anesthesia and no one stuck around to help me with getting the baby to latch the first time. I was so out of it from the double shot of anesthesia that she did not latch correctly, ultimately leading to a painful bout of mastitis that ultimately lead to a Candida rash on my baby. When I showed up for a lactation consultancy, the nurse declared "If this were the 1400s, I'd have to go outside and declare you the village wet nurse!" Ha ha ha, you know what was like the 1400s? The hospital ultimately marked my epidural for a cesarean as "elective" - even though they botched it and cut into me raw. Because apparently at this hospital if you are a woman, you don't need anesthesia for major surgery. It was awful, traumatic, degrading and unnecessarily dangerous. I believe to this day that they force women to cesarean for the additional fees - I believe they are on NJ states watchlist for that. read more

This hospital only cares about making money. They do not give the proper care, the paramedics that work at this facility do not care about patience care and in my experience have actively ignored patient complaints and, in the state of New Jersey has caused multiple malpractice suits. The paramedics that provide improper care according to the NJ State are still actively employed at this facility despite multiple allegations of improper care and currently undergoing investigations of malpractice. Even without taking into consideration the amount of people that are not properly treated due to this in the emergency room, this is not the only place you will feel discriminated against. While I was in active labor with my child at 18 I was told by a nurse I could not have an epidural because I was "too young and needed to experience child birth, according to my nurse and it was my fault I was In that situation despite knowing why I was in that situations. This nurse not only ignored my typed out and printed birth plan but actively forced me to do things while I was in labor that I was not comfortable with and told her I was not comfortable with. Becuase of the experience I had with Hunterdon Health I no longer feel safe or comfortable giving birth in a hospital becuase of the trauma I had to endure while I was there. The only way I would every recommend Hunterdon is if your life is in immediate danger and the only possibility you had was the closest hospital, otherwise avoid this place at all costs, it is not worth your life. read more

Negative stars are more appropriate! It's a wonder she is still alive. My sister has been in and out of this hospital with stage 4 cancer for months and the nurses & caregivers (in general) DO NOT CARE and outright lie about the care they are giving her. She came in with kidney stents & tubes, which nurses KNOW NEED TO BE FLUSHED TWICE DAILY, they did not do it, they did not ask the doctors to request it to be done and did not ask my sister's spouse to ask the doctor for an "order" to do it - for DAYS and DAYS. When asked if they flushed the tubes, they stated that they couldn't without an "order" - BUT MADE NO EFFORTS TO REQUEST IT. This is standard care for these stents that could again cause ecoli infections that can kill my sister in her state. They did not provide any materials to replace, flush or change her bandages, nor did they do it for DAYS. When they finally tried to change the bandage, THE NURSE tore one of the stitches holding the tube for one of the stents and said that my sister did it when she tried to scratch her back. My sister, at the time was barely coherent, certainly unable to reach her hand behind her back, could barely roll from her back to her side, has bedsores to prove it, and absolutely could not tear the stitch. She had 2 different "healthcare facility infections" that almost killed her. They took x-rays for pneumonia and biopsies and never communicating that they were doing this or reporting the results to either the patient, but more importantly to her spouse (her advocate). They have been asked numerous times to communicate with her spouse and the nurses know that my sister is not coherent enough to make sound decisions. One of the previous times that she was in here, they were going to discharge her without her having been on her feet AT ALL FOR 2+ WEEKS and a Nurse Trainee said that this was done all the time. She was in no shape to go home, not even being able to stand, let alone walk to the bathroom. The Nurses/Doctors etc. had no intensions of making sure PT/OT would come to the house to help. She weighs 80 pounds, is in isolation because she is so immunosuppressed from the 20+ years of chemo treatments, they took out her IV and were supposed to put in a pic line and do a transfusion yesterday - it is now 24 hours later and they have not done either and want to discharge her tomorrow, knowing her hemoglobin is dangerously low and she again has been in bed for over a week without walking. What is wrong with this hospital. No common sense. She needs to eat to build up strength, but they are not doing anything to make sure she is getting a meal for each mealtime, there is no positive care. It has been one fumble after another, after another and then infections from being in the hospital, etc. We can't be there 24/7 and they won't allow that anyway, but they are not doing the bare minimum to keep my sister alive. I think she is still alive out of sheer spite. God help us, God help anyone who has to come here as a patient. read more

One employee was trying to transfer to a different area of the hospital as a unit clerk, she went on the interview - was told that they'd let her know their final decision. Well, it's been several months. Nothing. How is it that a person with over five years of experience as a unit clerk can't even transfer out of their current department? A good friend of mine from college applied for two positions ~ one being a transporter and the other one for a patient care assistant. He met the requirements for both positions. Currently enrolled in Raritan Valley, as a nursing major. He has yet to receive a call back, it's been over two months. He recently called Human Resources to find out the status of his application ~ and the response was that it's still active within the system. He was told that it comes down to timing (...whatever that means). Two good candidates, two sub par experiences with the institution. Am guessing that Human Resources must play favorites ~ because how else can one explain why two perfectly good candidates got the brush off? Hunterdon medical center claims to be an equal opportunity employer. If they are so equal opportunity, why are they passing over good candidates (to include their own current employees)? As for me, I too was once a Hunterdon employee....but seeing all the changes through the years has become quite depressing. Management has their favorites, whether HR chooses to admit it or not. First Lets start with ER, they don't listen and medically cleared my family member, drugged them and then talked them into signing them selves into 2 Central. Truthfully they even made it sound good to me. But when you get there it is nothing like it was explained. They do not have any writen info on there rules, regulations or what to expect for the family. Some of the staff were wonderful, but unfortunately most should not have the job they have, I wouldn't trust them to run a dog kennel, let alone people in crisis. There is even a cleaning lady that is just mean to the patients. They really did nothing to help that a trip to your own doctor couldn't of done . In June 2021, I went to the Hunterdon Medical Center emergency room and after 7 hours I was diagnosed with cellulitis. I was told I would be admitted but there were no beds available at the time and would need to wait for one to open. I waited several hours and was put in a room at 3 am. I asked the my roommate how long the bed was open and he said he got into his room at 6 pm and it was empty then. Of course, the hospital excuse is going to be a nurse shortage for the wait to get me into a room. There was not a Covid overload condition at this time, as I was concerned about that and was told there were very few patients with Covid in the hospital at this time. It was quite a while before a nurse came into my room and told me, as usual, they were short staffed of nurses. From my bed, I had a perfect view of the nurses station and they didn't appear busy to me, as they were sitting and standing around, talking and chuckling. I was assigned a hospital doctor, although I was a bit dismayed that I wasn't told who he or she was. My prescription meds were not given to me. I gave a list of meds at least 4 or 5 times to various hospital staff that I take daily. I understand the need for redundancy so that a mistake isn't made, but at this point I was greatly past due for my meds. I have kidney disease and high blood pressure, so it's important I take these in a timely manner. The doctor came in to see me about 9 am and said I would get an antibiotic infusion once daily for 7-10 days without consulting with me. It didn't seem logical to me to stay in the hospital for this, as this could be done as an outpatient. My wife called ID Care in Hillsborough to see if treatment could be done on an outpatient patient basis and she was assured it could be. As a matter of fact, the infusion nurse said there was a possibility I could be given a one dose long-acting infusion. When I conveyed to the hospital that I was leaving, in a calm and rational manner, for outpatient care, they argued with me and wouldn't agree to release me. ID Care of Hillsborough assured my wife and I that I was within my rights to have my medical care wherever I wanted it to be administered and that Hunterdon Medical Center couldn't insist I stay there. Again, I expressed my desire to Hunterdon Hospital to leave for outpatient care and they wouldn't let my wife up to my room with my clothes. My wife got the hospital Patient Advocate involved for help, although the Patient Advocate works for the hospital and really didn't advocate for me / my release. She was more of a mediator between me and the nursing staff / doctor. I told them I was going to leave in my hospital gown and my wife would film it so as to cause embarrassment to them. They then agreed to release me after I signed an apparent release form. I left and saw a doctor at ID Care that same afternoon, where I got the one infusion that cured my cellulitis, with no need for additional infusions. I truly believe the hospital wanted to keep me there not for my best interest, but to make money on a 7-10 day stay. I'm a 70 year old, highly educated male who through the years has had a positive experience with various hospitals and physicians. I know some doctors and nurses on a personal level and know they are highly dedicated and work hard in the vast majority of cases. Please know this review specifically regards Hunterdon Medical Center and I would not recommend this hospital to anyone. I'm happy to say to reiterate all worked out fine for me. I waited to write this review to ensure everything was okay with the cellulitis and that the one infusion worked, saving me a lengthy stay in the hospital that Hunterdon Hospital insisted I needed. read more

I only moved here a few months ago, and had to go to the ER because I fell and sprained my ankle pretty badly. Normally I wouldn't have gone, but I heard a few cracks, and my foot swelled up instantly so I thought I should go check it out. First off, the ER receptionist, was a doll. So nice, and talkative and really made you feel like you mattered. The nurses were very nice also. They made sure that I knew exactly how to use my crutches and didn't leave until I was comfortable with them. Then they wheeled me out and made really nice conversation, and it really helped ease the pain. I don't think I've ever had nurses that attentive before. The doctor. eh. Of course all he did was walk in and say "well, it's not broken" and basically walked out. Could have been better, but I didn't go to medical school. Very nasty patient accounts department. Although there are one or two women there who are a little bit on the kind side. The receptionist is nasty. I got a phone call because of a mistake, and she told me I had to come in. Mind you, I had no idea where I was going and stated that. And all she had to say to me was "well you've been to the ER so you OBVIOUSLY know where the hospital it" well duh, of course I do, I just don't know where pt accounts is! Maybe I'm just being picky, but I shouldn't be made to feel like an idiot. read more

By far the worst hospital in most of the country. I have been to the ER twice in which there were 1/2 people in the waiting room and I waited over 2 HOURS in which I left. Nurses walk around gossiping and eating food like they are in absolutely no hurry. DO NOT GET IMAGING AT ANY OF THE OFFICES OWNED BY THE HOSPITAL!! For example, I got an ultrasound at the OBGYN and the doctor charged me, but also the hospital because they hospital "owns" the doctors office so technically I "used" a facility.
